Hardly his fault: Liverpool fans defend Virgil van Dijk after Serge Gnabry’s goal

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have jumped onto Twitter to defend Virgil van Dijk, after the defender came under fire for his involvement in Germany’s second goal on Sunday evening.

Holland found themselves 2-0 down to the Germans after first-half goals from Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry, but it was the latter whose strike had rival fans on Twitter blaming Van Dijk for not doing enough in preventing it.

Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

The former Arsenal winger cut inside from the left flank, one-on-one with the Liverpool centre-back, before dropping his shoulder and firing the ball into the top right corner.

Given his practically imperious form over the last year, it was strange to see an attacker get the better of the former Celtic man – the fact it wasn’t a direct error just goes to show the high standards set by Van Dijk.

Naturally, the Liverpool fans on Twitter leapt to their record signing’s defence following the incident against Joachim Low’s side…

Liverpool Injury News: Joe Gomez nearing return to action

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Joe Gomez will return to full training after the international break in what is a huge boost for the club.

What’s the latest?

The Liverpool Echo quotes Klopp as saying:

“We all expect him to be back after the international break – in full training, and then we will see how long it takes.”

Gomez has been on the sidelines since fracturing his leg in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Burnley at the start of December.

It had initially been feared that the England international could miss the remainder of the campaign, but Klopp has revealed that the defender will be back on the training field at the end of this month.

The 21-year-old had been very impressive for the Reds in the first half of the campaign, making 18 appearances in all competitions.

Virgil van Dijk has certainly stepped forward in Gomez’s absence, but Klopp will be relishing the chance to put his two best centre-backs on the field at the same time once again.

What’s next?

Liverpool’s next match is at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on March 31, but Gomez could easily miss that.

At this time, it is difficult to ascertain when Gomez will return as a lot depends on his rehab over the next couple of weeks, but he will certainly want to challenge for his previous first-team position.

Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

But throw in the fact he’s still an incredibly young player, and that Liverpool are now approaching the most intense period of the season where every game is essentially a must-win (or at the very least must-not-lose), it wouldn’t be surprising for Klopp to err on the side of caution.

Aged 21, Gomez has a long career ahead of him. Nonetheless, just having the England international back in training will be a boost to the whole squad – for starters, it will keep Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren on their toes.

Leeds fans react as BBC Radio Leeds sign new two-year deal to cover club

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United confirmed via their official Twitter account on Tuesday that BBC Radio Leeds had signed a new two-year deal to cover the club, and Whites fans were quick to respond to the post and rejoice.

The duo of Adam Pope and former player Noel Whelan have become popular through their mainstream coverage of the Yorkshire outfit in recent years, and the pair will now get to continue doing it for at least another 24 months until the end of the 2020/2021 season.

They may well be providing their commentary in the Premier League next term should Marcelo Bielsa’s men secure promotion from the Championship in the remaining eight matches or via the play-offs, which would obviously be a huge boost for all parties involved.

One Leeds supporter went as far as saying the announcement was “like a new signing”, while many reacted by saying “get in” – the famous phrase and reaction Whelan has become known for when on the microphone.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

West Brom: It’s becoming increasingly obvious as to why Darren Moore was sacked

The first loss since Darren Moore’s sacking almost came close to haunt West Bromwich Albion on Friday night. However, Jimmy Shan’s tactical astuteness allowed the Baggies to wether the storm, as he successfully changed their style and overwhelmed Birmingham City in a thriller.

Indeed, no one would doubt that the Baggies have been playing with fire for a few weeks and were finally made to pay for their defensive shakiness. Obviously, even the excellent Sam Johnstone couldn’t save them this time, as Shan learned a valuable lesson on having to improve his side’s set-piece defending.

That being said, they never gave up hope even after going down twice.

Dwight Gayle soared in a new (it should never have needed to be a new one) role centrally, where he works the best. He ran Birmingham’s defence to the ground, being supplemented well by the composed Jay Rodriguez and his side’s in-form midfielders. Despite having to overwhelm the ultra-defensive Blues, they found spaces with some impressive attacking moves.

The fighting spirit showcased in the end was something which Darren Moore just couldn’t conjure up. While his sacking last month may well have been a relative mystery, things are looking a lot clearer.

Right now, it’s evident that the players love working under Shan. He allowed them to play freely even under pressure, resulting in some superbly worked goals and a comeback win which consolidates the fact they’re once again on the rise.

While the heat will rise in the coming weeks, Friday night showed a new side of West Brom. No longer are they the side to bow down and accept defeat, they finally have an in-game manager. A resurgent unit who play their heart on their sleeves, the Baggies are now unflinching under pressure and are intent on riding their wave of momentum all the way towards winning the play-offs.

The Verdict: Should Arsenal sign Ryan Fraser this summer?

[ad_pod ]

Rumours linking Ryan Fraser with a summer switch to Arsenal have intensified in recent days after the Scottish winger refused to quash speculation while speaking to the media.

According to a recent report from Sky Sports, Fraser feels flattered by reports linking him with a move to north London.

“They are a huge club, a massive club. When you see your name thrown around you always think to yourself that you are a Bournemouth player and you try to do well.

“I’m not going to lie, you do feel good, especially when it’s a massive club.”

These quotes emerged after a report from The Times revealed that the Gunners are tracking the Bournemouth ace after being impressed by the extent of his impact in the Premier League this season.

With these reports in mind, Football FanCast writers have been debating whether Arsenal should make a summer bid for one of Bournemouth’s most outstanding players this summer, and it’s fair to say the topic has divided opinion…

James Beavis

“No they shouldn’t. Yes, the Scotland international has had a brilliant season for Bournemouth, but he is more of a West Ham-type signing than an Arsenal one. The Gunners need better if they want to prove to their fans that they are serious about making huge progress both in the Premier League and the Champions League next season and beyond. One or two marquee signings are needed in wide areas, and Unai Emery must go back to the drawing board to find a suitable winger.”

Billy Myers

“Arsenal should definitely bring Ryan Fraser to the Emirates this summer. The Scottish international has enjoyed an excellent season for Bournemouth so far, scoring six goals and recording 10 assists, and at just 25 years of age, he still has a vast ceiling for improvement. Additionally, the diminutive Cherries man will have just a year remaining on his contract in the summer, which means that the Gunners could potentially get him on the cheap – this particular fact should entice Emery to do a deal.”

Ben Goodwin

“It depends on the price and how they plan to use him. Fraser has been sensational for the Cherries this season, but there’s no telling how he’d fare under the pressure that inevitably comes with signing for a top six side. I also just do not think he is the top class calibre wide man they are looking for, so if he is signed it should be as a squad player, not a Ramsey or Sanchez replacement.”

Harry Sherlock

“Yes. Fraser is a player with a high ceiling who is having an excellent season and he’d improve Arsenal. Alex Iwobi lacks the genuine pace needed to be a real threat on the left wing and Fraser has it in spades. The Scot is unlikely to cost too much and can potentially take his game to the next level at the Emirates. Do it.”

Is age starting to tell on timeless Manchester City maestro David Silva?

[ad_pod ]

It would take a very brave person to write off David Silva so consistently sublime has the Spanish midfielder been since his arrival to our shores in 2010. Such is the notable descent in his performances in recent months, however, that slowly nerves are being plucked up and we’re now beginning to hear the highly unusual sound of criticism being aimed in the direction of a player nicknamed ‘Merlin’ for his magical qualities.

What jolts most of all is where much of this disparagement comes from: a Manchester City fan-base who idolises and cherishes their favourite son in equal measure. For close to nine years now the slightly built schemer, who boasts 127 assists during his time in Manchester, has conjured up an astonishingly high standard of creative football at the Etihad and elsewhere and this has won him plaudits far and wide across the game.

His peerless puppeteering has been unparalleled with a masterful appreciation of space and a supernatural capacity for knowing when to release the ball, and to whom, and at what weight. There was once mischievous a rumour going around that Silva misplaced a ball. Nobody believed it.

By playing such an integral part in three Premier League titles, and having done so with balletic panache, it cannot and should not be underestimated how beloved Silva is by the blue half of Manchester. Yet with heavy reluctance still the criticism has come; or more accurately a concern that the passing of time is finally starting to fade the player’s powers and influence on games.

Last Tuesday evening at Tottenham’s magnificent new stadium a great deal of responsibility was placed on their veteran star to connect a team set-up to largely contain with the forward forays of Aguero and Sterling. Not for the first time this season, however, the 33-year-old failed in this task and by doing so it left Aguero isolated and equally as anonymous.

Anonymity is one thing though, what really startles is the increasing habit of a player who for so long appeared to swish around in velvet slippers now passing with leaden feet. Away to Watford in December – in an otherwise immaculate display it must be said – Silva horribly misjudged a pass sending it to touch. It drew an audible gasp of shock from the away end. Now, witnessing such sights only prompts a grumble of annoyance so regular are they becoming.

Though his stats still bear up to previous campaigns – 9 goals and 12 assists this term should eventually surpass his overall contribution to last season – it should be acknowledged that most of his good work occurred prior to Christmas and with a dip in form now prolonged questions are being asked as to why this is.

Is age now impacting on a body that has put itself through over 28,000 hours of competitive football in England? Are the psychological effects of last year – when Silva continued to play through personal turmoil – finally taking their toll? Is rest the answer?

Sadly there is scant opportunity for the latter as the games now come thick and fast, each one crucial and must-win. As City embark on a potentially momentous month ahead, can they afford to keep relying on arguably their greatest ever player?

Liverpool: Lloyd Kelly could be the answer to fullback cover this summer

Liverpool are a club that are in need of depth over the summer, and especially in the fullback areas.

With Nathaniel Clyne out on-loan and Alberto Moreno seemingly banished from the first-team, the Reds only have two fully fit natural fullbacks in the side in the form of Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, and this lack of depth is something that Jurgen Klopp will be addressing in the summer.

One name to crop up recently is Bristol City defender Lloyd Kelly, who according to Football Insider has caught the eye of Liverpool scouts and that the left-back has ‘blown away’ representatives of the club.

The defender has been an essential player for the Robins this season, starting 25 games for the club as Lee Johnson’s side look to end the Championship season in a play-off spot, and Kelly’s performances have led the club to this impressive achievement.

Valued at £1.8 million on Transfermarkt, Liverpool could get the England U-21 international on the cheap, and at just 20-years-old Klopp will be signing a player who the German could use in his first season on Merseyside.

Liverpool have a good history with buying from the Championship, with Joe Gomez being the most recent and most successful example of the club buying young and cheap from the division, and Kelly could be the next in line for the Reds.

Versatile in the defence and with the potential to be a Premier League quality player, Kelly could be a big success in Liverpool. Able to cover both Robertson at left-back or any of the centre-backs, the Bristol-born defender ticks all the boxes to flourish into a solid player for the club.

The Reds have a proven history of buying players on the cheap and developing them into first-team players, and in Kelly, they could have the next example of this claim if Klopp goes in for the defender this summer.

Liverpool fans, would you take Kelly as a summer signing? Let us know!

Woeful: Manchester United fans aren’t happy with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United fans aren’t happy with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after they watched their side lose in humiliating fashion to Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The Red Devils registered just a single shot on target – which came courtesy of an Anthony Martial potshot in the latter stages – and never even looked like scoring as the Toffees steamrolled them by four goals to nil.

Which “global superstar” has just been named Man Utd’s worst ever January signing? Find out in the video above…

Solskjaer strangely played Victor Lindelof at right-back to accommodate Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in the centre, despite the Swede being arguably the club’s best centre-back this season.

The former Cardiff boss was clearly beaten on a tactical level by Marco Silva, who set his side up to not give the Red Devils a moments rest and saw his plan unfold to perfection.

United have now lost six of their last eight games, and the club’s supporters on Twitter have expressed their displeasure at the Norwegian after they were thrashed on Sunday…

Just a genius: Tottenham fans pay tribute to Dimitar Berbatov

[ad_pod ]

Dimitar Berbatov – what a footballer.

He has actually not yet officially retired, but has been without a club since leaving Kerala Blasters last year.

Now 38, it would probably be fair to say that the forward’s best years are behind him, although he has never been a player to rely on pace and energy.

Berbatov arrived in English football from Bayer Leverkusen in 2006 and went on to score 46 times in 102 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur in all competitions.

Manchester United ultimately took the Bulgarian away from Spurs in 2008, but it seems clear that the Tottenham fans still have a high opinion of the striker given some of their comments about him.

Indeed, on Thursday, the London club’s official Twitter page posted a video of a goal which Berbatov scored against West Ham United.

And that led to a number of Spurs supporters taking to social media.

Some are still unhappy with Berbatov for joining United, but there is a general appreciation for his talent, which has helped him enjoy a brilliant career.

Liverpool: Adrien Rabiot is the perfect man to replace James Milner

If there’s one team in the Premier League that are stacked with midfielders, it’s Liverpool.

The Reds have an incredible selection of players in the midfield area of the pitch to call upon when everyone is fit from Naby Keita to Fabinho to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and one of the more surprising stars of the pack in recent years is James Milner.

The veteran midfielder joined Liverpool on a free in 2015, and despite at first being an underwhelming signing from fans, the former Manchester City man has gone on to be one of the team’s most important players.

But all good things must come to an end, and it is likely this summer when Milner’s deal runs up, the veteran midfielder will depart Merseyside after three seasons of impressive service.

Losing Milner will be a loss for Liverpool both on and off the pitch, but there is a midfielder out there, also available on a free, who will be the perfect player to replace the retired England international.

According to Football Insider, the Reds are interested in signing PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot on a free when the Frenchman’s contract runs out this summer, and the playmaker would be perfect to replace Milner.

Rabiot has been one of PSG’s best midfielders in recent seasons and has reclaimed his spot in the team despite off the pitch problems, and the creative French international would be a good fit for Liverpool as someone who can influence the game in the final third with his creative footballing brain.

Milner leaving will be a hard pill to swallow for Liverpool fans, but if Jurgen Klopp can replace him with Rabiot, supporters will be quick to forget about the veteran midfielder after his departure.

Liverpool fans, would you take Rabiot as Milner’s replacement? Let us know!
