Liverpool To Hold Meeting Over £100m-Rated Attacker

Liverpool may have a new striker in mind this summer, with journalist Sacha Tavolieri reporting that the Reds are set to have a meeting with Victor Osimhen's representatives next week.

How many goals did Victor Osimhen score last season?

The current Napoli striker has been in scintillating form over the course of the last campaign, helping fire his side to Serie A glory. It was the first title that the player has won since his move to Italy and he had a large part to play in that victory too.

With just 30 starts to his name in the league, the attacker managed to hit the back of the net a whopping 26 times, with four assists along the way to boot. It means that Osimhen averaged 1.05 goals or assists per 90 – meaning that every time he played a game, he was guaranteed to do one or the other.

When you compare him to others in his position amongst the Men's 'Top Five' big leagues in Europe too, he stands out as arguably one of the most clinical finishers around right now. His 0.87 non-penalty goal rate, for example, puts him in the top one percent in that category, whilst his overall non-penalty xG and xAG rate of 0.80 puts him in the top six percent in that category too.

It means that he possesses one of the best abilities to hit the back of the net in Europe and is also one of the best options for setting up teammates too, and he could soon be on his way to Anfield.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

Are Liverpool interested in Victor Osimhen?

It's no wonder then, that there has been interest in his services. A recent report suggests that Premier League side Chelsea were still considering a deal for the player but that they may have to stump up £100m or more to do business for the player.

Now, according to an update from Tavolieri, there are actually three teams booked in to speak to Osimhen's entourage next week and one of the newest emerging teams who have planned talks is Liverpool.

It states that the Reds, and by extension new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke, are set to speak about the player next week and that the "intentions" of the side will be "defined." Chelsea and Man United are also holding meetings about the striker.

The player has had an excellent 2022/23 season, when you consider both his stats and the way that he has impressed onlookers. Football journalist Josh Bunting for example has called Osimhen "lethal" based on his performances and goalscoring this season and it shows how prolific the attacker has been in front of goal.

If Liverpool do indeed have plans to bring in fresh forward options, then they could do a lot worse than the Napoli player.

Ireland batsman Andy Balbirnie and allrounder Stuart Thompson have been ruled out of the Desert T20 Challenge in the UAE after sustaining injuries at Ireland’s final training session on the eve of the tournament.Balbirnie suffered a strained glute muscle and will be out of action for one to two weeks, according to Ireland team manager Chris Siddell, while Thompson strained ligaments in his right ankle when he landed awkwardly on the thick boundary rope at Sheikh Zayed Stadium during a catching and six-saving drill. Thompson was seen on crutches wearing a cast after Ireland’s five-wicket loss to Afghanistan on Saturday and is expected to be out of action for at least a month.”It was just devastating for them for the hard work that they’ve put in to recover from their various illnesses and injuries,” Ireland coach John Bracewell after the Afghanistan loss. Balbirnie had been out for most of 2016 after hip surgery – which contributed to the loss of his Middlesex contract – while Thompson was attempting to make his Ireland return in this tournament after taking indefinite leave in June to get treatment for performance anxiety.Stuart Poynter and Lorcan Tucker are the two replacement players who were drafted into the Ireland squad for this tournament in place of Balbirnie and Thompson. Despite arriving at 2 am, about 17 hours before the first ball was bowled, Poynter was slotted in to open the Ireland batting and made 18 off 20 balls.Ireland captain William Porterfield revealed after the match that Thompson had been set to open the batting with Paul Stirling and the team felt inserting Poynter in that vacated slot was the best option to avoid further disrupting their batting plans. Tucker arrived in the country while the match was in progress, leaving Ireland 13 fit players to choose from against Afghanistan but should be available for their next match against Namibia on Tuesday.

James Maddison Deletes 2 Awkward Tweets Ahead Of Spurs Move

Social media can be a brutal place for footballers, who have to watch what they say over the years just in case an awkward post resurfaces at the worst possible time.If James Maddison could go back in time, for example, then we’re pretty sure he never would have posted his Tweet mocking Gareth Bale. The Leicester City midfielder is reportedly set to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, making the posts fairly awkward reading. It’s not exactly the best introduction to the fans, to say the least.

What’s the latest on James Maddison and Tottenham Hotspur?

According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are finally set to get their man, with Maddison’s medical to be scheduled soon ahead of a transfer worth £40m, plus potential add-ons.

The England international is on course to become new manager Ange Postecoglou’s second signing in North London following the arrival of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Serie A side Empoli.

The Maddison deal will be the one to really dominate the headlines, though, given his place in England’s squad and his status as a Premier League proven player.

Even in a struggling Leicester City side last season, the midfielder was involved in 19 Premier League goals, netting 10 and assisting nine.

With Harry Kane around to potentially assist next season too, should the move reach the expected completion, Maddison’s creative numbers will only go up. At Leicester in the last campaign, he had Kelechi Iheanacho and an ageing Jamie Vardy to choose from – neither of which found the back of the net on enough occasions (with 14 goals between them in all competitions).

Adding Maddison should pay off for Spurs, who will be looking to make a return to European football next season after finishing eighth and, therefore, missing out last season.

Why did James Maddison delete his Spurs Tweets?

What’s the worst way to introduce yourself to your new fans? We’d say criticising a club legend in favour of showing your support for the biggest rival’s midfielder is up there.

That’s exactly what Maddison has done here, too, with his old Tweets resurfacing showing more love for Arsenal than Spurs.

The midfielder said in 2012: “I hate Gareth Bale with a passion, calm down you monkey, [Jack] Wilshere is 10x better than you chimpanzee.”

He didn’t stop there, either, Tweeting in 2013: “Hope Luis Suarez destroys Tottenham today, don’t like Spurs! Especially that monkey that everyone’s on about!”

Somehow, we have a feeling that Maddison will have some apologising to do in his first Spurs interview…

At least they have since been removed from the England international’s account, as reported by the Daily Mail.

'I don't believe this is a historic Test' – Mushfiqur Rahim

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has brushed aside suggestions that the one-off Test has historic relevance, saying that their focus is on putting up a strong performance against a good team instead

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has brushed aside the portrayal of their maiden Test in India next week as a “historic” one, saying that he feels it is more important to treat the game as an opportunity to show Bangladesh’s measure in world cricket. He also hopes that a good performance in the one-off game will prompt the BCCI to invite them frequently. The team leaves Dhaka on February 2, to play a two-day practice match against India A and the Test in Hyderabad, which will be Bangladesh’s first in India since gaining ICC Full Member status in 2000. Interestingly, it was the BCCI’s push that was vital in their ascent from Associate Member, and India played against them in their inaugural Test on November 10, 2000. India toured Bangladesh four more times to play Tests thereafter.”I’m a little surprised, I don’t believe that this is a historic Test,” Mushfiqur said. “Take for example when we play against Zimbabwe. The pressure is more because if we lose against them then there is nothing more shameful than that. I will say that it is better that we are going there now and not five years ago.”We want to tell world cricket what we can do in India. I don’t think about how many years later we are going to play in India. We want to play in such a way that India invites again and again. This to me is just another Test match.”Mushfiqur, who has returned to the Test squad after missing Bangladesh’s last game in New Zealand due to a finger injury, said that he hopes the team puts together a collective performance. Bangladesh lost both Tests in New Zealand but gave the home side some tough sessions.”I hope that the recent performers will hold on to their form and put together a team performance. And to those who haven’t done well in the recent past, you have a chance to give a good account of yourself.”A team effort will give us a good result. They have a strong squad, and are always really good in their home conditions. We want to do well against them over five days, and not just two or three days,” he said.Mushfiqur said Bangladesh’s squad is balanced, with four pace bowlers and three specialist spinners and depth in the batting department. The return of Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur himself means that Bangladesh have their full batting strength back. Soumya Sarkar and Imrul are likely to be in competition for the role of Tamim Iqbal’s opening partner, while Mahmudullah, Shakib Al Hasan and Sabbir Rahman will be expected to make runs in the middle order.”No matter what conditions they offer, we have a balanced side. We have enough pacers and spinners and depth in batting.”I think our batsmen will have a challenge in their hands against their world-class attack. As a bowling unit we are inexperienced, but one or two bowlers did do well in New Zealand. If we can perform as a team we can do well against any other good team.”

Were horrified when Smith looked up for DRS – Saker

Australia’s assistant coach David Saker has said that they were horrified when captain Steven Smith looked up to the dressing room for DRS advice during the Bengaluru Test, and said suggestions that the communication was systematically used are absurd

Brydon Coverdale09-Mar-2017Australia’s coaching staff was “horrified” when captain Steven Smith looked to the dressing room for advice on a review during the Bengaluru Test, assistant coach David Saker has said. Saker also described as “absurd” suggestions that Australia systematically used such forbidden communication between on-field and off-field personnel when deciding on whether to ask for reviews. After the heated final day in Bengaluru, India’s captain Virat Kohli claimed that he had seen Australia’s players look to the dressing room for review advice on two occasions earlier in the match, and was quick to object when Smith did so while batting. Smith later owned up to his mistake, calling it a “brain fade”, and the ICC has since confirmed that no sanctions would arise from the Test.Australia’s integrity has been vigorously defended by coach Darren Lehmann and Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland, while India spinner R Ashwin compared the Smith incident to something out of “an Under-10 game”, saying it was “completely unheard of”. But if the Smith incident surprised the Indians, Saker said it was equally jarring to the Australians.”It’s pretty much absurd,” Saker said of suggestions that Australia used such a communication system. “I think when actually Steven Smith did look up, we were more horrified than anyone else because we had never seen that before. We haven’t got any elaborate sign system, and when he did do that, it was quite a surprise to us. But that’s never happened to me anywhere in my time in cricket.”After the match, Smith said he had consulted his batting partner Peter Handscomb when given out lbw, and Handscomb had suggested Smith look to the dressing room for advice. Smith said that he did so was “a brain fade”, while Handscomb has since said that his own relative inexperience in using the DRS meant he had not known his suggestion to Smith was against the rules.”It’s still new in my international career, so I haven’t had a lot to do with the DRS and I’m now a lot more familiar with it,” Handscomb said. “Just completely unaware that you couldn’t do that. But now I know – I’ve been well and truly informed and just looking forward to moving on from this.”Although Kohli did not use the word “cheat” in his post-match press conference, the term has been used in the media following on from Kohli’s accusations. Saker said that while it hurt the Australians to be described in such a way – “you should have to back up what you say,” he said – they would aim to brush off the issue and focus on the third Test in Ranchi.”It’s really offensive,” Saker said. “Probably the worst thing you can be called is cheats. That’s an offensive thing and we have never done something like that and never will. We will rub it off, get on to Ranchi, and try and win there.”However, Saker said that while he was unaware of any team using signals from the dressing room to indicate whether a player should ask for a review, he conceded that the length of time allowed – players have 15 seconds from the ball becoming dead in which they are permitted to ask for a review – meant that it was not implausible.”I think the ICC might be looking at something, maybe shortening the time the captains are given,” Saker said. “Because there is a lot of time, that could actually happen if you wanted to do it. I’ve never seen it and I’ve never heard anybody ever talk about it until yesterday, so as I said, it’s nothing that we’ve ever done and I’ve never heard of.”The DRS controversy aside, the second Test was a disappointing one for Australia after they took a 1-0 series lead in Pune. They had also held the advantage after the first day in Bengaluru. Saker said that while the pitch made batting difficult, it had at least made for a fascinating Test match – though one that was difficult for Australia’s coaching staff to watch towards the end.”It was horrible being a coach,” he said. “I can only imagine how hard it was for the players. That was a seriously tense game and we can talk about the wicket probably wasn’t up to Test standard. But it made for a fantastic game of Test cricket, so you can argue it was up to Test standards.”

Chelsea Enter Formal Talks To Sign Brighton’s Moises Caicedo

Chelsea are officially "in talks" with Brighton over the signing of Moises Caicedo this summer, according to an update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Would Moises Caicedo be a good signing for Chelsea?

The Blues could well have a busy time of things in the coming weeks, with new signings required to boost their squad after a dreadful 2022/23 season in the Premier League. Arrivals have already made their way to Stamford Bridge, including attacking star Nicolas Jackson and pre-agreed signing Christopher Nkunku, but there is no doubt that midfield reinforcements are essential before the new campaign gets underway next month.

The player who has arguably been linked with a move to Chelsea more than anyone is Caicedo, who is fresh off the back of a highly impressive season in a Brighton shirt. A bundle of energy and quality in the middle of the park, the 21-year-old completed 88.8% of his passes in the league, as well as averaging 2.7 tackles per match and winning one aerial duel per game, outlining his many attributes as a player.

In many ways, he is precisely what the Blues need this summer, especially with N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic's time at the club coming to an end, and the question now is whether they can get a deal over the line sooner rather than later

Brighton are clearly holding firm, demanding huge money for arguably their most prized asset, but another update has now emerged regarding his future.

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.

What's the latest on Moises Caicedo to Chelsea?

According to Romano for Caught Offside, Chelsea are "in talks" with Brighton over a summer transfer, as they look to seal a significant piece of business, engaging in "club to club" talks. He also said in a YouTube video that the midfielder is their "priority" (via Football 365).

At this point, it would certainly be a surprise if the Ecuador international chose a different club over the Blues in the summer window, with their interest so strong at this point and rivals bringing in other options, from Alexis Mac Allister joining Liverpool to Declan Rice moving to Arsenal.

The one biggest issue is the idea of Brighton being stubborn and only accepting a monumental bid for Caicedo, however, especially having already lost another key man in Mac Allister, meaning they could suddenly be significantly weakened before the beginning of next season.

He is someone who Chelsea should be willing to break the bank for, given his long-term potential and the fact he is already such a proven Premier League player, excelling across 45 appearances in the competition. His ability to cover ground, bite into tackles and keep possession can all benefit Mauricio Pochettino ahead of his first season as manager, and he could dovetail beautifully with Enzo Fernandez in the middle of the park.

Caicedo is also a versatile footballer who can slot into a right-back role, when required – he played there three times for Brighton in 2022/23, including in the memorable 3-0 victory away to title challengers Arsenal – which is an extra weapon in his armoury.

Brighton will surely give in at some point, given the money being discussed, but it has become increasingly clear there the Seagulls will not be going away without a fight.

West Ham to "very quickly" speed things up for "unbelievable" star

West Ham still have a good chance of signing Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes this summer, according to a key update from transfer expert Dean Jones.

Is Harvey Barnes off to West Ham this summer?

The Hammers are hopefully in the process of having an excellent summer in the transfer market, with last season a disappointing one in the Premier League, even though UEFA Europa Conference League glory was so memorable secured.

It is essential that a number of new faces arrive, in order to freshen up the squad, and the vast amount of money received through the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal will surely generate more funds for incomings.

One player who has been linked with a move to West Ham a number of times in recent months is Barnes, who looks almost certain to leave Leicester sooner rather than later, following their relegation to the Championship back in May. The £40,000-a-week winger scored 13 times for the Foxes in the league in 2022/23, despite their struggles as a team, and it would be a big surprise if he wasn't representing a top-flight team next term.

Now, a new update has emerged regarding the Englishman's current situation, as West Ham look to get a significant piece of business over the line.

What's the latest on Harvey Barnes to West Ham?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones claimed that there is still plenty of work to do regarding West Ham's pursuit of Barnes, but generally spoke positively about the moving coming to fruition:

"I think very quickly we'll start to see that move forward very quickly in terms of finding out how much he will cost and whether he's willing to commit to a move to a club like West Ham, or whether he's looking to keep his options open for a little bit longer."

Barnes really could be such an ideal signing for West Ham ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, with the one-time capped England international ticking so many boxes as an addition.

At 25, he is at a real sweet spot in his career, possessing plenty of experience but also have so many years ahead of him, and he has now racked up 35 goals and 25 assists in the Premier League, highlighting the productivity he could bring in the final third at the London Stadium.

Barnes' pace and directness have arguably been lacking at West Ham of late, and he would represent a different type of player than someone like Said Benrahma, for example, offering more runs in behind and stretching opponents in the process.

The Leicester star has been hailed as "unbelievable" by iconic Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, which is no mean feat, and if the Hammers can beat other clubs to his signature, it would feel like a statement signing for them before the campaign gets underway.

Newcastle are believed to be right in the mix, though, and their guarantee of Champions League football could understandably turn Barnes' head, but West Ham must do all they can to get their man this summer, ensuring he is part of a major squad build in the process.
