Southampton: Ralph Hasenhuttl cannot forget about defence amid rebuild of attack

Ralph Hasenhuttl has started the revamp of his Southampton attack with the addition of Moussa Djenepo from Standard Liege, and he does not look finished there.

According to The Sun, the Saints are looking to tie up a deal for Birmingham City striker Che Adams, while L’Equipe (via Sport Witness) are reporting that the club are also interested in Bordeaux forward Francois Kamano.

With Danny Ings having struggled with injuries last season and Mohamed Elyounoussi, who failed to score a single Premier League goal, failing to make an impact, it is not hard to understand Hasenhuttl’s recruitment strategy this summer.

That being said, amid this rebuild of the team’s attack, the former RB Leipzig boss would be crazy to forget about his defence.

There are rumours that Ryan Bertrand could leave before the start of the new campaign, with the Daily Mail reporting that both Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid are interested in his services. Matt Targett alone would surely not be enough for that left-back position.

Meanwhile, Southampton also look like they could do with another central defender. Turning 31 in August, Maya Yoshida is not getting any younger. And with Jannik Vestergaard’s lack of pace, something highlighted by Bleacher Report when the 26-year-old was being linked with a move to Tottenham back in 2016, there will always be concerns whenever the Saints come up against a fast striker with him in the side.

Ultimately, after all of these potential attacking signings, Hasenhuttl would be wise to follow them up with a couple of defensive additions.

Now we are talking: Man United fans want Icardi as Lukaku replacement

[ad_pod ]

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Inter Milan are keen to sign Romelu Lukaku from Manchester United this summer but must first sell Mauro Icardi.

Lukaku struggled for consistency during the 2018-19 campaign, managing just 15 goals in all competitions for the 20-time English champions.

Icardi, meanwhile, was stripped of the Inter captaincy in the early stages of 2019 after a high-profile falling out with the Italian giants.

According to Romano, Antonio Conte’s side want to sign Lukaku but the Serie A outfit would not be able to finance the deal unless Icardi is sold.

The United fans have been on social media responding to the claim in The Guardian.

And many have called on their club to attempt to secure a swap deal.

Icardi has had his problems at Inter but has still managed an impressive 124 goals in 219 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Manchester United fans react as Wayne Rooney scores from inside his own half

[ad_pod ]

As players age, they often lose a yard of pace or struggle to play a full 90 minutes, but one thing that never deserts them is their technique. And boy did Wayne Rooney prove that last night.

The Manchester United legend scored an absolutely insane goal in the MLS for DC United as he hearkened back to his days at Old Trafford with a goal from inside his own half.

After seeing their side’s record goal-scorer roll back the years with a vintage effort, many Red Devils fans took to Twitter to voice their appreciation for Rooney.

Many felt the strike was deserving of the Puskas award this year, which is given to the scorer of the best goal of the season. Indeed, some United supporters thought Rooney’s goal was evidence he could still hack it at the highest level and insisted he was probably better than some of their current strikers.

Fans of the Manchester side were glowing in their praise of the former England international, simply declaring him a “legend” and even questioning whether they got rid of him a bit too soon.

Tottenham eye move for Mariano as back-up to Kane

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move for Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz, per AS.

What’s the word?

Spurs are reportedly looking to replace Fernando Llorente, whose contract has expired at the club.

He spent the entirety of his career at the club as a back-up to Harry Kane and enjoyed an integral role as Mauricio Pochettino’s side reached the Champions League final, scoring the winning goal in the quarter-final second leg against Manchester City.

And AS report that the north London club have made an enquiry for Mariano as they look to strengthen their attack.

However, the piece also claims that the former Lyon forward is keen to stay at Santiago Bernabeu, having only re-joined the club last summer after 14 months in Ligue 1.

An exciting option

This would be an excellent signing for Spurs as they look to bring in back-up to Kane.

As it is, they currently have just Vincent Janssen behind the England captain as an out-and-out forward option; he played just three Premier League games for the club in 2018/19.

Mariano, though, appears to be a solid goalscorer even when he is given limited opportunities.

The 25-year-old struggled with injuries last season but managed to score three goals in the Spanish top-flight despite making just three starts.

During his time at Lyon, he scored 21 goals in 48 games, including six assists, and that is perhaps the sample size from which Spurs’ scouts should draw.

A younger, more mobile option than Llorente, he could be a reliable recruit this summer.

Everton Transfer Roundup: Onyekuru bid, Leao interest, Kean news

[ad_pod ]

Friday’s Everton transfer roundup gave you a bid made for a Senegalese midfielder, an offer lodged for a goalkeeper and interest in a Bosnian. Today’s edition reports on Serie A eyes on a winger, the pursuit of a Ligue 1 ace and an update on an Italian international.

Napoli make Onyekuru bid

According to Belgian outfit Le Soir, Napoli have made a bid to Everton for Henry Onyekuru. The sum is apparently €16m (£13.4m). The 22-year-old Nigerian spent last season on loan with Galatasaray and scored 14 goals for the Super Lig side.

Toffees launch Leao approach

La Voix du Nord is reporting that Everton have approached Lille over Rafael Leao. They’re reportedly willing to pay within the region of €40m (£35.9m) for his services, but no concrete bid has been made. Three other clubs are also keen, including Spanish side Valencia.

Kean news

Everton are preparing to offer €45m (£40.4m) for Juventus’ Moise Kean according to Tuttosport. Ajax are apparently interested in the 19-year-old, who scored six goals in 13 appearances in Italy’s top tier for the Old Lady last campaign.

Gabriel Jesus’ importance at Manchester City has been misunderstood in the media

[ad_pod ]Every fan-base has a player at their club who is misunderstood.Usually they are either under-rated or over-rated by those who only see him in action sporadically or, in certain cases, the media wilfully misconstrue as only they can. It can drive a fan-base mad, frankly because they are close enough to know the truth. In the instance of Gabriel Jesus both of these forms of misinterpretation have come to the fore this summer, first deriving from aÂstory originating in Spain back in April that suggested the 22-year-old striker was unhappy at the club and actively seeking a departure in the close season.Brazil’s legendary striker Rivaldo then stoked the fire, per M.E.N, by suggesting that Jesus’ career would best be served away from the bright lights of Manchester. Then came his successful Copa America outings that included a goal and assist in the final and suddenly two and two were added up to five.Watch Manchester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The first part of the equation had it that Jesus is unsettled in Manchester, discontent at a lack of playing time due to being second fiddle to Sergio Aguero. That that the player himself scorched the story last month by claiming a departure is “out of the question” for both him and Aguero is neither here nor there.

The transfer window is presently open therefore every rumour has some degree of currency.

Fair enough, City fans can take that with a pinch of salt. After all, we’re used now to seeing rumours do the rounds whenever one from Aguero or Jesus endures a lengthy spell on the bench. It’s an easy punch to throw but attempts to disrupt the atmosphere at City have been made in vain thus far.

Furthermore anecdotally – and sometimes too via the press – we’re aware of how settled Jesus is in the North West, in the company of his close friends and mother. We’re aware too of how highly he is valued within the club. “Gabriel is an incredible guy,†Pep Guardiola said in May on his decision to start the former Palmeiras prodigy ahead of Aguero for the FA Cup final. It has recently been revealed that Jesus will be given the number 9 jersey ahead of 2019/20.

Suddenly circumstantial evidence based purely on the forward’s back-up status at City doesn’t look so strong does it?

The second part of the equation is equally a misnomer: a fruitful Copa America is now somehow proof that Jesus is brilliant at what he does after all.

City supporters are already very conscious of this. Last season he scored seven goals and made three assists from eight league starts while his early scoring ratio soon after his arrival in January 2017 had us agape in astonishment.

His work-rate off the ball meanwhile is highly commendable with an all-round attitude to match. He is cherished at the Etihad. He is also viewed as elite.

That didn’t stop some on Twitter however – non-City supporters naturally – having their minds changed by his performances in Brazil this past month…

Every fan-base has a player at their club who is misunderstood. It can drive a fan-base mad.

Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard shares Instagram story as squad bid farewell to Australia

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United are now officially done with their pre-season challenges in Australia.

After winning both of their pre-season matches in the Land Down Under, the Red Devils have set off for Singapore, where they will face Inter Milan on July 20th.

Still, seeing how they’ve spent a lot of time on the WACA Ground in Perth, the United squad just couldn’t resist playing some cricket and paying homage to England’s incredible World Cup-winning run earlier this summer.

The whole squad took part in it, and even Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was seen with a bat in his hands.

Jesse Lingard took to Instagram to share the video with the fans as the Red Devils switched sports for a short while.

This effectively represented Manchester United’s farewell to Australia and the great stadium that hosted them in their first pre-season games.

But the journey is far from being over and the Red Devils still have a way to go before the new Premier League season kicks off in early August.

Arsenal fans boo Shkodran Mustafi: The point of no return

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Shkodran Mustafi’s Arsenal career has been plagued with horrific mistakes and embarrassing gaffes, and he has become the source of several memes on social media for his apparent ineptitude in defending. But, this summer has felt oddly different. It no longer feels like a running joke. It feels like the bitter end of a long drawn-out story.

The German World Cup winner has been the subject of heavy criticism from fans and pundits alike, and most of it has been fairly understandable. The centre-back’s highlight reel of bloopers are worthy of making its way onto ‘You’ve Been Framed’, and it’s a rather fine effort on the part of the 27-year-old that he continues to think of new ways of shooting himself in the foot.

But, his mistake against Crystal Palace back in April, when he allowed Wilfried Zaha to ghost through to fire home, felt like an oddly cathartic moment. No longer was the defender’s error simply one for people to throw their hands in the air and jokingly declare ‘oh there goes Shkodran again’. It felt like things had reached the point of no return. He had cost the club a chance at Champions League football.

And if Mustafi had harboured hopes that a summer away from the limelight would help see Gunners fans forget all about it and start with a fresh slate, then he was sadly mistaken.

The German was roundly booed by Arsenal’s contingent of American fans on the pre-season tour of the USA, whilst he received a similarly cold welcome when the north London side entertained Lyon at the Emirates on Sunday. The announcer’s call of Mustafi’s introduction in the second-half was met with widespread groans and boos, and whether you like him or not, it was certainly sad to see.

Indeed, reports earlier this summer had suggested that Unai Emery had decided enough was enough with his bungling defender, but the 27-year-old still remains on the Gunners’ books with less than a month to go in the transfer window, and due to the fact that no new defender has come in for this campaign, the German may well have fancied his chances of having one last shot.

But after seeing and hearing the north London side’s fan base turn so unequivocally against one of their own this pre-season, we are surely entering the final chapter of Mustafi’s Arsenal career once and for all, the one titled ‘the end’.

Arsenal fans are buzzing with Kieran Tierney transfer reports

[ad_pod ]

Kieran Tierney’s potential transfer to Arsenal has dominated football headlines all summer, but there has now been a concrete development in regards to his future.

It was reported late on Wednesday night that the Gunners had agreed a fee with Celtic for the transfer of the Scotland international. They are expected to pay £25m for the 22-year-old, which will be a Scottish record.

Unai Emery and co have made the left-back one of their top targets during this transfer window and have already had two bids rejected for him.

[ad_pod ]

However, they now appear to be close to their man. Tierney has made 170 appearances for Celtic and has won 11 trophies with the Bhoys, so the London club are within touching distance of a player who already has substantial experience even at such a young age.

Naturally, the Gunners faithful appear delighted with the news, and they have taken to Twitter to share their excitement.

Crystal Palace’s transfer deadline day business is done, according to Roy Hodgson

[ad_pod ]Football FanCast‘s News articles summarise the biggest stories in world football, based on information from other sources.Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has issued a major Crystal Palace deadline day update, confirming that Wilfried Zaha is staying and no further signings will be arriving having spoken to manager Roy Hodgson.

Bridge had tweeted on Wednesday that he was expecting up to four new arrivals to come in at Selhurst Park – although this was before the announcements of Victor Camarasa and James McCarthy – but no more have been forthcoming.

Meanwhile, Zaha is reported to have handed in a transfer request to try and force through a move away with Everton a preferred destination, but the chances of that happening have now been ended by Hodgson.

Verdict

While Palace should be happy in a way that they are keeping their Ivorian talisman at SE25, they must now get him in the right frame of mind with the new Premier League season just days away.

In addition, there must also be some concerns that they haven’t added either a new striker or a right-back to their squad, following the departures of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Alexander Sorloth.

[ad_pod ]

The south London outfit look to be short of quality and depth in both of those positions now, with Christian Benteke far from prolific in the previous two seasons and the injury-prone Connor Wickham only playing 42 matches in four seasons at Selhurst. Meanwhile, it could well be Joel Ward who is trusted to fill in at full-back.

A tough period beckons between now and January, then.
