Scored 4 v Klopp: Liverpool plot to sign "electric" £25m Salah replacement

Sometimes, a result in football shifts a mood dramatically. Some might point back over the past six months. Others could counter the point with evidence of Arne Slot’s incredible start to life at the helm, sending Liverpool into the driving seat for the two biggest prizes.

But football doesn’t work that way. Tottenham Hotspur beat Liverpool on Wednesday evening and they beat them soundly. So what, Lucas Bergvall’s goal was enabled by contentious officiating that is becoming a staple in this fixture, in this stadium.

The fact is, Liverpool looked leggy and sapped, with Slot’s mastermind tactics falling short this time, perhaps due to a lack of rotation across the campaign that is now catching up with a side that has performed at full throttle and defied expectations in doing so.

In the press-focused overtures of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup defeat – a 1-0 loss that still leaves the Reds with a great chance of overturning the deficit and moving to the final stage – Slot claimed that he is confident in his squad’s quality and is not actively looking to make signings this month.

That’s a boring and expected response from a Premier League manager, but it’s one that Slot needed to make, for Liverpool will only act if the perfect opportunity arises.

Has that dream chance emerged?

Liverpool tempted to seal stunning Jan signing

As per Football Insider, Liverpool have been informed that a bid worth roughly £25m would be enough to convince Bayern Munich to part with Leroy Sane this winter.

Leroy Sane for Bayern Munich

Sane is out of contract at the end of the season and has been locked in protracted negotiations for an extension, but he could return to the Premier League with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United all interested.

The winger turns 29 in a few days and thus would not be the typical FSG-type signing, but he’s durable, athletic and incisive, and could be a unique opportunity to complete Slot’s frontline.

Sane has previously confirmed that he would not prioritise dealings with other clubs this month, but as January rumbles on, so too do suitors like Liverpool grow in confidence.

What Leroy Sane would bring to Liverpool

Liverpool have been playing against the backcloth of Jurgen Klopp’s shocking departure this season, with many expecting Anfield to fall like many other giants at the end of a dynasty.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

But they haven’t. Liverpool are first-placed in the Premier League and Champions League tables, firm favourites on home soil and confident on the continent as they gear up for the knockout rounds.

Sane is a tried-and-tested winner on English shores, endowed with the technical and physical attributes that could see him thrive as one more member of Liverpool’s exciting attack. Indeed, he’s already scored four goals against Klopp’s Reds from just five Premier League meetings.

Though he’s been in and out of the starting line-up under Vincent Kompany this year, Sane reiterated his standing as one of Europe’s finest wingers last season, producing performances that show more roundedness than, say, Mohamed Salah.

That’s not to say he’s on the Egypt sensation’s level, but it would bring something a little different to Slot’s system. Salah flattered to deceive as Liverpool fell to defeat against Spurs, peripheral and garbled in his efforts, skewing wide with both shots, failing his one attempted dribble and creating only one key pass, as per Sofascore.

Sane – who was dubbed “electric” by Gary Neville – might even be a good shout for Salah’s heir, insofar as a player who can operate in the 32-year-old’s position and provide Liverpool with an extra layer of quality to keep things chugging away across multiple positions.

He certainly has the traits to do so, with new England manager Thomas Tuchel saying this of his countryman’s talent:

With Federico Chiesa lacking fitness and fluency in Liverpool’s system, a player like Sane might have been perfect for that match, widening the scope of Liverpool’s frontline and adding that final bit of quality for matches such as the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Sane actually ranks among the top 14% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 10% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref, underscoring mechanics that speak of his suitability at Liverpool.

After all, the number-crunching site reveal that Liverpool’s Luis Diaz is the Germany international’s most similar player.

The 27-year-old is one of the biggest winners from the managerial baton pass last summer, hitting 12 goals and three assists from 26 matches for Liverpool this season, the recipient of praise from correspondent James Pearce for Slot having “taken the Colombian’s game to the next level.”

Diaz isn’t old but he’s no spring chicken, but that proves that Sane could return to English football and unearth latent qualities that would shape him into a brilliant and integral part of Liverpool’s frontline.

Leroy Sane celebrates for Germany

Liverpool are not ill-equipped in their fight for silverware, but the fact remains that few – if any – foresaw such remarkable progress in Slot’s first season.

There was a general air of frustration as Red supporters trickled out of N17 like fallen winter rain, but it’s still only half-time against the Lilywhites.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It’s only half-time regarding the campaign, to be honest, and Liverpool must act to hand their team the best chance of making it a grand slam finish. Salah might be the best player in the world right now, but Sane could add one more dimension.

Washington Sundar takes four on debut to put Lancashire on top

Washington Sundar marked his County Championship debut for Lancashire by taking four wickets – including one with his second ball of the day – on a sweltering opening day against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.Rob Keogh and Lewis McManus both scored half-centuries to put the heat back on Lancashire’s bowlers after the visitors had threatened to run through Northants’ batting. Some tight and disciplined bowling from Lancahire’s attack had reduced Northants to 124 for 5 in temperatures approaching 40 degrees, Will Williams picking up two scalps. But Keogh led the counter-attack, striking six boundaries as he passed 5,000 career runs in first-class cricket. He found a willing partner in McManus and the pair shared a 77-run partnership in 18 overs to take Northants past 200.Related

Lancashire made further inroads before the close as Washington finished the day with figures of 4 for 69. He removed Keogh thanks to a stunning one-handed slip catch from Luke Wells, while Tom Taylor was trapped lbw attempting a reverse-sweep.McManus reached his fourth half-century of the season shortly before the close as.Northamptonshire finished on 218 for 7.”I think I bowled well with some good lines, and [there were] a couple of amazing catches as well,” Washington said. “I feel very good coming over here. Making my debut for Lancashire is a huge thing for me. Getting my cap in the morning from Mark [Chilton] is a great thing. The boys were really supportive. They fielded very well as well, so I’m feeling very good.”I’m sure there’s going to be a huge learning for me and I want to give back a lot for Lancashire. They’ve shown faith in me and I want to perform my very best and win a lot of games for them and keep them happy with a lot of good performances. I’m looking forward to understanding myself more with the red ball especially in these kinds of conditions and coming up against different a set of players with different styles.”Obviously the conditions are quite different from what it is in India and a few other places. I’m looking forward to learning a lot about the culture with the kind of cricket that’s played over here and seeing lots of different styles of batsmen and bowlers and learn more about cricket as well. I think I’ve brought some sun from my home!”Rob Keogh made a useful half-century•Getty Images

Earlier on a day reduced to 72 overs because of the extreme heat, Northamptonshire’s top order failed to capitalise after winning the toss and deciding to bat, despite most batters getting good starts.New red-ball captain Will Young saw off the new ball but fell cheaply for two to Washington’s second delivery when the batter edged behind off an attempted cut shot.Ricardo Vasconcelos, who stood down as captain ahead of this game, survived a scare in the first over when he edged behind, but was soon into his work, driving down the ground for four and playing through extra cover for another boundary. He had moved onto 23 when he survived a strong appeal when Luke Wood got one to nip back. The left-arm pacer got his man in his next over though when Vasconcelos flashed loosely outside off stump and steered the ball straight to second slip. It was a testing, fiery spell either side of lunch from Wood who troubled the batters by pitching the ball up, mixed in with some well-directed short deliveries.Emilio Gay, fresh from a century at Canterbury last week, made the most of the fast outfield with five boundaries before lunch. He also stepped down the pitch to dispatch Washington high into the Lynn Wilson Stand.Northamptonshire went into lunch on 63 for 2 but scoring slowed considerably after the interval in the face of some disciplined Lancashire bowling which soon reaped rewards when Procter was adjudged lbw to Williams for 19, struck on the pads attempting to work a ball to leg. Williams picked up a second wicket when Gay drove loosely and Rob Jones took a sharp catch at second slip.Keogh played positively from the outset. He got off the mark with a well-timed clip off his toes for four and although he played and missed consecutive balls from Williams, he was severe on the slow bowlers. He played a perfectly timed back-foot punch for four off Washington and then smashed two deliveries from Matt Parkinson through extra cover. He combined with Ryan Rickleton in a stand of 43 but the South African international fell on the stroke of tea for 22 when Washington rapped him on the pads as he played back in his crease. McManus was equally aggressive against Parkinson, sweeping him for four and smashing him down the ground for two further boundaries. But Washington duly made the breakthrough to leave Lancashire on top. McManus, who struck Wells down the ground for six in the closing overs, will be key if Northants are to try to push on towards 300 in the morning.

Laxmi Ratan Shukla has been appointed as the head coach of the senior Bengal side for the upcoming season. He succeeds Arun Lal, who stepped down from the post earlier this month.”It’s a new responsibility and I will give my best like I did when I used to play for Bengal,” Shukla, 41, was quoted as saying in a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) release on Tuesday.”I like taking new challenges. All the past coaches for Bengal did a superb job for the team. We have come close to winning trophies in the past but we’ll have to climb all the way again to reach the top in the new season.”My motto is everyone can and everything is possible. I want everyone to believe in themselves. We will have to develop the art of holding onto our nerves when the situation is tough. All players who have reached this level are all capable. It’s a new year, new season and we are hoping for the best.”Bengal were runners-up in 2019-20 in Ranji Trophy and bowed out of the semi-final earlier this year. They had a rather underwhelming white-ball season in 2021-22, bowing out of the quarter-final in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy while missing out on the knockouts in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy.””The decision is taken by all the office bearers unanimously as we selected the veteran as the most deserving among the other reputed contenders who were up for the slot,” Avishek Dalmiya, the CAB president, said.”I am very hopeful that under him Bengal cricket would reach greater heights as we all know his commitment for Bengal cricket. He can connect with the players very smoothly.”Meanwhile, former head coach of India women’s national side, WV Raman was appointed as the batting consultant while Saurasish Lahiri will continue as the assistant coach of Bengal.Raman was previously head coach of Bengal in 2011-12. Under him they won the Vijay Hazare trophy in 2012 by beating Mumbai, a game in which Shukla made a match-winning century.Bengal will be without Wriddhiman Saha, who will play for Tripura in the 2022-23 season.

Harrison upgrade: Everton eye £25m ace who made Van Dijk’s life "very hard"

Sometimes, action needs to be taken in the Premier League. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has – rightly – been hit with plenty of criticism this season, having gone 16 matches without a single goal contribution for a struggling Everton side.

While the non-committal striker has been dismal for large portions of the campaign, he’s hardly been helped by his playmakers, with Everton actually the least creative team in the division this season.

David Moyes has a towering task on his hands, but it’s not insurmountable. New owners, The Friedkin Group, simply need to invest this month, with a new winger being targetted alongside a centre-forward.

Everton eyeing Harrison upgrade

Turkish newspaper Hurriyet – translated by Sport Witness – have confirmed that Everton are in the running for Galatasaray star Baris Alper Yilmaz, albeit with a host of Premier League rivals sniffing around too.

Aston Villa, Newcastle United and West Ham United are all prepared to tussle for the prized winger, who Gala have priced at €30m (£25m) after laughing off initial bids totalling €20m (£17m).

However, the 24-year-old principally plays off the right flank and could be enticed by Everton’s need for a star member in that position. Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom, plainly, aren’t cutting the mustard.

Why Everton want Baris Alper Yilmaz

A little-known player across Europe before Euro 2024 in Germany, Yilmaz made quite the impression with Turkey last summer, earning praise from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk after he made it “very hard” for him to defend against, the Netherlands star acknowledging his tricks and fleet-footedness.

Turkey were knocked out of the prestigious competition in the quarter-finals, losing 2-1 to the Dutch after an enthralling contest, but Yilmaz stood out across their five matches, averaging 5.8 successful duels and 1.6 dribbles per game, as per Sofascore, while also placing one key pass each match.

He’s since been in fine fettle in the Turkish Super Lig, instrumental as first-placed Galatasaray mount a title charge under Okan Buruk.

Baris Yilmaz

Ten goals from 18 appearances certainly constitutes a reputation as a goalscoring winger, especially as he’s created four big chances and averaged 1.6 dribbles per game too.

Without question, he’d be an upgrade on Harrison for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign, with the on-loan Everton star enduring a torrid season in the Premier League, yet to score or assist over 18 outings, equating to 1,001 minutes in total.

The 28-year-old has also only managed to create three big chances while averaging 0.6 dribbles per game, with a measly success rate of 32%.

The Athletic have confirmed this month that Everton are seeking new forms of firepower on the flanks, and Yilmaz would be the electric option capable of steering the club away from the drop zone.

It would be unwise to cut Harrison’s loan spell short and send him back to Leeds United, but in Yilmaz, an exciting option could arrive and trump him to the starting spot.

Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali outgun South Africa despite Tristan Stubbs' heroics

Jordan nails key over as Bristol hosts a six-laden contest in opening T20I

Firdose Moonda27-Jul-2022

Jonny Bairstow hit a career-best 90 and Moeen Ali scored England’s fastest T20I fifty as the hosts racked up their second-biggest score in the format in a high-scoring clash. As a result, South Africa were asked to complete their highest successful chase and stayed in it until the 18th over, thanks to Tristan Stubbs’ first international innings in his third match. He scored a 28-ball 72 and shared in stands of 65 with Heinrich Klaasen and 50 with David Miller but it was not quite enough.Bairstow continued a golden 2022, which has been headlined by four Test centuries, and shared in two explosive stands. He put on 71 in 45 balls with Dawid Malan but that was just the start. Bairstow and Moeen plundered 101 in 35 balls, the second-fastest century stand in a T20I, at a rate of 18.17. In the process, England hit 18 sixes, their most in a T20I. South Africa responded with half that number, eight from Stubbs’ bat.In hindsight, South Africa may blame their fielding display for their defeat in this match. They dropped Bairstow three times, two of them simple catches, which will lead to questions about their ability to handle pressure. The same could be asked of their attack, who appeared spooked by the short, straight boundaries, bowled too short, and lost their shape. Andile Phehlukwayo conceded the second-most runs by a South African in a T20I and Lungi Ngidi picked up the most expensive five-for, a career-best 5 for 39.South Africa may have been stunned, more so when they were reduced to 7 for 2 in the second over of the reply. But Reeza Hendricks showed some mettle with his eighth T20I fifty and Stubbs proved the find of the night, albeit it not enough to get a win.Are we worried about Jason Roy? A question that seems moot given the way England batted, but let’s go there. Roy has only scored one fifty in nine T20I innings this year, and has been dismissed in single figures five times, including today. Ngidi’s slower ball has had the better of several batters in the last few months and he delivered a particularly skilful one in his second over which tricked Roy into thinking he could heave over the off-side. He didn’t account for the lack of pace, was through the shot early and ended up only top-edging an ugly swipe to be caught at point. England were 41 for 2 in the fifth over.Bairstow bashes it It looks like those lunges with Sam Curran sitting on his shoulders have helped Bairstow build extra strength for his T20 game. He moved on from Roy’s dismissal by targeting South Africa’s spinners. His first boundary came with a pull off Keshav Maharaj through mid-wicket and his second, a smash through cow corner that was hit so hard Heinrich Klaasen didn’t pick it up as it sailed over his head. Shamsi took a tonking his next over too, as Dawid Malan hit him over extra cover and then Bairstow flat-batted him for four and swung him into the stands on the legside to take England to halfway on 98 for 2. Bairstow went on to his eighth T20 fifty, off 36 balls, in his first T20I of the year. It’s also Bairstow’s first fifty in ten T20I innings, and he had only been given one (tough) chance at that point, Bairstow went on to be dropped on 56, 72 and 77.Tristan Stubbs kept South Africa fighting in the first T20I•Getty Images

Welcome to it, Tristan Stubbs Picked as a big-hitting batter, Stubbs had yet to face a ball in international cricket (he did not bat in the first two games he played) before his offspin was asked to come into action. South Africa went into the match with only five frontline bowling options and no Aiden Markram, so when David Miller wanted to try something different, his only choice was Stubbs.Miller chose a pressure moment, with England were on 148 for 3 after 15 overs, to introduce Stubbs and his first two balls went well before Bairstow smoked his third ball over long-on and then tried to clear deep mid-wicket but didn’t get enough to go over the square boundary. Rilee Rossouw ran in and got to the ball but it slipped through his fingers. Bairstow was on 56, and Stubbs’ nightmare was not over. He was called for a back-foot no-ball on what should have been the last ball of the over, Moeen Ali hit him for six but mercifully the free hit only resulted in two runs.Stubbs’ over cost 20. But he more than made up for it with a power-hitting display that, on another day, might have made the main headline. Stubbs hit eight sixes and two fours in the 28 balls he faced and has provided South Africa with another finishing option. And welcome back to it, Rilee Rossouw After a nightmare in the field including that Bairstow drop, Rossouw didn’t give himself the chance to make up for it with the bat. He pulled the second ball he faced but then tried to cut the fourth and top-edged to third man to depart for four. After six years out of the national side, and a stellar season in the T20 Blast with Somerset, that’s not the return Rossouw would have wanted to make, especially as it gave Reece Topley a second wicket in his opening over and left South Africa with a massive job to do.Jordan seals it If England were worried about having the rug pulled from under them, Chris Jordan ensured it was firmly plugged in with an exceptional third over, the 18th of South Africa’s innings. Jordan nailed the yorker three times and tested Phehlukwayo with outswing to deny South Africa a boundary for the first time since the 11th over and effectively end the contest. South Africa needed 54 runs off 18 balls before his over and 51 off 12 balls afterwards. He also bowled the last over and finished with 0 for 30.

Grealish, Stones, De Bruyne: 9 players who could leave Manchester City soon

The 2024/25 season has been relatively poor for Manchester City, and that may have opened Pep Guardiola’s eyes as to where he needs to improve his team in the next few transfer windows.

The Citizens are expected to have a busy end to the January transfer window, as they add several new players to the squad in the hope it can help them get back into the top four as well as compete in the Champions League and FA Cup. But given the form City have been in, especially around the Christmas period, Guardiola may now be aware of players who don’t have a long-term future.

So, with plenty of players arriving in January and potentially more on the way in the summer, we have taken a closer look at which City players could leave the club in the not-too-distant future.

Manchester City players out of contract in summer 2025

Is Kevin De Bruyne’s time at the Etihad coming to an end?

ByHenry Jackson Jan 15, 2025 1 Scott Carson

Scott Carson joined Man City back in August 2019 on loan from Derby County. His loan lasted for two seasons before it was made into a permanent transfer in 2021.

Carson was brought to City as their third-choice goalkeeper, with his addition to the senior side aiding the team’s homegrown quota. The shot-stopper has played just two games for City, the last being in the 2021/22 season, and now at 39 and with his contract expiring this season, he could be set to leave the Etihad.

The Englishman could decide that this is the right time to retire and move into the next stage of his career, while City may see this as a good opportunity to freshen up their goalkeeping department.

2 Ederson

As well as Carson potentially leaving this summer, Ederson could also be set to end his time at the Etihad. The Brazilian joined City in 2017 and has gone on to play over 350 games for the club, becoming one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League, if not the best.

However, this season has been a bit of a struggle for the 31-year-old, as while dealing with injuries, he has also been dropped by Guardiola in recent weeks.

Ederson was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia last summer, but a move didn’t work out, and with his contract up in 2026, a move to get him out of the Etihad this summer could be on the cards to avoid the club losing him for free later down the line.

The Sky Blues have reportedly identified Diogo Costa as a top target for a new goalkeeper, and his arrival would surely spell the end of Ederson’s time at the club.

7 players who could move to the Saudi Pro League in January

Who could be heading for a payday during the winter window?

ByHenry Jackson Nov 30, 2024 3 Kyle Walker

Kyle Walker’s seven-and-a-half-year spell at Man City looks to be coming to an end, as he wants to try a new challenge. Guardiola recently revealed that the right-back has asked to leave the Premier League champions as he wants to play abroad.

The Englishman has been strongly linked to Milan in this January transfer window on a loan deal. Walker is under contract at City until 2026, so unless there is an obligation-to-buy clause inserted, he will be returning to the Etihad, but a permanent move will likely occur in the summer given his desire to leave the club.

Considering he is 34, it is probably the right time for Walker to leave City, as the Citizens will have their eye on signing a player who can play that role for the foreseeable future.

4 John Stones

John Stones is another City player who is under contract until the summer of 2026, and given he is now 30, a decision could soon be made about his long-term future at the club.

Stones has had some tricky spells at City but has overall been an important player for Guardiola. However, injuries this season have meant that he has played just 12 times in all competitions so far, and with the champions now having sealed the signings of Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov, letting a central defender leave may be a plan of theirs.

At times, Stones has found his position under threat, and with new arrivals, plus Josko Gvardiol and Manuel Akanji potentially being ahead of the English defender in the pecking order, Stones could be the one to make way to balance the books.

5 Matheus Nunes

Despite only joining the club in 2023, Matheus Nunes could be a player who City look to move on in the coming transfer windows as they reshape their squad.

The Portugal international earned his move to the Etihad after impressing at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Nunes hasn’t been given the same number of opportunities as he was at Molineux, and when he has played, he has struggled to make an impact.

It was reported back in October that City were ready to sell Nunes at the end of the season as he had fallen down the pecking order. The 26-year-old continues to be in and out of the City side despite their woes on and off the pitch, and if he fails to nail down a starting spot during their struggles, he could be a player Guardiola decides to sell so they can get their money back.

Every Premier League club's record transfer sale

Which Premier League clubs are the best sellers?

ByStephan Georgiou 5 days ago 6 İlkay Gündoğan

İlkay Gündoğan made a sensational return to the Etihad during the summer transfer window, and the German was hoping to carry on from where he left off in 2023.

While he has played in the majority of the games for City, Gundogan hasn’t quite had the same impact on this team as he did previously. The 34-year-old has looked leggy and overrun at times in this campaign, and with him only signing a one-year deal, an exit could be on the cards once the current season finishes.

Gundogan’s return may have helped Guardiola fill the void in midfield for this season, but the City boss will probably have his eyes on bringing in a younger player who can do what the German is doing now.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

James McAtee is a player who has a bright future ahead of him, and he would have been hoping that he could have spent it as a regular City player. However, the midfielder has struggled for consistent minutes at the Etihad this season after they decided against loaning him out following two successful spells at Sheffield United.

By mid-January, McAtee had played just 13 times for City in all competitions this season, with only three coming as a starter. Amid his situation, several Premier League teams and European sides are thought to be chasing his signature, whether on a loan or permanent switch.

The 22-year-old is another City player who is under contract until 2026, so a decision will likely be made soon over what happens to his long-term future, and if his minutes don’t improve, a move could be on the cards sooner rather than later.

8 Kevin De Bruyne

Manchester City's KevinDeBruyne

Kevin De Bruyne is facing a very important few months, as his Man City contract expires at the end of this season, while it remains unclear if he will sign a new deal or look to leave the club.

The Belgium international is one of City’s best players of all time and has been so important in their success over recent years, but at 33, injuries and fitness are starting to take over, and he isn’t quite having the same impact that he once did.

The Belgian is now free to speak to overseas clubs, and even if a deal is not agreed upon, his time at City looks to be ending, and a move does look likely to happen in the summer as his contract runs down.

5 potential replacements for Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City

With Kevin De Bruyne into his 10th season at Manchester City, here are 5 possible successors if he says goodbye to the Etihad.

England attacker Jack Grealish is another star who could be leaving Man City in the coming months.

The 29-year-old’s time at the Etihad has been very stop-start, and given he is not getting any younger, a move away could soon happen, especially if City decide to bring in a new player in that area of the team.

Grealish already has strong competition in the form of Jeremy Doku, so another arrival could spell the end of his time at City.

Tottenham were linked with a move for Grealish back in November, and while their interest may not be sustained, he could have potential suitors if he continues to be in and out of the City team.

The Englishman is contracted at the Etihad until 2027, so it gives City some time to decide, but a sale in the summer could be City’s best chance of recouping a lot of the money they spent to get him out of Aston Villa in 2021.
