Tottenham could look to offload Victor Wanyama in the summer

Tottenham Hotspur learnt that Manchester City stand in their way of reaching a Champions League semi-final on Friday in one of the mouth-watering ties of the competition. Mauricio Pochettino’s side will know that they will need to be at their very best to be able to edge past their Premier League rivals.

And, for one man, it could potentially be the last time that he is involved in the Champions League with Spurs.

What’s the News?

According to a report by The Daily Mail, Victor Wanyama is just one of a number of players that Tottenham could look to offload in the summer.

The Kenya international, who is valued at £22.5million (Transfermarkt), has struggled to return to the form he once showed before he suffered his serious knee injury.

The Verdict:

The writing appears to have been on the wall for Wanyama and his Tottenham career (The Daily Mail), as he has seriously struggled to make an impact upon his return and injuries have played a huge role in his lack of recent opportunities.

With Harry Winks continually putting in a number of solid performances, and with Eric Dier seemingly favoured over the Kenyan when fit, his chances have really diminished and have seen him make just five starts in all competitions this season.

The 27-year-old has been an excellent servant for the north London outfit since his move from Southampton and became a clear fan favourite after he built an impressive partnership alongside Mousa Dembele.

When fully-fit, Wanyama has plenty of energy and can dominate the space in between the two penalty boxes with the intensity he has in his play, which could make him an excellent option for a team currently in the middle of the Premier League table.

However, as for Tottenham, it would appear that he could be entering the final few months of his time in north London.

Tottenham fans, what do you make of the news regarding Wanyama? Do you think Spurs should keep him beyond the summer or are they right to potentially offload him now? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.

Aston Villa Injury News: Axel Tuanzebe provides huge update on fitness

[ad_pod ]

Axel Tuanzebe has revealed that he could make his Aston Villa return in the club’s home Championship fixture against Blackburn Rovers on March 30.

What’s the update?

Tuanzebe told Villa’s official website:

“It’s really good to be back. I’m at a stage where I’m building my fitness in order to be ready for the Blackburn game.

“When you’re out with a bone injury there’s not a lot you can do but rest. It’s been a long process of healing. But I’m back in full training now and doing my extras – doing everything I can to be ready to play.

“The Blackburn game gives me the chance to build up the lungs and the legs and get ready for the run of games that the Championship requires. It’s great to be back around the lads and I’m ready to go again for a big finish to the season.”

Tuanzebe has been unavailable for selection since picking up a foot injury during Villa’s 2-2 draw with Stoke City in the Championship on December 15.

The 21-year-old was sent back to his parent club Manchester United to recover, but he returned to Villa earlier this month.

The centre-back has revealed that he could be ready for Villa’s next game with Blackburn, although it remains to be seen whether head coach Dean Smith throws the England Under-21 international straight back into action.

How big of a boost is it for Villa?

Huge. Absolutely massive. Tuanzebe had a shaky start to the campaign, but was switched to central defence upon Smith’s arrival as head coach.

Between the start of October and middle of December, the on-loan Man United ace was excellent for Villa.

Injuries to the likes of Tommy Elphick and James Chester means that Kortney Hause has recently been moved from left-back to central defence to play alongside Tyrone Mings.

But the thought of Mings – who has been excellent since arriving from Bournemouth – operating alongside a fit and hungry Tuanzebe will be very exciting for the Villa fans.

A brilliant run of form has seen Villa move into the playoff positions in the Championship and the return of Tuanzebe is a monumental boost.

Tottenham fans in hysterics over rival supporter tweet

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have reacted with genuine humour to a tweet from a West Ham United supporter claiming that the London Stadium is better than Spurs’ newly-opened ground.

The first game was played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, as the club’s Under-18 team beat Southampton 3-1.

While the capacity at the stadium was capped, there was a feeling of relief at finally leaving Wembley and amazement at seeing the world-class architecture now present in north London.

However, as is often the case with football, rival supporters have been quick to give their takes on social media.

West Ham, of course, moved into the London Stadium in the summer of 2016 and one fan expressed his belief that the Irons’ ground is better than Spurs’ new home.

That take, predictably, led to a number of Tottenham fans piling in on the tweet and deriding the opinion.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

Fixture in Focus: How the key figures reacted to Liverpool vs Tottenham

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham managed to recover from a late Mo Salah goal to clinch a 2-2 draw at Anfield last season but they had no such luck on this occasion after the Egyptian’s header inadvertently found its way into the net via a combination of Hugo Lloris and Toby Alderweireld.

It was a gut-wrenching result for the visitors to accept and a priceless and potentially title-deciding one for the jubilant hosts.

In the aftermath of proceedings, there were plenty of intriguing reactions to dissect from both players and managers.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up a handful of some of the most thought-provoking and pertinent quotes from the weekend.

Moussa Sissoko

Moussa Sissoko was at the core of Tottenham’s attacking endeavours as the game progressed, with his intelligent one-twos and engine allowing him to cut through the core of Liverpool’s midfield.

In a turn of events which seemed tailor-made for Sissoko to complete his incredible transition into a Spurs hero, the all-action midfielder blazed over with a wild left-footed strike.

In the aftermath of the game, Sissoko took the fall for his teammates (via RMC Sport): “I blame myself for this defeat.”

Noble, selfless and humble, his words are refreshing and rare in the modern game. Some fans, of course, will be inclined to share his sentiments, while plenty of sympathisers will instead unleash the full force of their anger at Lloris.

Nobody actually expected you to score anyway, Moussa.

Hugo Lloris

Speaking of Lloris, there is an element of Déjà vu in the post-match comments from the Spurs stopper.

Just as his compatriot did, the Frenchman appeared to accept responsibility for the defeat after his mistake resulted in the dramatic winning goal (via Sky Sports).

“When you are a goalkeeper, you know the responsibility. It’s like this. Of course you question yourself

“The good thing is that you know there is another game in three days, so you need to switch off about today and prepare the next game. I think it’s the best way to forget.

“I tried to catch the ball twice but unfortunately there was no bounce, it bounced straight to the shin of Toby, and then what happened, happened. The luck was probably on the opponent’s side today.”

Another Spursy moment provided by Lloris on the big stage.

How many chances will he get before Pochettino’s patience runs empty?

Jurgen Klopp

Klopp is a manager who has been celebrated for his ‘heavy metal’ brand of ruthless counter-attacking football, but Liverpool’s title challenge has notably been built on their ability to win ugly when the roaring heavy metal approach has struggled to hit the right notes.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Klopp had something to say about how his side’s style has differed this season.

“It feels like we always have to apologise a little bit that because of the football last season and stuff like that, because people always want the 100 per cent package.

“We had to find a way to win football games much more often than in the past. So until now it kind of worked, we didn’t score less goals than last year, I think. I don’t have the numbers in my mind but for sure not a lot. It’s all good.”

As Klopp has alluded to, as long as the points keep flowing there’s no reason to criticise the aesthetics behind the results, especially at this stage in the season.

Mauricio Pochettino

Pochettino was very much interested in underlining the fact that Tottenham’s Champions League hopes rest in their hands, while some special praise was reserved for a group of players who have been operating under unprecedented circumstances (via Sky Sports).

“Now we start a mini-league, with seven games ahead, in the top four it is in our hands. With all the circumstances happening this season, they are more than heroes, and we need to keep the trust and confidence, and of course we are going to fight to be in the Champions League.”

If Spurs manage to maintain their place in the top-four and overcome Manchester City in the semi-final of the Champions League, the season will have to be regarded as a resounding success.

Look at him now: Matt Derbyshire and Blackburn Rovers

Reflecting on the career of Matt Derbyshire, you could safely say that is has had it’s ups and down, bumps and bruises, commiserations and jubilations along the way.

Despite emerging as one of the country’s most promising talents, the former Football League man finds himself a very long way from home now and a far sight from his days as a prospect star – but, by his own admission, he does not mind (as per Planet Football).

How Derbyshire came to be is a classic tale of boy achieving dream. The forward had been a Blackburn man his whole life; born there, raised there, taught how to play there and found his love for the beautiful game there. It was only right that he also made his career there, and that is exactly what he did in 2003 – slotting straight into the academy system from humble non-league side Great Harwood.

Clubs are always careful when exposing their most promising assets to the melee of first-team football too soon through fear of burnout and other such complications. So Matt Derbyshire had to wait for his big moment. First, he found himself tested in the second tier playing for Plymouth Argyle where minutes were hard to come by and despite making 12 appearances failed to register a single goal. Lesser players may have been overcome with disappointment with that embarrassing showing, but Derbyshire jumped back on the horse and targeted League Two Wrexham next. Clearly having learned from his previous experience, the Englishman bagged an impressive 12 times in 16 league games. He was ready.

Or was he?

In his opening season of Premier League football he only managed a paltry five goals in 22 appearances. The following year was not to be any more fruitful either. With exotic talents hailing from far and wide in Roque Santa Cruz, Benni McCarthy and Carlos Villanueva, the boy next door found it difficult to really establish himself in the side.

He may have scored twice against Manchester United at Old Trafford but as soon as Sam Allardyce arrived on the scene, the young lad from Blackburn’s dream was over.

‘We all know Big Sam and I won’t take anything away from him, but I went from playing every week to being fifth-choice striker,’ he recalls (via Daily Mail)

‘He said I had to fight for my place, but I knew and we all know what centre-forwards he likes, the one big man up front.’

For the man who scored one of the opening goals at the ‘new Wembley’ (as per The Guardian), some may consider his career trajectory to be a little underwhelming. From the point he was exiled from the Blue and Whites’ squad, he spent time in Greece with Olympiakos, then back to England with Birmingham, Nottingham Forest and Oldham Athletic. After bouncing around the lower tiers of English football, however, his time was up. From Rotherham, where he was frozen out by former manager Alan Stubbs, he moved his family 3000 miles away to most unlikely of locations – Cyprus.

Derbyshire now turns out for Omonia Nicosia having been bought by former Newcastle man John Carver, and with a tally of 50 goals in 84 games we think it is fair to say he has found his level.
