Pundit says Dennis would be good at Leeds

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Daniel Pinder, who is editor-in-chief at Get German Football News, has claimed that Emmanuel Dennis would offer a different way to attack if Leeds United signed the striker.

Dennis had previously been linked with a move to Leeds when he was at Club Brugge but since his loan move to FC Koln in January, the striker has played 10 games scoring just one goal in the DFB Pokal.

Leeds have relied on Patrick Bamford this season for goals and thankfully for Marcelo Bielsa, the striker has not missed a game this season through injury or suspension and his 14 goals have helped the Lilywhites to a solid debut Premier League campaign.

Speaking on what Dennis would bring to Leeds that Bamford doesn’t do and how he would fit into a Bielsa side, Pinder exclusively told FFC:

“He definitely offers something different to Bamford as he plays on the shoulder of defenders, and if the defence is playing a high line then he’ll happily make runs in behind them.

“Bielsa likes his strikers to press from the front and Dennis does this well and he’s shown some good finishes during his time with Club Brugge, so I think Leeds could be a decent fit for him.”

Bielsa has established a front three of Bamford, Raphinha and Jack Harrison at Leeds this season, a trio set to play Premier League football again next term.

It appears unlikely that FC Koln will make the 23-year old’s loan deal a permanent one considering he is yet to get off the mark in the Bundesliga.

Double century for Sinclair in first league outing

New Zealand Test batsman Mathew Sinclair marked his entrance into the Yorkshire league at the weekend when scoring a double century for his Cleethorpes club

Lynn McConnell07-May-2001New Zealand Test batsman Mathew Sinclair marked his entrance into the Yorkshire league at the weekend when scoring a double century for his Cleethorpes club.Sinclair was 200 not out when his side had first use of the wicket against Sheffield United at the Bawtry Road wicket.Cleethorpes were 304/3 at the end of the innings and Sinclair became one of only four players in the league’s history to have made a double century. He was 31 runs short of the all-time league record set by Sheffield United’s Shaun Beck two years ago in a 60-over game.Sheffield had no answer to the batting onslaught which was aided by Mike Smith’s 41 and James Stevenson’s 46.Then in the field, the teenage left-arm spinner Nick White reduced Sheffield to 70/8 before a lower order rally saw the side through to 145.White took 5-21.The side was set to play another game today, on a Bank Holiday in England, while it faces Shefffield Collegiate next Saturday. It is a great start for the lowly-ranked Cleethorpes club which is looking to make a significant run at the league title this summer.

Liverpool fans fume over Bamford links

A number of Liverpool fans have been left unhappy after the Reds were linked with a summer move for Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford.

The outgoing Premier League champions have suffered a frustrating season in front of goal, with wasteful finishing costing them in a number of matches. The likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have been particularly guilty in that respect, although the former did score in Saturday’s 2-0 win at home to Southampton.

It seems likely that Jurgen Klopp will delve into the transfer market this summer in order to find another attacking player to boost his options in the final third.

According to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein, Liverpool are admirers of Bamford, suggesting that a potential summer transfer bid could be on the cards. The 27-year-old has shone for Leeds this season, scoring 15 goals in the Premier League and pushing to feature for England at Euro 2020.

Liverpool fans unhappy with Bamford rumour

Despite this, many Liverpool fans don’t want to see Bamford in a Reds shirt next season, claiming that he isn’t good enough.

Some feel that the rumour is a substantial disimprovement from the likes of Kylian Mbappe, while the Leeds striker had previously struggled at Premier League level prior to this season. One Kopite took aim at owners FSG, who are already in the doghouse following the European Super League fiasco.

Sir Paul Condon, the Head of ICC’s Anti Corruption Unit, expressed his gratitude to the PCB upon assisting him in carrying out his duties. Speaking at a press conference at a local hotel, Sir Paul said, “I am delighted by the support rendered by the PCB Chairman and every other concerned person with regard to my working”. He had separately met the PCB Chairman, Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum of the Lahore High Court and others.Sir Paul’s speech while lacking in substance was profuse in furthering what he has already laid down in his report and recommendations issued last Wednesday. He vowed to reduce the bane of match fixing by the 2003 World Cup, saying, “I cannot guarantee to completely eliminate corruption from the great game of cricket, I can, however, assure that it would be reduced to a minimum by the next World Cup”.After giving details of the personnel attached to the ACU, including three former investigators from British police, a security manager and a computer expert, Sir Paul, a former police commissioner himself, went on to reveal that he had at first refused to take up this particular job. However, he only accepted the task after seeking a number of assurances from the ICC.These assurances include the sincerity and earnestness of the cricket world in rooting out corruption, independence in carrying out his duties, and provision of the above-mentioned full-time colleagues.Refraining from divulging the names of individual cricketers involved in corruption, as it could be detrimental to the legal aspects of the process, Sir Paul claimed, “sadly, there still are a number of players whose involvement in shady activities can’t be denied and we are sincerely hoping to cleanse the game of such names”.Calling the players marring the reputation of cricket by their dishonest activities as cowards, Sir Paul Condon discussed in depth, the different ways and means through which a match could be fixed, ranging from the toss to underperformance in batting, bowling and fielding. Other means include corrupting groundsmen, umpires and others.Discussing the role of Cricket Boards, Sir Paul lauded their collective efforts against corruption and went on say, “the Qayyum Report in Pakistan and King Commission’s Report in South Africa are some of the efforts by individual Boards, which has also helped me a great deal in my investigations”.Stressing that the ICC is to discuss his recommendations in its June meeting, Sir Paul stated that his report was just a preliminary step and that, “apart from interviewing various individuals, his Unit has to visit India to look into alleged links between match fixing and organized crime”.He also showed intentions of investigating the allegations by Chris Lewis, a former England pacer, against a number of players. The investigation of match fixing relating to the ICC Trophy held in Dacca in 1998 is also on the cards. He declined to comment on investigations on specific players, matches or series because he felt that his inquiries may be compromised. In the end, Sir Paul Condon commended the efforts of journalists around the world, who through their investigative reporting set the course for further probing of the matter.Identifying the personnel indulging in match fixing as greedy and opportunistic, he also praised all those cricketers who had opposed all temptations to indulge in corrupt practices. He stated he would like to come back to Pakistan again and praised the cooperation and support he received on this first visit.

Surrey bowlers put Somerset in trouble

If the first two days at The Oval belonged to batsmen, the third was distinctly in favour of bowlers with 15 wickets going down, the last eight of which were Somerset’s who finished the day with an overall lead of 164 and two wickets standing

Andy Jalil08-Jun-2001If the first two days at The Oval belonged to batsmen, the third was distinctly in favour of bowlers with 15 wickets going down, the last eight of which were Somerset’s who finished the day with an overall lead of 164 and two wickets standing. In the final session, which saw four Somerset wickets fall, there was some resistence from Ian Blackwell who stayed for an hour and a half to make 30 and from Robert Turner who took up 76 minutes for 22.Mark Lathwell was the first to go after tea on 111, managing only 13 after his 99 in the first innings. Following that Somerset lost the sixth and seventh wickets on 156 and 159. Shortly before stumps, which were drawn on 190 for eight, Richard Johnson unleashed two sixes and a four in one over from Salisbury who finished with four for 72, his best figures this season.Somerset in their second innings, which began after lunch, lost early wickets, the first on 27 and the second on 45. It was a similar start to their first innings when they were 46 for two. They then lost the third on 58 when Peter Bowler, who batted so well in the previous innings for 73, was caught behind for ten.A recovery seemed on the way, as it was in the first innings when the fourth wicket had put on 140, but this time, on reaching 100, in the last over before tea, Michael Burns’ 86-ball innings of 42 came to an end with Salisbury trapping him leg before wicket. He had struck seven boundaries during his hour and a half at the crease.Earlier this morning, Somerset bowlers did a splendid job after their wayward performance on the second day, to bring about an extraordinary collapse in which the home side lost seven for 38 to be dismissed for 403 in the first innings, shortly before lunch.Surrey had begun well with Mark Ramprakash and Adam Hollioake adding 43 in 41 minutes with Hollioake scoring 29 of those runs with some hard hitting. He lifted Keith Dutch for six over long-on in the tenth over of the morning to bring up the 350 and three overs later he took a boundary off left-arm spinner Blackwell at mid-off and sent the next ball for a straight six. That took his score to 47 but a run later with the total on 365, Steffan Jones was brought on and he trapped the Surrey captain lbw with his second ball. That dismissal sparked a Surrey collapse. With Gary Butcher caught behind for eight off Dutch and four runs later Ramprakash’s five-hour stay ending on 143, Surrey were 386 for six.Ramprakash had added 27, from 57 balls, to his 116 overnight when Jones bowled him. Wickets fell quickly, the seventh on 388 and the next two fell to Johnson, both lbw off successive balls, on 399. Dutch then wrapped up the innings, finishing with four for 96.

Predicted Manchester City XI vs Brighton

Manchester City take on Brighton in the Premier League on Tuesday evening, with Pep Guardiola’s side looking to continue their impressive run of results away from the Etihad Stadium with a victory against Graham Potter’s side.

A much-changed Citizens side edged a 4-3 thriller against Newcastle United last time out after a superb hat-trick from Ferran Torres clinched their 12th successive away league win, and it seems likely that Guardiola will rotate his side once again against the Seagulls.

Potter’s side are now safe from relegation and can play without pressure against the Citizens, and they will likely continue with the playing style which has earned the former Swansea boss many plaudits this season, not least from his direct opponent tonight.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects Guardiola to line his side up on Tuesday night, with nine changes to the team which started against Newcastle…

Despite Scott Carson’s penalty save and general all-round performance at St James’ Park, Guardiola has already confirmed that Ederson will return in goal for City’s final two Premier League fixtures.

There are three changes in defence as Joao Cancelo, Nathan Ake and Eric Garcia make way for a more defensively secure backline, with Oleksandr Zinchenko, Ruben Dias and John Stones coming in, whilst Kyle Walker keeps his place on the right.

Fernandinho rotates with Rodri in defensive midfield to partner Ilkay Gundogan, with Kevin De Bruyne returning from injury to start in attacking midfield.

It’s all change in attack, as Phil Foden replaces the “world-class” Raheem Sterling on the left wing after another poor performance from the 26-year-old against Newcastle, whilst Riyad Mahrez replaces Torres on the right despite his superb display last time out.

Finally, Liam Delap could be handed his first Premier League start up front, replacing the goal-shy Gabriel Jesus.

In other news… one Manchester City star has made a big declaration about his future at the club.

Wasim Akram to play in Gough's benefit match

Zero chance of Grealish joining Tottenham

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that he cannot imagine Jack Grealish leaving his old side for Tottenham.

The north London club could lose their star man Harry Kane in the summer and may need to undergo a rebuild.

Tottenham are known admirers of Grealish, having a bid of £25m turned down for the player a few years ago, and will have the funds to make another move for him, along with a striker, if they can get the £150m+ they are said to want for Kane.

Hendrie, however, believes the above is a non-starter given the current state Spurs are in.

Asked whether a Kane-less Tottenham reigniting their interest in Grealish as part of a rebuild could be a possibility, the ex-Villa player said to TT:

“If Kane left, why would he even contemplate going to a football club that’s selling their big players? Really and truly, you may as well stay where you are. I just think it’d be a no-brainer just to stay at the football club that he’s at.

“You’re taking big players out of the equation and possibly losing even more big players at your football club because you’re losing your prized asset, so definitely not for me.”

With Manchester City currently in the frame to sign Grealish when the transfer window opens, ultimately, it does look like Tottenham have missed their chance to bring the attacking midfielder to north London.

Powell and Thomas lead Glamorgan to another win

Glamorgan recorded the second win of their pre-season tour to Cape Town, beating a Western Province Academy XI by four wickets in a 50 overs contestat Uitsig yesterday

Andrew Hignell09-Apr-2002Glamorgan recorded the second win of their pre-season tour to Cape Town, beating a Western Province Academy XI by four wickets in a 50 overs contestat Uitsig yesterday. The Welsh side were indebted to Mike Powell and Darren Thomas who shared a blistering partnership of 172 runs in a mere 19 overs, and all after Glamorgan, who had rested Steve James and David Hemp, had slumped to 67-6 chasing 237 to beat the Academy side that contained some of the leading young players in the Cape. Both Thomas and Powell hit rapid half-centuries, with Powell reaching 50 off 48balls, whilst Thomas smashed 50 from just 34 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 6 fours. Thomas finished unbeaten on 73, with Powell 86* as the county reached their target with 12.5 overs to spare.Earlier in the day, Robert Croft had been the pick of the Glamorgan bowling, taking 2-21 from his 10 overs. Darren Thomas, Dean Cosker and Adrian Dale all chipped in with two wickets apiece, as the Academy were restricted to 236-9.

Southampton linked with Andrew Gravillon

Southampton have been linked with a move for Inter defender Andreaw Gravillon ahead of the summer transfer window and the Frenchman could be the man to solve a key issue in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s defence next season.

According to French news outlet Foot Mercato, Southampton, Leicester City and Crystal Palace are all keen on the 23-year-old after his impressive performances on loan at FC Lorient this season.

Gravillon was a mainstay in Christophe Pélissier’s side for the second half of the season as they narrowly avoided relegation to Ligue 2, with the youngster making 26 appearances in the French top-flight, contributing two goals and two assists, which helped him average a solid 6.66 rating from WhoScored.

It certainly seems likely that the defender will depart Inter permanently this summer after spending the last few seasons out on loan, as he said recently:

“Once the season is over, we will see with my agents whether we should stay in Lorient, return to Inter, go elsewhere.”

Considering the French defender is yet to make a first-team appearance at Inter, and the Italian side are reportedly desperate to raise funds this summer, it seems extremely likely that Gravillon will depart, and Southampton could be the team to take advantage.

Only West Brom conceded more goals than Southampton in the top-flight this summer, so it seems clear that Hasenhuttl must focus on adding defensive reinforcements to his side ahead of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

The right-back position was a bit of a disaster for the Saints at times last season. They looked particularly vulnerable in that area when Kyle Walker-Peters was sidelined through injury, with the likes of Jan Bednarek, James Ward-Prowse and Moussa Djenepo all featuring at right-back due to a lack of depth at that position.

Back up right-back Yan Valery was loaned out to Birmingham City in January and his lack of appearances in the Championship does little to suggest that he will return and re-establish himself as part of Hasenhuttl’s squad ahead of next season.

Therefore, the signing of Gravillon could be perfect for the Austrian, as he has featured as both a centre-back and a right-back in his career, so could fill in for Walker-Peters should the former Spurs man miss any games next season.

The Frenchman’s £4.5m value also fits in with Southampton’s transfer model of targeting players under £10m this summer, so this seems like a very logical deal for the Saints to complete if they want to improve on their defence ahead of next season.

And, in other news… Semmens should overrule crazy Hasenhuttl decision and swoop for £8.1m-rated beast
