Skipp has fortnight to prove Tottenham worth after Sissoko update

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Sissoko’s injury prognosis is better than first feared, with the France international now only expected to miss two weeks of action.

The London Evening Standard report that there is even an outside chance that Sissoko could play in next week’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg clash with Chelsea.

What’s the word, then?

It had initially been feared that Sissoko would miss a month of football, leaving Spurs with just Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp as their specialist central midfielders.

However, there is now a chance that he will only be absent for this weekend’s clash with Fulham.

CheekySport’s Joel claims Spurs badly need to invest in January after not having “the balls” to beat Arsenal. Check out his uncensored opinion in the video below…

The news is a boost to Mauricio Pochettino, who has been rocked by a succession of injury blows, with the likes of Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama all currently on the treatment table.

However, it means that Skipp has a very limited window of opportunity in which to prove his worth to Pochettino if, indeed, he is selected to replace the Frenchman this weekend.

Good for Spurs, bad for Skipp

Skipp has made one start for Spurs in the Premier League so far this season, in the 1-0 win over Burnley, though he has been given opportunities to play during the club’s Champions League campaign; he featured for 90 minutes against Inter Milan and PSV Eindhoven.

But domestically he has largely been restricted to cameo appearances, playing 11 minutes against Everton, 13 against Bournemouth, 14 against Cardiff and just three versus Southampton.

His performances, however, have impressed, and it seems likely that he will be picked to replace Sissoko in this weekend’s trip to Craven Cottage.

Thus, he is likely to have just 90 minutes to really establish himself in this Tottenham side and give Pochettino a headache before the clash with the Blues.

Should he turn in an assured performance, Skipp could well leave Sissoko on the bench even if the midfield destroyer is back to full fitness.

Crystal Palace fans crucify Roy Hodgson for post-match comments

[ad_pod ]Crystal Palace failed to hold onto their half-time lead on Wednesday night as Southampton came back via James Ward-Prowse – despite the Eagles’ numerous opportunities in front of goal, their finishing was once again lacklustre and they paid the price.Wilfried Zaha was a menace throughout and fired his side in front in the first half, but lost his head late on and was sent off for sarcastically applauding the referee after being booked – a gesture for which he will be reprimanded by the FA.Despite the big striker having scored against Spurs in the FA Cup last weekend, Roy Hodgson elected not to start Connor Wickham and instead gave the nod to Jordan Ayew – the Ghanaian worked hard but never looked too threatening, as has been the theme throughout the season. The Saints equalised with 13 minutes of regulation time remaining, at which point Hodgson may have felt it necessary to bring on a fresh pair of legs up front – instead, the former England boss stuck with Ayew until the final whistle and one can’t help but feel that, had Wickham or Christian Benteke been on the field, the Croydon outfit could have secured all three points.Negative substitutions and tactics have been a point of controversy for Palace this season and this surely isn’t the first time the Selhurst Park faithful felt that Hodgson’s game management was poor. The 71-year-old’s post-match comments did nothing but make it worse – here’s how the Palace fans reacted on Twitter…

Liverpool fans slam Joel Matip following West Ham draw

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool had another wobble in the Premier League on Monday night as they were held to a 1-1 draw at West Ham United.

The Reds have moved three points clear at the top of the table, but Manchester City will have the chance to reclaim first spot when they travel to Everton on Wednesday, given that they have a better goal difference than their title competitors.

There was another start for Joel Matip at the London Stadium, with fellow central defenders Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren both currently on the sidelines for the Merseyside club.

West Ham’s equaliser on Monday came from a quick free-kick and Matip was one of those at fault for Michail Antonio’s goal.

Matip – a 2016 arrival from Schalke 04 – has largely found it difficult to put together a consistent run of performances for Liverpool.

And the English outfit’s fans have blasted the 27-year-old’s display against the Hammers.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the Liverpool supporters can be seen below:

These Rangers fans are fuming with Graham Dorrans’ latest setback

[ad_pod ]

Rangers are set to welcome St Johnstone to Ibrox on Saturday afternoon with every hope of closing the gap on league leaders Celtic.

Ahead of the fixture, Steven Gerrard delivered a fresh injury update to the press and suggested both Jermain Defoe and Kyle Lafferty are doubts for the clash, but the biggest frustration for supporters concerned Graham Dorrans.

Gerrard also confirmed that Dorrans, who is yet to make an SPFL start this season, has suffered a fresh setback in his bid to return from injury.

The Scotland international has been sidelined with a knee injury for the majority of the campaign so far, and his anonymous presence is starting to frustrate supporters.

Indeed, plenty of the Gers faithful called for the 31-year-old to leave the club after learning of his latest setback, with his injury plagued season provoking fans to claim he’s finished at the club.

Despite making a bright start to life at Ibrox in 2017, the injury problems he has suffered since suggest he will struggle to return to the level of performance which preceded his long term absence, and with his 32nd birthday looming on the horizon it’s easy to understand why fans are beginning to write him off.

Here’s what the Rangers fans had to say in response to Gerrard’s injury update:

Sunderland fans criticise Phil Parkinson for not meeting the press post-match

It has been another tumultuous week for Sunderland and the events that have taken place haven’t exactly painted Phil Parkinson in a good light.

Now, he has upset supporters even more by failing to attend his post-match press conference after the draw against Blackpool, with accusations that he is a coward who lacks leadership.

However, he did show a lot of bottle to handle Aiden McGeady in the way he did this week, ostracising the Irishman and placing him on the transfer list due to the negative influence he has on the rest of the squad.

That was a bold decision, and since it didn’t help to end what is now an eight-match winless run, Parkinson may not have felt too confident about dealing with questions from the media. Fans are clearly shocked by that.

Considering the pressure he is under having won just two games in 13, the Black Cats’ boss has clearly made the wrong call by not making himself available for questioning.

He made some big calls against the Seasiders, such as dropping Will Grigg and the usual centre-back pairing of Jordan Willis and Joel Lynch, and fans will want to know why.

It could be a worrying sign that the fan discontent is beginning to affect his mindset, and some believe his behaviour alone is worthy of being sacked, let alone the shocking results on the pitch.

In more positive news, Parkinson could pave the way for encouraging youngster Jack Bainbridge to play his way into first-team contention, and that could give the squad a bit of a lift.

Leeds fans criticise Kiko Casilla after his mistake signals a return to his old ways

Leeds put all their recent good work behind them by throwing away a 3-0 lead to Cardiff on Saturday, losing all composure and concentration in doing so.

For a side which had only conceded 10 goals in 21 games prior it is a shocking turn of events, and many fans are pointing the finger of blame at one man – Kiko Casilla.

The Spaniard has often been subject to ridicule in his time at Elland Road but in recent weeks he had certainly turned over a new leaf and was beginning to win round the Leeds faithful, garnering significant praise for his performances between the sticks.

A true test for any Leeds fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

However, a typically naive and risky decision to come out and punch a cross clear allowed Lee Tomlin to find the back of the net, the goal which sparked an unlikely comeback from the Bluebirds and cost the Whites all three points.

While it was a poor and unnecessary error to make, it still took a fine finish from Tomlin to find the far corner, and from that point on Leeds should have shut up shop and ensured the visitors couldn’t find a way back into the match.

Instead, Bielsa decided to bring on a 20-year-old centre-back in Pascal Struijk as well as bringing off Patrick Bamford, who holds the ball up far better than Eddie Nketiah, and Leeds were punished as Neil Harris’ side scored two more goals out of nothing.

The Argentine should, therefore, be subject to criticism rather than Casilla, who has otherwise been a standout performer in recent matches, though he should reconsider how often he leaves his own goal.

Meanwhile, some fans’ fears that Marcelo Bielsa winning the Championship Manager of the Month for November may have been realised after Leeds dropped points for the first time in eight matches.

Leeds loanee Ben White likely to stay at Leeds beyond January, says Phil Hay

Speaking on the Phil Hay Show, The Athletic journalist has given a positive update on the future of Ben White, suggesting that he looks likely to stay beyond January.

What’s he said?

White has been imperious for Leeds this season, earning various compliments from fans and quickly becoming one of the very best defenders in the Championship.

He won the supporters’ Player of the Month award all the way back in August and he hasn’t looked back since.

The 22-year-old has been part of a backline that’s conceded just 13 goals in 22 matches. In the process, White has won a mightily impressive 3.4 aerial duels per outing as well as achieving 2.5 interceptions.

Whether or not he is recalled by Brighton in January remains to be seen, but Hay has remained upbeat about Leeds’ chances of keeping his services until the end of the current campaign.

“The noise from Leeds is that they think he will be here until the end of the season. The noises from the Brighton end, similarly, seem to indicate that he will as well. You’d think that if somebody was about to go big and was looking to get it done next month that Brighton would have wind of that by now. I think they’ll be okay with that one.”

Promotion hopes boosted

There’s no doubting that Leeds would be in bother if Brighton recalled White in January. After all, they’d be left with just two senior options at centre half – Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi.

With that in mind and the performances he’s produced in west Yorkshire to date, he’d be a huge loss to their chances of going up and finally reaching the promised land of the Premier League.

Hay went onto state in his podcast that Leeds could be in the discussion for his permanent signature if they go up but with plenty of teams swooping around the defender, it would be a hotly contested race.

A number of top clubs have been credited with an interest in the youngster and that’s why there have been fears over his future next month in the first place.

Manchester United and Liverpool are two of the clubs in the race while Chelsea are another side to have thought about a potential move.

However, based on Hay’s quotes, it looks as though that won’t happen until next summer at the very earliest. This can only be positive for Marcelo Bielsa and his side.

Southampton: Ralph Hasenhuttl pinpoints turning point in the Saints’ campaign

Ralph Hasenhuttl has pinpointed the 9-0 defeat to Leicester as a turning point in Southampton’s campaign.

Things looked extremely bleak at St Mary’s back at the end of October, when Leicester turned up on the south coast and equalled the largest ever Premier League victory with a 9-0 win, a result that embarrassed the Saints in front of their own supporters.

Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez both scored hat-tricks as Brendan Rodgers’ side went into the half-time break 5-0 up, and while some teams may have crumbled after a result like that, Hasenhuttl has instead navigated a turnaround.

What did he say?

Hasenhuttl told Sky Sports: “When you see life after a 9-0 defeat, then you lose any fear you may have as a manager because you get a signal from the club they believe in what you are doing.

“I never really thought about the pressure on me, but what I could do was to try to take it off the team.

“And the way we developed our game after that experience and where we are in the table now is the best response we could have given.”

Hard to argue with Hasenhuttl

The former RB Leipzig boss is spot on.

When you suffer a defeat as humiliating as the Saints did, what more do you have to lose?

Instead of moping around and feeling sorry for themselves, Southampton instead manoeuvred themselves into a much better position in the Premier League as they currently sit 15th with 22 points to their name, compared to 18th place with eight points after the Leicester thrashing.

Since that game, the Saints have collected an impressive 14 points out of a possible 30, and it is particularly interesting to hear Hasenhuttl pinpoint the 9-0 defeat as a positive moment instead of a negative one.

Can you score at least 80% on this Ultimate Premier League Quiz? Test your knowledge now…

It is a testament to the Austrian’s managerial qualities as well as his squad’s attitude that they managed to channel such a heavy loss into a catalyst for an upturn in form, and the challenge now is to keep that momentum going – only four points separate the Saints from the bottom three.

In other news, this Southampton target would help Hasenhuttl kill two birds with one stone…

Bayern Munich fail in loan bid for Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha

According to Sport BILD’s Christian Falk, Bayern Munich have failed in their pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha.

What’s the word, then?

It seems that the Bavarian outfit wanted to seal a loan move for Palace’s star in January but the clubs could not agree on a deal.

For that reason, BILD have deemed this transfer impossible since both parties were having difficulties coming to terms.

Bayern’s idea was to borrow the 27-year-old forward for the remainder of the season but with this new development, Daily Mail have also stated that the German giants are likely to try again in the summer.

Zaha is valued at £80m by his club, as per the same source, and is wanted in January by the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

Verdict

A loan move for Zaha would’ve been perfect for Bayern Munich at this point.

The loss of Kingsley Coman to another serious injury may well have prompted them to try their luck with Palace’s superstar in the first place.

With ten goals and ten assists in 2018/19 and three of each in the current campaign, Zaha looks like a solid option for their forward line.

And with his pace and dribbling ability – seeing that he averages 5.1 dribbles per game in the Premier League – he could potentially fill in the void left by their injured ace.

Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings….

But maybe there is a silver lining in this failed bid as we know Die Roten are fond of Manchester City’s Leroy Sane and, with Zaha likely not arriving, maybe they can focus their attention on Pep Guardiola’s star instead.

Granted, he too is currently out with an injury, similarly to Coman, but managed to bag 16 goals and 18 assists in the previous campaign, proving that he’s an even better option than the Palace man.

Still, it remains to be seen who Bayern go for in the end and how successful they can actually be in their pursuit.

In other news, Zaha’s superagent has recently been trying to get him to sign for a different club than Bayern Munich…

Man Utd fans discuss reports Paul Pogba is expected to leave this summer

So the Paul Pogba saga could finally be over.

The France World Cup winner was the subject of intense transfer speculation last summer, with reports linking him with a possible move to the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus.

He then further fuelled the fire by admitting that he was open to experiencing a new challenge, before later revealing there was still a question mark over his long-term future at Old Trafford.

Now, Sky Sports claim Pogba is “likely” to leave the club this coming summer, with Madrid and Juventus said to be chasing his signature. The report claims the Red Devils want to keep the midfielder until the end of the season due to a “lack of replacements available on the market in January”.

Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Man Utd’s history in the January transfer window?

After hearing about the latest update on the Frenchman’s future, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation, with some expressing their frustrations at seeing this story rear its head again.

Some fans revealed they would be relieved if Pogba does end up leaving the club in the summer, with one supporter in particular claiming “the sooner he goes, the better”.

A couple of fans of the Manchester side however seemed to take the side of Pogba, and appeared to understand why he would want to leave Old Trafford.

More than anything, what Manchester United perhaps need the most is a bit of clarity surrounding their French talisman. His very public comments last summer only served to fuel the speculation that he would be leaving, and this season has seen him suffer injury after injury.

This latest update on his future – if concrete – will allow both the club and its fans to finally move on from a transfer saga that has completely engulfed them over the last few months.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fans slam this ace after his shocking display against Wolves.
