Queensland and New South Wales: route to the Sheffield Shield final

The Sheffield Shield was shortened by two rounds due to Covid-19, but it still took considerable effort to reach the final

Andrew McGlashan13-Apr-2021Queensland
Beat Tasmania by an innings and 59 runs
The margin of victory was convincing, but it was not until deep into the final hour that Mitchell Swepson, who sent down 45.2 overs in the second innings, clinched the match-winning wicket after Tasmania’s lower order had threatened to hold on. Michael Neser had set the game up on the opening day with 5 for 32, which he then followed with a maiden first-class century that built on Marnus Labuschagne’s 167 to ensure a huge lead.Lost to New South Wales by one wicket
The game of the season came down to the final pair with Harry Conway surviving four balls with the scores level after Nathan Lyon had been run out. Sean Abbott held his nerve to just clear the in-field with the winning stroke. It was a high-quality nip-and-tuck encounter throughout. Labuschagne scored an opening-day hundred before vital half-centuries from Abbott and Peter Nevill meant it was almost level on first innings. Trent Copeland then produced one of the spells of summer to claim 5 for 17 off 18 overs – at one point he had 5 for 7 from 15 overs – to set up a target of 206. At 3 for 124 things looked in hand, but Swepson took his match haul to 10 for 171 and almost pulled it off for Queensland.Beat South Australia by 62 runs
Swepson was again the hero for Queensland as he clinched victory with three late wickets and 20 minutes to spare – during a marathon second-innings stint of 52 overs – after they looked like being denied in a game they dominated from start to finish. However, it was Mark Steketee who burst the game open on the final afternoon when he broke a fifth-wicket stand of 218 between Callum Ferguson and Harry Nielsen. The match had been set up by centuries from Usman Khawaja, Matt Renshaw and Jimmy Peirson before Swepson’s five-wicket haul help skittle the Redbacks for 154.Joe Burns made an outstanding century against Tasmania•Getty Images

Beat Tasmania by three wickets
Khawaja’s classy unbeaten 115 secured an impressive run chase in a match where Queensland – missing the injured Swepson – had been behind the running almost throughout. Caleb Jewell’s century gave Tasmania a handy total then Queensland collapsed from 1 for 124 to 7 for 161 before Joe Burns constructed a magnificent 171 – which was 62% of the total – to keep them within touching distance. Stekette and Xavier Bartlett struck often enough to keep the lead manageable then a stand of 137 between Labuschagne and Khawaja broke the back of the chase.Draw against Western Australia
A road of a pitch was the winner at the Gabba in a game mostly remembered for Cameron Green’s 251. There rarely looked like being a result once it was clear there wouldn’t be a chase created as Queensland batted on to 9 for 600 with hundreds from Renshaw and Bryce, while Labuschagne fell eight short of another. With a lead of 142 there was a glimmer of panic from Western Australia when they were then 4 for 67, but Hilton Cartwright and Jake Carder saw out time.Draw against Victoria
Only 76 overs were possible across the first two days at Allan Border Field where Marcus Harris’ century held Victoria together in tricky conditionsMatch abandoned against South Australia
Although the rain cleared after the first day and the new Ian Healy Oval had good drainage, the outfield could not recover from the deluge as the players were left kicking their heels.Draw against New South Wales
Either team could still have missed the final with a defeat here if Western Australia had beaten Tasmania but that scenario did not eventuate and Queensland were able to keep top spot. A reshaped New South Wales batting order responded strongly from the 32 all out against Tasmania led by Jason Sangha’s 103, but Labuschagne followed with a hundred of his own in a solid reply while Lyon toil through 48 overs for six wickets. The most significant aspect of the match became the early return of Swepson who produced a ripping leg-break in the second innings to remove Daniel Hughes.Sean Abbott’s runs have been vital throughout the season•Getty Images

New South Wales
Draw against Western Australia
A flat pitch at Park 25 was good for a few batting averages but not the chance of a result. New South Wales were unsteady at 3 for 71 but Moises Henriques and Dan Solway added 244 before Nevill and Abbott put on an unbroken 118. Green’s 197 was the dominant figure in Western Australia’s reply and when there was a chance of the Blues taking a lead, he added 137 for the eighth wicket with Matt Kelly before being given lbw three short of a double when he appeared to nick it. Abbott show superb stamina to take 6 for 89.Beat Queensland by one wicket
(see above)Beat Tasmania by 145 runs
An extraordinary comeback from New south Wales after being bundled out for 64 on the opening day. Despite a century from Jordan Silk, they managed to keep Tasmania just in sight and then set about atoning with the bat. Henriques and Nick Larkin hit hundreds to build the lead before the game was taken away by an unbroken stand of 189 between Abbott, with his maiden first-class hundred, and Mitchell Starc, who was somewhat miffed to be denied his chance of a first ton. At 3 for 153 midway through the final day, Tasmania had a chance of a draw but Lyon and Starc worked through the middle order as they lost 7 for 49.The absence of Moises Henriques leaves a big hole for New South Wales•Getty Images

Lost to Victoria by four wickets
A pitch that aided the spinners provided an enthralling, low-scoring contest at the SCG which the visitors claimed in a tense run chase despite Lyon taking his match haul to ten wickets. New South Wales had struggled to 165 on the first day, but Lyon took a Shield best 6 for 21 as Victoria lost 8 for 48 to claim a lead of just 35. However, the Blues then collapsed to 8 for 91 against the Victoria pace attack before Abbott’s 73 helped the last two wickets add 84 and set a tricky target. At 5 for 87 anything was possible, but 18-year-old Jake Fraser-McGurk played an excellent innings.Draw against Victoria
This match was also in Sydney due to a Covid-19 outbreak in Melbourne and this time New South Wales dominated, but were denied victory by Peter Handscomb’s fine century. Conway’s career-best 6 for 39 kept Victoria to 190, while Henriques’ 141 alongside Nevill’s 74 built a formidable advantage. The pitch, though, did not break up as may have been imagined and became more docile over the final two days while some time was also lost to rain.Nathan Lyon was the leading wicket-taker in the regular season•Getty Images

Beat South Australia by six wickets
New South Wales kept the game open by declaring significantly behind South Australia’s big first innings then benefited from the home side’s willingness to make a contest of it. After Kurtis Patterson’s hundred (his one significant score of the season) it needed further contributions from Nevill, Abbott and Starc to ensure New South Wales weren’t in trouble. They were then set 295 on the final day with David Warner providing a strong platform that was superbly finished off by Henriques and Abbott in a stand of 141 in 30 overs.Lost to Tasmania by 298 runs
A record-breaking collapse for New South Wales: bowled out for 32, their lowest first-class total. Jackson Bird took 7 for 18 in an innings that lasted 19.3 overs, while Abbott was unable to bat in the match after splitting his webbing on the opening day. After 2.2 overs of the innings, the scorecard was made up of five zeroes: three dismissed batsmen and two yet to score. Even with a lead of 301, Tasmania did not enforce the follow-on but it was just a matter of time. Having been left a target of 493 in two days, New South Wales slumped to 6 for 94 in their second innings.Draw against Queensland

Fabrizio Romano: Celtic have now reached agreement to sign 20 y/o on loan

Celtic are believed to have an agreement in place to sign a 20-year-old rising star on loan during the summer transfer window, according to an update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops are still pushing to complete some late transfer business, with Arne Engels one of the latest players to be linked with a summer move to Parkhead. The FC Augsburg midfielder has reportedly begun talks with Celtic over a switch, as they look to bring him in alongside attacking midfielder Mateusz Bogusz.

The latter, who is currently playing for MLS side Los Angeles FC, is a rumoured target for Brendan Rodgers before the window slams shut later this week, and has some limited experience on British shores, making one Championship appearance during a spell at Leeds United.

Former Leeds midfielder Mateusz Bogusz.

Hammarby teenager Bazoumana Toure is another player who has been backed to bolster the Hoops' options in the Scottish Premiership and Champions League this season, but Crystal Palace, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen are also thought to be in the mix.

Celtic could also look for reinforcements at the heart of their defence this week, with Sheffield United centre-back Auston Trusty continuing to be looked at as a strong option. He is a two-time capped USA international, and could give Rodgers the extra depth that he may crave in a key area of the pitch.

Celtic reach agreement over loan move

Taking to X, Romano claimed that Celtic are set to complete the loan signing of Barcelona youngster Alex Valle, having signed an extension with the La Liga side. Another update from the reporter also says a medical is scheduled on Monday, although he confirms there will be no buy option included.

Not a huge amount may be known about Valle, given his age and lack of experience, but there should always be an element of excitement when any Barca player is linked with joining the Hoops. The 20-year-old is yet to make an appearance for the senior side, but he has enjoyed 22 outings for their B team, and won a combined tally of 17 caps for Spain at Under-19 and Under-18 level.

A left-back by trade, Valle could increase the competition for places at Celtic, not only putting pressure on Greg Taylor for minutes, but also ensuring that Rodgers has the depth to rotate his squad effectively, giving them the best possible chance of success across all competitions this season.

As for the player himself, he could see this as a wonderful opportunity to experience a different league and culture, allowing him to grow as a footballer over the next 12 months, prior to returning to Barcelona as a more rounded player.

Rodgers must brutally drop Celtic man who had fewer touches than Schmeichel

The Hoops attacker did not enjoy a successful afternoon against St Mirren on Sunday.

That means the Hoops should hopefully be bringing in a player who is hungry to keep improving, which can only help them, showing his current employers that his contract extension is fully merited.

Brendon McCullum: 'I've asked time and time again for us to be more aggressive'

Coach “very disappointed” in KKR’s slow scoring, says “we’re going to have to make some changes for sure”

Saurabh Somani29-Apr-20214:01

McCullum: ‘After Shaw’s six fours, we were shell-shocked’

After the Kolkata Knight Riders sank to their fifth defeat in seven games, a “very disappointed” Brendon McCullum said personnel changes loomed, with an eye specifically on scoring quicker in the top order. The coach said what disappointed him in particular was that his batters had not been more expansive in the seven-wicket defeat to the Delhi Capitals in spite of repeated exhortations to go after the bowling. The Knight Riders’ top three of Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi cobbled together a combined 77 off 67 balls, before Prithvi Shaw slammed a 41-ball 82 in reply.”It’s very, very disappointing,” McCullum said. “I think as a player, you ask to be given freedom and confidence and loyalty when it comes to selection, to go out there and take the game on and try and be aggressive… and to try and make things happen for your team. That’s the style of play which both myself and the captain [Eoin Morgan] have asked of our players. But unfortunately we’re not quite getting that. We’re certainly not getting it in the abundance that we need.”What we saw from Prithvi Shaw tonight was the perfect template of how we want to play. You’re not always going to be able to hit every ball for four or six, but you can have the intent to do so, particularly when you’re given a free licence. It’s very difficult if you don’t play shots to score runs, and unfortunately tonight we didn’t play enough shots. It’s become a bit of a theme. A saying that I’ve used throughout my career is that ‘If you can’t change a man, change the man.’ So we’ll probably have to make some changes and try and bring in some fresh personnel who will hopefully take the game on a bit more.”Brendon McCullum was “very, very disappointed” in his batters after the loss to the Delhi Capitals•BCCI/IPL

In a clear reference to his top order, McCullum said that runs at the top against a new ball and with field restrictions in place were imperative, especially given the slow nature of the surfaces in IPL 2021, where so far teams have often found it difficult to tee off at the death.”Look, on a slow surface you’ve really got to maximise the new ball and the fielding restrictions,” he said. “One thing we have to get our heads around is that in T20 cricket, you’ve got to part from the old-school mentality of trying to find a boundary and then get a one. You’ve got to try and put some pressure back on the opposition bowlers. If you get a boundary, then look for another, and then look for another one. If you’re able to do that, then the opposition bowler is under an immense amount of pressure and normally what happens then is they don’t execute. Then you can have big overs, and that allows you to be able to build into an innings, create those partnerships and those sizeable platforms.”It’s very difficult if you’re not trying to look for boundaries for that to happen. So it’s more of an application thing than it is anything else. It’s incredibly disappointing because I’ve asked time and time again for us to be more aggressive and more expressive and take the game on, and we continue to not do it. So we’re going to have to make some changes for sure.”The Knight Riders openers – Rana and Gill – are striking at less than 125 so far in the tournament, and are in the bottom five among the 15 openers who have faced at least 40 balls in IPL 2021. On the bench, they have Venkatesh Iyer (T20 strike rate 137.64), Karun Nair (131.47), Sheldon Jackson (117.09) and Gurkeerat Singh Mann (123.74) to choose from among top-order batters. The Knight Riders think-tank had decided before the tournament that their most devastating weapon – Andre Russell – was best utilised if deployed around the 12th over. But, even though Russell has been coming in to bat as planned, he hasn’t always been able to express himself freely because a sound enough platform had not been laid. Against the Capitals, Russell walked in at 75 for 4 in the 11th over, eventually dragging the side to 154 for 6 with his big-hitting, which still proved woefully inadequate when Shaw got going.Related

“I had a conversation with Andre at the start of the season. We look at a lot of stats and facts and try to back what’s the best place for him,” McCullum said. “Ideally with the right platform, beyond 12 is what we agreed on, but there are times when he’s going to have to come in a little bit earlier. Today he came in slightly earlier. It actually allowed him to settle a little bit, but he really couldn’t play with the same freedom, because we had fallen into a bit of a hole. It was only his brutal power towards the end which allowed us to post any sort of total.”The other day he came in, the game against Chennai, the game was so far beyond us, he was able to come in and just try and take the game on. He has that ability. But I think, ideally, from 12 overs onwards is where he can do the most amount of damage with the least amount of risk. So it’s really up to the rest of our guys to provide him with a better platform rather than asking him to do too much.”The Knight Riders next match is against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 3 at the same venue.

Newcastle willing to match £52m valuation to sign "amazing" Almiron upgrade

Having missed out on signing a new right winger in the summer transfer window, Newcastle United are now reportedly willing to match the valuation of a player who would be an instant upgrade on Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies endured a nightmare summer, there's no escaping that, after failing to sign Marc Guehi and any other centre-back alternative aside from a free deal for Lloyd Kelly at the start of the window, who is also likely to be used on the left. What's more, those at St James' Park also failed to sign an upgrade on Miguel Almiron, who was linked with a move away himself, throughout the summer.

Newcastle failed with £21m bid for "great" Guehi alternative from UCL club

The Magpies ended the window without signing a central defender…

ByTom Cunningham Sep 5, 2024

Sporting director Paul Mitchell recently spoke about his first summer in charge, telling The Telegraph's Luke Edwards: "There are things we got wrong in our strategy, for sure. If we could have signed a player that we actively felt could make a really good squad better, would we? Of course we would have done.”

"Eddie was very clear and it’s not up to me after seven weeks to say, ‘We’ll do this and that’, because I’m in a supporting role. Were there options? Of course there were, as that’s the responsibility of the department and Newcastle."

Now tasked with making up for lost time in 2025 – be that in the January window or next summer – the Magpies have reportedly set their sights on an exciting target. According to reports in Spain via Football365, Newcastle are now willing to match Barcelona's €60m (£52m) price tag to sign Raphinha in 2025.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

Newcastle were reportedly in advanced talks to sign the Brazilian in the summer window, but ultimately failed to tempt Barcelona into a deal to sell their winger. Now, amid Raphinha's impressive start to the campaign, the Magpies are seemingly prepared to splash out on his signature, making the January window instantly interesting to watch.

"Amazing" Raphinha would end Howe's Almiron problem

Alongside Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, Eddie Howe lacks the same firepower on the right-hand side that Raphinha would instantly provide to replace Almiron. The former Leeds United star has enjoyed an electric start to the campaign in Spain, scoring a hat-trick against Real Valladolid last time out in a stunning 7-0 victory for Barcelona.

His stunning start follows Ben Mattinson's praise for the winger last month, in which the analyst dubbed Raphinha "amazing" at right-wing and "genuinely quality off the left too".

Following Almiron's disappointing season last time out – scoring just five goals and assisting a further three – Newcastle must find an upgrade as soon as possible if they are to compete for a place inside the Premier League's top four once again.

Howe could yet form a deadly front three of Gordon, Isak and Raphinha to fire Newcastle back on track in 2025.
