Chittagong Vikings picked themselves up from the bottom of the points table by beating Sylhet Sixers by 40 runs in their first game at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, the team’s home venue. Sikandar Raza’s superb hitting powered Chittagong to 211 for 5 – the highest total in this season of the BPL.Raza slammed six sixes and nine fours in his 45-ball 95. He shared partnerships of 73 for the fourth wicket with Stiaan van Zyl and 68 for the fifth wicket with Najibullah Zadran. All that after Luke Ronchi’s cameo at the top gave the hosts a flying start.Andre Fletcher threatened Chittagong for a large duration of the chase with a blistering 71, but Sylhet collapsed after his dismissal. They lost six wickets in less than four overs, slipping from 123 for 1 to 144 for 7 and eventually finishing on 171 for 8.Ronchi sets Chittagong upRonchi has been instrumental in giving Chittagong a quick start in almost every game, and today was no different. He started off with a six over square-leg in the first over, and went on to hit six fours as well in his 25-ball 41.But incoming batsmen Soumya Sarkar and Anamul Haque couldn’t quite match Ronchi as they fell for 1 and 3 respectively. By the time Ronchi was out in the eighth over, Chittagong were well-set for a big total.Raza and van Zyl consolidateBefore Raza started his 45-ball blitz of 85 to get on top of the Sylhet attack, Stiaan van Zyl struck Taijul Islam for a six over midwicket very early. Raza, who was dropped in the 10th over, got into the act when he and van Zyl struck Nasir for one six each in the next over.Raza then targeted Ghulam Mudassar and Abul Hasan for one six each – over extra cover and midwicket. Their 73-run partnership ended in the 14th over, but by then Chittagong were already on 138.Raza tees off with a six-barrageRaza and Najibullah kept the run-rate up in the last seven overs, but the sixes started to rain from the 18th over onwards when Raza slammed Hasan over cover and deep into the stands at midwicket. He then blasted Tim Bresnan over midwicket for his sixth six to move into the nineties, and his highest T20 score. With five balls remaining, Raza sliced Kamrul Islam Rabbi into the hands of deep point, falling five short of a deserved century.Fletcher keeps Sylhet in the huntDanushka Gunathilaka sounded out Sylhet’s intentions by hitting Sunzamul Islam for a straight six off the first ball of the chase. Fletcher took his cue and hammered Raza for two sixes in the next over – over extra cover and midwicket.Fletcher upped his game in the next over when he hammered four consecutive boundaries, three through the offside and one straight down the ground, off Subashis Roy. Gunathilaka’s dismissal in the fifth over hardly mattered as Fletcher and Babar Azam made a smooth transition in their hitting.Azam cracked Luis Reece for his first six over midwicket, before Fletcher hammered Tanbir Hayder straight for another six in the ninth over. He added another in the 14th over, a huge hit over midwicket off Taskin Ahmed.Sylhet slump in a heapTaskin, however, hit back when Raza took a great running catch from cover to remove the dangerous Fletcher for 71 in the 14th over. Van Zyl then took two wickets in the 15th. Soumya removed Hasan and Bresnan in the 16th over, and just like that, the required-run rate had hit astronomical heights. That proved too much for Sylhet to manage any sort of a recovery, and they finished well short of their target.

Everton: Dyche could sign "big talent" to replace Doucoure

Everton are once again struggling to pick up points in the Premier League, with zero goals and zero points tallied up in their first three fixtures so far.

Now, with just a few days left of the summer transfer window, it will be crucial to bring in reinforcements that could significantly improve the current situation at Goodison Park, with a fresh update emerging on a potential transfer target.

Will Everton sign anyone before the window shuts?

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Everton are one of many clubs interested in signing Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton.

Writing on his Patreon platform, Nixon claims that Brighton and Hove Albion, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been monitoring the youngster.

However, Everton are eager to secure his signature, despite strong competition from Crystal Palace who are also pushing forward with a move for Wharton before the transfer window closes on Friday.

Who is Adam Wharton?

Whilst the focus has been on building an improved attacking threat at Goodison Park this summer, there is no doubt that Sean Dyche will be looking for opportunities to strengthen every area of his squad to ensure quality is consistent throughout.

The Toffees have started their new campaign in the same concerning state they left off in last season and are currently rock bottom in the top-flight table following three consecutive defeats, so the remaining days of the summer window will be crucial.

adam-wharton-blackburn-premier-league-everton-transfers

As a result, the signing of Wharton could not only be a great opportunity to bring in the dream heir to succeed Abdoulaye Doucoure, but would provide Dyche with some quality depth in the centre of the pitch throughout the season ahead.

The 19-year-old is a product of the Blackburn Rovers academy and has risen through the ranks to become a key player for the Championship club, making his debut in the second tier in August 2022.

Over 18 Championship appearances last season, the midfield dynamo impressed a great deal, scoring two goals, registering one assist and tallying up an 84% pass completion rate, as well as winning 52% of his aerial and ground duels combined, as per SofaScore.

Not only that, Wharton is one of the hottest English youth prospects. Indeed, across the eight leagues most comparable to the Championship, he ranks in the top 25% of his positional peers per 90 minutes played for non-penalty goals, blocks, tackles, interceptions, assists and progressive passes, demonstrating his wide and versatile skill set both in his attacking and defensive presence in midfield.

Such metrics match up well when comparing him to the aforementioned Doucoure. He isn't quite the same level of tackler as Wharton but throughout Europe's top five leagues, he sits in the top 3% with regards to positionally similar players for non-penalty goals, the top 39% for assists, and the best 16% for blocks, to highlight a similar all-round package in the middle of the park.

Wharton also offers an invaluable asset to Everton due to his versatility to adapt to most midfield roles when needed, with experience in the attacking, central and defensive roles over his short career so far. Again, that stacks up well when compared to Doucoure.

The youngster has deservedly earned high praise for his development and breakthrough at Ewood Park, with his manager Jon Dahl Tomasson waxing lyrical about Wharton last season:

"He’s a big talent for the club and that was a big reason why I gave him a chance at a very young age, a player who had never been involved before."

With that being said, if Everton could seal a deal for Wharton over the dying days of the transfer window it would be a major addition for Dyche and a signing that will not only offer huge quality and potential to the squad, but provide a promising future for the midfield presence at Goodison Park.

Smith, Mitchell Marsh heap pain upon England

Mitchell Marsh scored his maiden Test hundred and Steven Smith batted through the day for a double as England were ground into the dirt at the WACA

The Report by Brydon Coverdale16-Dec-20172:23

Vaughan: Smith has the special skill and hunger of greatness

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIt would be hard to imagine a day of greater Australian dominance than this one. It was a day on which Steven Smith made his second Test double-century, Mitchell Marsh scored his maiden Test hundred, England claimed just a single wicket and Australia piled on 346 runs. A day that began with Australia trailing by 200 finished with them 146 runs in front, and with a realistic chance of pushing for victory – and the urn – over the next two days. Remind us why Australia would want to move Ashes Tests away from the WACA?But a caveat is necessary, for it was not a day that necessarily ended England’s campaign. The pitch remains good for batting – that is stating the obvious – and there is rain forecast over the next two days in Perth. It remains very possible that England will escape from this match with a draw, and as the holders of the Ashes, that would keep them alive in the series. Alive, but demoralised. They might have known that Smith could score a mountain of runs, but Mitchell Marsh eyeing off a Test double-century by stumps? They’d have been more likely to expect the Spanish Inquisition. This was a day that can best be illustrated by the numbers, and at the close of play, the numbers were these: Smith was on 229, Marsh was on 181, and Australia had 4 for 549. Hundreds were also piling up in England’s bowling analysis: Craig Overton, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali had all conceded centuries by the close of play, and if James Anderson – currently at 0 for 85 – joins them on the fourth day, it will be just the eighth time in Test history that a team has had five or more bowlers concede 100 in the same innings. Some more numbers: by stumps, the Smith-Marsh partnership was worth 301 runs, the most prolific partnership Smith has ever been involved in at Test level. And Marsh’s score was already the sixth-highest of all time by an Australian No.6. Along the way, Smith passed 1000 runs in a calendar year for the fourth consecutive year, joining Matthew Hayden as the only men to achieve this feat, and Smith has done so averaging 60-plus in every year. The day had started in vaguely reasonable style for England, when they claimed the wicket of Shaun Marsh, who edged Moeen to slip for 28. It was the only reason England had to celebrate all day. Reasons for optimism were rare: occasionally Smith edged, but his soft hands always ensured the ball dropped short of the slips, and an lbw review from England against Smith found that Anderson had over-stepped, although in any case the umpire’s on-field call of not-out would have been upheld by the ball tracking.Mitchell Marsh roars after hitting his maiden Test hundred•Getty Images

No matter what Joe Root tried, it failed. In the morning, Smith brought up the fastest century of his Test career, a 138-ball effort that showed just as much ability to read the circumstances as had his slowest Test hundred, scored at the Gabba earlier in this series. He continued to be strong when cover-driving, when walking across the stumps and whipping to leg, and frankly playing wherever he wanted to.Marsh was especially powerful driving straight down the ground and through the off side, and also found the gaps when cutting. He let out a roar after bringing up his home-town hundred in the final over before tea, with a pair of boundaries through point off Broad, the milestone coming from his 130th delivery. His efforts had continued a fine summer of selections from the Australian panel, who have found excellent contributions from Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine and now Mitchell Marsh, three selections that sparked much debate. And still the runs kept piling up. Late in the day, Smith moved past his previous highest Test score of 215, and had been at the crease for nearly 10 hours. He was just the fifth Australia captain to score an Ashes double-century, after Billy Murdoch, Don Bradman, Bob Simpson and Allan Border.Marsh by the close was eyeing off a double-century, a sentence which on its own tells all that need be told about this day. The result was that England were sunk, if not in the series, then at least in their hopes of winning this Test.

Nyeem Young’s 33-ball 55, aided by significant contributions from Bhaskar Yadram, Emmanuel Stewert and Kirstan Kallicharan, helped West Indies chase 279 as they beat Ireland by four wickets with 10 balls remaining in Lincoln.Batting first, Ireland’s Mark Donegan and captain Harry Tector held the top-order together, making scores of 38 and 69 respectively, but it was Neil Rock at No. 6, who steered Ireland towards a 270-plus score with 91 off 101 balls.West Indies started their chase with a substantial opening partnership of 75 between Yadram (52 off 48 balls) and Kimani Melius, before Morgan Topping removed the former in the 13th over. West Indies then slipped to 103 for 9 before Stewart and Kallicharan added 62 runs for the fourth wicket, the partnership broken by a run-out.When Kallicharan fell to Tector for 46 in the 39th over, West Indies still needed 85 to win. But Young made his way to the crease and finished the chase within the next 10 overs, slamming eight fours and a six during to his half-century.

Arsenal: Gunners Now Eyeing "Surprise" Late Defender Bid

A report from the English press has shared a "surprise" update on Arsenal and their possible bid to sign former Man City defender Eric Garcia.

Who will Arsenal sign next?

Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu Gaspar have orchestrated one of the Gunners' busiest summer transfer windows in recent memory, spending north of £200 million on four key signings.

Arsenal are showing real ambition to contend with last season's imperious treble-winners Man City, even spending a club-record £105 million to acquire England international star Declan Rice from West Ham.

Alongside Rice, Germany international Kai Havertz, versatile defender Jurrien Timber and sweeper keeper David Raya have also joined the north Londoners, but there's a major problem with one.

Timber sustained an ACL injury during Arsenal's opening day Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest a fortnight ago and could be out for as long as seven months, with Arteta previously suggesting they could take to the transfer market again in search of a replacement.

mikel-arteta-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-manchester-city-aymeric-laporte-timber-injury

“It is a huge blow. Especially for him after just joining the club. We recruited him with clear intentions and what he was bringing to the team was evident,” Arteta said recently.

“We have to assess now what the options are, what the best way is to get the best out of the players we have. As I said, my biggest challenge now is to get the best out of the players we have.

“I cannot control anything that is not here. And we are always open and we have to be open and react if something happens, not only with an injury but with the market as well – and that’s what we are doing.”

Garcia, who has found game time difficult to come by for Barcelona lately, is seen as a possible alternative to the sidelined Timber – according to recent reports.

The 22-year-old worked under Arteta when he was assistant coach at Man City under Pep Guardiola, and an update has come to light on his potential move to Arsenal.

eric-garcia

The Daily Star claim they're "weighing up a surprise late loan move" for Garcia, who City sold after just 19 league games. Arsenal actually attempted to sign the Spaniard on a free transfer two years ago, and it appears they're returning to the fold.

It is believed Garcia, for his part, would welcome a return to England.

How good is Eric Garcia?

The young six foot defender played predominantly in a makeshift defensive midfield role over his 32 appearances for Barca last season; highlighting a real versatility which may appeal to Arteta.

Xavi certainly rates Garcia, as he explained last season with a real endorsement to the Spanish press.

"Eric is extraordinary," said Xavi to the media late last year.

"I value him a lot, he is important to us. He plays in a very complicated position because, at Barca, a centre-back is always exposed. But he is a role model in the dressing room and we value him a lot."

Possessing some English top flight experience, he could be a solid candidate to cover for Timber, especially on a financially do-able loan deal.

Burnley: Dyche dropped transfer masterclass by selling £25m "handful"

After six consecutive seasons in the Premier League, Burnley were finally relegated back to the Championship during the 2021/22 season.

Although throughout his time at Turf Moor the English man was constantly praised for getting the most out of players on a limited budget.

Who did Burnley sign under Dyche?

Wout Weghorst

Following Sean Dyche’s sacking as Clarets boss, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believed Dyche did an amazing job, considering the little resources he was given.

He said:

"He had a bantamweight budget and yet punched hard against the heavyweights for years."

Under Dyche, Burnley had a very clear transfer policy as eight of their 10 most expensive signings under the 52-year-old were all from the Championship.

Since Dyche was sacked and Burnley promoted back to the Premier League only their 10th most expensive signing Josh Brownhill remains at the club.

One of the players who has moved on is Chris Wood, who left for Newcastle in January 2022, however, the decision to let him leave during their relegation battle looks like it could have been a stroke of genius by Dyche.

How much did Newcastle pay for Chris Wood?

Wood joined Burnley from Leeds United in the 2017 summer transfer window for a then-club-record fee of £15m.

During his time with Leeds, the now 31-year-old made 88 appearances, scored 44 goals and provided nine assists.

However, after joining Burnley he revealed that he couldn’t wait to play for Burnley in the Premier League.

He said:

"I've had tastes of being in there but I've never had the chance to give it a proper bash.

"Coming here I feel I've got a proper opportunity to do that. I've never started a Premier League game and this is what I want to do.

"This is a club that wants to stay in the Premier League for years to come and it's going that way."

Eventually, after four and half years at Turf Moor, the striker left Burnley to join Newcastle for £25m.

This was a significant fee for a forward who had only scored three goals all season.

Why did Newcastle sign Chris Wood?

chris-wood-transfer-leeds-united-burnley

Despite only scoring three goals for Burnley before joining the Magpies, Wood was part of a Burnley team that struggled to score goals throughout his time with them.

In all four of his full Premier League seasons for Burnley, the New Zealand international hit over 10 goals, with his highest tally being 14 in the 2019/20 season.

In total Wood made 165 appearances for Burnley, scoring 53 goals and registering nine assists, this goal-scoring form meant that the forward finished as Burnley’s top goalscorer in three of his four full seasons.

Following Burnley’s 2-0 win over Fulham, Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, was full of praise for the West Bromwich Albion academy graduate after his first-half goal.

He said:

"It's almost like a player you've been watching for a few years and then all of a sudden you wake up to the fact that he's better than I thought he was.

"He's been a big handful tonight. It's a brilliant strike. It's one of those where he hits across it and it's more difficult for the goalkeeper, it's fading away from him.

“The little bit of skill doesn't quite come off to start with but it's a brilliant finish."

During his final full season in 2020/21 with the Clarets, Wood proved himself as the focal point and main man of the team, as he almost single-handedly kept up a Burnley side that finished 17th.

This was shown through his stats, per Sofascore.

Despite only having the ninth-highest average rating in the team of 6.8, Wood scored 12 goals, nine more than anyone else in the team.

He also provided the second most assists (three), took the second most shots per game (2.1) although in first place was Jimmy Dunne who only played in three games, and finally he had the most shots on target per game (1.2).

For context, Wood’s 12 goals equated to 36.36% of Burnley’s 33 goals during the 2020/21 season, and last season Haaland’s 36 goals contributed to 38.29% of Manchester City’s 94 goals, showing just how important the Kiwi was to the Clarets.

What happened to Chris Wood after Burnley?

After moving to Newcastle, Wood couldn’t find the form he discovered while at Burnley, in his first year with the club, he made 35 appearances in the league, playing a total of 1.8k minutes, however, he was only able to find the back of the net on four occasions.

However, after not scoring for his first four Newcastle games, Neville confirmed on his podcast that he still thought Wood was still a good signing.

He said:

“I like the signing of Wood.

"He had a big impact on that game today

“For me, I think that fixed presence, I don’t think Newcastle have had that for a few years whereby they’ve got someone to be able to play up to.

“Yes, he’s not going to score a great amount of goals. I don’t really care about that to be honest with you.”

Despite the praise from the Manchester United legend Wood was sold to Nottingham Forest for £15m, after just a year at St James’ Park.

This means the Magpies made a loss of £10m, as well as the striker costing them £6.5m per Premier League goal and £714k per appearance.

Since moving to Forest Wood has again failed to find his form of old, so far, he has made just 11 appearances in the league, scoring only two goals.

Furthermore, he only had an average Sofascore rating of 6.64 for Forest last season, which placed him as their 25th best-performing player, out of 33.

This has caused his market value to drop by £21m since his move to Newcastle, per FootballTransfers, who now estimate his worth to be just £4m.

Overall, selling and cashing in on Wood when he did proved to be a stroke of genius by Dyche as since leaving Burnley, the New Zealand international has seen nothing else other than his game time cut and his scoring rate drop dramatically.
