Leeds loanee who was "like Gazza" saw his value rise to £60m after leaving

Leeds United are no strangers to the loan market and they know how important it can be at Championship level, which is also the case for Daniel Farke.

The German head coach’s 2018/19 Championship title-winning campaign was bolstered by the loan addition of Jordan Rhodes, and his 2020/21 title-winning side at Norwich City had Ollie Skipp on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Norwich loanee Oliver Skipp.

This season, Farke brought in Manor Solomon on loan from Spurs and Joe Rothwell on loan from Premier League side Bournemouth to bolster his Leeds side.

Leeds United's best loan stars

Both players have starred for the West Yorkshire outfit in the Championship so far this term, proving themselves to be very valuable additions to the group.

Rothwell has started 21 of his 33 appearances in the second tier this season, completing 91% of his attempted passes, and registered two important assists in the dramatic comeback against Sunderland last month.

Solomon, meanwhile, has racked up seven goals and seven assists in 20 Championship starts, which has led to him ranking incredibly highly against his positional peers in the division, as shown in the table below.

Both players have, therefore, had a positive influence on the pitch this season and Farke will be hoping that they will both have played a part in a promotion to the Premier League by the end of the campaign.

Leeds, and any club bringing in a loanee, do not always see the best of the players that they have on loan, though, and that was the case once upon a time with Ross Barkley.

Remember Ross Barkley's loan spell at Leeds

The Whites swooped to sign the English midfielder on loan from Premier League side Everton on a one-month loan in January 2013, with Neil Warnock in charge at Elland Road at the time.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

At the time of his loan spell with Leeds, Transfermarkt valued Barkley at just £3.8m after he had scored four goals in 13 games on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the first half of the campaign.

BBC Sport’s Kevin Kilbane claimed the midfielder was “like Paul Gascoigne”, who scored ten goals in 57 caps for England, but the Whites did not see the best of his abilities, as he assisted one goal in four appearances before his return to Goodison Park.

Barkley went on to become a regular for Everton in the 2013/14 campaign, scoring six goals in 34 Premier League games, and that is when his career really kicked off.

By November 2014, less than two years on from his time with Leeds, the Manchester Evening News reported that the Toffees had placed a £60m price tag – a British record fee at the time – on the midfielder’s head amid interest from Manchester City.

This means that his value soared by a whopping 1479%, from £3.8m, between his one month at Leeds in January and February 2013 and the time of that report in November 2014.

Unfortunately, Warnock and the Whites did not get to see the best version of the talented ace, who currently plays for Aston Villa in the Premier League and has scored three times in 16 matches, as they only had him on loan for a month in the very early stages of his career.

Schutt's career-best haul sets up thumping Australia victory

Perry, who opened the batting, scored a brisk unbeaten half-century in a comfortable chase

Megan Schutt’s career-best T20I figures, and a crisp half-century from Ellyse Perry opening the batting, spearheaded Australia to a convincing eight-wicket victory in the opening T20I against Pakistan as they began the final build-up to their T20 World Cup title in South Africa last month.Schutt became the fourth Australia bowler to take a five-wicket haul in T20Is and finished with their third-best figures behind Molly Strano (5 for 10) and current team-mate Jess Jonasssen (5 for 12).A target of 119 was always unlikely to challenge Australia and they eased home with 38 balls to spare. Perry, who earlier claimed 2 for 3 from two overs, opening with captain Meg Lanning as Beth Mooney managed what was termed a “niggle” although she had been able to keep throughout Pakistan’s innings.Lanning was beaten by an excellent arm ball from Sadia Iqbal but Perry, dropped on 3 when Iqbal missed a tough return catch, followed her rapid scoring in India – and prolific WNCL form – with a confident 57 off 40 balls which included a six pulled over wide mid-on against a free hit from Fatima Sana.Schutt’s first wicket came courtesy of a superb catch down the leg side by Mooney to remove Bismah Maroof although Australia needed DRS to confirm it had touched the glove. Three balls later Sadaf Shamas spooned to mid-on as Pakistan lost their way after a promising start.Schutt completed her maiden five-wicket haul when she returned at the death, getting Sana taken at cover then top-scorer Omaima Sohail and Tuba Hassan with slower deliveries. However, the single standout moment of Australia’s display in the field was the remarkable return catch snaffled by Alana King from a fiercely struck drive by Nida Dar. King, who barely had time to react, flung out her right hand and even appeared to surprise herself at holding on.King’s figures were only dented marginally in her last over when Ayesha Naseem launched her third six of an impressive counterattack, although King had her revenge.Naseem’s 20-ball innings was the highlight of Pakistan’s display as she showed a boldness that is not always on display. She launched Tahlia McGrath into the fig tree over long-on and played a ferocious pull off Darcie Brown onto the grass bank at midwicket.Brown had an off day which included consecutive no-balls in her opening over and the 34 she conceded was the most of what remains a T20 career in its infancy. It had been Perry, a player at the opposite end of the experience spectrum, who had opened the wicket-taking for Australia with a superb yorker to remove Muneeba Ali which ended a spritely opening stand of 27 in 4.2 overs. In her next over Perry added Javeria Khan via a bottom edge as Pakistan lost 4 for 5 but she wasn’t called upon to bowl again by Lanning who used seven options and that still left Annabel Sutherland not required.

Asia Cup 2023: Sri Lanka, Bangladesh give thumbs down to PCB's hybrid hosting model

But a PCB official tells ESPNcricinfo that the board has emails from BCB and SLC saying they have no issues playing in Pakistan

The PCB presented its “hybrid” solution for hosting the 2023 Asia Cup again to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), believing that this time it had resolved logistical and technical concerns the ACC had raised. Officials from both sides met in Dubai on Tuesday, but it emerged that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have both objected to holding a part of the tournament in the UAE.The hybrid model was the solution the PCB had proposed to account for the fact that India would not travel to Pakistan for the tournament because of ongoing political tensions between the governments of the two countries. The proposed solution will have India playing all their games in the UAE, with the rest of the tournament played out in Pakistan. But ESPNcricinfo understands that the BCB and SLC cited logistical challenges involved in travelling between Pakistan and a second country during the Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be played in September, a month before the ODI World Cup is held across India. Both boards also pointed out that the extreme heat in the UAE in the first half of September was a deterrent, too.Related

PCB wants four out of 13 Asia Cup matches to be played in Pakistan

Pakistan could play their World Cup matches in Bangladesh

“We have written to the ACC to say that we are against the hybrid model,” Mohan de Silva, the SLC secretary, told ESPNcricinfo. “But beyond that, no final decision has been reached. It’s very hot in the UAE at that time of year.”In what is becoming an increasingly vexed issue, a PCB official countered by claiming that the board has emails from both BCB and SLC confirming they have no issues playing in Pakistan. The official also pointed out that last year’s Asia Cup was played from August 27 to September 11 in the UAE – the same window the boards are objecting to this time. In 2018, a 50-over version of the Asia Cup was also played in the UAE, from September 15-28. Both those events moved to the UAE as an alternative; in the first instance the tournament was supposed to be played in India but was moved because of India-Pakistan political tensions; last year it was shifted from Sri Lanka because of the political and economic turmoil the country was going through at the time. One suggestion is for the PCB to follow the example of SLC, which retained the hosting rights for the 2022 edition but host it outside the country. This time, Sri Lanka has been talked about as a probable neutral venue and de Silva said SLC was ready. “If the offer is there to play the tournament in Sri Lanka, we will take it,” he said. “Pakistan will be the official hosts.”But the PCB remains adamant that its solution works for everyone. “The PCB presented a hybrid model that resolves issues of logistics and travel and production,” a PCB official told ESPNcricinfo. “The board reiterated its position that we would not play the Asia Cup if the Pakistan-plus-neutral-venue model is rejected.”Afghanistan, meanwhile, are neutral. “In the previous two ACC meetings, we have strongly emphasised the importance of conducting the event at the scheduled time,” an Afghanistan spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. “As for the venue, we are abiding by the decisions made by the ACC and have no interest in favouring or objecting to any particular board’s stance on the matter. Our priority is to ensure a fair and competitive tournament that benefits the growth and development of cricket in the region.”India and Pakistan have been grouped together along with Nepal in the six-nation Asia Cup, scheduled to be held in the 50-over format as preparation for the World Cup. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in the other group. A total of 13 matches, including the final, will be played across 13 days. Like the format from 2022, the top two teams from each group advance to the Super 4s and the top two teams then contest the final. That leaves open the possibility of India and Pakistan playing three times, should both make it to the final.

Nottingham Forest join battle to sign "monster" Gibbs-White replacement

With Morgan Gibbs-White attracting plenty of interest, Nottingham Forest could welcome an impressive replacement, having reportedly joined the race to sign a rising star.

Nottingham Forest join hectic race

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were back to their ruthless best against Ipswich Town, entering the break three goals to the good before adding a fourth to secure a 4-2 victory in the second-half. Gunning towards shock Champions League qualification, the awoken Midlands giants now sit as many as six points clear of fifth-place Manchester City.

By securing their place among Europe’s elite, Nottingham Forest could also go in search of Europe’s top talents with names such as Tammy Abraham and Hugo Bueno mentioned in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, those at the City Ground could yet fall victim to their own success amid Manchester United’s reported interest in signing Gibbs-White this summer. The attacking midfielder has enjoyed an excellent season and now finds himself on the radar of the Premier League’s top sides.

Edu could be key: Nottingham Forest now plotting hijack to sign teenage gem

He’s been a goalscoring machine at youth level…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 15, 2025

There’s no doubt that his exit would deal Espirito Santo a major blow, but it’s one that those in the Midlands could instantly ease by signing a rising star this summer.

According to Caught Offside, Nottingham Forest have now joined the race to sign Semih Kilicsoy alongside Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Everton. Besiktas reportedly value their 19-year-old sensation at just €20m (£17m), which is set to ignite a battle between Premier League sides in the coming months.

For such a price, Forest could seal a deal destined to become a bargain in years to come. Kilicsoy is already leaving his mark on the Turkish Super Lig and has all the attributes needed to replace a player of Gibbs-White’s calibre. Whether Forest step up their interest remains to be seen, however.

"Monster" Kilicsoy could replace Gibbs-White

If Forest lose their talisman this summer then Kilicsoy could quickly emerge to hand Espirito Santo an ideal replacement. A winger who can also play as a striker, there’s no reason why the teen’s stocky and powerful build won’t see him step into a deeper role throughout his career, although that is one Besiktas or his potential suitors must experiment with.

Semih Kilicsoy for Besiktas.

Meanwhile, in his natural role, Kilicsoy has thrived. Following 15 goal involvements last season, the talented Besiktas star has scored six goals and assisted a further four in the current campaign to earn the praise of analyst Ben Mattinson. The scout had nothing but good things to say, describing him as a “physical monster”.

In comparison, Gibbs-White has scored five goals and assisted a further seven for Nottingham Forest this season – highlighting just how important he’s been under Espirito Santo in his side’s push for Champions League qualification.

More prolific than Isak: Arsenal begin work on signing £63m "powerhouse"

While this season has been nothing short of a failure on the domestic front, Arsenal are still blessed with an incredible array of talent.

David Raya, William Saliba, and Gabriel Magalhães make it nearly impossible for opposing teams to score or create chances. Declan Rice and Thomas Partey can be here, there, and everywhere in midfield, and Bukayo Saka can carry an attack practically all by himself.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after the match

However, therein lies arguably the team’s biggest problem, the fact that without the Englishman, the attack just isn’t good enough, and one of the ways Mikel Arteta and Co can address that problem is by signing a prolific number nine this summer.

Arsenal's pursuit of a new striker

Fortunately, recent reports indicate that they may be looking to do just that and are looking at a star from the continent who is even more of a goal threat than Alexander Isak, who too has been touted for a move to the Emirates.

Indeed, according to a report from Portugal via Caught Offside, Arsenal are incredibly keen on signing Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In fact, the report has revealed that the Gunners have begun working on a deal having ‘requested a formal meeting’ with the player’s agent, who is supposedly a close friend of Arteta, which, if true, could prove incredibly beneficial to get ahead of the other interested parties, which include Manchester United.

While the Swedish international has a €100m – £84m – release clause in his contract, the report claims he could eventually be sold for somewhere in the region of €65m-€75m, which converts to between £54m to £63m.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokerescelebrates after the match

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Gyokeres’ immense goalscoring ability, it is one worth pursuing, especially as he could be an even better signing than Isak.

How Gyokeres compares to Isak

So, the first thing to say is that, in their current state, either striker would likely dramatically improve Arsenal’s fortunes next season, but why would Gyokeres be the better signing?

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokerescelebrates scoring their third goal

Well, before we even get to their performances, there is the small matter of money, and based on reports earlier this year, the Toon star could cost up to £150m, which, if true, would either be entirely out of reach for the Gunners or potentially leave them with nothing else to spend.

Moreover, once you get into their actual output, it’s hard to see why the former Real Sociedad star might be worth almost three times as much as the Sporting ace.

For example, in 41 appearances, totalling 3195 minutes, the Stockholm-born “powerhouse,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 40 goals and provided ten assists, which comes out to a staggering average of 1.21 goal involvements per game, or one every 63.9 minutes – for the entire season.

In contrast, the Magpies’ leading man has scored 23 goals and provided five assists in 33 appearances, totalling 2613 minutes this year, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.17 games, or one every 93.32 minutes.

So, the Premier League star is still an utterly superb striker, but he is simply less prolific than his compatriot, and worse still, he’s far more injury-prone.

For example, he’s missed 67 games for club and country since the start of his career, whereas the former Coventry City star has missed just five and, after a season like this one, Arteta and Co might be even more worried about signing players with lengthy injury histories.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokeres

Ultimately, either Isak or Gyokeres would improve Arsenal, but given the sheer weight of goals he has scored this season, his price tag and the fact he’s far less injury-prone, opting for the latter might be a better decision.

Kent spinners overcome late flourish to seal innings victory over Northamptonshire

Ben Sanderson, Jack White put on 70 for ninth wicket but Daniel Bell-Drummond had Kent in command

Kent’s spinners finally overcame a late flourish from the Northamptonshire tail to wrap up an innings victory at Wantage Road and climb to eighth place in the LV= Insurance County Championship Division One table.Joe Denly claimed four wickets and Hamidullah Qadri three as the home side were bowled out for 369 despite an entertaining ninth-wicket stand of 70 between Ben Sanderson and Jack White. The Northamptonshire pair both registered career-best performances in first-class cricket, with Sanderson hitting 46 before White, batting at No. 10, hammered a maiden half-century from 68 balls. He was last man out for 59 to seal Kent’s first Championship victory since the opening round of the campaign, when they defeated the same opponents by seven wickets at Canterbury. As they had done for most of the previous afternoon, Kent initially kept faith with an all-spin attack – which paid off after just 10 balls when Denly had Saif Zaib snapped up at short leg without adding to his overnight 43.Tom Taylor displayed attacking intent, clubbing both Denly and Jack Leaning to the leg-side boundary and Lewis McManus attempted to follow suit as he latched onto a long hop from Qadri, only to pick out the square leg fielder.Taylor found an unexpected ally in Sanderson, who batted with freedom and rattled up a string of boundaries in their lively partnership of 38, prompting Kent to take the new ball and entrust it to their seamers. It made little difference to Sanderson, who thrashed Arshdeep Singh twice to the cover fence, but Wes Agar duly provided the breakthrough – albeit in unusual fashion, deflecting Sanderson’s drive onto the stumps to run out Taylor at the non-striker’s end. However, the eighth-wicket partnership was surpassed by the ninth, with White slamming Denly back over his head for four and unveiling a rarely seen range of shots, including the reverse sweep, to lift Northamptonshire beyond 300.Sanderson stroked Denly for a couple on the leg-side to bring up the 50 partnership – and the highest score of his 15-year county career – but he missed the opportunity of a maiden half-century, taking a swing at Qadri and edging behind.White, however, made no such mistake, dispatching the leg-spinner cleanly over the top for a boundary to bring up his personal landmark before Denly finally had him caught behind to seal Kent’s success.
