Adam Zampa: Australia's T20I focus rewarded by top ranking

If the T20 World Cup does take place this year, Australia would be one of the favourites

Andrew McGlashan13-May-2020Adam Zampa believes that Australia holding the No.1-ranking in T20Is for the first time is the reward for giving the format the attention it needs.Although Australia’s climb to the top was in part due to the ICC’s annual update of their rankings – which also saw them top the Test ladder – it has come on the back of a very strong run in T20Is with seven wins out of nine matches during the 2019-2020 season, securing series victories against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa. The sequence goes back further, too, including the 2-0 victory over India last March which was sealed by Glenn Maxwell’s magnificent 113 off 55 balls in Bengaluru.ALSO READ: Adam Zampa wants to be more than a white-ball specialistDuring the recent season, the margins of victory weren’t close: ranging from seven to 10 wickets and 97 to 134 runs. They would have won all six matches at home if not for rain in Sydney against Pakistan and the only defeat was a 12-run loss in Port Elizabeth when a hesitant middle-order display undid them. With two T20 World Cups to plan for in 2020 and 2021 – although the October tournament in Australia is under threat due to the Covid-19 pandemic – the selectors moved away from seeing it as the format where key players, especially bowlers, would be rested and have also been boosted by the returns of David Warner and Steven Smith.”The emphasis we put on T20 cricket as an international team over the last couple of years has made a huge difference,” Zampa, who took 10 wickets in eight T20Is last season, said. “There was the Test format and ODI format leading up to the World Cup last year that we were focusing on but this T20 World Cup in particular has made a difference in the way we select teams, the way the scheduling looks.”I think it’s been an amazing 18 months in particular for the T20I team and we’ve got a really good balance leading up to the World Cup. It’s exciting to be a part of that.”Australia celebrate Adam Zampa’s breakthrough•AP Photo/Themba Hadebe

The T20 World Cup is the one piece of global silverware to elude Australia with their best returns being the 2010 final defeat against England in Barbados. There remains hope that the tournament later this year can still take place, although the challenge of getting 16 teams together for a global event amid the pandemic is one that may prove too great. There have been suggestions of moving it back to February next year but the knock-on effects of that are also considerable. If the tournament does proceed in October it could be a challenge for players to prepare depending on how much professional cricket is possible beforehand and there is no chance of international cricket until July at the earliest. Australia’s ODI and T20I tour of the UK that month is all-but sure not to take place as scheduled, with discussions around whether it will be shunted to September.Zampa, who has a Cricket Australia (CA) central contract and will come off annual leave on May 18, thinks some players would be able to adjust to a lack of competitive cricket but admitted he is someone who needs games under his belt. Plans are currently being drawn up, led by CA’s head of science and medicine Alex Kountouris, as to what training will look like over the next few months as states lift their Covid-19 restrictions.”Some guys could probably go straight into it like nothing has happened but personally I like to continue playing cricket,” Zampa said. “The last six weeks has been weird for me. Especially in T20 with different game situations, putting yourself under pressure. I need some game time to be ready for international cricket but we haven’t really had any messages about the World Cup so haven’t thought about preparation.””It will be a bit different to the last few years – playing IPL or county cricket – but I think once the leave period is done in a few days’ time, the message has been to train in your states for the foreseeable future and do pre-season as everyone else would.”

2011 WC final: Sri Lanka police drop corruption probe

ICC ACU says ‘no reason to doubt integrity’ of the match

Sri Lanka’s cricketers and selectors have been cleared of fixing allegations and the investigation into the 2011 World Cup final dropped, after no evidence was found to support former sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s allegations. On Friday, the ICC’s anti-corruption unit [ACU], too, said that it had “no reason to doubt the integrity” of the match, which was won by India.Kumar Sangakkara (captain of that World Cup side), Aravinda de Silva (chief selector), and opening batsman Upul Tharanga were all summoned to appear before a special investigation unit set up by Sri Lanka’s sports ministry. They were each questioned for hours. Mahela Jayawardene, who scored a hundred in that game, was also due for questioning, but the investigation was halted before he appeared before the unit.”From the three statements we’ve got, it was clear to us that the 14 points brought forward by Mahndananda Aluthgamage could not be substantiated,” Senior Superintendent of Police Jagath Fonseka told . “Although it was said that a complaint letter had also been sent to the ICC, the ICC itself has not indicated that. The ICC hasn’t opened up their own investigation either.”Aluthgamage’s allegations had largely – but not exclusively- focused on selection. In particular he had made the point that Sri Lanka had made four changes to their XI for the final. Sangakkara, Jayawardene and de Silva, however, had always maintained that those changes were precipitated by injuries to Angelo Mathews and Muttiah Muralitharan in the semi-final. Muralitharan did eventually play the final, but has since said that he was not fully fit. Mathews, the allrounder who provided balance to the XI, could not play.Aluthgamage had also alleged that Sanath Jayasuriya’s omission from the World Cup squad was suspicious. As the sports minister at the time (Sri Lankan sports ministers have sway over the selection process, under the 1972 Sports Law), Aluthgamage is understood to have tried to get Jayasuriya into the squad. Jayasuriya had been dropped for poor form in 2009, however, and had not played a single ODI in 2010 or the start of 2011. The investigators are believed to have asked de Silva at length about why Jayasuriya was left out.”All three of the statements we took provided reasonable explanations [as to how that game panned out],” Fonseka said. “They especially gave explanations as to why the team was changed. The other thing is this happened back in 2011.”That the investigation was even launched was down to anti-corruption legislature that was only passed last year. The notion that corruption that allegedly occurred years before that legislation was passed could be investigated under that Act has been a shaky legal concept in any case.Aluthgamage made the allegations in the run-up to the August 5 parliamentary elections, in which he is seeking re-election. Although he claims he has evidence in hand, no substantial proof has ever been made public. He had also said he had made a written complaint to the ICC soon after the match, detailing his suspicions. No one at the ICC recalls or the tournament organising committee has memory of such a complaint, however. As this supposed letter had been handed over to the investigators as part of Aluthgamage’s evidence, the former minister could be susceptible to an investigation himself, to determine whether that letter was fraudulent. In fact, it now appears likely that the cricketers who had been made to appear before the investigation unit will push for legal action against Aluthgamage. Not present with any evidence to support claims – ICC ACU
On Friday, Alex Marshall, general manager of ICC ACU explained why the global watchdog was not investigating the matter. “The ICC Integrity Unit has looked into the recent allegations regarding the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Final 2011,” Marshall said in a media release. “At this time, we have not been presented with any evidence that supports the claims made or which would merit launching an investigation under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.”After Althugamage made his allegations public, Marshall and his team reached out initially to the former Sri Lankan sports minister to ascertain if he had any evidence. The ACU also reached out to all the senior ICC officials involved in organising the 2011 World Cup, but none recollected Althugamage sending the ICC a complaint – written or oral – on the final.”There is no record of any letter regarding this matter sent by the then Sri Lanka Sports Minister to the ICC and senior ICC staff at the time have confirmed they have no recollection of receiving any such letter which would have led to an investigation,” Marshall said. “We have no reason to doubt the integrity of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Final 2011. We take all allegations of this nature extremely seriously and should we receive any evidence to corroborate the claims, we will review our current position.”Now the Sri Lankan police is swiftly shutting down its investigation over lack of evidence as well. Over the past few days, as cricketers were hauled in for questioning, public opinion also seemed to have strongly opposed the investigation.

Ange must cash in on forgotten Spurs man who earns more than Van de Ven

If last summer is anything to go by, then there could well be yet another mass exodus at Tottenham Hotspur this time around, with Harry Kane having been one of ten senior figures who left the club, either on loan or permanently.

The likes of Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris have since followed in 2024, with Ange Postecoglou likely to nudge further figures toward the exit door – something transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has already suggested after outlining that "several players" may be allowed to leave.

It has already been confirmed that one-time wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon is set to depart as a free agent, with the former Fulham man enduring a torrid run of injury luck following his £25m arrival back in 2019.

The Englishman may not be the only permanent departure from the full-back ranks amid interest in both Emerson Royal and Djed Spence, while a further name – who was not noted on Romano's list – should also be shown the door, in the form of Sergio Reguilon.

Reguilon's season in numbers

The £32m signing has become something of a forgotten man at N17 after spending the last two seasons away from the club on loan, the marauding left-back returning to his native Spain in 2022/23 to join Atletico Madrid, prior to his temporary stints at Manchester United and Brentford this time around.

Plucked by the Red Devils on deadline day last summer amid injuries to both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, the six-cap Spain international ultimately made just 12 appearances for Erik ten Hag's side in all competitions – failing to score or register an assist.

Manchester United's loan defender Sergio Reguilon.

The Old Trafford outfit then activated a break clause in that loan deal in January, with Reguilon subsequently sealing a return to the capital in order to join the Bees, a move that seemingly worked out well for all parties.

Despite picking up a notable red card against Burnley, the 27-year-old enjoyed an encouraging stint under Thomas Frank after picking up four assists from his 16 outings, having thrived in what looks to be his preferred wing-back berth.

The former Real Madrid asset even matches up impressively against Tottenham rival Destiny Udogie in an attacking sense, although his defensive shortcomings are there for all to see, as evidenced by the fact that he was dribbled past once per game, and recovered far fewer balls than Udogie – having been dubbed "so average it's untrue" by club insider, John Wenham.

Also dubbed the "worst of the bunch" by Wenham, it is perhaps clear why Postecoglou has not looked his way during his tenure so far, with Football Insider reporting that he will be sold this summer in order to raise funds.

How much Reguilon earns at Spurs

Although the much-maligned defender has been on loan in recent seasons, according to Capology he does pick up a healthy pay packet of around £53k-per-week when he is back at his parent club, which works out at roughly £2.7m per term.

Getting such a draining asset off the wage bill must then be a priority, particularly when considering that Reguilon even earns more than a handful of key figures in Postecoglou's squad, including Micky van de Ven.

The towering Dutchman – who arrived from Wolfsburg last summer on a £43m deal – is said to be taking home 'just' £50k-per-week despite a promising first campaign in English football, having been dubbed "one of the signings of the season" by Steph Houghton.

The versatile centre-back has notably netted three times this season for the Lilywhites, with that return more than Reguilon (two) has achieved in 67 games in total for the club.

Serge Reguilon in action for Tottenham.

That measly record is even further evidence of why the Spaniard must join the list of outgoings this summer, with Postecoglou needing to fashion the squad in his image with his own signings, rather than relying on a mish-mash of stars who have arrived under the likes of Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Nuno Espirito Santo.

Spurs must finally axe "incredible" Poch flop worth 9x less than Maddison

Matthew Mott: Kim Garth exit could push Ireland towards professionalism

The Ireland allrounder has opted for a future in Australia and could play for them when she qualifies

Daniel Brettig25-Jun-2020Australia’s coach Matthew Mott believes Kim Garth’s switch from Ireland to a deal with Victoria should be the spur to help usher in women’s professional contracts for Irish cricket to stave off the risk of losing a generation of female talent to wealthier nations. As a former member of Ireland’s coaching staff during the 2015 men’s ODI World Cup, Mott has plenty of strong relationships on both sides of the equation, and while backing Garth’s decision to pursue a fully professional future, agreed that there was growing danger that emerging nations could have their best players poached by richer set-ups, not least Australia given the pre-eminence of the WBBL as the best domestic T20 event in the world. While the Covid-19 pandemic has made life difficult for all cricket administrators, Mott was hopeful that the Garth episode would help accelerate Ireland’s move to a more fully-resourced and funded program for the women’s team, allowing players to make the game their careers without needing to venture overseas in this manner.ALSO READ: Kim Garth leaves Irish cricket for future in Australia”It’s incredibly important and maybe this is a good thing for Irish cricket – I think it might help fast-track some stuff for their professionalisation,” Mott said. “They surely don’t want to be losing good players and I know that happened in the men’s game. A number of the best Irish players were going to play for England and one ended up captaining England, so I think they’ve certainly improved in that area.”They’re building their momentum and they need to be playing against good teams and getting better all the time. It’s a difficult thing. I’m very close mates with Ed Joyce who’s the Irish coach, so I was aware of it some time ago and I think it’s disappointing personally for Irish cricket, they’ve put a lot of work in over the last two years, but obviously a cricketer’s ambitions are very important and she’s a very ambitious young player and I think it’s the best thing for her cricket at the moment. “You’ve got to back that decision, it’s a really gutsy decision to go to the other side of the world and try to follow your dream. We’ve got a great structure here and it’s very attractive for her and she knows our system quite well having been here for a few years as well. I am disappointed for Irish cricket, having coached there myself and know how difficult it is to hold on to good players, but at the end of the day she’s got to do the best thing by her and it will be really interesting to see how far she can take her cricket.”The links between Cricket Australia and Cricket Ireland are strong and multi-faceted. During the Covid-19 lockdown period, Mott and the Australia captain Meg Lanning were involved in a series of video seminars geared at aiding the Irish game, while there is also a considerable shared heritage between the two nations dating back deep into the 19th century.”They just love their cricket and that’s the thing that struck me in my time with the Irish team, just how passionate they are about the game and we just want to see them do well,” Mott said. “Kim made a decision off her own bat, there was certainly nothing from CA to try to entice her over here, but that being said we’ll always welcome good cricketers into our setup.”Garth is expected to seek permanent residency in Australia and Mott said that if she became eligible for the national side she would be treated like any other player. “I think she’s a very talented player, and when you look at the Irish team, whenever we come up against them, she’s the first name talked about If she comes over and does well, our selectors have shown they will reward performance and she’s got every opportunity that everyone else has. She’ll be a welcome player in our domestic format.”Casting his mind back to last week’s announcement of 40 redundancies across CA, Mott said that the women’s national team had been fortunate in not losing much in the way of staff or resources, even as the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane has its operations scaled back in favour of players spending more time with their own state squads.Kim Garth in action for the Perth Scorchers•Getty Images

“First and foremost, it was a really difficult week for anyone in Australian cricket,” he said. “I think we’re all hurting, we’ve seen a number of really good staff members leave our workplace, and a lot of those are life-long friendships that will still be there and hopefully one day when cricket really gets strong again and we get out of this crisis, those people are welcomed back.”In terms of the women’s program we’ve been quite fortunate, we’ve taken some hits but we’ve also just hibernated a couple of programs and hopefully when we come out of this we can re-engage. We’ve got to make better use of the resources we’ve got, our programs are going to have to be really in-sync and on-point, so we’re looking at it as a real challenge.”Mott admitted he was more concerned for cricket’s smaller nations, and budgetary decisions currently being made that might push back the development of the women’s game outside of Australia. “I worry for some of the developing nations to be honest,” he said. “For places like Sri Lanka that aren’t as established in their women’s programs, and I just hope they can hold on through this period.”The ICC are definitely trying to champion some of the developing countries to be stronger and that’s something all the big nations need to be aware of. We want a global game, we want a world game and where we can help out some of the developing countries whether it’s with our human resources or just helping in tournament play and giving them some key messages.”Having strong domestic competitions, the next frontier is India, we’d love to see an IPL get up and running and giving our players a chance to play in different conditions and experience different cultures as well.”
