Newcastle United's squad is down to the bare bones and it is having a destructive effect on the team on the pitch. Having beaten Manchester United emphatically on Saturday, the Magpies suffered a devastating 3-0 defeat away at Everton on Thursday night.
Central defender Jamaal Lascelles limped off at Goodison Park, compounding Eddie Howe's misery. However, the attacking department looks rather bare too and Howe had no first-team calibre options on the bench to bring on and change the game as a result.
With the January transfer window quickly approaching, the manager has already begun identifying players who can make a difference for the remainder of the campaign and could make a move for a former Premier League winner.
Newcastle transfer news – Ferran Torres
According to a recent report in Spain, Newcastle United have joined the race for Barcelona's out-of-favour winger Ferran Torres this winter, with the player keen to leave La Blaugrana at the first opportunity.
The outlet stated that the Spaniard has presented himself as a valuable option for the Geordie outfit, who will compete with Serie A champions Napoli and Atletico Madrid for his signature.
Torres is no stranger to English football, having spent two seasons playing under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, winning a league title in his debut campaign before eventually heading to the Catalan giants for £48m.
Since he arrived at the Nou Camp, the Spain international has made 90 appearances in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and recording 11 assists, picking up a La Liga winners' medal for his troubles. Head coach and club legend Xavi even claimed that the forward is "world-class".
However, Torres has played 19 times this term for Barcelona but has started in merely nine of those games, which has reportedly left him unhappy at the club and keen to leave in January, with Newcastle seemingly ready to swoop in and capitalise.
Ferran Torres' stats this season
Despite starting in just nine games in the 2023/24 campaign, Torres is still racking up some decent numbers in front of the goal. The Spanish attacker has found the net five times and registered two assists across the league and the Champions League. This is an average of one goal contribution every 125 minutes for Barca, according to Transfermarkt.
Furthermore, Torres is currently outscoring Newcastle United's Miguel Almiron this season and has even tallied more assists than the Paraguayan. Almiron has scored four goals and boasts just one assist in 22 games in all competitions for the Magpies and is set to turn 30 in the new year.
Howe could be looking to replace the £21m star in the starting lineup and Torres could be the perfect option to do so. Almiron could find himself as a mere squad player in the future if the ex-Valencia star moves to St. James' Park.
Despite Almiron's questionable performances this season, the Paraguay international has held onto his starting spot due to the lack of competition, with Jacob Murphy sidelined with a shoulder injury until the end of January.
Upon Murphy's return to the squad, Howe will need to decide whether to keep him or Almiron, should Torres arrive. Statistically, Torres has outperformed both Murphy and Almiron in a number of key areas despite his limited starts.

This comes after the former Norwich winger managed four goals and two assists in 36 Premier League games last term for the Magpies, whilst the LaLiga ace has already managed three goals in seven starts this season.
Torres is performing better than both as a goalscorer, but Murphy has actually boasted better metrics than Almiron which could leave the ex-Atlanta United man out in the cold if Newcastle complete the signing of the Barcelona wantaway this winter.
Therefore, Howe could land an upgrade on Murphy and Almiron by securing a deal to sign the Spain international.
The pitch condition on day three had forced a restart on a new pitch, but with the batsmen once again affected by inconsistent bounce, the match was called off after 15 overs of play

The Ranji Trophy 2018-19 match between Puducherry and Uttarakhand started afresh on the fourth day, with a new toss taking place on a fresh pitch at the CAP Siechem Ground in Puducherry. However, only 15 overs were possible before the match was called off, with the pitch once again showing inconsistent bounce. On the fourth day, Puducherry had reached 23 for 3 in 15 overs when lunch was taken. However, off the last delivery before the interval, batsman Paras Dogra was hit below the chest. Following a meeting between the captains, umpires and match referee, the match was called off. ESPNcricinfo understands that with the possibility of a result, or even of establishing a first-innings lead, all but gone, Puducherry felt it was better to call the match off rather than risk injury by continuing to play. The game had been badly affected by rain, with the first two days completely washed out. The skies cleared on the third day and the toss finally took place with Puducherry opting to bowl. Play, however, began late, with only six overs bowled before lunch. At that stage, Uttarakhand were 17 for 0.After lunch though, only 14 balls were bowled as umpires M Kuppuraj and Yeshwant Barde took both teams off. This came after Uttarakhand’s openers – Vineet Saxena and Karn Veer Kaushal – indicated discomfort when they copped blows on the body. Saxena was facing up to Pankaj Singh, in his fifth over, and the second ball struck him on the gloves, prompting the action. Uttarakhand were then 20 without loss in 8.2 overs, with Saxena on 11 and Kaushal on 4. There had been five leg-byes.The relevant law for such a case in BCCI’s playing conditions is Law 7.2.1, which states that “in the event of a pitch being considered too dangerous for play to continue in the estimation of the on-field umpires, they shall stop play and immediately advise the BCCI Match Referee.”If, after consulting with the captains, the decision is not to resume play immediately, the on-field umpires have three options, in the following sequence:a) “whether the existing pitch can be repaired, and the match can be resumed from the point it was stopped. In considering whether to authorise such repairs, the BCCI Match Referee must consider whether this would place either side at an unfair advantage, given the play that had already taken place on the dangerous pitch.b) whether an alternative pitch can be used.c) whether the match has to be abandoned.”Having decided that the same pitch could not be repaired, the umpires offered the option of an alternative pitch to the teams. In accordance with Law 7.2.9 of the BCCI’s playing conditions, the match had to be restarted from the first ball. However, the restart could happen only on the fourth day.The alternative pitch had to be prepared and rolled, and there was no further play possible on Day 3. On the fourth day too, the start was delayed by 75 minutes, and play began at 10.30 am. Puducherry captain Rohit D won the toss again, and this time opted to bat.A Cricket Association of Puducherry official expressed unhappiness with how events had unfolded. “There weren’t too many balls that bounced awkwardly,” he said of the original pitch.”And Vineet Saxena has faced Pankaj Singh so many times earlier, they were team-mates for a long time in Rajasthan. I don’t think the pitch was unplayable,” the official told ESPNcricinfo. The official also pointed out that the pitch was under the care of a BCCI-appointed curator in the lead-up to the match, so there wasn’t much the CAP could have done. The decision to abandon the match, has meant it’s been classified as a drawn game with the first innings unfinished, which results in both sides getting one point each.ESPNcricinfo understands that the decision to classify the match as drawn was not arrived at immediately. Initially there was the possibility of looking at whether the fixture could be played at a later date. However, given the schedule with the Ranji Trophy in its end stages, this was not feasible. Puducherry are slated to play the next two rounds of the Ranji Trophy at home: against Manipur from December 30 to January 2, and against Nagaland from January 7 to 10. Uttarakhand are not playing in the next round but will square off against Mizoram in Dehradun from January 7 to 10. Given that the quarterfinals are scheduled from January 15 onwards, this leaves no window to fit in a replay of a four-day match. With both teams get one point each, Uttarakhand have moved to 37 points with a game in hand, while Puducherry have 25 points with two games in hand. Bihar, the other team in the race to qualify from the Plate Group, have 27 points with two games in hand.

With the transfer window set to re-open next month, Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be already plotting potential moves that could be made in the new year, with centre-back a particular priority amid the current lack of depth and the loss of Micky van de Ven to injury.
Amid Ange Postecoglou's desire to bolster his backline, the suggestion is that the Lilywhites have already made contact regarding a possible swoop for OGC Nice sensation, Jean-Clair Todibo, as they look to win the race for the in-demand talent.
Spurs transfer news – Jean-Clair Todibo
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the north London outfit have already "opened talks" with the Ligue 1 outfit in a bid to step up their interest in the 23-year-old, with Spurs hoping to steal a march on Premier League rivals, Manchester United, who are also said to be interested.
This has been corroborated by a report from 90min journalist, Graeme Bailey, with the transfer insider revealing that Postecoglou and co have been told that a deal can be struck for a fee of around £35m in January.
While Bailey reports that the club are also keeping a close eye on the likes of Ben Godfrey, Lloyd Kelly and Union Saint-Gilloise's Koki Machida, it is Todibo who is 'rapidly rising up their shortlist'.
How Jean-Clair Todibo would slot in at Spurs
Not only would the Frenchman – who has been hailed as the "complete package" by talent scout Jacek Kulig – offer an able deputy to the stricken Van de Ven on the left side of the defence, but he could also be a direct rival to Cristian Romero at right centre-back.
The latter man was only recently dubbed the "best defender in the world" by compatriot, Lionel Messi, yet far too often has his recklessness nature proven costly for the Lilywhites, only recently serving a three-game suspension for his straight red card against Chelsea.

If Postecoglou is looking for a more reliable option then Todibo is seemingly the way to go, the former Barcelona man having been in inspired form for a stubborn Nice side this term, helping to keep eight clean sheets from just 14 league outings thus far.
Arguably "one of the most underrated CB's in Europe" – in the words of Kulig – the 6 foot 3 titan could well prove a dream partner for Pedro Porro in that right channel, with the Spurs target's immense recovery speed – as indicated in the clip below – ensuring he can mop up expertly behind the Spaniard when required.
Not only that, but the £35m-rated star also boasts the composure required on the ball to be able to link nicely with Porro, notably ranking in the top 18% among his European peers for progressive passes per 90 – showcasing that he could regularly pick out the full-back when he opts to invert.
If the latter man is to step into the centre of the park – as he so often does in Postecoglou's tactical set-up – then Todibo could well exploit the space down the right with his knack for driving forward with ease, illustrated by the fact that he ranks in the top 5% for progressive carries per 90.
Such an array of qualities would surely compliment the attack-minded Porro – who boasts six assists this season – making Spurs an even more formidable outfit when building up from the back.

Batsman recalled to continue innings despite having left field of play following apparent dismissal

Ben Stokes returns to the crease after his no-ball dismissal•Getty Images
Ben Stokes benefitted from a huge slice of good fortune – as well as a recent rewrite of the Laws of Cricket – as his counterattacking half-century on the opening day of the St Lucia Test was allowed to continue after he had left the field of play following his apparent dismissal by Alzarri Joseph.Stokes, on 52 at the time, had left the field aghast in the 70th over after pulling a short ball from Joseph straight back to the bowler, who checked himself well in his followthrough to cling onto a fast-travelling chance. However, replays on the big screen soon alerted both the crowd and the umpires to the possibility that Joseph had overstepped. That in itself is nothing new – this was, according to Sky Sports, the 18th dismissal that West Indies alone had had a wicket overturned due to a no-ball since January 2017.Unusally, however, Stokes had already crossed the boundary rope and climbed the steps into the pavilion. He had been replaced on the field by England’s No. 7 Jonny Bairstow when the onfield umpire, Rod Tucker signalled the no-ball, following confirmation from Chris Gaffaney in the third umpire’s chair.Until recently, Stokes’ departure from the field of play would have signalled the end of the matter. However, he was the beneficiary of MCC’s decision, in April 2017, to define Law 31.7, which governs the status of batsmen “leaving the wicket under a misapprehension”.The new code, which came into force in October 2017, includes an additional clause to reflect the ubiquity of televised replays in major matches. The law now reads: “An umpire shall intervene if satisfied that a batsman, not having been given out, has left the wicket under a misapprehension of being out. The umpire intervening shall call and signal Dead ball to prevent any further action by the fielding side and shall recall the batsman.”A batsman may be recalled at any time up to the instant when the ball comes into play for the next delivery, unless it is the final wicket of the innings, in which case it should be up to the instant when the umpires leave the field.”Stokes finished the day on 62 not out, as he and his fifth-wicket partner, Jos Buttler, batted through to the close without further alarm in their stand of 124.”Thank God for technology,” said Stokes at the close of play. “‘It’s a first for me and it’s probably something they need to get control of. In international cricket you shouldn’t be walking off, getting into the changing rooms, and then back out there two minutes later.”It’s a good job I didn’t take my pants off. It was just a bizarre bit of cricket all round.”I tried to get myself back in that same frame of mind I was when me and Jos were going well out there,” he added. “There was a lot of cheering going on so I had to blank that out and start again.”
Journalist Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool are interested in signing a player who is "characterised by his calm" and excels in passing out from defence.
Liverpool's title hopes surge
The Reds produced a scintillating performance to beat Newcastle United 4-2 in the Premier League on New Year's Day, pulling three points clear at the top of the table in the process. It was arguably one of Liverpool's most convincing performances in a number of weeks, and while some of the finishing was disappointing, it was a night that suggested that they are very much Manchester City's biggest rivals in the title race.
Some fans feel that new signings in the January transfer window would give Jurgen Klopp's side an even better chance of going all the way, with certain areas of the pitch looking light. Centre-back is a position that could do with reinforcements after Joel Matip was ruled out for the season, and the Reds have been linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen ace Piero Hincapie.
The midfield was revamped last summer, following major issues with Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and others, but Fulham's Joao Palhinha is seen as a reported target for Liverpool, too, should Klopp feel the need to bring in a more out-and-out defensive midfielder than Alexis Mac Allister.
It looks as though the Merseysiders could be eyeing a player who is capable of shining in both of the aforementioned positions, according to a new transfer claim.
Liverpool eyeing Ko Itakura
Taking to X, Romano revealed that Liverpool are one of the clubs showing an interest in Ko Itakura, with the Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back scouted by the Reds a number of times.
Japan's Ko Itakura
"Ko Itakura, one to watch in 2024 as top clubs are monitoring Japanese CB. Understand Liverpool have sent their scouts multiple times to follow Itakura’s performances. Tottenham also monitored him as Ange Postecoglou wanted Ko at Celtic. Release clause NOT valid in January."
Ikatura could be a really good signing by Liverpool, with the 26-year-old someone who could add much-needed depth at the heart of the defence, following the ACL injury suffered by Matip. The Japan international was once described as a player who is "characterised by his calm" by former Schalke coach Dimitrios Grammozis, and he represented his country three times at the 2022 World Cup, while his composure is really shown in his passing ability.
Ikatura would clearly have to accept that he was coming in as a squad player, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate Liverpool's undisputed first-choice centre-back pairing, but he has been phenomenal this term, actually ranking as one of the best passers out of all European centre-backs.
Liverpool and Spurs battling for “intelligent” Wolves star
He is capable of excelling in a number of positions.
ByHenry Jackson Jan 1, 2024
At 26, the Monchengladbach hero is at a great age, having years under his belt at the top level but still arguably not at his peak, and in Wataru Endo, he would have an international colleague at Anfield who could help him settle quickly.
There is also the added bonus of Ikatura being capable of playing in defensive midfield if needed, and Klopp may see such versatility as a key asset.
