United suffered their fourth loss in their opening nine Premier League games on Sunday, and in the end, it was the final straw as the United hierarchy announced this Monday morning that Erik ten Hag is no longer the manager.

The Dutchman has been in charge of the Red Devils for two and a half years, during which he won two trophies, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. The club released a statement thanking Ten Hag for his services at Old Trafford: “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”

The Red Devils are now beginning their search for a permanent replacement, with managers such as Ruben Amorim, Xabi Alonso, and Julian Nagelsmann all being linked with the role in the last week or so. Xavi has also been linked with a move to United, and there has now been a major development in a potential move.

Spanish reporter Balague has taken to X and has revealed that the stance of Xavi has not changed; he plans to wait until the summer before taking on a new job. The Spaniard has been out of work since leaving Barcelona at the end of the season, and he emerged as an option to replace Ten Hag at the end of last week.

However, Balague has revealed that Xavi still wants to take a year’s sabbatical and then start a new project in the summer, further adding that he has not heard from United at this stage. It was reported last week that a meeting led by Omar Berrada was held in Barcelona as United looked to discuss a potential move, but it seems they will have to see out the rest of the campaign under Van Nistelrooy if Xavi is their top target.

Liverpool just about got over the line in the Premier League this Saturday as Arne Slot’s side showed grit and determination by the bucket load to overcome Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1.

Many of the passionate Reds supporters packed into Anfield must have been fearing the worst as the clock ticked down and Ferdi Kadioglu’s strike was the only moment of action separating the two sides, but the table-toppers found a way to clinch the three points via a quickfire Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah double.

According to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, AFC Bournemouth ace Antoine Semenyo is being looked at as one potential Salah successor, with Thomas stating that the Reds are being ‘prudent’ in terms of mapping out viable replacements for the 32-year-old.

ESPNcricinfo understands that Higgins handed in his resignation late on Sunday night.The timing of the decision comes just days after USA Cricket announced their first ever bilateral series on home soil against a Full Member nation with a two-T20I-and-three-ODI tour by Ireland set to take place over the Christmas holidays. However, talk has been around for some time that Higgins could potentially be lured back to working for the ICC following the departure of Manu Sawnhey as CEO. Despite the suddenness of his resignation, ESPNcricinfo understands that Higgins had offered to resign on a number of occasions during his tenure due to regular clashes with members of the USA Cricket board of directors. The tumultuous nature of administrative affairs also has not ceased since USA Cricket took over as the official governing body from the expelled USA Cricket Association (USACA). USACA was banished by the ICC in 2017 with USA Cricket taking over in January 2019.Higgins played a key role in writing the new constitution in his then role as ICC general counsel and chief operating officer prior to coming on board with USA Cricket. However, the constitution which he helped author has been a source of continuing governance issues reminiscent of the USACA era. USA Cricket has not held general elections since February 2020. A lawsuit was filed by two board members against Higgins and five other board members over the voting and membership registration processes. The suit was dismissed in July by a Colorado circuit court judge but elections have still not taken place.The USA Men’s set up also went through a rocky management transition around the time of Higgins’ arrival. Pubudu Dassanayake resigned as coach just months after USA secured ODI status after an internal power struggle. Dassanyake’s replacement, Kiran More, only lasted a few months before going back to commitments in India. James Pamment, who was an assistant under More, stayed on as an interim head coach beginning in October 2019 for three tours before blasting the USA Cricket administration on his way out. Former Karnataka captain and head coach J Arunkumar soon took over the men’s role after Pamment.Things appeared more stable after April when USA Cricket launched its first domestic events following the start of the Covid pandemic. However, the contrasting fortunes of both sides only tell half the story, with Villa boss Unai Emery admitting that Spurs deserve more points from their performances this season.

Karl Hein could be tempted to join Tottenham from Arsenal

Other reports have claimed that Spurs are prepared to bid for Hein, so perhaps this is one worth watching. Despite his very young age for a goalkeeper, Hein already boasts 34 outings for his country and has plenty of time to surpass a century of international caps with ease.

Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar has also called him an “exciting” and “popular” player at the club.
