Tottenham Hotspur: Jose Mourinho keen to steal a march on Liverpool in race for Victor Osimhen

Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a late move for Victor Osimhen after Liverpool appear to be in pole position to sign the Lille striker this summer.

According to The Daily Express, Jose Mourinho is keen to steal a march on Liverpool in the race to sign Osimhen in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp is desperate to bolster his attacking options amid interest in his front men Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Lille are looking to offload Osimhen to raise some funds to cover the costs of these uncertain times.

Napoli are eager to sign the Nigerian, but he has indicated he wants to play in the Premier League next season.

Recent reports had suggested he was on his way to Serie A after Lille received a huge offer worth a reported €81m fee from the Azzurri, but several Premier League clubs are tracking the situation, and a deal seems far from done.

Osimhen, 21, has emerged as one of Europe’s hottest properties after a stellar debut season in Ligue 1, scoring 18 goals overall. He has followed in the footsteps of a long line of forwards to make a name for themselves at the Mastiffs, including the likes of former Chelsea star Eden Hazard and Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe.

Spurs must sign a backup striker to provide cover for Harry Kane, as the 26-year-old was ruled out for a significant portion of the season after suffering a hamstring injury.

However, Mourinho could miss out on Osimhen if he hesitates any longer, as Klopp has already enquired about his availability.

Make no mistake, Osimhen would be a dream signing to make, as his record is there for all to see, but it is hard to imagine he will be anything other than that in the summer.

Putting it simply, Spurs cannot afford to spend such a huge sum at the moment, considering the fact Daniel Levy has just borrowed a £175m loan from the Bank of England to alleviate the economic impact of these unprecedented circumstances.

Les Dogues are holding out for at least £70m for the Nigerian international, which is well outside of Mourinho’s price range.

Mourinho knows his budget has been severely slashed and he will be forced to rely on swap deals, signing free agents and hunting for bargains in the transfer market.

Liverpool: Fans urge the club to sign Ismaila Sarr following recent transfer links

Liverpool are reportedly eyeing up a potential move for Watford’s Ismaila Sarr this summer.

According to The Mirror (relayed via @AnfieldEdition), the Senegalese winger is on the radar of the Premier League champions. However, a failed moved for Piotr Zielinski from Udinese back in 2016 could resurface and scupper any movement due to bad blood between Liverpool and the Pozzo family, who own both the Italian club and Watford (via Liverpool.com).

Sarr has been in good form for the struggling Hornets this season, tallying five goals and five assists in the league so far (via Transfermarkt). He is the club’s second top scorer for this term with six goals overall, behind only Troy Deeney with nine (according to BBC Sport).

No transfer fee has been announced but the 22-year-old’s current Transfermarkt value is £22 million, which could reflect in an asking price should Watford be relegated. The Hornets are currently 17th in the league table, outside of the drop-zone by just three points.

Two Liverpool fans think the Reds should take advantage of Watford’s difficult situation, with one tweeting ‘we have to get him’ and the other telling the club ‘don’t think twice’.

Man City given boost in David Alaba chase following contract stalemate

Even though it might’ve been hard to imagine Bayern Munich ever letting themselves get into this position in the first place, the Bavarians are, according to a new report from Bild, at a stalemate in regards with David Alaba’s contract renewal.

This could indeed pave the way for Manchester City, or other interested parties, who would love nothing more than to grab the world-class player with a significant discount.

The same news outlet states the problem, as is usually the case, lies in the wages proposed by the club. So much so that the two parties have reportedly reached a stalemate since the Bavarians are refusing to offer collective wages that exceed €20m (£18m).

For the 28-year-old, that is simply not enough and his agent could now even be threatening the scenario of Alaba leaving on a free once his current deal with Bayern expires. This, needless to say, has immediately alerted both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who would love to snatch the player up for a significant discount, or better yet, on a free transfer next summer.

Pep Guardiola himself is said to be a big admirer of Alaba and knows the player well from the time they worked together in the Bundesliga. Of course, if an agreement with the player can’t be reached, it’s largely expected Bayern will rather sell him for cheap now than wait a year longer to then offload an unhappy camper as a free agent.

For that reason, a move to the Etihad could be on the cards for the 28-year-old star.

Verdict

Needless to say, Man City are currently in an ideal situation – either they buy a world-class player for ‘peanuts’ now or wait an additional year to scoop him up for free. But, Guardiola should also be wary of other teams’ interest as well and PSG definitely have the financial power to give Alaba what he wants.

Seeing how versatile and how talented the 28-year-old is, it does seem like he just might be worth every penny.

Manchester United: Jamie O’Hara discusses Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial

Following Manchester United’s Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla, there has been a lot of discussion around what the club should be doing this summer to prepare for next season.

The Red Devils’ torment was amplified last night as Romelu Lukaku, who was sold by United to Inter Milan last summer, has advanced to the final of the competition and scored two goals in their 5-0 semi-final victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.

The comparisons have now started between Lukaku and Martial, with former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara commenting on the matter. Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, he said: “If you think about what Manchester United need right now, it’s a number nine. They had Lukaku but they got rid of him, and he’s got 33 goals in 50 games for Inter Milan.

“Lukaku has proven at Inter that he’s a world-class striker, a world-class player. For me, Anthony Martial is not the number nine who is going to take Manchester United back to the top and back to the Premier League title, I just can’t see it.”

Here O’Hara is saying that United should not have let him go, an understandable point to make as the Belgian definitely has an eye for goal, netting 227 times in 472 career appearances, per Transfermarkt.

However, the forward wanted to leave Old Trafford and it could have ruined the morale in the squad if he stayed around and sulked, so it was probably best to let him depart.

Martial is also three years younger than the Belgian and has shown how good he can be this season, as he has managed 17 goals in 32 Premier League appearances. Although this is a lower return than Lukaku’s 23 in 36 Serie A games, it shows that Martial has the quality to become a world-class forward and, when he reaches his prime, he could overtake Lukaku as he is already close when it comes to goals.

Both are proven goalscorers but O’Hara’s comparison seems like a weird one to make, especially since Lukaku wanted to leave. United will need to add some squad depth upfront as Odion Ighalo will depart when his loan expires and that would lkeave the club with only Jesse Lingard and Daniel James as cover for the front three.

United fans, what did you make of O’Hara’s comparison of Lukaku to Martial? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Liverpool fans drool over Takumi Minamino’s pre-season display

Having gone through a quiet transfer window last summer, Liverpool did end up reinforcing their squad in January earlier this year, bringing in Takumi Minamino from RB Salzburg.

The Japan international didn’t get too many opportunities to shine however, making just ten appearances in the Premier League, totaling only 242 minutes of football in the competition.

Against VfB Stuttgart in a pre-season friendly clash on Saturday afternoon, Jurgen Klopp brought Minamino on at half-time, stepping into the Roberto Firmino role as a false number nine.

And after seeing his performance, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of Liverpool fans brought Firmino’s name into the conversation, with one supporter suggesting Minamino is the “back-up” they need for the Brazilian, and another even claiming that he’s the “perfect” long-term replacement for him.

Another supporter meanwhile pointed to how it took some time for Fabinho to settle into life at Anfield, and that perhaps Reds fans should be patient with Minamino too.

Having had a few months to acclimatise to life at Anfield, Liverpool fans may finally get to see the very best of Minamino next season.

The 25-year-old has the incredibly difficult job of trying to displace the likes of Firmino, Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane in the starting line-up, but as a potential rotation option to help Klopp navigate the multiple competitions the Reds will be involved in, he could be a game-changer.

Minamino looks ready to shine.

Brighton & Hove Albion: Graham Potter remains coy on short-term future of Viktor Gyokeres

Following his team’s Carabao Cup victory over Portsmouth last night, Brighton manager Graham Potter addressed questions on the short-term future of Viktor Gyokeres at the Amex Stadium.

The Swedish striker, who has recently been linked with a loan move to Swansea, rounded off the scoring in Albion’s 4-0 win on just his sixth appearance for the club.

When speaking about the Seagulls’ immediate plans for the 22-year-old, Potter said (via Brighton & Hove Independent): “All things are possible. We have to make the right decisions around our squad and I think he can help our group and contribute. He will only get better as a player as well and someone who can help the group.”

Last night, Gyokeres scored his first goal for Brighton on what was his first appearance for the club since February 2019, while he is still awaiting a Premier League debut (as per TransferMarkt). He had a decent spell on loan at St Pauli in Germany’s second tier last season, though, with seven goals and four assists in 28 matches.

The Swedish prospect made a strong case for further Seagulls inclusion after his outing against Portsmouth, getting four shots on target and making three key passes while misplacing only two passes all night (as per Sofascore). His performance drew praise from Brighton & Hove Independent reporter Derren Howard, who wrote that he “worked hard and led the line pretty well and offers Brighton another option”.

The challenge for Gyokeres now is whether he can force his way into Potter’s first team reckoning on a regular basis. Neal Maupay and Aaron Connolly, who scored 14 goals between them last term, are ahead of him in the centre-forward pecking order. However, with Glenn Murray gone on loan to Watford and Florin Andone horrendously injury-prone, the Swede could certainly be a useful squad option if he remains in Sussex.

There is also the matter of what comes of Brighton’s reported interest in Liverpool striker Divock Origi, who is unlikely to be left with a peripheral role if he comes to the Amex given his penchant for scoring in big games.

Gyokeres has certainly done his best to stake a claim for further inclusion at Brighton with an impressive all-round performance against Portsmouth, capped by his 71st-minute goal.

While a loan move to a Championship club like Swansea could offer him a better chance of regular first team action, Potter doesn’t have a huge depth of centre-forward options and could yet be tempted to keep him at the Amex, especially if Maupay or Connolly were to become unavailable.

However, if Origi or another striker were to come in the door, that could be the spark for the Swedish prospect to go back out on loan.

Brighton fans, can you see Gyokeres having a significant part to play at the Amex this season? Comment below with your views!

Rangers fans slam Ianis Hagi’s display against Hibernian

They may have continued their unbeaten streak, but Rangers will surely feel their 2-2 draw against Hibernian on Sunday was two dropped points.

The Gers enjoyed 70% of the possession at Easter Road, and took 12 more total shots than the home side (19-7). And yet, even despite the dominance, they couldn’t convert their opportunities in front of goal, and a couple of defensive lapses at the other end cost them big time.

Are you a massive Rangers fan? Know everything about the club? Well do you know your Gary Stevens from your Michael Ball? This quiz will separate the loyal from the fake…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And whilst Ianis Hagi played a key part in Scott Arfield’s lovely team goal, the Romanian struggled to impose him on the game, and ended up losing six of his nine total duels.

After seeing his performance, Rangers fans took to Twitter to share their reactions about the attacker.

A couple of Rangers fans insisted Hagi was miles off the pace, and urged Gerrard during the game to take him off.

The 21-year-old has scored just the once in nine games for Rangers this season, and there’s no doubt Steven Gerrard’s side need a lot more from the talented Romanian.

Getting him to be consistent even during a game could be key to whether the Gers can finally lift the league title, and if he can add goals to his locker like his manager did, then the Ibrox side will fancy their chances of ending their long wait.

Manchester United: Fans unhappy with club’s reports plans to offer contract extension to Paul Pogba

Several Manchester United fans are unhappy with the club’s reported plans to offer a contract extension to Paul Pogba.

The Daily Mail reported that the Red Devils are set to activate a one-year option on the Frenchman’s contract in order to protect his value, with his current deal at Old Trafford set to expire in 2022. The news was later shared on Twitter by @utdreport.

While the club have yet to formally discuss a longer extension to the 27-year-old’s contract, they know that they have the safety net of extending his current deal (as per Daily Mail).

Pogba became the then-most expensive player in world football when he rejoined United from Juventus in 2016 for £89.2m and has scored 32 goals in 159 games for the club since then, as well as making the PFA Team of the Year in 2018/19.

However, the midfielder has also been a lightning rod for criticism from elements of the Old Trafford faithful for some mediocre performances and has been accused by some pundits of having attitude problems, with persistent rumours of a move away from the club. He also came under from numerous supporters over a less than stellar display in the recent defeat to Crystal Palace.

These United fans on Twitter voiced their opposition to the reported plans to extend his contract, with one supporter fearing that it will “get messy”:

Aston Villa must surely rue the day Idrissa Gueye joined Everton

It’s fair to say that Idrissa Gueye has done well for himself since leaving Aston Villa in the summer of 2016.

The Senegal international arrived in the Premier League from French side Lille a year earlier, with a deal supposedly worth around £9m taking him to Villa Park.

He made 38 appearances in his one and only season at the club, before Villa’s relegation to the Championship effectively sealed his fate. Everton were the club to step in and take him off their hands, activating his release clause of £7m – Tony Xia even admitted on Twitter that “if he wants to go, we are powerless”.

Despite not having much to say in the decision of him leaving, Villa surely still feel a sense of regret that Gueye no longer plays for them, or at least didn’t give them more than just that one season.

His former teammate at Everton, Kurt Zouma, waxed lyrical about his abilities, saying: “We are very happy to have him because the work he is doing in midfield is just unbelievable. Every single game, he is doing the same thing – he is running everywhere, tackling everywhere, recovering balls, passing well. Everything comes with confidence. I think he is playing more forward now and we all know Gana has quality, with the ball and without the ball.”

It’s quite telling about just how good he is, that Gueye left Everton to join French giants PSG last summer for a fee in the region of £30m. And at the Parc des Princes, the Senegalese midfielder has established himself as a vital part of their success, winning four trophies in his first season at the club: Ligue 1, French Cup, French League Cup and the French Super Cup.

Villa sold him for a £2m loss, and have watched him develop into a starting calibre midfielder for last season’s Champions League finalists. It’s been quite the journey, and whilst the Midlands club may not have had much of a say in keeping him, it must surely be mixed feelings whenever they see Gueye in action: a tinge of regret that they couldn’t keep him, and a feeling of happiness at seeing him do so well.

And in other news, Aston Villa must wave goodbye to this ace next summer.

Everton: Fans laud Gylfi Sigurdsson

Gylfi Sigurdsson has had a mixed time at Everton, but the Toffees’ latest post has some fans calling for his reinstatement into the starting XI.

The Iceland international was signed for a club-record fee of £45m in 2017 after scoring 27 goals and providing 25 assists in three Premier League campaigns with Swansea City. Six goals and five assists in all competitions during the 2017/18 campaign was a slow start, but he returned to his best the following term, managing 14 and seven respectively.

Last time out, though, he was a shadow of his former self, seeing himself involved in just six goals in 38 games. The Everton supporters were far from happy with him – when it was suggested he could depart for MLS side DC United during the previous transfer window, the Toffees faithfulÂwere delighted.

However, it seems they may have completed a U-turn. On Monday, Everton’s official Twitter page shared a video of the 31-year-old scoring against West Ham in 2019. That led to many supporters showing support for Sigurdsson, with one fan even calling for him to start against Southampton next weekend. Another, meanwhile, has suggested he should be in the side ahead of Portugal international Andre Gomes.

They took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about SigurdssonÂ
