Gayle's blazing ton hands Sunrisers first loss

The opener smashed his sixth IPL hundred and 21st overall in T20s to lead Kings XI Punjab to 193 for 3, a score that proved too much for Sunrisers Hyderabad

Agarkar: Sunrisers lacked firepower in the chase

Prior to the start of IPL 2018, Kings XI Punjab’s director Virender Sehwag said Chris Gayle would be worth the money spent on him if he were to win his team two or three games. Gayle has now played two match-winning innings in two matches. Four days after his 33-ball 63 against Chennai Super Kings, Gayle shellacked his sixth IPL hundred and 21st overall in T20s to consign Sunrisers Hyderabad to their first defeat of the season. On Sunday, Gayle lined up CSK’s medium-pacers, but adopted a different approach against a formidable Sunrisers attack. He saw off Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s first spell and later unleashed a brutal assault on Rashid Khan’s legspin. All told, Gayle smashed 42 off 16 balls from Rashid at a strike-rate of 262.50.Gayle batted through the innings for his 104 not out off 63 balls, which also included four twos. In pursuit of 194, Sunrisers lost early wickets as well as Shikhar Dhawan to an elbow injury, and there was no way back for them, despite fifties from their captain Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey.Tye’s knuckle balls do the job

Andrew Tye, the Kings XI Punjab seamer, finished with figures of 4-0-23-2. Those two wickets included those of Kane Williamson and Deepak Hooda, both deceived by knuckle balls. Here’s Tye at the post-match press conference:
On choosing the knuckle ball: “It all depends on how I’m feeling at that time – whether the knuckle ball or the offcutter or the legcutter, back of the hand or anything – all depends on what I feel is working for me on the day. Today it was the knuckle ball, so I stuck with it and bowled a lot of them. Sometimes it works, sometimes I get hit into the crowd and look like a bit of an idiot.”
On the advantage of bowling second: “As a bowler [we] look what the opposition has done, what bowlers have worked for them. [Today] we summed it up to this: it was skidding on a bit, so a good hard length when the ball was new was sort of not bouncing. So you could pull it back a little bit, and [use] the slower balls to hit hard on that wicket to give the batsman no freedom to hit in the arc.”

Kings XI’s Jekyll-and-Hyde start
After becoming the first captain to opt to bat this season, R Ashwin reckoned Kings XI would be better off setting a target as opposed to chasing one against the best attack in the tournament at one of India’s larger grounds. Gayle and KL Rahul began cautiously against the swing and change-ups of Bhuvneshwar and Chris Jordan, and played out 12 dots in the first three overs. Gayle then launched Kings XI’s innings when he hit four boundaries in seven balls, including three leg-side sixes off Jordan and Rashid. In between, he was dropped on 14 by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha off Rashid’s first ball – a difficult chance off the toe end when he looked to cut.Rahul, at the other end, had an early scare when he was given out lbw on 5, but he survived after a review thanks to a thin inside edge. Rahul moved to 18 off 20 before being pinned in front by a Rashid skidder. Rahul’s Karnataka team-mate Mayank Agarwal flickered briefly before slicing Siddarth Kaul to backward point for 18 off 9; by then Kings XI were 83 for 2 in the 11th over.Chris Gayle raises his bat upon reaching his 21st T20 century•BCCI

Gayle v Rashid: round-II
With two wickets falling in quick succession, Gayle slowed down and brought up his fifty off 39 balls. He then kicked into top gear and became only the second batsman, after AB de Villiers, to take Rashid for four sixes in an over. Gayle did so off successive balls, in the 14th over, which cost 27 runs. When Rashid erred too full, Gayle simply opened up hips and put the sightscreen in danger, and when Rashid dragged his length back he mowed the ball over the leg side. The visual moment of the over, though, came when he hared back for a second run off the last ball and wore a wry smile. With their premier spinner leaking runs, Sunrisers were forced to look beyond their frontline options. Deepak Hooda, however, could not do much with his part-time offspin.Gayle’s party continues
After getting to his first fifty off 39 balls, Gayle surged to his second off only 19 balls. He moved to 99 with his 11th six – the most by a batsman this season – and raised the landmark by guiding one past backward point in the 19th over. He brought out the ‘cradle’ celebration and later dedicated the knock to his daughter, who will turn two on Friday.Gayle found supporting hands from Karun Nair (31) and Aaron Finch (14*) as Kings XI finished strongly at 193 for 3. Rashid, the best T20 bowler right now, was left nursing his worst figures of 4-0-55-1.Sunrisers sink in chase
Sunrisers suffered a major setback in the first over when Dhawan retired hurt after taking a blow to the elbow, and he did not return to bat. Mohit Sharma varied his pace excellently and bowled both Wriddhiman Saha and Yusuf Pathan to leave Sunrisers at 37 for 2 in five overs.Williamson and Pandey worked past the early strikes with a 76-run stand for the third wicket, but they struggled to keep in touch with the soaring asking rate. Mujeeb Zadran’s mystery spin, Andrew Tye’s knuckle balls, and the bigger boundaries in Mohali did not help Sunrisers’ cause either. When Williamson holed out for 54 off 41 balls in the 15th over, Sunrisers were left needing 81 off 34 balls. It was just too much for a middle order lacking muscle.

Sri Lanka Cricket’s elections will be held at the board’s Annual General Meeting on 19th May, SLC has announced, with the deadline for nominations set for April 27. Incumbent President Thilanga Sumathipala confirmed that he would run for another two-year term following recent changes to Sri Lanka’s Sports Law.”The Minister of Sports recently changed the Sports Law so that you can hold office for four years,” explained SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala. “We strongly believe that elections should be held once in two years, and the Sports Law says you can get reelected after two years.”Sumathipala also revealed that changes could be expected to the make up of his team, with certain members opting out due to other engagements such as present SLC Secretary Air Commodore Roshan Biyanwala. The core of his team however is expected to remain the same with the likes of Vice Presidents, K. Mathivanan and Mohan De Silva, and Treasurer Shammi Silva likely to contest.Despite having been ousted several times on legal grounds Sumathipala is yet lose an SLC election, as such he is favoured to win reelection, though his opponents are yet to be announced.Following the elections there will also need to be a decision taken on SLC’s selection committee, whose term is due to end on May 15. That decision though will need to be approved by Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister, the identity of whom will only be known following a soon to take place Cabinet reshuffle.

Everton: Dyche must unleash ‘special’ £15m gem in his best role

Everton triumphantly claimed their first Premier League victory of the season yesterday, as they travelled to Brentford and came away with a well-earned three points.

Given the hosts' home record last season saw them lose only twice, few predicted anything other than a routine victory for Thomas Frank's men, against the beleaguered visitors who were yet to win a game in the league.

However, with the Bees starting slowly, Sean Dyche sought to capitalise. Abdoulaye Doucoure's goal set the tone with a sweet half-volleyed finish before James Tarkowski nodded in from a corner and Dominic Calvert-Lewin wrapped up the points with his late goal.

A perfect afternoon for the travelling Toffees, who bore witness to a huge victory which is now set to kickstart their campaign.

Whilst there were numerous outstanding performers for a side who rained down 18 shots despite only enjoying 43% of the ball, one man shone yet again despite his continued presence in an unfamiliar role.

However, should James Garner continue to play like that from the right wing, there is little chance that he might return to his favoured central midfield.

How did James Garner play vs Brentford?

As the only change from the side that whimpered to a 1-0 home defeat against Arsenal a week ago, the 22-year-old general was employed to replace the attack-minded Arnaut Danjuma, with Dyche clearly seeking to unleash a game plan.

Seeking to pack out the midfield whilst also ensuring they retained a keen defensive impetus on both flanks, Garner marked a fine option to fulfil such a role.

james-garner-everton-brentford-opinion

Having shone for England U21s at right-back in their recent European Championship success, already his ability to star from the right was renowned. However, the former Burnley boss endeavoured not to stifle the creativity that the Manchester United academy graduate clearly boasts, by deploying him just in front of Ashley Young.

This quickly turned into a masterstroke, as the hosts remained frustrated with the lack of options they were presented with from teammates. Having a host of intelligent pressers, all of whom have the rigid defensive structure locked down, was bound to be imperative, and Garner was just one of a perfectly drilled system of players willing to fight for the win.

It did help that the midfielder enjoyed one of his outstanding games in royal blue, as a consistent creative threat despite his reliable solidity.

He would maintain an impressive 92% pass accuracy throughout the clash, yet blended such an economical display with a whopping four key passes, via Sofascore. Relentless until the final whistle, his work in dispossessing Nathan Collins showcased his defensive know-how, before he allowed that quality to shine through by slipping in his compatriot to score the third.

The game was over with that goal, forged almost solely by the endeavour and excellence of Garner.

However, as aforementioned, the former Nottingham Forest loanee was not to shirk his defensive responsibilities, still chipping in with three tackles and one clearance to justify his 8.0 rating, the second-highest of any player on the pitch, via Sofascore.

This aligned well with the Liverpool Echo's post-match player ratings, who offered the following summation of this display which merited an 8/10 rating in their eyes: "Repaid his manager’s faith in him to deploy him out wide early on as his cross from the left wing picked out Tarkowski for his flick-on to Doucoure for the opener and then hustled and harried to win the ball back before picking out substitute Calvert-Lewin for the third."

Having joined for just £15m in 2022, it finally seems like the Toffees are set to enjoy the best of Garner, who has seemingly shaken off his injury troubles to become a mainstay in the side, no matter where he is played.

Who could James Garner replace?

With Dyche clearly favouring a more workmanlike midfield, given the trio of Amadou Onana, Idrissa Gana Gueye and Doucoure is seldom altered, Garner could perhaps be a victim of his own technical prowess and versatility.

The former all share a relentless work ethic and a focus on solidity, and whilst it often negates the opposition's attack, it also blunts their own due to a lack of creativity from midfield.

It is well known the quality that the 6 foot 1 Garner boasts, but he has still had to battle for any first-team involvement since joining. The £30k-per-week wizard even admitted his desperation for minutes by noting: “Wherever I am wanted, I’ll play.”

This came years after the "special" talent, as branded by Statman Dave, gave his own verdict on his favoured role: "Personally, I’m not too fussed if I play as a 6 or 8. Throughout the academy I played as a deeper lying 6. People maybe questioned whether could I score and create but when I got to the 21s I showed I could also play box to box."

Such adaptability and a willingness to sacrifice himself for the team makes the midfielder far more likely to be used to plug gaps, even though it could be argued that his creativity outranks most of the aforementioned three.

After all, whilst Onana might boast 0.8 key passes per game, his youth leads to him slipping in and out of games, often unable to dominate for a full 90. Then, whilst Doucoure has shown up with some big goals across the last 12 months, even he can go missing, despite remaining one of the side's biggest threats.

However, if anyone was to lose their place in the side it would surely be Gueye, given the obvious drop-off that the 33-year-old has suffered even if he remains a tireless enforcer.

Still an intelligent footballer, the Senegal international is prone to some truly uncomfortable moments, playing blind passes and dawdling in possession in dangerous areas.

One such example was showcased in their 4-0 away loss to Arsenal last season, where he was lambasted for gifting the hosts their second by talkSPORT pundit Dean Ashton on commentary: "That was just really poor, slow play from Idrissa Gana Gueye.

"You cannot switch off the way Idrissa Gana Gueye has done there. It is a massive, massive error."

To replace that kind of unreliability with the ever-improving Garner, and not only would they retain high effort levels, but that injection of creativity could prove integral in providing even more chances for the forwards.

After yesterday's display against Brentford, where the Englishman dominated, surely Dyche must be considering shifting him across to allow him to shine in his favoured role.

Tottenham: Spurs eye moves to sign three new stars; could cost more £150m+

Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be eyeing an ambitious swoop for three players as they look to lay look to go from strength to strength under Ange Postecoglou.

Latest Tottenham news…

Spurs are still yet to lose a Premier League match in their opening eight fixtures, recording six victories and two draws in total under the tutelage of boss Ange Postecoglou this term.

Luton were the latest victim to come unstuck against Tottenham on Saturday despite the fact the visitors played out the entirety of the second half with ten men, with Yves Bissouma judged to have committed an act of simulation in the dying embers in the first half and subsequently receiving a second yellow card.

Nevertheless, Football Insider claim that both Spurs and West Ham United could be dealt a blow in their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who could open talks over a new contract at Stamford Bridge despite being a target for both sides in the summer transfer window.

Gallagher is set to be out of contract at the Blues in 2025; however, Tottenham may now need to turn their attention elsewhere after the England international's resurgence under former Lilywhites' boss Mauricio Pochettino. Meanwhile, recent reports from Turkey suggest that Tottenham sent scouts to Old Trafford to watch Galatasaray ace Kerem Akturkoglu alongside his teammates Victor Nelsson and Sacha Boey.

Experienced Tottenham defender Ivan Perisic is believed to have come to an agreement with former club Hadjuk Split regarding a return to his homeland in January. Perisic is currently out with a serious ACL injury and isn't expected to take to the field for his current employers again and could potentially move on in the January transfer window.

Latest Tottenham transfer news: Mikel Merino, Victor Osimhen and Edmond Tapsoba

Reports in Spain shared a Tottenham transfer update, saying the club are keen to bring in Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino and could look to utilise his quality and vision in the engine room alongside James Maddison and Bissouma, possibly next summer.

Meanwhile, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba have also been referenced as two other players who could join the ranks; however, the outlet claim that they could cost over €170 million (£147 million), so this could exceed the £150 million mark if Merino's potential fee is also brought into consideration.

Out of the three mooted signings, Osimhen is the one who probably catches the eye the most, which is hard to argue with given his 64 goals and 15 assists in 110 appearances for Napoli across all competitions.

Real Sociedad midfielder Merino has claimed an average match rating of 7.12/10 in 2023/24 for his exploits on the pitch for club and country, demonstrating his capacity to be a reliable and consistent performer in the middle of the park, as per WhoScored.

In La Liga, the 27-year-old has also recovered around 6.5 balls per game for Real Sociedad, evidencing his ability to engage efficiently with the dirty work in midfield when required, as per Sofascore, so it could be an exciting 12 months in the transfer window.

Mason Crane passes stress test as Hampshire see off Surrey in Royal London Cup

Mason Crane claimed three wickets on his return from injury as Hampshire edged out Surrey in a rain-affected contest

ScorecardMason Crane and Rilee Rossouw starred as Hampshire continued their 100 percent record in the Royal London One-Day Cup – as they edged out Surrey by four wickets.Legspinner Crane grabbed 3 for 45 on his first appearance at the Ageas Bowl since making his Test debut over the winter, before Rossouw blasted a memorable 90, and Joe Weatherley bundled Hampshire over the line, to condemn Surrey to their second defeat of the tournament.Hampshire were set 227 to win from 34 overs, on DLS method, after Surrey had amassed 262 in 44 rain-affected overs, thanks to Dean Elgar’s 91.Rossouw and Hashim Amla set about the task enthusiastically, with the latter creaming a series of cut shots to the boundary. But the former South Africa Test captain, having helped put on 52 for the first wicket, was leg before to a Rikki Clarke ball that jagged in.Rossouw then went on the attack, plunging Sam Curran and Clarke for sixes on the way to a 34-ball fifty. Vince scored 14 in a 63-run partnership with Rossouw before he was bowled by Gareth Batty while attempting to give himself space to drive.Weatherley joined the swashbuckling Rossouw to add the third half-century stand of the innings but Rossouw fell ten runs short of what would have been a deserved ton as he was bowled by Clarke.Jimmy Adams and Brad Taylor both came and went, skying to Foakes and Meaker respectively, before Gareth Berg, who had received a reprieve as replays showed his edge behind hadn’t carried, was bowled – all three to Clarke.Curran spilled Lewis McManus at third man before the wicketkeeper-batsman, along with Weatherley, 46 not out, edged Hampshire to victory with seven balls to spare.Earlier, Rory Burns won the toss and elected to bat on a good-looking wicket, which was to offer equal assistance for bat and ball, with both sides deciding to pick unchanged XIs from their opening matches.England Under-19s star Will Jacks drove to a diving Jimmy Adams at short cover in the sixth over to bring Burns and Elgar together to add 93 for the second wicket.Elgar produced a scrappy innings, full of swings across the line and dabs into gaps, but while it wouldn’t win any style points it proved effective. The South African reached his half-century from 50 balls before spinners Crane and Brad Taylor started the mid-innings squeeze. Crane struck in three successive overs to have Burns, for a well-made 46, and Ollie Pope lbw before producing a devilish delivery to beat Ben Foakes outside his off-stump, with Lewis McManus completing the stumping. While Crane was making the headline by taking wickets, Taylor was stopping the runs – their combined statistics a miserly 3 for 88 from 18 overs. The fast bowlers returned and Fidel Edwards delivered a rising bouncer which bruised Curran’s glove before being caught behind. And then Berg had Elgar chopping on for 91, before the rain paused the game after 37.1 overs – eventually play resumed with the match cut to 44 overs a side. From the remaining 6.5 overs, Surrey managed to score 64 runs, with Scott Borthwick and Clarke putting on 56, with the latter lbw to Edwards in the penultimate over but it wasn’t enough to prevent Rossouw’s fireworks.
