Man Utd struck gold on "wonderboy" who’s worth 2x more than Casemiro

Manchester United have had a far-from-ideal start to the 2024/25 campaign. It was a big summer transfer window at Old Trafford, where the Red Devils spent around £205.9m as per Sky Sports. However, their start to the new season certainly does not reflect the big bucks splashed by Erik ten Hag’s side.

The new campaign actually got off to a winning start for the Dutchman and his side, as they overcame Fulham at Old Trafford. United beat the Cottagers 1-0, with a goal from debutant Joshua Zirkzee sealing all three points in the Premier League’s opening game.

Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee scores vs Fulham

However, things quickly went downhill from there, and the 13-time Premier League champions suffered two defeats in a row. The first of those came at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion, who beat United 2-1 on the South Coast after a late winning goal from Joao Pedro.

Their most recent loss came against big rivals Liverpool. The Anfield side toyed with the Red Devils, eventually securing a 3-0 victory with two goals coming from Luis Diaz and one at the hands of Mohamed Salah. That was a particularly poor performance from United, but there was one player in particular who struggled, a man whose value in the past few months has rapidly declined.

Casemiro’s value in 2024

The player in question here is United’s Brazilian midfielder, Casemiro. The 32-year-old has been a shadow of his former self in 2024 and is far from the destroyer in midfield who helped Real Madrid win five Champions League titles between 2014 and 2022.

Indeed, that has led to plenty of criticism from the wider media, with former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher one of those to criticise the former Brazil captain. Carragher famously said United’s number 18 must “leave the football before the football leaves you” after United lost 4-0 away to Crystal Palace last season.

His performance against Liverpool last Sunday was perhaps the icing on the cake on what is a sad decline by someone who was once one of the best midfielders in Europe.

Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst gave Casemiro a rating of 1/10 following his showing against the Reds, claiming it was “one of the worst” first halves of football by a United player at Old Trafford. He was hauled off at half-time.

His numbers from the game certainly reflect this. As per Sofascore, the 32-year-old completed just 70% of his passes, won only two from five ground duels, was dribbled past twice and made two errors leading to a goal. It was a poor performance.

With that in mind, it is perhaps unsurprising that the former Madrid midfielder’s value has dropped so much. According to Transfermarkt, he is now valued at just £16.8m, a far cry from the high of £67.5m he was valued at in 2020 whilst still a Los Blancos player.

Despite his steep decline, the Brazilian is still a player who Ten Hag has trusted throughout his tenure at Old Trafford. The 32-year-old has pulled on that famous red shirt 87 times, scored 12 goals and registered nine assists along the way.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

There is no doubt that the fast decline of United’s number 18 has impacted the team, and it is certainly sad to see such a legend of the modern game look a shadow of his former self. He has now slipped far down the list of highest-valued players at Old Trafford, and there has been something of a changing of the guard.

The next generation of Red Devils stars have now begun to overtake Casemiro, including Alejandro Garnacho.

Alejandro Garnacho’s value in 2024

It has been something of an astronomic rise to the top for 20-year-old Argentina international Garnacho. The winger has become a crucial player under Ten Hag and has since become a full international with the 2022 World Cup winners. The dynamic winger was part of Lionel Scaloni’s squad that won the 2024 Copa America.

Alejandro Garnacho

In total, he has played 90 times for the Red Devils so far, an impressive number of appearances at such a young age. He has scored 19 goals and has 11 assists to his name, with the 2023/24 campaign in particular proving to be successful for the youngster, his best yet in terms of goals and assists.

The youngster has already scored some crucial goals for United so far, despite being so early in his Old Trafford career. The wing wizard scored United’s opener in both the FA Cup Final and the Community Shield, both against Manchester City.

The cumulation of the United number 17’s impressive performances in Red so far has led to a prestigious nomination for the Kopa Trophy. Garnacho is in with a shot at winning the award for Europe’s best young player, along with fellow United academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo, and the likes of Lamine Yamal.

Given the impressive start Garnacho has made to his Red Devils career, it is no surprise he is so highly valued now. The 20-year-old is worth more than double that of Casemiro, with his current value as per Transfermarkt standing at £37.9m.

Not only does that show just how good the youngster has been for Ten Hag’s side, but it also represents superb profit margins for United. They paid an incredibly low fee to acquire his services from Atletico Madrid back in 2020, just £420k, as per the Manchester Evening News.

Described as a “wonderboy” by football scout Antonio Mango, the 19-year-old certainly seems to be a superb investment for United so far. He has already shot up in value thanks to his impressive performances, and could even receive an award as a result.

It has certainly been a brilliant piece of business from the Red Devils, and Garnacho continues to repay their faith.

Daniel Bell-Drummond fifty enough as Essex collapse before the rain

Harmer takes four for Essex but bad weather has final say in local rivalry

Daniel Bell-Drummond’s fifty kept Kent on top against Essex•Getty Images

Daniel Bell-Drummond hammered 50 off 29 balls as Kent Spitfires beat Essex Eagles by 18 runs on DLS – after lightning and then rain brought an early end to the Vitality Blast match.Bell-Drummond clubbed his third fifty of the competition during an 89-run stand for the first wicket with Zak Crawley. The Spitfires endured two collapses to slump to 167 for 9 as Simon Harmer claimed 4 for 26, including his 50th Blast wicket for Essex, and Dan Lawrence a county T20 record of four catches in the innings. But 31 for 4, including two scalps for Matt Milnes, in five overs meant the Eagles were short of the DLS target of 59 – handing Kent their sixth victory of the campaign.Bell-Drummond and Crawley got the Spitfires off to a flyer having been stuck in by Harmer on a used hybrid track.Crawley received two lives, dropped on 1 and 14, as Bell-Drummond slapped Jamie Porter for two sixes – the visitors pummelling 82 off the Powerplay. But after two miserly overs, Kent collapsed in sensational style with five wickets lost for 22 runs in 25 balls, as spin took over.Nijjar, who eventually took 1 for 13 in an ungenerous spell, celebrated with Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Sii’ leap after bowling Crawley for 43, before Joe Denly was caught by Lawrence at deep midwicket trying to replicate the six he had struck the previous ball and Jack Leaning was stumped off Harmer.Lawrence turned snarer when Bell Drummond – who had reached a 28-ball half-century – spliced to a sprawling Harmer and Alex Blake was caught behind.Newly-contracted Darren Stevens and Jordan Cox resuscitated the innings with a 44-run stand, with Stevens clubbing a pair of sixes, but another wicket furry ended the innings – this time four wickets falling in 16 balls.Stevens, Cox and Qais Ahmed were all caught by Lawrence and Matt Milnes was bowled by Jimmy Neesham with the last ball.Unlike the Spitfires, the Eagles did not pump runs early on. Will Buttleman was beaten by Milnes’ pace and bounce to be caught behind and Adam Wheater was leg-before attempting to sweep Joe Denly.Michael Pepper chipped a Milnes slower ball to mid-off and former Spitfire Jimmy Neesham edged Fred Klaassen thickly to gully. With lightning striking behind the Hayes Close End and then rain the game was called off after the fifth over – the minimum needed to create a result.

Angus Fraser moved from director of cricket role in Middlesex restructuring

Former England seamer said challenging period at London club had “taken its toll”

Angus Fraser has stepped aside from his role as director of cricket at Middlesex as part of a restructuring of management at the club. Fraser will move to overseeing the academy and county age-group squads, with men’s team head coach, Stuart Law, now reporting directly into the chief executive.Fraser took over at his old club as managing director of cricket in 2009, having spent several years as the cricket writer at the , and saw the club lift the County Championship in 2016 for the first time since his playing days in the early 1990s.However, Middlesex were relegated the following season and struggled to adapt to life back in the second tier. Several members of the title-winning side have moved on, including Dawid Malan and Nick Gubbins in recent seasons, while success in limited-overs cricket has also been sporadic. This summer, Middlesex finished bottom of Group Two of the Championship, with one win from ten, and second-bottom of the Vitality Blast South Group.Related

Middlesex chief executive Goatley steps down due to ill health

Fraser said that the recent challenging period had “taken its toll”, but was proud of his record in bringing through homegrown players – with six academy graduates given their first-team debuts over the last two seasons.”I have been enormously proud to hold the role I have with this great club, but the time is right for change,” he said. “I have found the last 16 months incredibly challenging on and off the field of play, and I could not have given more or shown more care for the club than I have, but it has taken its toll on me.”We all know that results this season have not been good enough, but I believe there are many reasons to be optimistic about the future. In the last few years Middlesex have chosen to invest in and develop its own home-grown cricketers, which can be seen from the teams that have represented the club. It is the right thing for a club like Middlesex to do and something we should be proud of.”These young men are benefitting enormously from the opportunities they are being given and I believe a number of them will become fine cricketers; players that will represent Middlesex and England with pride and will entertain cricket lovers for many years to come.”It is with a heavy heart that I step aside from this position, and I would like to thank all those that have helped and supported me over the years. I still believe I have a huge amount to give Middlesex Cricket and I look forward to helping the club in any way I can.”Law started work under Fraser in 2019, but saw the club finish eighth in Division Two in his first season and there has been minimal progress since. They won two games out of five in the Bob Willis Trophy last year, and finished fourth in the truncated Blast South Group, before results dipped again. The club has also experienced financial difficulties owing to the pandemic and the discovery of a historical administrative error in paying pension contributions. Richard Goatley, Middlesex’s chief executive since 2015, stepped down last month due to ill health.Andrew Cornish, Middlesex’s acting chief executive, said: “There is no hiding from the fact that performances on the pitch over the past couple of seasons have not met the expectations of the players, the coaches, the board and most importantly our members.”Like many organisations we face challenging financial times due to the pandemic, so never has it been more important to nurture homegrown local talent, whilst making strategic external signings. The board and I believe this new structure will provide the focus and clarity the club needs at this time.”I would like to personally thank Angus for all he has done for Middlesex Cricket to this point, for his commitment to the role and for his dedication to the club, and I am very much looking forward to continuing to work closely with him as we move forward.”

DCL would love him: Friedkin considering amazing Dyche successor at Everton

After a torrid season so far, which has seen them Everton to 19th in the Premier League table, their fans might finally have some good news to celebrate.

Indeed, the Toffees are believed to be close to getting new owners at the club, after months of unhappy protesting against their current majority owner Farhad Moshiri.

The BBC, along with other major news outlets in England, have recently reported that The Friedkin Group has reached an agreement to buy Farhad Moshiri’s majority 94% stake in Everton for a whopping fee of £400m.

It is a deal that will lead to great change for Everton, which could even include a new manager.

Everton target former England manager

According to reports, the Toffees’ new owners could replace current boss Sean Dyche with the recently departed England manager Gareth Southgate.

After failing at the final hurdle of the European Championships for the second consecutive time, the former Three Lions boss parted ways with the FA and is yet to take up a new role.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Southgate’s only club job to date is that of Middlesbrough between June 2006 and October 2009 but according to GIVEMESPORT, the new prospective Toffees owner Friedkin has ‘spoken about Southgate as an ambitious option to potentially succeed Dyche’ at Goodison Park.

Sacking the former Burnley boss seems like the easy decision for the Toffees’ potential new owners to make. They are languishing in 19th, with just one point on the board and the joint most goals conceded in the top flight, 14.

Why Southgate would be a good appointment

The former England manager is someone who split opinion during his time at the helm of the Three Lions. Whatever your view on Southgate, who was described as “phenomenal” by journalist Mark Douglas, there is no doubt that his more pragmatic approach could be just what the Toffees could do with at the minute.

He is a great defensive coach, and that has even been pointed out by opponents in the past, as recently as Cody Gakpo ahead of the Euro 2024 semi-final.

The Netherlands winger said Southgate’s England “have a lot of quality, but they play defensively”. Given the Merseyside outfit are so leaky at the back, that defensive approach could be what they need. It got his England side results, including two Euros finals, 2020 and 2024, and a World Cup semi-final in 2018.

His overall record as England boss also reflects such an approach. In 102 matches at the helm for the 1966 World Cup winners, the former Middlesbrough boss conceded just 82 goals, a superb record.

However, it is not just defensive and pragmatic football that the 54-year-old would bring to the table if he took over at Goodison Park. His side has been known to form dangerous patterns of play which do have results.

Look at Luke Shaw’s goal in the Euro 2020 final, one of the high points during Southgate’s Three Lions tenure, which can be seen below. Note the maximum width on offer from the wing-backs, the way Harry Kane drops deep to drag defenders with him and create space, and the way they attack the box with crosses. They are all features of Southgate’s England.

Above all, what the former England boss was known for during his time with the national team was the superb atmosphere.

He is a superb motivator and created a positive environment designed to make players feel comfortable and keen to play for their country. The Guardian journalist Jonathan Wilson suggested during Euro 2024 that Southgate is “perhaps rather better at the management side of football management than the football”.

This sort of environment could work in the favour of Everton, and get the best out of their stars such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Everton centre-forward has already thrived under the 54-year-old for the Three Lions. He has 11 caps and four goals to his name and was a member of the Euro 2020 squad.

If Southgate can get the striker firing in a short space of time with England, imagine what he can do for a longer amount of time at Goodison Park. It feels like he has untapped potential at the Toffees, with a superb skillset but just 70 goals in 252 games; the 54-year-old could get him, and his teammates, playing at their absolute best, in an optimal environment.

This appointment could be a stroke of genius from Freidkin, and the Toffees could keep survival hopes well and truly alive of they appoint the former England boss; a pragmatic results-getter and a genius motivator.

Ange’s 8/10 Spurs star was just as unplayable as Maddison vs Brentford

Tottenham Hotspur got back to winning ways in the Premier League after a disappointing defeat in last Sunday’s North London Derby. They secured all three points by beating Brentford 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, despite going 1-0 down thanks to a first-minute Bryan Mbeumo goal.

It was not long before the Lilywhites were back on level terms, however, and it was a moment to rejoice for Dominic Solnake. He got his first goal in a Spurs shirt to draw his side level just seven minutes after Thomas Frank’s side took the lead.

Just 20 minutes after Solanke’s first goal for the club, Ange Postecolgou’s side went into the lead. Welsh winger Brennan Johnson scored his second goal in a week after he got a late winner against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup. James Maddison sealed the win in the 85th minute, with the second and third goals being assisted by captain Son Heung-min.

There were certainly some standout performers from the Lilywhites, not least Maddison, who was impressive aside from his goal.

Maddison’s stats vs. Brentford

England international Maddison was one of the stars of the show for Postecolglou’s side at on Saturday afternoon. As well as his late goal, the 27-year-old pulled the strings in midfield and was also superb out of possession.

His goal was certainly well taken; the Englishman latched onto a pass from his captain, Son, and ran through one-on-one with Mark Flekken, cutely dinking the ball over Brentford’s number one to seal the points for his side.

His stats on Sofascore demonstrate perfectly how well he played. The former Leicester City man had 81 touches of the ball and an 88% pass accuracy.

He created three chances, and won an incredible ten of his 18 ground duels, showing it is not just his ability with the ball that makes him a crucial player for Spurs.

Football London journalist Alasdair Gold was also clearly impressed with Maddison’s efforts. He gave the attacking midfielder a 10/10 rating, claiming it was ‘arguably his best performance in a Spurs shirt’, before explaining how he proved to be a nuisance for the Bees, given he was ‘constantly twisting, turning and creating’.

There is no doubt that Maddison was very impressive, and he was not alone. There was perhaps another player who was just as good against Brentford, Spurs’ number seven Son.

Son’s stats vs. Brentford

The Spurs captain has been in superb form this season and added two assists to the two goals he previously had. The 32-year-old proved to be his side’s difference maker, with his assists providing the goals from which they won the game.

Indeed, his assists were both smart passes. The pass for Johnson’s goal which gave Spurs the lead, he found the Welsh winger in space, who proceeded to drive at the Brentford defence and fire low and hard across the goalkeeper. The pass for Maddison was a smart ball through the legs of Ethan Pinnock; the Spurs number 10 did the rest.

The attacker was given an 8/10 by Gold for his performance against the Bees. He was praised by the Football London journalist, who explained he was ‘always a threat’ at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The stats from Son’s performance also suggest he was impressive. The South Korean had 46 touches, and a pass accuracy of 86%. Impressively, the Spurs skipper made a staggering seven key passes and provided two big chances, to go along with his pair of assists.

He also played 11 matches in the T20 Dhaka Premier League, but the injury forced him to miss the Super League phase of the competition. He went on to miss the one-off Test against Zimbabwe earlier this month, before saying that he would “manage” the injury and play the ODI series, chiefly because it is part of the World Cup Super League. The decision to take time off came following a recommendation from Dr David Young, the Melbourne-based orthopedic surgeon, who many Bangladesh cricketers, including Iqbal and Mashrafe Mortaza, have consulted over the years.Australia are expected to arrive in Dhaka next week to play five T20Is, scheduled from August 2 to 8. New Zealand are likely to play three or five T20Is in Dhaka starting early September, before England arrive in October to play three ODIs and three T20Is.
