Wolverhampton Wanderers fans slam Bonatini’s display against Leicester City

Wolverhampton Wanderers set the Championship alight last season as they stormed to Premier League promotion.

Since moving up to the division, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have noticed a big difference.

The top flight is a completely different animal, and so far, the Molineux-based club have had a few struggles.

[ad_pod ]

In their opening match against Everton they managed to claim a point in a 2-2 draw, but they struggled to get anything out of Saturday’s fixture against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

One man in particular came under scrutiny, and that was Leo Bonatini, who came on as a substitute in the 46th minute.

The forward, who has 12 Championship goals to his name, replaced Diogo Jota as Wolves failed to bring down the deficit.

The Brazilian signed a four-year contract with Wolves in the summer after spending last season on loan at the Midlands outfit.

Plenty of supporters are not convinced by his quality, and many vented their fury on Twitter.

Ayoze Perez’s post-match tweet to Newcastle United fans backfires

After a frustrating summer transfer window, Newcastle United have had a mixed start to the season.

On the opening weekend, Rafael Benitez’s side faced a tough task against Tottenham Hotspur.

The North-East outfit were always going to be underdogs, and they proved to be so when they lost 2-1.

On Saturday, the club came up against newly-promoted side Cardiff City, and on paper, fans may have expected a victory, but they had to settle for a point.

Despite Kenedy missing a stoppage-time penalty, snatching a point was not the worst result possible given that from the 66th minute Newcastle played with 10 men following Isaac Hayden’s sending-off.

Understandably, though, plenty of supporters have been left disappointed, and a handful took aim at Ayoze Perez on social media.

The attacker, who started the game but was substituted in the 65th minute, tried to rally the troops with a post-match tweet.

For some, though, Perez’s message was not acceptable.

Everton do not need Veloso after arrival of Gomes and Schneiderlin revival

Despite a slow start to the summer transfer window, Everton ended up being one of the most active teams in the market having brought in Richarlison, Lucas Digne, Bernard, Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes and Kurt Zouma.

However, despite making all of the above additions, there were rumours suggesting that manager Marco Silva had already been looking at how he could strengthen his squad further next January.

The Breakdown

According to TEAMtalk, Everton are battling it out with fellow Premier League side Wolves for the signature of free agent Miguel Veloso.

But Silva has since confirmed in his pre-match press conference (via Liverpool Echo) that Everton are not interested in either £2.25m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Veloso or Claudio Marchisio, who is also a free agent.

And, looking at Everton’s squad, Silva has made the right call. There is no need for another central midfielder to be brought in.

As well as deadline-day signing Gomes, the Portuguese boss also has the likes of Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin to call upon.

Schneiderlin has mostly struggled at Everton since arriving at Goodison Park from Manchester United back in January 2017.

However — and while it is still early — the Frenchman looks vastly better under Silva in the two games he has played in this season.

With that in mind, there is no room for Veloso in Silva’s squad, especially once Gomes returns to full fitness.

Not signing Ben Arfa is a blessing in disguise for West Ham United

West ham United were offered the chance to sign Hatem Ben Arfa in the summer after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expired, according to L’Equipe.

What’s the word?

Manuel Pellegrini had a big job on his hands when he took over from David Moyes at the end of last season.

The Chilean, who won two Premier League titles with Manchester City, brought in nine new signings in a bid to improve the team.

So far, though, things have not quite clicked for the East London outfit as they are yet to win a Premier League match.

According to L’Equipe, one of those players could have been Ben Arfa, who was released from PSG at the end of the season.

The report claims that the midfielder’s camp offered him to the Hammers, but a move never came to fruition.

Have West Ham missed a trick?

Most Premier League watchers will remember Ben Arfa for being a disruptive figure at Newcastle United.

During his time at the North-East outfit, he was accused of fitness issues and causing problems behind the scenes.

On the pitch, the 31-year-old made 86 appearances, scoring 14 goals and creating 16 assists.

The midfielder seemed to find a new lease of life when he returned to France, but he has since dwindled.

There is nothing to say that Ben Arfa would not succeed at the London Stadium, but it would have been a huge risk.

Given how many new faces have arrived at the club, the last thing needed would be a controversial figure.

Match Preview: England vs Spain

[ad_pod ]

England will hope the positivity of their 2018 World Cup campaign seeps into their first ever Nations League campaign with the Three Lions due to host Spain at Wembley on Saturday night.

While the ultimate permutations of the competition still remain somewhat puzzling, it’s already clear that there will be a higher level of competitiveness than a traditional friendly – and that England and Spain should put on an entertaining game.

But Saturday’s opponents enter this fixture on a much sourer note, having again exited the World Cup early and subsequently appointed Luis Enrique to usher in a new era.

So, will Spain start it off with a win or can Southgate keep the good times rolling for England? Our match preview covers everything you need to know ahead of the Wembley clash…

What History Tells Us

It’s England who boast the stronger head-to-head record in this fixture, with four more wins and 15 more goals, but much of that dominance stems from a twenty-year spell between 1960 and 1980 when the Three Lions won all seven of their encounters with Spain. In contrast, England have managed just one win from the last six meetings, with four of those defeats adding to Spain’s haul of an impressive nine clean sheets.

The situation in terms of recent history, meanwhile, is somewhat reversed. Whereas three of Spain’s four trophies have all come since 2008, it’s England who are currently higher in the FIFA rankings after reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup. Spain crashed out in the Round of 16 to hosts Russia and are now entering a new era which is very much caught in a transition between two generations of talent.

Key Player Focus – The Left-Backs

The wing-back berths are a vital element of the functionality of Southgate’s 3-1-4-2 system and with Ashley Young dropped from the latest squad, the Spain clash is a vital chance for Luke Shaw to establish himself as the preferred choice on the left-hand side.

Despite Manchester United’s difficult start to the campaign he’s been in fantastic form this term, bouncing back from the struggles of the last few years to create eight chances, win seven takes and make five interceptions in four Premier League outings – while hitting the net against Leicester on the opening weekend. It’s a huge opportunity for a player who no doubt has the talent to be an England regular, but has lacked the fitness and consistency to justify such a role.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”290057″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Fixture in Focus England v Spain”]

That being said, the introduction of Marcos Alonso feels like an important one for Spain too. With Jordi Alba out of Enrique’s squad seemingly due to their frosty personal relationship, the Chelsea man is essentially auditioning to replace the Barcelona defender on a long-term basis.

He could be a key ingredient in Enrique’s mission to make Spain a far more dynamic side too and has been unstoppable going forward so far this term – one goal and two assists in the Premier League is an acceptable season-long return for a defender, let alone grabbing that in just four games.

Team News

We may only be one game on from England’s World Cup heroics but Football FanCast are already anticipating some changes from the starting XI Southgate stuck to so religiously in Russia. One of those has been imposed upon the Three Lions with Raheem Sterling withdrawing through injury and Jamie Vardy retiring – leaving Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford as the only obvious candidate to partner Harry Kane up front. Southgate, meanwhile, has forced one himself by essentially swapping Young for Shaw – who looks set to start over Tottenham’s Danny Rose.

Perhaps the more surprising change comes on the other flank. Joe Gomez is a firm favourite of Southgate’s and may well have started for England at the World Cup had he not been injured.

The youngster is fit once again and impressing for Liverpool, so considering how naturally suited he is to the right centre-back berth, he may end up completing England’s back three alongside John Stones and Harry Maguire. Walker, meanwhile, could then replace Kieran Trippier at right wing-back in a revised role for the Manchester City star, leaving both Tottenham defenders on the bench.

Spain’s lineup, on the other hand, requires a little more guesswork simply because Enrique will have his own ideas on how to set the team, especially now that David Silva, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique have all hung up their boots.

That being said, although there is certainly the potential for Enrique to employ the back three system he used frequently at Barcelona, we’re expecting more evolution than revolution, with the shape of the team largely staying in tact from the World Cup.

Alvaro Morata should get the nod up front despite scoring just two goals for Chelsea since the turn of 2018 – he’s a more conventional centre-forward than Rodrigo and Iago Aspas and has a decent scoring record for Spain with 13 in 23 outings – while Real Madrid duo Isco and Marco Asensio will operate in close support, drifting inward from wider starting points. David De Gea should keep his place, although there’s plenty of popularity behind world-record goalkeeper Kepa starting instead.

Revealed: 85% of Leeds fans polled want Bielsa to pursue a deal for Steven Caulker

Steven Caulker remains a free-agent after leaving Dundee earlier this summer and a large majority of the Leeds fans that answered our poll were keen to see Bielsa make an attempt to sign the former Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers centre-back.

The West Yorkshire side were linked with Caulker during the summer whilst he was still a Dundee player, but a deal never materialised and they could now go back in to sign the 26-year-old for nothing at any time.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”291236″ player=”12034″ title=”Jose Mourinho Has Turned Into Arsene Wenger”]

Leeds have started the season in electric form and sit at the top of the Championship, with 14 points from their first six league matches under new boss Bielsa, who has successfully introduced his high-tempo style of play to the Elland Road outfit.

Despite the positive attitude around the club at the moment though, fans may be slightly worried about Bielsa’s small squad and the risk of players burning out thanks to the intense training sessions and matches. One area where the Whites are short is certainly in central defence, with full-backs Gaetano Berardi and Luke Ayling both having to fill in at times during this campaign.

With that in mind, 85 per cent of Leeds fans polled said that they would back a move for Caulker, who is looking for his 10th career club at the age of 26. Check out the full results below.

HYS: Would Middlesbrough have benefitted from signing Solanke?

Middlesbrough lost some key players in the summer transfer window, but it has not affected them negatively as the team are currently second in the Championship table.

Tony Pulis’s side have won four and drawn two of their six matches since the season kicked off.

It has since emerged that the club missed out on signing a Premier League striker in the summer.

According to The London Evening Standard, Boro were among a handful of clubs who had loan offers rejected by Liverpool for Dominic Solanke.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”292154″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch The FFC Accy Show Real football is back with our PL & EFL accumulators”]

The report claims that Anfield bosses felt that the best place for the young striker was to continue his development at the club.

The 21-year-old, who is valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, can play either up front on his own or in wide areas, which gives him versatility that plenty of clubs would be happy to have.

Following the departure of Patrick Bamford, Boro could have done with a new attacking target, but was Solanke the answer?

Three men Daniel Levy should be lining up if Tottenham’s crisis continues

The world of football is very unpredictable. This is certainly the case for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

One moment you are flying high, the next moment your club is in a rut. The manager has suffered a three match losing streak for the first time since he took charge of The Lilywhites.

Whilst it seemed, and still seems, unimaginable that the Argentinian would be given the marching orders by Daniel Levy, the future is unclear. He would have to have a truly shocking season to be let go, but what is worse is the interest from other clubs.

José Mourinho’s woes at Man United mean the northern giants may be looking for a new manager very soon. Indeed, Pochettino will surely be one of the very first names on most clubs in Europe’s wishlists.

With that in mind, here are THREE managers that are currently available to take the reins in north London if Pochettino was to go…

Antonio Conte

Two seasons in charge, one Premier League title and one FA Cup. That is a very good return for Antonio Conte.

The animated Italian was let go by Chelsea in the summer after dropping out of the top four in his second season. But there is no shame in being fired from the London club.

He is obviously a very good manager, however, his slightly more conservative style of football may clash with the players and culture that Pochettino has created, meaning this may not be the most successful move.

Slaven Bilić

Many believe that former West Ham manager Slaven Bilić was treated unfairly by The Hammers. In fact, the only reason he may have been sacked was that he could not live up to the high standards that he had created for the club.

Nonetheless, he left with one of the best records that a West Ham manager has had in a very long time.

Given a bigger budget, resources and time, who knows what he could achieve at White Hart Lane.

Ralph Hasenhüttl

The Austrian Ralph Hasenhüttle has had one of the most interesting success stories in Europe over the past few years.

He Austrian guided the newcomers to the Bundesliga RB Leipzig to second-place and Champions League qualification in his first season in charge, with a brand of high tempo, progressive football.

This style would suit Tottenham perfectly, and the manager is still without a job.

Silva already proving his worth by transforming Gueye

Everton got back on track on Saturday with a comfortable 3-0 win, and Idrissa Gueye showed exactly why he is still the Toffees’ most important player.

[ad_pod ]

Ronald Koeman’s list of transfer fails is a lot bigger than the list of transfer success stories, but the 2016 move for Gueye was certainly a hit.

The 29 year-old signed from Aston Villa for just £7.1m due to a relegation clause in his contract, and it’s starting to look like one of the steals of the century.

The tough tackling midfielder has been wonderful at breaking up play throughout his career, but he is now starting to show a side to his game that not many Everton fans believed he had.

Of course, his main job is protecting the defence, and he did that perfectly against Fulham, making a truly remarkable nine tackles.

He also made five interceptions and one clearance, and this ability to read attacks and break them up is something that no other Toffees’ midfielder has.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”302265″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts The Icelandic Coutinho & The Scottish Ronaldo”]

The 54-cap Senegal international has improved massively on the ball since Marco Silva’s arrival though, and he completed 88 per cent of his passes, including three out of his four long balls.

He also created two chances, in what was perhaps the most well-rounded performance in the Premier League so far this season.

The Toffees are yet to find the perfect midfield partner for Gueye, but the 29 year-old’s improvement under Silva is there for all to see, making him one of the best signings of this decade.

So, Everton fans, how impressed were you by Gueye on Saturday? Is he your best signing under Koeman? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below…

Worrall’s popularity at Rangers could spell end to Nottingham Forest career

According to The Nottingham Post, Rangers midfielder Connor Goldson has compared teammate and Forest loan Joe Worrall to Harry Maguire.

This is an indication of the defender’s growing popularity at Ibrox, where fans and players are praising him.

The 21-year-old had a slow start to life in Scotland, but is beginning to curry favour with manager Steven Gerrard. He has started five of the last six games in all competitions, albeit he has not look completely convincing in all of those performances.

A stellar showing in the Europa League against Villarreal put him in contention to start in the Scottish Premier League. However, he was heavily criticised in his league debut, as the club lost to Livingston. But Gerrard has kept his faith in the 6ft 4 defender and it has played dividends after his robust performance in a victory over league leaders Hearts on Sunday.

Fans have taken to Twitter to show how impressed their are with the loan signing, and obviously Worrall’s fellow players are also commending him. Unfortunately for Forest, this could spell the end for his time at the club.

If the defender’s success and popularity continues in Glasgow, there is a chance that he could open up a permanent move to the club. Forest manager Aitor Karanka made it clear that Worrall was not part of his plans this season, and while that was the obvious cause to the loan move, may also be the reason why Worrall will be reluctant to return to The City Ground.

However, the positive is that every good performance by Worrall will increase his price, meaning Forest may be able to cash in heavily on the player come the summer, or even January.

But it’s gradually becoming more likely that the loan move may become permanent.
