Ray Parlour: Arsenal could seal January loan move instead of spending big

Speaking to Football FanCast on behalf of NetBet Online Casino, Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has shared his thoughts on the club's January transfer window, and says sporting director Edu could look to seal a loan striker signing rather than spend big money.

Arteta linked with Jesus and Nketiah alternative

Since far before the winter window even opened for business, there have been widespread reports that manager Mikel Arteta wishes to bring in a new centre-forward.

The Spaniard is attempting to guide Arsenal to their first Premier League title in nearly 20 years, but has just Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus to choose from as his natural number nine options. Jesus has sporadically succumbed to injury at points this campaign, while Nketiah has been linked with a move away from Arsenal.

Arsenal have been struggling in front of goal over the last few games as well, with Arteta's side wasting a host of glorious chances during their 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium earlier this month.

The Gunners' issues going forward could go some way to being solved through the signing of a proven, goalscoring striker. Arsenal are reported admirers of Brentford star Ivan Toney, but Bees boss Thomas Frank has already stated that it would take an "unbelievable" price to tempt him away before February 1.

Edu has other rumoured options, though, like Getafe striker Borja Mayoral among others. Reports suggest Arsenal made a rejected £22 million bid for Mayoral in the last fortnight, with the north Londoners seemingly looking at cheaper Toney alternatives.

After spending north of £200 million in the summer transfer window, Arsenal appear to have a slightly more limited January budget and may have to be careful when it comes to FFP regulations.

Parlour backs Arsenal to sign striker on loan

We sat down with ex-Gunners fan favourite Parlour to discuss Arsenal's window and whether they could indeed bring in a new striker, despite the roadblocks facing Edu.

Parlour says Arsenal could sign a striker on loan as the solution to this, and he thinks the likes of Toney will be too far out of reach this month.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

"It will be very difficult for Arsenal to sign the striker they want in January as Toney could well be the number 1 target, but he will likely cost £80 million which I don’t believe Arsenal can spend right now," Parlour told FFC, in partnership with NetBet Online Casino.

"Brentford need him to ensure they don’t get relegated, so it’s an issue here regarding the transfer fee. Osimhen from Napoli signed a new deal, so he will be too expensive as could Calvert Lewin who Arsenal were rumoured to be interested in.

"I do think Arsenal need to strengthen up front as we had four top strikers in my day with Bergkamp, Henry, Wiltord, Kanu and also Jeffers would pop up with a few goals. Arsenal have two main recognised strikers in Jesus and Nketiah. It’s very tough in January to get the striker you want, so I trust Edu and Mikel to get it right and maybe a loan could happen."

Chris Woakes' five-for shines at end of England's spotless World Cup warm-up

Hosts dominate with bat, ball and in the field despite resistance from Sarfaraz Ahmed and Babar Azam

The Report by Danyal Rasool19-May-2019

The lead-up to the World Cup, if it means anything at all, has gone spotlessly for England. The final ODI at Leeds was the most comfortable win in a series that has, one washout excepted, consisted only of victories against a Pakistan side which will rue slow starts with both bat and ball in the final fixture as they fell to a 54-run defeat. While the batting for England has been relentlessly brilliant over the series, and indeed since 2015, it was Chris Woakes’ performance that stood out at Headingley. Three wickets in his first two overs reduced Pakistan to 6 for 3 and in a chase of 352, that was the game just about done. For good measure, he would return to clean up the tail, too, ending with impressive figures of 5 for 54.Pakistan had brief hope while Sarfaraz Ahmed and Babar Azam put on a massive fourth-wicket stand, contributing 146 while together, but found all hopes dashed by an incredible spell of fielding that yielded three wickets in six overs. Adil Rashid and Jos Buttler were at the centre of it all, Rashid completing a remarkable no-look run-out on the turn to find Babar well short of his ground. He would follow that with an outstanding left-handed catch off his own bowling, and Buttler would add to Pakistan’s misery with the best of the lot.Sarfaraz cut the ball away to third man – or so he thought – and stepped out of his crease before the ball had quite passed Buttler. The wicketkeeper stuck a leg out, and saw the ball hit his boot and roll back to him. Quick as a flash, he had dislodged the bails, and Pakistan were 193 for 6, still 148 runs adrift.Until then, the Pakistan captain’s performance only raised further questions about his reticence to bat in the top five, given how effective he has been higher up the order and his struggles lower down. One of the best in the business at rotating the strike, he came together with Babar to regroup expertly and when the ante needed upping, he took the attack to the spinners, bludgeoning Adil Rashid for two fours and a six off consecutive deliveries as he raced towards what would have been a well-deserved hundred. But the most decisive blows had already been struck in the first fifteen minutes. If you’ve seen Fakhar Zaman get out this way once, you’ve seen them all. Woakes, who found early swing, bowled just outside the off stump, forcing Fakhar to play towards extra cover. The left-hander’s edge went to Joe Root at second slip, almost a carbon copy of his wicket in the first game of the series. That was followed by two lbws where England used every bit of the wood on the wickets, the umpire’s call going their way both times as Woakes toyed with Abid Ali, playing his first game this series, and Mohammad Hafeez, curiously promoted up the order in defiance of recent trends and statistical form.It had been the same for Pakistan in the first innings, after Eoin Morgan had won the toss and decided to set the target for a change. The first two balls from Hasan Ali were wide of the off stump and dispatched for four and from ball one, Pakistan almost appeared disinterested. Inaccuracy was rife and more than once when the ball went down the leg side, Sarfaraz failed to collect effectively, inflating the extras and gifting England needless runs. It allowed the batsmen to plunder 95 from the first 10 even though both openers failed to convert starts, and the platform had been set for Morgan and Root to do the sort of damage they would go on to inflict in the following 20 overs. For the best part of 35 overs, England seemed destined for 400, and, depending on how obnoxiously brilliant Buttler chose to be, potentially well in excess of that mark. Then Imad Wasim, who had started off indifferently, struck twice in three balls to remove Butler and Moeen Ali, and with Root and Morgan having departed not long before, England found themselves down to Ben Stokes and the lower order for the second time in as many games. There wasn’t a century in the whole innings, something England may point to for their inability to post the type of score they had looked on course for throughout the innings. James Vince began with the picturesque elegance that has become as much a blessing as a curse for him, what with his now infamous struggles to kick on. He flattered to deceive once more, top-edging Shaheen Afridi once he reached 33, but with Pakistan never really hitting their straps in the first Powerplay, England were well on their way to a big score. With fellow opener Jonny Bairstow also failing to covert, Root and Morgan accumulated the meat of the England total with a classy 117-run partnership across the next 18 overs. It combined modern belligerence with almost risk-free classical fluidity, not letting three or four quiet overs panic or rush them, capitalising on almost every loose delivery and many tight ones. After seven overs without a boundary following Bairstow’s departure, England found at least one in every one of the following eight. Morgan was the chief aggressor during this period, smashing Fakhar, Shoaib Malik and Imad all out of the attack as Sarfaraz used seven bowlers across the fifty overs. At the time, it seemed churlish of Root to look so disconsolate when he found the deep fielder at 84, England’s Test captain smashing his bat and leaving in something of a huff. In hindsight, though, it was that moment when things went downhill for the hosts. Buttler took his time settling in, and with Imad having found a tighter line and the ability to keep to it consistently, the runs began to dry up. It was perhaps what hurried Buttler as he attempted to put away a rare long-hop from the left-arm spinner straight into backward point’s hands, while Moeen was trapped in front off his second delivery. For the first time, the insouciance with which England normally bat had to be reined in as surviving the fifty overs became a priority.Perhaps the most delightful spell of the series was a throwback 47-run partnership between 18-year old Shaheen Afridi and 19-year old Mohammad Hasnain. Hasnain – who had never scored a professional run before – tormented an agitated David Willey, striking four fours and a six during a breezy innings. It brought temporary smiles on the faces of Mickey Arthur and several Pakistan fans, but they will know there remains plenty of work to be done if they are to seriously challenge teams of England’s ilk at the World Cup. England’s time, without tempting fate, may well be here.

Estamos trabalhando incessantemente, eu, Pássaro, toda a diretoria.

Rangers reach agreement to sign "thunderous" Barisic upgrade

Glasgow Rangers supporters were made to wait for the second signing of the January transfer window, but the wait was worthwhile.

The Gers announced the signing of midfielder Mohammed Diomande recently, as Philippe Clement appears to have been significantly backed by the board, and it is a signing which shows some ambition.

The Ibrox side have the chance to win the treble in the coming months and bolstering his squad gives the Belgian manager the best possible chance to complete what would be an incredible feat, especially considering how poor the club were during the opening months of the season.

With two signings now through the door during the current transfer window, could there be more before deadline day next Thursday?

According to a prominent journalist, the Gers may have secured signing number three…

Clement could land dream Diomande partner in Rangers move for £5m gem

Rangers must do everything they can to sign a talented Croatian midfielder they have scouted

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 26, 2024 Another new signing on the way

Diomande moves to Glasgow on an initial loan deal before the Light Blues have an obligation to buy during the summer transfer window, and he will fit right into Clement’s side.

Having waited three weeks for signing number two, it looks as though Clement is closing in on his third arrival of the month. That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who took to X to share a transfer update.

Now it looks as though it is a waiting game before he can be properly announced, and the move has seemingly come out of nowhere.

The defender is currently on loan in Cyprus from Fluminense, and he would have to terminate his loan spell there before moving to Ibrox.

APOEL coach Ricardo Sa Pinto was asked about Jefte’s future as he was left out of their recent victory, saying: "With Jefte, this is an internal matter that is currently being handled by the club.

"If there is anything new we will inform everyone officially. Be patient and the information will be clear in the next 24 to 48 hours."

This update could give an indication of how long it will take for the Brazilian to join the Gers, and hopefully it will occur in the next few days.

It is no secret that Clement has been aiming to bolster the left-back slot, and now it looks as though the club have signed a promising young South American, and he could eventually be an upgrade on Borna Barisic.

What this move means for Borna Barisic’s future

The Croatian defender has been with the Glasgow side since 2018, and it didn’t take him long to emerge as a key player during Steven Gerrard’s reign at the club.

Across five and a half seasons, the 31-year-old has played 225 times for the club, winning three major trophies while he was arguably at his best during the 2020/21 campaign – the season in which a ten-year league title drought ended in stunning fashion.

Borna Barisic

Barisic not only registered seven goal contributions that term, but he also averaged 2.2 key passes per game along with creating nine big chances and these are sublime figures for a left-back.

His attacking talents have always made up for some poor defensive lapses during his stint in Scotland, but with just a few months remaining on his current contract, it looks as though he could be close to an exit.

Jefte may be a rough diamond and a player who is still developing, yet if given the chance in Scotland, he could eventually be a big upgrade on the Croatian, especially due to his attacking ability.

How Jefte compares to Borna Barisic

The 20-year-old has yet to make his debut for Fluminense and was sent on loan to APOEL to gain some crucial first-team experience.

It has been a solid loan spell thus far for the Brazilian, as he has registered seven goal contributions – three goals and four assists – in just 20 matches and this is five more than what Barisic has achieved in the Premiership this term.

Not only is the youngster more effective in the final third with regard to goal involvement, but he has also registered more shots per game (0.7 vs 0.6) than the current Rangers player, along with succeeding with more successful dribbles per game (2.4 vs 0.3) and delivers a higher percentage of accurate crosses (41% vs 32%), clearly demonstrating his talents going forward in Cyprus.

Kai Watson, founder of the Rangers journal, profiled the left-back amid the news of his apparent signing and he lavished him with praise.

He said: “Jefté looks like he will be a quality attacking threat. He’s tall and quick while still remaining agile on the ball. He always looks to drive at the opposition defence and is comfortable going outside or cutting inside.

“He’s also not afraid of having a pop at goal and has a thunderous strike in his arsenal. He looks like he could be a creative threat while also offering some goalscoring prowess himself.”

Watson also goes on to state that Jefte registers a goal contribution once every 179 minutes, while Barisic registers one every 429 minutes and Ridvan Yilmaz takes 475 minutes per goal contribution.

Given that Clement likes his full-backs to attack and bomb down their respective flanks, the signing of the 6-foot Brazilian could prove to be very astute indeed.

It looks as though Clement is signing players who are young and on the up rather than luring former starlets from England and this system could certainly allow him to establish a proper player trading model.

The club have been left behind by the ability of Celtic to move on their young talent for massively inflated fees, and to get back on a level footing, the Belgian must nurture the talented players he has before moving them on for a solid profit after a few years of service.

Players such as Diomande and Jefte could be perfect examples of this and with a few days left of the transfer window, there may be another surprise or two in store for the expectant Ibrox faithful.

Newcastle player’s exit falls through as PIF’s price tag annoys buying club

Newcastle United's 3-1 win over Aston Villa saw them end a frustrating month on a high, but that doesn't take away from their failure to welcome a single reinforcement for Eddie Howe, whilst also struggling to offload players so far. With under 48 hours left, the Magpies could now end January with a near identical squad to the one they started with.

Newcastle transfer news

It was always going to be a difficult month for those at St James' Park, who have been walking a fine line when it comes to Financial Fair Play. Whilst investment into the women's team, academy and charity foundation doesn't count towards the final figure, meaning that Newcastle are within the guidelines, a loss of £155m over the space of the last three seasons is hardly reason to celebrate as the Premier League begins to crack down on clubs over profit and sustainability.

Newcastle's CEO Darren Eales admitted that the Magpies may need to sell players before spending big again, saying via The Athletic: "The reality is that when you look at FFP, if you take a step back and look at PSR, there’s ways you can create that headroom. Player churn, it’s counterintuitive, but it’s the nature of the beat that it creates headroom.”

That potential need for sell has seen the likes of Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier and Miguel Almiron all linked with moves away this month, albeit without any deals involving those stars reaching confirmation. What's more, according to Gokmen Ozcan, a deal for Jamaal Lascelles to join Besiktas has now fallen through after the Turkish club reacted negatively to PIF's asking price.

Ozcan posted on X, translated from Turkish: "The book of Jamaal Lascelles in Beşiktaş is closed. The English defender could not receive his transfer fee from Newcastle United. The Premier League team asked for 3 million Euros. Beşiktaş responded negatively."

It now looks as though the Newcastle defender is set to stay put this month, with such little time remaining in the transfer window.

Keeping "unbelievable" Lascelles will prove wise

Whilst Lascelles isn't exactly the number one name on Howe's teamsheet when everyone is fit, he has proven to be a vital squad player amid Newcastle's injury crisis this season. And given that there are just under 48 hours left in the transfer window, it's unlikely that the Magpies would be able to find a replacement with the same experience before the window slams shut.

It's clear that Howe is a fan of Lascelles too, saying via The Daily Mail back in July of last year: "He's been an unbelievable captain for us. Captaincy doesn't just exist on the pitch, it has to exist off the pitch. The two things are so intrinsically linked. A lot of our success last year wasn't just down to the team, it came down to a group of players giving everything on and off the pitch.

"There was a group off the pitch that were absolutely magnificent, and Jamaal was one of them. He will want to play but it's how you react that is the key. We move forward together."

Temba Bavuma's first Championship half-century seals Northamptionshire draw with Leicestershire

Bavuma, Alex Wakely guide Northants through afternoon on final day

ECB Reporters Network27-Jun-2019

Temba Bavuma looks to paddle one fine•AFP

Temba Bavuma’s first half-century in the Specsavers County Championship earned Northamptonshire a draw with Leicestershire at Wantage Road.Bavuma’s 68 helped see out the final day with Northants reaching 206 for 6, leading by 212 before a draw was agreed at 4.50pm.Bavuma steered Northants through a fairly quiet afternoon with Alex Wakely, who made 46, and although wickets fell either side of tea, the lead was large enough for Leicestershire to shake hands before the final hour and take 10 points from the game. Northants also took 10 points but are left winless after seven matches and bottom of Division Two after Durham’s win at Sussex. With the second day lost entirely to rain, time was against either side trying to force a result and the final day began with only Leicestershire holding an outside chance of victory but any ambitions were snuffed out by Bavuma. The South Africa international had failed to make a significant score in eight innings before this and will be relieved to have finally passed fifty in this his fifth match of an eight-game stint. A number of previous starts – five times he had passed 20 – were not converted to larger scores but he would have breathed a sigh of relief to go to a half-century in 108 balls with eight fours. He took his time to settle, playing and missing against the new ball having arrived in the 10th over. He drove loosely at Neil Dexter, getting an outside edge that flew just out of the reach of point, and top-edged a hook at Mohammad Abbas that flew down to the fine leg fence, but later drove Will Davis sweetly through the covers and flicked the same bowler past midwicket before sweeping Colin Ackermann’s off-spin for four after tea.It looked like the final period of the game could bring Bavuma a maiden century for his new county but he hooked at Dieter Klein and was caught at deep-square. It was just after Adam Rossington had run past a delivery Ackermann fired down the leg side and was stumped for 19 and it kept Leicestershire’s hopes alive for a short while. After resuming 273 for 7 to reduce the first-innings deficit to just 6, Leicestershire knew the new ball needed to do damage and Abbas struck with his first ball to have Rob Newton well held at second slip for a golden duck. Ricardo Vasconcelos then fended a delivery to short leg but Bavuma and Wakely steadied Northants into the afternoon.Wakely played pleasantly for the second time in the game but Abbas slanted a delivery into him to win an lbw decision and then Rob Keogh edged Chris Wright to Paul Horton at first slip. Bavuma couldn’t quite see Northants to the close but the home side had enough batting in reserve to kill Leicestershire’s dreams of a late heist.

Cameron Bancroft and Marnus Labuschagne will have the chance to elbow their way into Australia’s Ashes tour party. The duo are part of a preliminary 25-man squad to face-off in a warm-up game ahead of the first Test against England starting August 1. Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis are the notable absentees. The squad will be trimmed to 16 for the series beginning August 1. Labuschagne (1057 runs at 70.46 for Glamorgan), Bancroft (698 at 46.53 for Durham) and Peter Siddle (27 wickets at 22.23 for Essex) have already presented compelling cases for selection through their performances in county cricket. If picked, Bancroft would be returning to Australia’s squad alongside David Warner and Steven Smith for the first time since the expiry of their bans in the wake of the Newlands scandal.Among other subplots will be the performance of reserve wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who by his outstanding World Cup displays has raised the possibility of being picked as a specialist batsman. The likes of Marcus Harris, Joe Burns and Kurtis Patterson will also be duelling for spots in what has now become a particularly deep field of batting candidates, also featuring Matthew Wade. The selection chairman Trevor Hohns said Bancroft’s displays for Australia prior to his ban merited another chance.”Cameron was making a fair amount of headway when he played Test cricket last for Australia and that was in South Africa,” Hohns said. “I think it’s been well documented that he was out leading run scorer in South Africa. What he’s done is he’s got on with business since he’s been able to play again, he’s playing with Durham in the County Championship, so he’s doing everything he possibly can to get himself back into consideration and back into the Australian squad.”He’s scoring runs on a pretty regular basis so he has been included in that 25-man squad along with two other players [Labuschange and Peter Siddle]. We’ve nominated 25 players, 25 doesn’t go into 16 so there’s going to be some disappointments but all we can do is try to select a squad that we think can win the Ashes in English conditions.”We’ve got all the history about what happened back home, we’ve got a little bit of what’s going on here in England at the moment with Australia A, but it’s more about the here and now and what’s going to happen in the next month or so.”Getty Images

Hohns indicated that the squad would likely include five pacemen, a back-up spin bowler and two wicketkeepers. He also hinted that his personal preference may be for more than 16 players in the final squad. With that in mind, the role of Carey as both a back-up gloveman and also a credible extra batsman may make him doubly valuable.”He’s proving himself to be a very smart cricketer,” Hohns said of Carey. “He played very well in the World Cup of course, batting wise he was very, very good, he showed calmness in a lot of different situations as well so he’s been very impressive, and of course his glovework we’ve been very impressed with for some time now so he’s progressing nicely.”I always ask for flexibility in numbers but at the moment we’re heading towards 16 at this stage and 16 I think historically has been about the right number. On the odd occasion there might’ve been one more. Doubtful that there’s been much less for an Ashes tour, but it’s quite a hectic program with five Test matches pretty close together and then of course we’ve got other players probably that will be included in the Ashes squad that have had quite an intense World Cup program.”The omission of Stoinis and Maxwell, who claimed four wickets for Lancashire on his post-World Cup return to cricket on Saturday, was an indicator that they have now fallen some distance away from Test calculations. “Let’s put it this way,” Hohns said. “We probably consider the 25 that did get chosen in this game or for this game as more in contention than those guys. It’s unfortunate but that’s just where we’re at right here and now.”Usman Khawaja’s continuing recovery from a hamstring strain will be monitored closely, though he is one the World Cup squad members now enjoying time away from the game until the 25 assemble in Southampton for the tour game. Hohns said that, having not won the Ashes in England since 2001, no compromises have been made in trying to prepare for the task ahead.”I think the preparation has been outstanding,” he said. “The organisational work that has gone into this tour, not just for the Ashes but the World Cup then straight into the Ashes and then you’ve got Australia A as well, we’re leaving no stone unturned basically in an attempt to win the Ashes in England, and it’s been a long time, there’s no doubt about that.”But I think we’re in pretty good shape at the moment. England are a pretty good side there’s no doubt about that, but we’re in reasonable shape, particularly with Smith and Warner coming back. we’re lucky right now I think to have our battery of fast bowlers fit and ready to go as well, so that’s something that hasn’t happened for a while when we’ve got a full complement of our major fast bowlers available.”Australia preliminary squad: Cameron Bancroft, Jackson Bird, Joe Burns, Alex Carey, Patrick Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Jon Holland, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, Tim Paine, Kurtis Patterson, James Pattinson, Will Pucovski, Peter Siddle, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Chris Tremain, Matthew Wade, David Warner
