Rangers: "Perfect" 50 y/o boss could bring out the best in Cifuentes

Glasgow Rangers could be nearing the end of their new manager search as James Bisgrove aims to find a replacement for Michael Beale by the return of domestic football next weekend.

Who will be the next Rangers manager?

Since Beale was sacked at the start of October, there have been several names who have been linked with the vacant role.

The two clear front-runners however are Kevin Muscat and Philippe Clement and journalist Chris Jack has provided a recent update on the position.

He said: “Rangers will continue discussions with Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat into the weekend."

It looked as though the new man would be unveiled by the end of the week, yet the board are clearly taking their time over such an important decision.

The Ibrox side have gone through three permanent managers in just under two years and this cycle needs to stop if sustained success is to be achieved.

Yokohama F. Marinos manager Kevin Muscat.

Whoever does secure the job, they will have to get a tune out of a squad which has disappointed thus far. The summer signings have failed to hit the ground running, most notably Jose Cifuentes.

Will Jose Cifuentes improve?

Appointing Muscat could bring the best out of the squad, especially with his fiery reputation and no-nonsense approach, similar to his playing career.

Hailed as “perfect” by analyst Petar Petrov, the 50-year-old likes to play with an attacking intent while also being aggressive across the pitch and these qualities could suit a player like Cifuentes, who suffered in Beale’s system.

Before arriving at the Gers in the summer, Cifuentes had impressed at Los Angeles FC in MLS, creating five big chances, averaging 1.7 key passes per game and succeeding with 1.4 successful dribbles per game, clearly showcasing his attacking abilities.

Ecuador international Jose Cifuentes.

He even led the club to the MLS title during the 2022 season and having featured for Ecuador at the World Cup, he was looked upon as a shrewd signing by Beale, especially as he cost only £1.2m.

It hasn’t exactly turned out well so far however, with the midfielder failing to really carry the form he showed at LAFC into Glasgow as he has managed to register just one assist across 12 games.

Across the Gers squad, Cifuentes ranks seventh for accurate passes per game (51.3) while also ranking 11th for key passes per game (0.8), third for big chances created (two) and a lowly 16th for successful dribbles per game (0.3), clearly suggesting he isn’t getting forward as often as he did during his spell in America.

Muscat will surely use the 24-year-old as the focal point of his midfield given his respective talents, yet improvements will need to be made if he hopes to shine at the Light Blues.

There is no questioning his talent and perhaps Beale’s tactical system, or lack of, didn’t really help him settle in at the Gers, but if Muscat is appointed as the new manager, he could help him thrive.

The Ecuadorian has the potential to be one of the finest players at the club, he just needs to be deployed in the correct position in a system that suits his strengths.

Stalemate looms in Manchester relegation battle

Hampshire might gain more satisfaction from a fourth-day draw as they anticipate the Royal London Cup final on Saturday

Kent go top of Division Two

ScorecardDivision One strugglers Lancashire and Hampshire look destined to play out a high-scoring Specsavers County Championship draw at Emirates Old Trafford.Despite centuries from Alex Davies and Dane Vilas the hosts could not overtake Hampshire’s first innings total of 451. The visitors then reached stumps on 66 for 2 second time around, 106 runs ahead. With Lancashire and Hampshire both in the bottom three neither are likely to have achieved much headway by stumps on the final day, although Hampshire may be the happier, having avoided any morale-affecting defeat ahead of Saturday’s Royal London Cup final against |Kent. The Red Rose county, who have found runs hard to come by this summer, put in a solid performance on a flat pitch as the batsmen continued to dominate. Then a wicket apiece for Tom Bailey and Graham Onions kept Hampshire in check with time running out for them to build on their slender lead and force a win.Jimmy Adams was trapped on the crease by Onions as he fell lbw for four. Following on from his century on the opening day, Hampshire captain James Vince was then strangled down the leg-side off Bailey for 18.Lancashire began the day on 140 for 3, still 311 runs in arrears. But Davies and Vilas put immediate pressure on the Hampshire bowlers.Vilas reached a 114-ball half-century with six fours. The pair kept the scoreboard ticking over and brought up their 100 partnership.Davies notched his maiden first-class ton of the summer and the fourth of his career off 176 balls, but he was only able add 15 more before needlessly gifting Rilee Rossouw a catch at gully off Ian Holland (208-4).The wicket of Davies brought all-rounder Jordan Clark (81) out to the middle to join Vilas, and the 27-year-old played a perfect supporting role, allowing the South African to advance impressively. In the opening over after lunch, Vilas reached his fourth century for Lancashire off 169 balls having hit two consecutive boundaries and 16 in all.The fifth wicket pair looked to bat their side into the lead, but Vilas was trapped lbw by Kyle Abbott having faced 216 balls and hit 20 fours.Clark, who shared 112 with Vilas, was left to marshall the tail with Lancashire still 131 runs behind, and a seventh wicket partnership of 58 with Arron Lilley boosted their cause. But Lancashire, in the search for quick runs with the follow-on now out of the equation, lost their final three wickets for 17 runs as Stephen Parry and Bailey both fell for six. Sandwiched in between, Clark fell was run out by Vince.

Everton: Toffees made £15m profit on the sale of dud once compared to Rooney

Everton's downward spiral may have damaged their reputation for attracting the world's biggest talents, but it hasn't prevented them from unearthing stars from their academy.

Throughout their history, the Toffees have established a clear philosophy of developing youthful talent and giving them an opportunity to shine in the first team.

Wayne Rooney is undoubtedly the most talented player ever to graduate through their academy, making his league debut at the age of 16 before going on to become one of the best Premier League players of all time.

While it would be near impossible for any player to replicate the unparalleled impact he made for Manchester United and England, there was one academy graduate who was expected to challenge the legacy that the forward foraged.

Ross Barkley was once heralded as the 'next Rooney' by former teammate Leighton Baines, but would ultimately crumble under that hefty weight of expectation.

How did Ross Barkley perform for Everton?

When Barkley made his first-team debut as a 17-year-old in August 2011 against Queens Park Rangers, plaudits streamed in for the youngster across that season having showcased his swashbuckling style that caused bums to rise off seats.

ross-barkley-everton-academy-finch-farm-dyche-sean-mcallister

Everton icon Tim Cahill said: “He is the most talented footballer I have worked with,” while former Arsenal defender and current pundit Martin Keown said: “Barkley will be one of the best players we will ever see in this country.”

Some high praise for someone who had only just turned 18 in that season and had only made six senior appearances for the club in the top flight.

The campaigns that followed, however, would soon see the free-roaming attacking midfielder showcase his ability to ghost past defenders with his speed, technique and forward-thinking which made him a nightmare to defend against.

Showing glimpses of his talent across his first few years in the first team, it was in the 2015/16 campaign – and his productive partnership with Romelu Lukaku – that would see the talented youngster explode into life.

Everton may have finished in a disappointing 11th place in the top flight, however, Barkley returned eight goals and supplied eight assists in the Premier League, while Lukaku scored 25 goals.

Unfortunately, after one more season at the club in which he produced 14 goal contributions in 36 appearances, he would depart Goodison Park in January 2018 and that would ultimately spark the beginning of his downward spiral.

How much did Everton sell Ross Barkley for?

Despite selling Barkley to Chelsea for £15m and making a colossal profit on their academy asset, the club could have cashed in a couple of years earlier for a significantly higher fee and that is a bitter pill to swallow.

In December 2013, Everton's manager at the time, Roberto Martinez, insisted he wasn't for sale, not even for a world record transfer fee, as per the Mirror.

He said: “Even if we got a Gareth Bale-size valuation we would never even consider it in January.”

Although it seems ludicrous to imagine Barkley leaving for a world-record transfer fee now given how his career has taken a rapid decline, the fact he was valued so highly by Everton in 2013 emphasises just how truly talented he was.

But having been captured by Antonio Conte, with the Englishman describing the move as "unbelievable", his career would, unfortunately, unravel into a nightmare at Chelsea – something which pundit Graeme Souness had foreshadowed after stating that the midfielder "didn't have a brain".

Branded as a 'flop' by several media outlets, including the Mirror, Barkley would only go on to score 12 goals in 100 appearances for the Blues in four and a half years.

He was subsequently released by mutual consent in August 2022, departing for OGC Nice on a free transfer before joining Premier League newcomers Luton Town this summer.

As is so often the way, Barkley is just one of many young English talents who sadly fell victim to media hype.

Guyana Amazon Warriors fast bowler Sohail Tanvir has been fined 15% of his match fee for making an obscene gesture during his team’s home game against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Thursday. Tanvir accepted the sanction handed to him by match referee Denavon Hayles. The incident occurred during the 17th over of the Patriots innings, when Tanvir dismissed Australian Ben Cutting with a yorker that crashed into the middle stump. As Cutting began walking back, Tanvir showed him a double-middle finger, with Cutting’s back turned to him. One ball before the dismissal, Tanvir had been dispatched for a six over long-on by Cutting.Tanvir finished his spell with 1 for 24 in four overs, which was instrumental in restricting the Patriots to 146 for 5, before the Warriors ran down the target in 16.3 overs, with six wickets in hand. Tanvir was the highest wicket-taker in the previous season, and was subsequently retained by the Warriors, for the maximum price of US$160,000.

Gary Ballance ton a reminder Yorkshire's fate is in their own hands

Gary Ballance scored Yorkshire’s first Championship hundred since June to ease hopes of passing the follow-on target at Trent Bridge

Drama at Taunton as Somerset and Lancashire tie

ScorecardSo much has gone wrong for Yorkshire this summer that to some of their followers, possibly even those in the committee room, could be excused for thinking that their luck is simply out, that relegation from Division One is somehow a preordained fate. The lifeline to which the players may cling is that it is in their hands.A well-worn cliché? Of course – but one that, in this instance, applies perfectly. Next to bottom on 94 points from 10 games going into this match, their last three fixtures are against Lancashire, Hampshire and Worcestershire, all of whom began this round feeling similarly fearful. Win any of those, they will have told themselves in the Yorkshire dressing room, and the points are almost worth double. The news from Taunton and Worcester will have done nothing to ease their anxieties. Points for a draw here could be precious, although they may take some securing. Nottinghamshire, themselves not properly out of the woods, made the most of their opportunity against a makeshift Yorkshire attack on an essentially flat pitch, setting a target of 299 just to avoid the follow-on, a total Yorkshire’s brittle batting line-up has achieved only five times all season. In their favour, Nottinghamshire are likewise without a full complement of bowlers. Jake Ball is out for the remainder of the season and Luke Fletcher, their most successful so far, has been on duty in the radio commentary booth rather than on the field – a sideline in which he shows a lot of promise, incidentally – although his absence is expected only to be temporary.Yorkshire made a dreadful start, nonetheless, when Adam Lyth edged the last ball of Mark Footitt’s opening over to gully, where Luke Wood held a fine catch. Footitt is playing his first match for Nottinghamshire on this ground for 11 years, so it will have felt almost like a debut wicket. At least better was to follow for the visiting team. Jeet Raval, the New Zealander who has taken over from his compatriot Kane Williamson as overseas player, had the misfortune to run into a particularly good ball from the left-arm of Harry Gurney, which took out his middle and off stumps, but Harry Brook played nicely for his 47 before Gary Ballance, whose patchy form this season has been in keeping with most of his team-mates, responded to the crisis with a timely century.Brook was out a little tamely, chipping straight to midwicket soon after Samit Patel had begun a 22-over unbroken stint at the pavilion end, but after their alliance had added 78 for the third wicket, Ballance found another solid and adaptable partner in Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who batted with valuable restraint to be unbeaten at the close.Ballance’s century is the first by any Yorkshire batsman since his own against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl in June, which is a telling statistic. Kohler-Cadmore could not get in the side at the beginning of the season but has an opportunity now, his half-century here following on from 81 against Somerset last week.Although there were a few deliveries early in his innings that unsettled him, Ballance eventually began to look comfortable. He scored 76 of his runs in boundaries, often worked off his legs but with a few punchy drives through the off side too.He fell soon after completing his hundred, when Patel – the man of the day for Nottinghamshire – spun one across him to have him caught bat and pad at short leg. Earlier, Patel and Matt Milnes, who made a career-best 43, batted freely in an eighth-wicket stand of 90 that secured maximum batting points for Nottinghamshire for the first time this season. There is not too much in this pitch now but the first overs of the third day may be pivotal, as they often are. If Yorkshire can score another 41 runs to achieve their first objective, they will have a chance to make their second.
