In Focus: Tottenham looking to re-sign former hero Modric

According to Diario Gol, Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move to re-sign Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric.

What’s the story?

Modric starred for Tottenham between 2008 and 2012, and it would be fair to say that the English club’s supporters were devastated when he joined Real Madrid.

There is no question that the Croatian international has developed into one of the world’s best central midfielders over the last few years, and he has won three Champions League titles and one La Liga crown since making the move to the Spanish capital.

Speculation surrounding Modric’s future has gathered pace in recent months though, with his contract due to expire in the summer of 2020.

According to Diario Gol, Tottenham are closely monitoring proceedings, and the London club could launch a stunning move to re-sign the midfielder at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Would Modric go back to Tottenham?

Tottenham are a wonderful football club, there is no question about that. They are not, however, Manchester United.

Nor are they Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester City in the current climate, with all three of those teams arguably having a more realistic chance of winning major silverware.

If Modric, who is rated at £36m by transfermarkt.co.uk, did become available on the open market, it would be a surprise if the likes of United, Chelsea, City, Arsenal and Liverpool were not in the running.

Modric’s relationship with Tottenham could well stand Mauricio Pochettino’s side in good stead, but a lot of things would have to occur for a deal to take place.

Modric will be 33 next year, but the Croatian is still a stunning footballer, and if Real Madrid decide to sell, he will not exactly be short of interest.

It is certainly a deal to watch over the coming months, but for the moment, he remains a key figure at the Bernabeu.

Manchester City fans hit back at Sterling critics following England win over Sweden

If anyone in the England squad can cope with intense criticism, it is Raheem Sterling. The Manchester City star has been hounded numerous times over the course of the season for trivial off-the-pitch moments, as well as his performances on the field.[ad_pod ]On Saturday, the 23-year-old, who is valued at £81m byÂTransfermarkt, started as part of Gareth Southgate’s XI against Sweden in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.The Premier League champion has played in all but one of the nation’s tournament matches as he, as well as a handful of other stars, were rested for the dead rubber against Belgium in the group stage.[brid autoplay=”true” video=”267843″ player=”12034″ title=”Five crazy stats from the World Cup last 16″]Against Sweden, the attack-minded player saw plenty of the ball and his pace certainly caused moments of concern for England’s opponents. However, he came under criticism from fans for failing to bury two clear attempts on goal after hesitating when inside the box. While a huge number of England supporters expressed frustration on Twitter, some City fans defended their man.

Choosing Ward to replace Karius is a big risk, but one that could pay off for Liverpool

Liverpool should consider handing the number one role to Danny Ward if they fail to land their prime targets in the hunt for Loris Karius’s replacement.

What’s the word?

From the moment when Karius made two howlers in the Reds’ Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in May, doubts arose over his long-term position at Anfield.

Liverpool have been linked to numerous shot-stoppers over the last couple of months, but at the moment, Karius remains as number one.

If some fans were getting used to the idea that the German will remain first choice for the upcoming season, they may have swiftly changed their minds following the midweek action.

During a pre-season friendly against Tranmere Rovers, Karius fumbled a simple save, which led to a goal for the lower-league side, who scored twice in a 3-2 loss.

It seems, though, that Liverpool’s hunt for a new shot-stopper is struggling, so perhaps they need to rethink their plan.

Should the Reds look closer to home?

There is no doubt that Liverpool need a world-class stopper to compete with their rivals.

No club won a league title without a top-level player in between the sticks, but if the Reds fail to land a big name, they should promote from within for the time being.

Ward has been at the club 2012, but he has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular.

In recent seasons, though, the 25-year-old has proven that he can cut it at the top level having been first choice for Wales at Euro 2016, in which they reached the semi-finals.

Ward was also a crucial part of Huddersfield Town’s promotion to the Premier League while on loan during the 2016-17 season.

If Klopp cannot bring in his top target, then he should give Ward a chance to grab the spot.

Leeds must do everything to sign Bakary Sako after he rejects Crystal Palace stay

According to an exclusive report by Football.London, Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that out-of-contract attacker Bakary Sako has turned down a new deal to stay at Selhurst Park, and Championship side Leeds United must do everything they can to bring him to Elland Road this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Football.London report that the Mali international was one of four first-team players whose contracts expired at the end of June that Hodgson wanted to keep in south London, but the former England boss revealed on Thursday that he expects the 30-year-old to go.

Speaking to Football.London, the 70-year-old said: “No, he is not signing, he doesn’t want to sign.”

Sako, who primarily plays out wide but has also shown that he can feature through the middle too, has scored eight goals and provided one assist in 50 appearances in all competitions for the Eagles, with injury blighting his 2017/18 campaign in particular.

[ad_pod ]

Why should Leeds do everything to sign him?

Well, new Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa will be desperate to strengthen his attacking options before the start of the new Championship campaign given Pierre-Michel Lasogga has returned to Hamburg following a loan spell and Jay-Roy Grot and Pawel Cibicki have been sent out on loan, and Sako could be the ideal candidate.

The 30-year-old is quick, tricky and versatile, and the fact that he has an impressive record of 24 goals and 21 assists in 78 games, as per Transfermarkt, in the second tier proves the quality that he would bring to the Yorkshire outfit, who must demand an £8.1m attacker in exchange if West Bromwich Albion move for Kemar Roofe.

He is a player that would excite a frustrated United faithful whose transfer business has been few and far between so far, and he would surely help them in their bid to finally return to the Premier League this term.

Deal for Schar is a great move from Mike Ashley

It’s been a pretty tough window for Newcastle fans to endure so far this summer.

Mike Ashley has only managed to bring in Ki Sung-yeung, Martin Dubravka and Kenedy to the team this summer. While all three are solid signings after a 10th place finish, it’s not quite the investment Benitez or the fans will have been looking for.

The perennially frugal owner informed Rafa Benitez that the club must sell before they can buy, and it seems that with the sale of Chancel Mbemba, Newcastle might just be able to bring another defender in.

According to the Mirror, Newcastle are closing in on a deal for Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar.

The Breakdown

According to the report, Newcastle will complete the deal for £3.5 million which if true, would be an absolute steal for the club. Once linked with Manchester United, Schar is a physical defender who can also pass the ball out from the back.

The Swiss international defender was highly rated in Switzerland before he made his move to Hoffenheim and then most recently Deportivo La Coruna.

With Deportivo being relegated last season, a cheap deal could be a steal for the Magpies. Schar was an integral member of the Switzerland side that reached the last-16 and with Mbemba leaving the club, Schar will more than fill his shoes.

While it’s not £30 million deal that the fans might have been crying out for, it’s a cut-price deal but it’s one the Newcastle fans should be happy with.

Thoughts Newcastle fans?

Rangers fans want to sign Lafferty to replace Morelos

Loads of Rangers fans are saying the same thing about their need for a new goalscorer, begging the club to bring back Kyle Lafferty.

Steven Gerrard had a lot of work to do when he joined the Gers earlier this summer, and for the most part the club has done some very shrewd business.

However, the Europa League ties against Shkupi were far from perfect, and plenty of fans still feel he has one major move left to make.

Alfredo Morelos has not hit the ground running, and loads of fans are desperate for a new front man to lead their title charge.

Morelos scored 14 goals in 35 league appearances last season, which isn’t a bad hit rate, but the 22 year-old can be extremely wasteful, and simply isn’t good enough to keep pace with Celtic’s Moussa Dembele.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”271323″ player=”12034″ title=”Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Football Manager”]

Lafferty actually scored less league goals than Morelos last season, grabbing 12 for Hearts, but loads of fans think he is the answer to their goalscoring woes.

The Northern Irishman left Ibrox in 2012 over a contract dispute, after grabbing 31 league goals in 104 appearances.

The 6ft 4in striker is strong, clinical, and most of all he knows what it means to represent the Gers.

Loads of fans are calling for his return, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Loan return to Crystal Palace for Liverpool star Nathaniel Clyne would suit all parties perfectly

It seems a long time ago now that Nathaniel Clyne had half of the Premier League courting his services in summer 2015, eventually signing for Liverpool in a bargain £12.5million deal due to his Southampton contract winding down. Back then, Clyne was starting ahead of Manchester City’s £50million right-back Kyle Walker within the England setup and had just finished the season as part of the backline with the second-best defensive record in the Premier League.

But like so many former Southampton charges, Clyne’s venture to Merseyside hasn’t quite panned out as expected. He’s not flopped to the same degree as some, like Rickie Lambert, but he’s not been a resounding success story either. His first season was decisively unspectacular, his second season was more encouraging, but his third was stifled by injury – eventually making just two Premier League starts and missing out a place on Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

And Clyne’s now reached a point where his future at Liverpool hangs delicately in the balance. While he’s been fully involved in pre-season so far, youngsters Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold both impressed at right-back in his absence last term to the extent that the latter was chosen over Clyne for a spot on the plane to Russia. Jurgen Klopp’s clearly a big fan of both promising starlets, particularly Alexander-Arnold who has already proved a natural fit for the Liverpool gaffer’s energetic and expansive style of play, while Clyne’s contract with Liverpool has now entered its final two years.

The coming season then, will surely be one of make or break for Clyne’s Liverpool career. But that’s perhaps why, counter-intuitively, he should be spending it on loan at a different club – or more specifically, a former one. Crystal Palace gave Clyne his footballing education, progressing through the Eagles’ academy before making 137 appearances for the first-team and earning a move to newly-promoted Southampton back in summer 2012.

While re-joining his boyhood club may initially seem like a humbling step down for Clyne, there’s an important pragmatic counter-argument here; Clyne would likely get into the starting XI every week at Selhurst Park, rather than having to fight for game-time with two younger right-backs undoubtedly in Klopp’s favour right now. Why slog it out on the training pitch when Clyne could provide direct comparisons with whoever Klopp starts every week, all the more significantly within the confines of the Premier League?

For Palace too, full-back is amongst their weakest departments and especially on the right-hand side. Joel Ward, although a fantastic servant to the club, has never been the most naturally gifted of footballers and lacks the key attributes that define modern day full-backs – technical flair, delivery and the ability to bomb up and down the touchline.

It shouldn’t be overlooked how important that could be for Palace offensively too; for all the criticism of Christian Benteke last season, there really aren’t too many players at Selhurst Park who whip in the crosses he likes to attack. Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend both look to cut inside and shoot, Patrick van Aanholt is more concerned with scoring than supplying despite lining up at left-back, and Ward’s crossing leaves much to be desired.

Clyne though, a balanced full-back who offers something at both ends, can bring the natural width and delivery to provide Benteke with a better source of goals in the air – six of his nine Premier League assists have indeed been crosses from out wide and during Clyne’s last full Premier League season, 2016/17, only four right-backs finished the campaign with a stronger haul of accurate crosses, 18.

Palace fans will understandably be reluctant to see any player reduce Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s game-time after breaking through at right-back last season, and most would probably want him starting ahead of Ward during the coming campaign so impressive has the 20-year-old’s development been so far. But that’s exactly why a loan deal could prove so beneficial for all parties, the youngster included.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”273048″ player=”12034″ title=”Has Klopp just cranked up the pressure on himself”]

For Palace, it gives Wan-Bissaka someone to really learn from over the next twelve months before giving him a clear path to the starting XI in a year’s time. For Liverpool, meanwhile, it gives Clyne the opportunity to regain his fitness and prove himself, and the club to assess whether the 27-year-old really fits into their long-term plans based on regular Premier League performances.

And even if, when summer 2019 comes around, Klopp decides he’s happy continuing with Alexander-Arnold and Gomez alone, the chances are that a move to Palace will leave Clyne a more valuable commodity. At that point his contract will have just a year left to go, but Liverpool will get more for a player in that situation who has just played and potentially impressed over a whole season than an experienced defender who has spent the term struggling for game-time behind two younger alternatives.

Financially and in footballing terms, everybody looks set to benefit.

So, should Clyne return to Palace on loan this summer? Let us know by voting below…

Borna Barisic will bring bags of experience to Rangers next season

Rangers are close to signing NK Osijek defender Borna Barisic on a £2.2million deal according to Sky Sports.

What’s the story?

Barisic came to Rangers’ attention after impressive performances in both legs of their Europa League qualifying tie against Osijek in which the Gers ran out eventual victors.

The versatile player is comfortable playing at left-back and left-midfield and was a constant menace down the Rangers’ right flank throughout the game.

The Croatian international, who is valued at £1.8million on Transfermarkt, would certainly provide competition for places at left-back and could form a strong partnership alongside compatriot Nikola Katic.

According to the report, Barisic is having a medical at Rangers and a finalised move is imminent.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”275149″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Zlatan Richarlison & Alisson”]

Class addition

Barisic showed across the two legs against Rangers that he has serious class and was a threat in attack as well as being solid at the back.

He will be the latest acquisition in what has been a very strong summer in the transfer window for new boss Steven Gerrard but it’s how the team gels on the pitch that will really show the success of his transfer business.

Chelsea should gone all out in the summer to sign this Spurs star

Chelsea completed their summer transfer window with the late captures of goalkeeper Kepa, as well adding Mateo Kovacic as part of the deal which saw Thibaut Courtois go the other way.

The Blues endured a frustrating window on the whole though, and there is an element of disappointment amongst some fans, who thought the summer would see a massive influx of new blood into a squad which failed to compete for the Premier League title last term.

With January now seeming a long way off, the Chelsea board could well end up living to regret not signing one or two more new players, and one man we think they should have made a move for is Spurs midfielder Moussa Dembele.

The Belgian was expected to make a move away from the London club this summer, but has managed to stay put with Mauricio Pochettino’s men, despite seemingly being there for the taking for a club like Chelsea.

Despite the signing of Kovacic, the Blues still look light in the middle, with an ageing Cesc Fabregas and the poor form thus far of last summer’s big money signing Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Signing someone like Dembele would have been a shrewd move by Sarri and the Blues. The midfielder brings a presence to the middle of the park, is classy on the ball, and has top flight experience in abundance.

Spurs will no doubt have been delighted to have kept hold of their man, but we at the Transfer Tavern can’t help but feel this was an opportuntiy missed by the Chelsea board.

Chelsea fans, what do you think? Would Dembele have been a good signing? Let us know in the comments!

Tottenham fans react to Lamela injury update

Erik Lamela has returned to first-team training for Tottenham Hotspur having missed the clash with Newcastle United last weekend due to a muscular problem.

Lamela suffered the injury during Tottenham’s pre-season tour of the United States, and was therefore not involved in the 2-1 success away to Newcastle on the opening weekend of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign.

The Argentine is now believed to be in contention for Saturday’s clash with Fulham at Wembley, where Mauricio Pochettino’s side will look to move onto six points in the Premier League table.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”279706″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Danny Rose To PSG or Schalke”]

Lamela scored four times in 29 appearances for Tottenham last season after returning from injury, and will certainly boost Pochettino’s options in the final third of the field.

The Spurs supporters have been airing their views on his return on social media, and it would be fair to say that not everyone is on the same page when it comes to the 5ft 11in ace.
