Cosgrove sustains Leicestershire prospects

Leicestershire ensured they will go into their final group match, against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, knowing that a win will see them qualify for the quarter-finals

Leicestershire ensured they will go into their final group match, against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, knowing that a win will see them qualify for the quarter-finals.The Foxes’ four wicket win over the Falcons means that Derbyshire must also win their final match, at home to Worcestershire, to be certain of going through to the knockout stages for the first times since 2005 – although they will also qualify if Leicestershire are beaten by Notts.”We’re over the moon. We knew we would probably have to win our last four games to qualify, and we’ve still got a chance of doing that – it’s not how you start a competition, it’s how you finish it that counts,” Leicestershire head coach, Pierre de Bruyn, said.”We were very good in the field tonight, and Aadil Ali isn’t really a part-time bowler, he’s worked really hard on his offspin over the last year. Then Mark Cosgrove was outstanding, you need a calm head from a senior player in these sort of circumstances, and he controlled our innings.”We know what we’re up against at Notts, but we have momentum, and they will know we are a dangerous side. It’s like a mini quarter-final for us.”Put in on a slightly slow pitch, Derbyshire struggled from the start, scoring just 34 from the six-over Powerplay, and losing their three leading run-getters in reaching just 46. First to go was Billy Godleman, the left-hander losing his leg stump to Gavin Griffiths bowling around the wicket, and Luis Reece quickly followed, caught and bowled off a leading edge by Ali.The key wicket, however, was that of Wayne Madsen, who came into the match having hit 457 runs in the competition this season, but had scored only 10 when he reverse-swept Ali straight into the hands of Callum Parkinson at backward point. With wickets falling at the other end, opener Matt Critchley set his stall out to bat through, and did so successfully, going to a run-a-ball 50 with a six, and finishing on 72 off 60 balls as the Falcons hit 44 from the last four overs of their innings to give their bowlers something to bowl at.Leicestershire’s reply was a nervous one, though it should not have been after they were given their customary flying start by Luke Ronchi. The former New Zealand international lost opening partner Cameron Delport to a fine diving catch by Madsen at backward point, but had hit 32 off 14 balls before he holed out to Alex Hughes at mid-on off Madsen.Colin Ackermann was run out after a fine piece of fielding by Matt Henry, but Cosgrove’s experience was vital as the Australian shepherded the Foxes home, reaching his 50 off 40 balls, and winning the match in the penultimate over with a four over midwicket.Derbyshire captain Daryn Smit said: “It was a strange surface, it looked good, but it didn’t really come on to the bat, and perhaps we should have played a little differently. The batters have done in week in week out this season, but they were bound to have a slip-up eventually. Critch was brilliant but we knew we were 20 runs shy and we’d have to be unbelievable in the field the restrict them. We weren’t far off but one good innings by Cosgrove got them over the line.”We kept fighting though, and showed a lot of character. We have to win tomorrow to be sure of going through, it’s in our hands and we have to go out and do it in front of a good crowd.”

Leeds: Farke Can Land Kristensen Upgrade By Signing 5 ft 11 Brute

Leeds United enjoyed a strong penultimate pre-season clash as Daniel Farke's side beat Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest 2-0 on Thursday night.

Who scored for Leeds against Nottingham Forest?

Winger Ian Poveda and centre-forward Patrick Bamford got themselves on the scoresheet for the Whites at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium.

Along with the goals, the German head coach will surely have been pleased with a clean sheet for his team as they showed defensive resilience ahead of the start of the 2023/24 Championship season next month.

Leeds United News writer Danny Bloomer picked out trialist Sam Byram as one of the standout performers for the club at left-back on the night as he rewarded the ex-Norwich Ctiy man with a rating of 7/10.

It has been a busy summer of outward business for Farke as a host of first-team players have made their way out of the door; including right-back Rasmus Kristensen, who has signed for Serie A giants Roma on loan until the end of the season.

Who could replace Rasmus Kristensen at Leeds?

The Whites boss could land a dream replacement for the Denmark international by offering Byram a permanent contract following his trial period, as the English brute has the potential to be an upgrade on him.

Firstly, the ex-Canaries titan would offer far more versatility across the backline. Kristensen has never played more than eight matches outside of right-back or right-midfield in his career.

Leeds defender Rasmus Kristensen.

Whereas, the 29-year-old free-agent has featured in 26 or more matches as a right-back, left-back, and right-midfielder, whilst he also played six times as a centre-back over the last two seasons.

Byram caught the eye in his 15 Championship appearances for the Canaries last season as he averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.85.

The experienced defender won 4.8 duels per match and boasted an impressive success rate of 59%, which shows that he was able to dominate opposition forwards.

Kristensen, on the other hand, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.70 across 26 Premier League outings for Leeds, which placed him 11th within the squad.

The 26-year-old won 54% of his battles and came out on top in 4.2 of them per game, which shows that the now-Roma battler was not as efficient as the English gem was in his defensive work.

This suggests that the potential is there for Byram to be an upgrade on the former RB Salzburg warrior as a pure defender, due to his strength in individual duels and average performance level – albeit in different leagues.

In possession, the former Yellows ace created 0.5 chances per clash last season in comparison to Kristensen's 0.3 for the Whites, which shows that neither of them are particularly creative as nine Leeds players produced more key passes per game last term.

Farke recently hailed Byram as a "top-class" character and their pre-existing relationship, as the 5 foot 11 dynamo played 20 matches for the German tactician at Carrow Road, could allow the free agent to slot straight into the team as he already knows what the manager wants from him as a left-back or right-back.

Therefore, the ex-Whites academy prospect could be the dream replacement for Kristensen due to the quality and versatility he could provide on the pitch.

Although there are question marks over his fitness, as the strong enforcer never played more than 17 league games in a single season for Norwich, bringing him in on a free is a worthwhile gamble for the club to make.

Tottenham Offered Chance To Land Van Dijk 2.0 In £26m Titan

Tottenham Hotspur have potentially been offered the chance to sign Bayern Munich defender, Benjamin Pavard, with the Frenchman tipped to be included as part of a deal that would see Harry Kane head in the other direction.

How much is Pavard worth?

As per 90min, the Bundesliga side are keen to step their interest in the Spurs talisman by arranging a meeting with chairman Daniel Levy, with Thomas Tuchel's side having already seen two bids for the 29-year-old knocked back so far this summer.

The piece reveals that the German giants have 'floated the idea' of including a member of their first-team squad as part of their next bid to sign the England skipper, with Pavard among those who could be 'on the table'.

The belief is that the World Cup winner – who has reportedly been valued at €30m (£26m) with just a year left on his current contract – may be 'attached' to what would prove to be a club-record offer from Bayern of around £86m.

Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard.

The report does go on to note that 'there is little to suggest that this will entice Tottenham', despite the fact that the north Londoners are yet to sign a new centre-back – amid ongoing talks with Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven.

How good is Benjamin Pavard?

As the reported noted, Tottenham man not initially be enticed by the idea of signing the 27-year-old, although the versatile ace – who can also feature at right-back – could well emerge as a real leader at N17 if he is to join Ange Postecoglou's ranks.

Previously described as "underrated" by Tuchel – while also being hailed as "outstanding" by former Bayern president Uli Hoeneß – the £83k-per-week machine could prove to be a wise investment for Levy and co, particularly amid his apparent statistical similarity to Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, according to Opta's Player Radars.

That likeness between the pair is illustrated by just how comfortable the two men are when playing out from the back, with Pavard ranking among the very best in Europe for touches made as a sign of his willingness to get on the ball, while Van Dijk ranks in the top 2% in that regard.

In a defensive sense, the duo are both able to offer a real physical presence at the heart of the backline and rarely give opposition forwards a moment's peace, with the Anfield icon ranking in the top 10% for aerial duels won, while Pavard ranks in the top 24% for that same metric.

That ability to sense danger can also be seen in the fact that the former Stuttgart titan ranks in the top 26% with regard to possession won, while Van Dijk is only just behind as he ranks in the top 36%.

To be likened to the influential Dutchman is high praise indeed, with the 32-year-old having been a real driving force for the Merseyside outfit over recent years, with ex-Liverpool man Jamie Carragher stating earlier this year that no centre-back "has ever had" such an "impact" on a team in the Premier League era.

With Pavard only slightly older than Van Dijk was when he joined the Reds from Southampton back in January 2018 – having been 26 at the time – perhaps the Frenchman can have a similar 'impact' for Spurs over the coming years.

'I don't know what the strength of West Indies cricket is'

Former West Indies fast bowler Andy Roberts has questioned the fitness of the current pace attack on the eve of the first Test against England at Edgbaston

Melinda Farrell17-Aug-2017Former West Indies fast bowler Andy Roberts has questioned the fitness of the current pace attack on the eve of the first Test against England at Edgbaston.Roberts was speaking in Birmingham at Wicketz, a children’s clinic hosted by the Lord’s Taverners, ahead of the day-night Test alongside fellow West Indies greats Viv Richards, Curtly Ambrose and Richie Richardson. While all four former players acknowledged there were significant weaknesses in the side, Roberts handed out the harshest assessment of bowlers.”To be honest I don’t know what is the strength of West Indies cricket today because we don’t bat too well and at times it depends on the fitness of the fast bowlers,” Roberts told ESPNcricinfo. “It seems as though some of them are prone to breaking down.”I’m hoping that they are all at full strength and that they’ll all be able to last the full five days. If they do they may have a chance but you see it’s very difficult if you do go in with four bowlers and you have problems with one because the overall team is not as strong as I would like to see.”Roberts was critical of the amount of time players spend in the gym and suggested they should spend more time in the nets. But he singled out 20-year-old Alzarri Joseph as the bowler who could thrive in English conditions.”He’s young, I think he’s probably the fittest of the lot in terms of not breaking down and he also swings the ball a bit which is not common,” Roberts said. “Jason Holder, Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel are more seamers. They seem to hit the deck a lot harder and try to get legcutters and offcutters whereas Alzarri Joseph, especially early in the innings, will try to swing the ball and that’s very important here in England. So I won’t be surprised early on, if he takes the new ball, if he takes one or two early wickets.”In contrast, former West Indies bowling coach Ambrose felt the current crop of bowlers were holding their own in Tests, but he called on the batsmen to push harder for competitive – and defendable – totals.”I’m not saying they don’t have batsmen who can score runs, they do,” Ambrose said. “But you can’t keep scoring 180, 200, 220 in Test cricket and expect to win too many games.”One of the batsman who has impressed Richardson, the former team manager, is Shai Hope. Although Hope averages just 19.57 in ten Tests to date, Richardson believes his temperament marks him out as a batsman who can develop into a mature player.”His attitude towards batting, towards the game, he’s always willing to learn,” Richardson said. “He listens and you can see he would make changes to his game.”If he got out a particular way he would go into the nets and try to work on his weaknesses and I like that about him. He’s always willing to learn and always asking questions, he’s got a desire to work hard and to achieve great things.”Richards, perhaps typically, called on the West Indies batsmen to show no fear and, while acknowledging England are heavy favourites going into the series, believed the pink ball could be something of a leveler in the opening match.”England is one of the best places for you to play the game itself and one’s got to look at it that way,” Richards said. “All the players from the West Indies who have toured this part of the world would have gone back from England being a much better player. I’m hoping the guys do understand that, the batters themselves understand that.”There are no demons playing in this country. If you can play and you back yourself enough, you’re going to have success and that’s what it’s all about. Knowing your requirements, knowing your limits, the things you can get done and the things that you cannot get done.”Don’t worry about them talking about the seam and the swing and all that sort of stuff, it can be countered. If you’re good enough.”

United Interested In £39m "Complete" Defender

Manchester United are "keeping an eye" on Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo with the idea that he would be "one of the priority options" should Harry Maguire be sold, claims transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

Is Jean-Clair Todibo joining Manchester United?

By most metrics, the transfer window has been a roaring success for United so far this summer.

It's hard to argue that the additions of Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund haven't dramatically improved Erik ten Hag's starting eleven and general squad depth compared to last year. And to get these stars through the door a week before the season kicks off is another massive achievement for the club.

However, the Red Devils aren't resting on their laurels just yet, as with over three weeks to go before the window slams shut, a lot more work can be done, especially if they sell any of their players.

Read the latest Manchester United transfer news HERE…

With England international Maguire stripped of the club captaincy in July and interest from clubs like West Ham United, the three-time European champions have reportedly targeted Nice defender Todibo as the perfect replacement for the former Foxes star, should he be sold.

Jean-Clair Todibo

According to transfers expert Fabrizio Romano the young Frenchman would likely cost at least €45m (£39m), but should they receive their asking price of £35m for Maguire, that shouldn't be too high a hurdle to jump.

Romano explained the situation on his YouTube channel, saying:

"Man United are keeping an eye on the situation of Todibo, and they had contacts because they think that Todibo could be one of the priority options in case Maguire leaves the club.

"At the moment for Maguire the situation remains quiet because the only official bid was from West Ham but £20m [is] not enough for Man United to say yes. But in case the Maguire situation changes, Todibo is one of the options they are monitoring."

How good is Jean-Clair Todibo?

The 23-year-old had a great season for Nice last year and has been constantly useful for the side since joining in 2020 after a poor stint at Barcelona.

According to WhoScored, the Cayenne-born "complete package", as described by football scout Jacek Kulig made 34 appearances for Le Gym last year, maintaining a passing accuracy of 88.9%, winning 1.1 aerial duals a game, earning one Man-of-the-Match award and averaging a match rating of 6.79.

His underlying numbers are also brilliant, with his passing ability standing out in particular, suggesting that he could benefit a side like United, who want to pass out from the back more often.

Jean-Clair Todibo for Nice

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, Todibo sits in the top 5% for successful take-ons, the top 8% for tackles, the top 12% for attempted passes, and progressive passes and the top 20% for pass completion, all per 90.

He clearly impressed Germany legend Lothar Matthaus with his performances when he was still a Barcelona player, as the former Germany star described him as "the best centre back I've seen in a long time."

Ultimately, with Maguire's time at the club looking like it has come to an end, selling him and using the proceeds to sign a young and exciting defender like Todibo seems like the kind of move that could pay off big time in seasons to come.

Ashwin's magic quickens Worcestershire promotion hunt

Forest Could Sign "Outstanding" £4m-rated Rio Ferdinand Heir

Nottingham Forest are set to continue their summer of spending, as Steve Cooper seeks to finally sort out his squad after a year of vast overhaul.

Who are Nottingham Forest signing this summer?

This window has not been half as hectic as the same one exactly a year ago, but some key additions have still been made regardless.

Anthony Elanga and Ola Aina are set to immediately battle for first-team spots, whilst the activated buy clause for Chris Wood will provide ample backup for Taiwo Awoyini.

However, a fresh report has emerged that suggests they are set to align with the former acquisitions, maintaining a youth focus by signing Andrew Omobamidele from Norwich City.

That is at least the suggestion made by TEAMtalk, who report their interest and the upcoming battle they are set to endure for his services, with a fee of more than £20m likely to be required.

Football Transfers value the youngster at just €5m (£4m).

Who is Andrew Omobamidele?

Despite being only 21 years old, the experience that the centre-back boasts goes far beyond his actual age.

He has made 52 appearances for the Canaries in both the Premier League and the Championship, even bursting into the Republic of Ireland national team too, where he has made six caps.

Such is his quality, Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig arguably offered him the ultimate praise by suggesting he resembles the legendary English defender Rio Ferdinand. This was due to a host of strengths, which he listed: “pace, tackling, athleticism, passing, heading, anticipation, positioning”.

Boasting a surprising turn of pace to match his 6 foot 3 frame, it is not just his physical assets that liken him to the six-time title winner – who was arguably 'one of the greatest ball-playing central defenders of his era', according to the Premier League's official website.

Omobamidele is equally as adept with his feet, as showcased by FBref. When compared to other centre-backs across Europe in the Men's next eight competitions, he ranks in the top 11% for passes attempted per 90, and the top 14% for progressive carries per 90.

He knows exactly how to use his immense stature to thrive, with a short stint in the top flight showcasing his potential to one day shine regularly at this level.

rio-ferdinand

Despite only making five appearances at the back end of the 2021/22 campaign, he maintained a 6.82 average match rating, bolstered by his 84% pass accuracy alongside 1.6 tackles one interception and 2.6 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

Arguably the fairer assessment of his skillset would have been in the Championship last season, where essentially replicated these figures across 34 appearances. Boasting another 6.82 average rating, his pass accuracy rose to 88% as well as his 1.2 tackles and 2.7 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

Teammate and defensive veteran Grant Hanley expects plenty in the future from his young understudy, and waxed lyrical to Norwich’s official website: “He’s been outstanding in the last couple of games – so composed as a young lad coming into the first team ready to take his opportunity. He deserves a lot of credit for that.”

Whilst he might not burst straight into Forest’s first team, in signing one for the future they could showcase their dramatic shift in transfer strategy from last year’s madness to this year’s methodical plan.

If he enjoys half as successful a career as Ferdinand, which the early stages of his career suggest he could well do, this would certainly mark a wild success.
