Man Utd Plot Bid For "Complete" £43m Sensation

Manchester United appear to be looking to strengthen their options at right-back this summer, following an update on the club's reported interest in Monaco star, Vanderson.

What's the latest on Vanderson to Man United?

According to Brazilian outlet, Zero Hora, the Red Devils are said to have proposed a potential offer to the Ligue 1 outfit for the signing of the 21-year-old, albeit with that unofficial bid having seemingly fallen short of the selling club's €50m (£43m) asking price.

As the piece adds, however, there is still hope for United that a deal can be agreed for the former Gremio ace, with it said that the promising full-back is 'likely' to seal an exit from Stade Louis II in the coming weeks, with a move to Old Trafford seemingly 'possible'.

The report does also go on to note that Erik ten Hag and co will face competition for the defender's signature, however, with a host of Premier League clubs also keeping tabs on his progress.

Who is Vanderson?

The 5 foot 8 Brazilian could well represent a long-term solution for Ten Hag on the right side of the defence, with the youngster having previously been hailed as a "complete full-back" by talent scout Jacek Kulig as a marker of his exciting potential.

With United having only recently handed fellow right-back Diogo Dalot a new long-term deal until 2028, it would appear that the signing of Vanderson would then spell bad news for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, despite the Englishman's resurgence of late.

Man United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The latter man had previously looked certain to move on heading into the January transfer window after making just a solitary, four-minute cameo appearance prior to the World Cup break, although the 25-year-old has since established himself as a regular fixture in the side, having even started in the FA Cup final clash last weekend.

Even so, however, The Athletic revealed back in April that Ten Hag was keen to find a more 'attacking' option in that right-back role, with there a potential for Wan-Bissaka to be moved on if a suitable target could be found.

Vanderson, therefore, could well be the man to push the former Crystal Palace ace out the door, having offered a far greater attacking threat of late after scoring once and registering four assists in 31 league appearances this season as well as creating six big chances, while Wan-Bissaka failed to score or register an assist, while also creating just one big chance in 19 league outings.

Interestingly, the Monaco man could also prove more effective in a defensive sense after averaging an impressive 2.7 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game in 2022/23, with a greater record than the current United man, who averaged just 2.1 and 1.2 for the same two metrics, respectively.

Having made an "exceptional adaptation" to life in France over the last 18 months or so since his arrival from his homeland – according to former boss Philippe Clement – the hope will be that Vanderson can slot in just as comfortably if he is to make the move to the Theatre of Dreams this summer.

If that deal is to come to fruition, Wan-Bissaka will certainly be fearing for his place at the club…

Leeds Could Land Hernandez 2.0 In ‘Unbelievable’ £5k-p/w Star

Leeds United have been on a sharp decline over the past few years since completing an exceptional campaign in 20/21 in their first year back in the Premier League since devastating relegation in 2004.

The proud outfit finished ninth under the master tactician Marcelo Bielsa but spent the ensuing campaign embroiled in a relegation battle before succumbing to the drop this time around, and comprehensive change is now needed to fix the issues and ensure that a coveted return to the top-flight is followed by sustained success.

Many will be shipped on, such is the way in football, but the Whites boast enough power to forge a title bid regardless and must work with diligence to make signings of the highest calibre.

This is why rumours of interest in Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer must be acted upon, with the Whites eyeing a summer transfer for the Brazilian dynamo this summer, according to Football League World.

The publication states that the 49ers are planning to raid this year's defeated Championship play-off finalists for the 25-year-old, who captivated supporters with his performances this term and was touted at £10m last year following interest from Brighton & Hove Albion – though this figure may well have ballooned now.

How good is Gustavo Hamer?

Signing for the Sky Blues from PEC Zwolle for around £1.5m in 2020 after their promotion from League One, Hamer has made 130 appearances and been one of the key components of a side that has made increments to surge into promotion contention.

It is this year that Hamer has truly grown into his skin and tantalised his merit as a destructive midfielder capable of flourishing at the top level, scoring 11 goals and supplying ten assists from 45 outings across all competitions – including two fantastic strikes in the play-offs.

Praised as "unbelievable" by former Coventry City goalkeeper Marko Marosi, Hamer is a first-rate orchestrator for his side and excels through his work rate, tenacity and flair.

As such, he could be the successor to Pablo Hernandez's throne at Elland Road, with the Spaniard integral in securing a path back to prominence at Leeds and heralded as an "unreal" gem who "played like a demon" by The Athletic's Phil Hay.

Posting 36 goals and 41 assists over 175 appearances for the Whites, the 38-year-old maestro's vision, ball-playing technique and footballing intellect left him a revered figure as he orchestrated a return to the top-flight, and Hamer can now adopt the mantle from the middle of the park.

The Coventry ace ranks among the top 4% of midfielders across Men's Next 8 divisions – below the top European five – for rate of non-penalty goals, the top 3% for rate of assists, the top 4% for shot-creating actions, the top 12% for progressive passes, and the top 14% for rate of tackles per 90, as per FBref.

Hernandez, comparatively, averaged 2.1 shots, 2.3 key passes, and 1.3 tackles per game, as per WhoScored, during Leeds' triumphant campaign in 19/20, scoring nine goals and assists apiece from 27 starts in the second tier, outlining his similarity to the club's £5k-per-week transfer target.

Hamer's success lies in variegating his approach, something he achieves with aplomb, and while Coventry will be reluctant to sell him to a promotion-chasing rival, if Leeds succeed after lodging a formal offer they would wield one of the division's brightest stars and their finest catalyst since Hernandez.

Bad light denies Sri Lanka A in high-scoring game

Sri Lanka A conceded a total of 305 to West Indies A, but they were within 58 runs of victory when bad light forced an early end to the game. Duckworth-Lewis calculations found them eight runs short

Bad light denied Sri Lanka A in Colombo as they fell eight runs short of the Duckworth-Lewis revised target of 257, conceding the one-day series 0-3 to West Indies A.An interruption due to rain in the 12th over had reduced the match to 47 overs a side. West Indies A made 305 for 5 in that time with centuries from captain Jason Mohammed and Andre McCarthy. But Sri Lanka A were taking a right tilt at the target. They needed 58 runs in 54 balls with three wickets in hand, and they had hard-hitting allrounder Dasun Shanaka at the crease on 32 off 26 when the umpires called the players off the field due to bad light. With no further cricket possible, Sri Lanka A were left agonisingly short.West Indies A, though, would have been thankful for the runs they had on the board. They had won the toss, opted to bat and found themselves at 59 for 3 in the 15th over before Mohammed and McCarthy joined forces. Their 163-run partnership not only revived the innings but put their team in a position of dominance. Mohammed finished unbeaten on 105 off 108 deliveries while McCarthy – from 6 off 13 – racked up 102 off 75, hitting left-arm spinner Sachith Pathirana for four fours in the 31st over. With a total of 305 on the board, West Indies A strengthened their hold of the game by allowing only one Sri Lanka A batsman – opener Danushka Gunathilaka – to cross fifty. But with the hosts at 166 for 6, their lower-middle order started fighting back.Pathirana and Shanaka hammered 51 runs in 33 balls for the seventh wicket and when West Indies A broke that stand, Nuwan Kulasekara and Shanaka bashed 31 in 13 balls to inspire hopes of a consolation victory. But it was not to be.Having lost the game by such a narrow margin, they may have wondered how things might turned out if their bowlers had pushed harder having reduced West Indies A to 59 for 3, or about how Charith Asalanka had eaten up 41 balls to make only 23.

Australia's discards and rookies share Adelaide welcome

The scenes at Adelaide Airport reflected these strange and tumultuous times for Australian cricket, with players called in to and on their way out of the Test squad crossing paths

Daniel Brettig21-Nov-20162:59

‘We can build something new together’ – Hazlewood

While a few metres away Matt Renshaw and Peter Handscomb collected their bags for the very first time as Australian Test cricketers, Callum Ferguson reflected on how he had been picked and discarded in the space of a single week. The scenes at Adelaide Airport – apart from the scuffle between South Africa’s support staff and an eager television reporter – reflected these strange and tumultuous times for Australian cricket. Handscomb and Matthew Wade arrived from Melbourne a few minutes before Renshaw and Usman Khawaja jetted in from Brisbane. They were accompanied by the South Australian side that failed by 12 balls to eke out a draw against Queensland in the Sheffield Shield match at the Gabba. After the travails of the past two weeks it isn’t hard to imagine numerous figures at Cricket Australia hoping the Test team can be that competitive against South Africa this week. The last man out at the Gabba, Chadd Sayers, wandered through the arrivals hall in an Australia team polo Ferguson had donned only a few days before. Though he had every reason to be upset, even bitter about his treatment, Ferguson put on a commendably brave face, befitting the even temperament of a man who has retained his perspective and hunger to perform even in the face of two knee reconstructions.Asked whether he was confused by how he had been dumped so rapidly, Ferguson did not bite: “Just disappointed at this stage, as you are whenever you get left out of a team. It is disappointing anytime you get left out of a side, so it’s back to the drawing board. Make runs for South Australia, win games and hopefully fight my way back in.”It was certainly a really exciting week but a disappointing one. We had a really tough week on the field. I’m backing the Australian side to bounce back after this, it has been a tough few months but certainly they’ve got the quality in the side so I think they can bounce back.”The interim selection chairman Trevor Hohns had offered Ferguson a slight glimmer of hope for the future when informing him that his services were no longer required – there has been talk of taking him to India. “I spoke to Trevor the other day and he said the door is certainly not shut,” he said. “Get out there, make runs and certainly you’ve got an opportunity to get back in there if you do put them on the board.”The sheer turnover of Australian players was not lost on Josh Hazlewood, formerly a young bowler in the team yet now one of the more senior members. “I think with such a young group, it is exciting,” he said. “We get to build something together. I think there is not as much pressure because it’s everyone’s first game. We need to start from a point moving forward and hopefully this group gets an opportunity to do that, not only in one game but over a period of time.”Later in the afternoon, Renshaw trained at Adelaide Oval for the first time, and in practice occupied the first slip post that had until last week belonged to Adam Voges. All connected with Australian cricket, even Ferguson, will hope the revolving door stops here.

Wolves could sign "dominant" PL ace this summer

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with a Premier League star, as the transfer window opens to commence a busy summer at Molineux.

Julen Lopetegui will have to overcome financial hurdles due to the club’s FFP woes, however the Spaniard can remain hopeful in securing upgrades to his side despite potential constraints.

The latest link could provide Wolves with a firm upgrade in defence, as well as a replacement to a star linked to a move away.

What’s the latest on Harry Maguire to Wolves?

As reported by journalist Ben Jacobs (via The United Stand [41.03]), Wolves could emerge as a potential new club for Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire.

Jacobs claimed that the Midlands side could be a “dark horse” in the transfer saga regarding the 30-year-old’s future, with United keen to cash in.

Speaking to The United Stand, Jacobs noted that the potential sale of Max Kilman this summer could “open the possibility” of Wolves going for Maguire.

A FootballTransfers report from earlier this month stated that United would want a fee in the region of £35m for the defender.

What could Harry Maguire offer to Wolves?

Having been previously lauded as “dominant” by Red Devils boss Erik Ten Hag, Maguire has the capabilities to be one of the league’s top centre-backs as we have seen previously in his career.

At Old Trafford, the Englishman has hit a patch of stagnancy and is seemingly unable to escape a vicious cycle of poor performances and low confidence on the pitch.

On his day, the 30-year-old can pose as an assured and “dictating” figure at the heart of defence, as praised by Ten Hag this season.

The introduction of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane all but ended Maguire’s stay as one of United’s first-choice central defenders, and could now seek a new adventure away from Manchester to reinvent his career.

Wolves could be a perfect fit for the Englishman, particularly if Kilman is to depart amidst reports linking the centre-back to Tottenham Hotspur, with the United captain a shout for a strong, reliable and vastly experienced replacement.

Wolves centre-back Max Kilman.

The two are similar in their abilities at the back and are compared to each other based on statistics gathered over the past year via FBref.

The 6 foot 4 commander provides better aerial coverage than Kilman, averaging 3.01 aerials won per 90 to the Wolves ace’s 2.34 as well as making an average of 1.03 tackles to his 0.98 per 90, showing that he could fill the gap potentially left by the Spurs target at Molineux.

Despite making just eight starts in the league this season, Maguire has maintained an impressive average rate of passing with percentages higher than Kilman, as per Sofascore.

The £200k-per-week England international has maintained an average passing accuracy of 85% per game, with a stellar 94% accuracy rate of passes in his own half, with the 26-year-old averaging 83% per game and 90% accuracy in his own half.

Lopetegui could capture the signature of an established Premier League defender, as well as a centre-back experienced at international level with 55 caps for his country, proving that he is a trusted option in defence.

With his future still uncertain at Old Trafford, only time will tell if the United captain opts for a move away from the Red Devils.

Tamim leads Chittagong to fifth consecutive win

The win took Chittagong Vikings to 12 points, tied with Dhaka Dynamites and Khulna Titans

Tamim Iqbal withstood Khulna Titans’ efficient bowling attack to guide Chittagong Vikings to their fifth win in a row. The Chittagong captain was unbeaten on 66 off 59 balls which included eight fours and one six.The five-wicket win, with eight balls to spare, put them on 12 points, level with Dhaka Dynamites and Khulna Titans.Chittagong had suffered a top-order collapse after Chris Gayle fell in the fifth over. Anamul Haque and Shoaib Malik were run out before Zakir Hasan was stumped in the 11th over, thus reducing Chittagong to 64 for 4, after being comfortably placed at 39 for no loss in the fifth over.Tamim and Jahurul Islam stopped the rot with a 37-run fifth-wicket stand before the latter gave short midwicket a simple catch after making 22. He left when Chittagong needed 31 off the last four overs. Jahurul fell but soon Tamim reached his fourth fifty in this season’s BPL.Tamim survived on 24 when Shuvagata Hom dropped him at mid-off after a miscommunication with Alok Kapali, who was running in from cover. Shuvagata also dropped a chance, offered by Mohammad Nabi on one, in the 18th over, running in from long off.Nabi finished the chase with two consecutive fours in the penultimate over, ending up on 17 not out off eight balls. But it was chiefly Chittagong’s bowlers who, for the third consecutive game, gave them a strong platform. This time it was Imran Khan and Taskin Ahmed who were among the wickets, with support from Nabi, Subashis Roy and Saqlain Sajib.Imran removed the in-form Riki Wessels at the start and the dangerous Kevon Cooper in the slog overs, apart from his direct hit that dismissed Ariful Haque. Taskin took the big wicket of Mahmudullah – who top scored with 42 – and Nicholas Pooran in the final over.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s penalty miss against Scotland has Twitter going wild

Twitter has reacted in brutal fashion to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s penalty miss on Tuesday night against Scotland as he fired the ball well over the bar.

What happened in the game between Scotland and Georgia?

Scotland made it four wins from four in their quest to qualify for the 2024 European Championships on Tuesday, as they beat Georgia 2-0 at Hampden Park.

Goals from Callum McGregor and Manchester United’s Scott McTominay sealed the win for Steve Clarke’s side, but Napoli’s Kvaratskhelia had a glorious opportunity to pull one back for the visitors after they were awarded a penalty in the 93rd minute.

Much had been made about the 22-year-old’s influence on the game and his threat, but after a pretty poor performance, things only got worse for the winger as he fired the spot kick well over the crossbar.

As you can imagine, those on social media had a field day with the miss. After all, the Napoli star – who netted 12 league goals and claimed 13 assists on the way to a Serie A title – was far from his best on the night and fans online made that clear.

Indeed, some of the responses on Twitter to the awful penalty were ruthless. Here are some of the best…

A couple of users compared the miss to Harry Kane’s penalty for England against France in the World Cup last year…

One fan even claimed Kvaratskhelia couldn’t perform away from Napoli teammate Victor Osimhen…

A couple of Scottish fans weren’t impressed with the winger after seeing him in the flesh for the first time…
