Hall sustained the injury during Newcastle's 2-0 defeat at Anfield in February and will miss the Carabao Cup final next weekend. He has established himself as Eddie Howe's first-choice left-back this season and the news will force a defensive reshuffle on a highly-anticipated occasion for the club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Hall is the latest addition to a list of absentees for next Sunday's showdown, including winger Anthony Gordon, who is suspended after being sent off in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton at the weekend. Jamaal Lascelles is a long-term absentee, while there are concerns over Sven Botman, Alexander Isak and Kieran Trippier.

  • WHAT NEWCASTLE SAID

A Newcastle statement read: "Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall will miss the rest of the 2024-25 season after sustaining an injury to a bone in his foot. The 20-year-old was injured during the Magpies' Premier League fixture at Liverpool. Following a scan and advice from a specialist, Lewis will undergo surgery before a period of rehabilitation with the club's medical team."

    WHAT NEXT FOR NEWCASTLE?

Tino Livramento is Newcastle's only natural full-back who has regularly featured and is fully fit, with Trippier nursing a back problem and Hall now ruled out. The situation could see Howe turn to left-back Matt Targett, who has only made four appearances this season, or move Dan Burn back to the left-hand side of his defence. It is far from ideal ahead of the Wembley showdown, where the Premier League's current top scorer Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold will likely be lining up on Liverpool's right.

Nottingham Forest loan flop is now "world-class" & worth £50m after leaving

Nottingham Forest have endured a rapid progression in such a short period of time under Nuno Espírito Santo in the last few months, achieving the unthinkable so far this campaign.

The Reds currently sit in fifth place after a run of five wins, four draws and two losses – accumulating 19 points in the process and sitting ahead of the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

As a result of their displays, striker Chris Wood claimed the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for October, with boss Nuno winning the Manager of the Month award after going unbeaten.

The main difference between the last campaign and the current one is the significant improvement within the backline, conceding just ten goals in the opening 11 matches – with only Arsenal shipping fewer.

Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo have been pivotal to the huge turnaround, forming an excellent partnership at the heart of the defence and looking real bargains for their combined £27m.

It’s a noticeable difference from a couple of seasons ago, when the Reds struggled defensively, shipping countless goals in the process.

Nottingham Forest’s defence in 2022/23

After the play-off victory the season prior, it was crucial that the hierarchy invested in the playing squad to give then-boss Steve Cooper the best chance of securing survival in the club’s first season back in the Premier League in over two decades.

Over £150m was spent all over the pitch to try and provide that added quality, with the likes of Taiwo Awoniyi and Morgan Gibbs-White still remaining as part of the first team.

Morgan Gibbs-White for England

However, the defence was still desperately lacking, with a trio of Scott McKenna, Joe Worrall and Steve Cook the main options during the opening stages of the campaign.

They all played a key role in the promotion-winning season, but it became evident that they simply weren’t at the level required to make a positive impact on England’s top flight.

In the opening weeks, the Reds shipped six against Manchester City, along with five against Arsenal – looking completely up against it in their battle for survival.

January came around, with Felipe joining from Atlético Madrid transforming the backline and helping Cooper and his side get across the line, producing some key results towards the back end of the season – including a 1-0 win over Arsenal at the City Ground.

Forest ended up conceding 68 times during that season, but still managed to get themselves over the line, with Nuno subsequently able to build on the foundations that were laid that year.

It could’ve been hugely different though, had Cooper utilised one player who arrived in the East Midlands with high hopes of being a success but ultimately never had the opportunity to showcase his ability.

The player who Forest must regret not keeping hold of

Centre-back Loic Bade arrived at the club on loan with an option to buy from French side Rennes, adding that needed quality to the Reds’ defensive unit.

However, his move to Nottingham was a disaster, failing to appear at all that campaign, before being recalled by his parent side and shipped to LaLiga side Sevilla for the remainder of the season.

The 24-year-old has since joined the Spanish side permanently, winning the Europa League during the same season – highlighting the nature of the mistake made by the former Forest boss in not starting him during his time on Trentside.

He’s also become a regular in the French U23 setup, featuring at this summer’s Olympic Games, before subsequently losing in the final to Spain.

Bade, who’s since been dubbed “world-class” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has made 69 appearances for his current employers, attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool, who are willing to negotiate a deal despite his £50m release clause.

Forest have often conducted exemplary business in the market, as seen with their current centre-back partnership of Murillo and Milenkovic.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 33-year-old midfielder, who joined United in 2022, signed a three-year deal following a short but impressive stint at Brentford, which marked his return to professional football after recovering from a cardiac arrest suffered during Euro 2020 while representing Denmark.

Since joining the Red Devils, Eriksen has made 99 appearances, scoring seven goals and playing a crucial role in helping the club secure the FA Cup last season under Erik ten Hag. However, reports suggest that United will not be offering an extension, leaving the experienced midfielder in search of a new club ahead of the 2025-26 season.

  • Getty Images Sport

    WHAT ERIKSEN SAID

Speaking to , Eriksen revealed that he is yet to decide on his future.

“I haven’t thought about it that much. It’s the same principle as last time, the contract expires in the summer, so in my head I’m prepared to find something new. I’m actually fine with that, whatever it is, it’s not something I’ve decided yet,” he said.

"Before my cardiac arrest, I spent years in England, then moved to Inter and thought I'd never come back. Two years later, I was back in England, and now it's almost been four years here. Careers don’t always follow a set plan. I don’t have a checklist of things I must accomplish—I’ll take things as they come and decide what’s best for me and my family."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

One possible destination for Eriksen could be Ajax, the club where he spent five successful years before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2013. Last summer, Ajax were linked with an interest in bringing him back, and their sporting director, Alex Kroes, confirmed that discussions had taken place. When asked about the possibility of a return to the Dutch club, Eriksen refused to dismiss the idea.

“No, I’m not closing the door on anything,” Eriksen explained. “I’ll see what comes up and whether it’s something that fits. That was last summer. We’ll have to see where they stand this summer. Of course, it’s also about the interest from the other side and not just from the player.”

  • DID YOU KNOW?

While Eriksen remains open to new challenges, he has ruled out a return to Denmark's Superliga or a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.

"I am not going to the USA – we are not going that far," he confirmed. "We would like to stay in Europe, but it is too early to go home to Denmark. I feel like I have some good years abroad left."

He has taken in just three cup appearances for the Eagles, leading United States coach Mauricio Pochettino to admit that “the competition is open” when it comes to battle for starting duties between Turner, Patrick Schulte and Zack Steffen.

  • WHAT MATT TURNER SAID

Turner has said of the challenge that he faces when it comes to nailing down a spot between the sticks: “I wouldn't say that any position on this team right now is set in stone. I think there's probably an open competition all over the pitch.

“Obviously my club situation isn't ideal right now, but I'm giving every opportunity that I have to play the utmost importance and trying to put good performances together, just control what I can right now and then let the chips fall where they may.”

  • Getty

    DID YOU KNOW?

Turner remains under contract at Forest, but concedes that he may need to find another move in the summer transfer window. He added on his present and future: “Whenever I come to the national team I want to play, I want to put the crest on and have the responsibility of being the number one. But at the same time, I understand that my club situation right now isn't the best. So I have to maybe make some changes in that department if I want to play more consistently.

“But again, if I just continue to control the things that I can, play well when I have the chances with the U.S., I'll be happy with the hat I can put into the ring.”

49ers send Leeds officials to join race to sign "exciting" £5m sensation

Not looking to miss out on a rising star, the 49ers Enterprises have now reportedly sent Leeds United officials to join the race in pursuit of a rising star in Scottish football, who has attracted plenty of interest as of late.

Leeds transfer news

Leeds know all about trying to keep hold of a future star, of course, having failed to prevent Archie Gray’s exit to Tottenham Hotspur in a summer full of exits a few months ago. Now, they’ll want to flip the script and land a young sensation of their own in the transfer market.

Those at Elland Road are in a strong position to convince reinforcements too, given that they now sit top of the Championship in the early race for title glory and subsequent promotion.

When the January transfer window arrives, the Yorkshire club have the opportunity to welcome the additions that could all but seal promotion to the Premier League, before then turning their attention towards future stars for Daniel Farke’s side.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, the 49ers have now sent Leeds officials to join the race for Lennon Miller, who has been priced at a minimum £5m by Motherwell as they look to at least benefit from the Scottish sensation’s potential exit.

Leeds have made an "unbelievable signing" who could be sold for big money

The Leeds United ace has already broken records during his short stint at Elland Road.

Those at Elland Road aren’t the only ones interested, however. In fact, a whole host of English clubs are reportedly chasing Miller’s signature, including Manchester United, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Championship rivals Sunderland. With that said, it could be an impressive coup if Leeds managed to welcome the 18-year-old midfielder.

A player who may make up for Gray’s exit, Leeds should go all out to sign Miller if they’re given the opportunity when 2025 arrives.

"Exciting" Miller could make up for Gray's departure

Injuries to midfielders Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev caused quite the headache for Farke, although Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell have been brilliant in their absence. A situation which highlighted Leeds’ lack of depth in the middle of the park at the time, Miller’s arrival wouldn’t just be one for the future.

The teenager has starred in Motherwell’s senior side this season, reaching four goals and four assists to prove that he no longer belongs in academy football. Now, he looks destined for his biggest move yet.

As a result of his continued rise over the last year or so, Miller has attracted plenty of interest and praise, with most of that coming from Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell, who told reporters as relayed by The Herald earlier this year: “I just think he is a really exciting talent. If he was playing at one of the other clubs I would be waxing lyrical about him as well because I do get excited when you see really good footballers in Scotland.

“It’s brilliant for us all to market and sell the product and the brand in this country. I am absolutely delighted that I feel we have got one of the top guys at his age and somebody that I believe can go on and have a real, real good future in the game.”

Man Utd plotting move to sign £20m playmaker who could replace Mason Mount

Manchester United are among the teams interested in signing a £20 million midfielder next month, according to a new report. The January transfer window opens in just a couple of weeks time, and the Red Devils will hope the sudden departure of Dan Ashworth will not affect their plans.

Man Utd transfer news

January could be a pivotal month for United, as INEOS may look to do some transfer business in the hope that it helps Ruben Amorim turn the club’s fortunes around. Ahead of what is normally a quiet transfer window for the Premier League side, they have already been linked with a few potential arrivals.

A new report has stated that United are looking to submit an offer to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in 2025. The centre-back’s contract at Selhurst Park expires in 2026, and United could look to use this to their advantage, as they plan to make a £33 million offer, which is below his £50 million price tag.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi celebrates

Another player the Red Devils are interested in signing from the Premier League is Heung-min Son. The Tottenham Hotspur attacker is someone United know very well and are reportedly interested in making a move for him in 2025, as his future continues to look uncertain with the London side.

But these are not the only players who are on United’s radar, as they also have a midfielder under consideration, and he could be a long-term replacement for an individual already at Old Trafford.

Man Utd plotting move to sign £20m starlet

According to Caught Offside, Manchester United are interested in a deal to sign Martin Baturina from Dinamo Zagreb. The 21-year-old is highly rated in the game, especially in his homeland of Croatia, with the report labelling him an “elite prospect”.

Baturina has become an important figure for his club and country in recent times, and his performances are now catching the attention of European heavyweights. This report states that Paris Saint-Germain are working on a deal for Baturina and have been for a while. They are keen to get a deal done for around 25 million euros, which is roughly £20 million, as soon as possible. However, United are also keen on the Croatian international, along with many other Premier League teams.

Teams such as Manchester City, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Barcelona are also interested, but while United are longer term admirers, Zagreb are adamant that he isn’t for sale.

Baturina’s arrival at Old Trafford could spell the end for Mason Mount, as the Englishman has struggled since joining the Red Devils and could be one that is let go by Amorim if his performances don’t improve.

Ange has found Spurs’ new Soldado in "astonishing" transfer flop

There’s no way to sugarcoat it; the last few weeks have been abysmal for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou’s side recovered from their shock loss to Ipswich Town by hammering Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad, but instead of going on a run after such an incredible result, the North Londoners have seemingly fallen off a cliff.

They’ve drawn at home to AS Roma and Fulham, lost to Bournemouth and Chelsea and then last night, they drew away to Rangers in a game they really should have lost.

Bar Dejan Kulusevski and Fraser Forster, the whole team were dire, but one player in particular stood out for all the wrong reasons and could be Postecoglou’s own Roberto Soldado.

Soldado's Spurs career

When it comes to transfer flops at Spurs in the last 20 years or so, one name that will always pop up, rightly or wrongly, is striker Roberto Soldado.

The Spaniard joined the North Londoners in the summer of 2013 for a then-club-record fee of £26m, and while that was a lot of money, it seemed reasonable at the time as he’d just scored 57 goals and provided 11 assists in 97 appearances across the prior two campaigns for Valencia.

However, while there were certainly glimpses of brilliance during his time in N17, like a couple of hat-tricks, the Valencia-born poacher just couldn’t get to grips with life in the Premier League and went from one of the most dangerous forwards in Europe to below-average at best.

Moreover, due to the disconnect between expectation and reality, the Spaniard became something of a scapegoat for the team’s troubles, with journalist Sam Tighe describing him as the “flop of the season.”

This simply put more pressure on him to perform, and as every mistake was magnified it became something of a spiral until he lost his place in the team and was eventually sold to Villarreal two years after joining the club.

Roberto Soldado

It would be hard to describe his time at the club and transfer as anything other than a failure, and now it looks like Postecoglou could have his own Soldado in the current squad.

Postecoglou's own Soldado

So, to get straight to the point, the player in question is Timo Werner.

The first thing to say is that due to him being on loan and not a club-record signing, the pressure on the German to perform for the Lilywhites isn’t exactly the same as the pressure on Sodaldo.

However, unlike the Spaniard, the winger has shown very little quality at all during his time at the club, and is earning a whopping £165k-per-week, so he has received just as much criticism from fans and pundits alike.

This criticism, based primarily around his simply abysmal finishing, is the crux of the reason why he’s become the club’s new scapegoat and, therefore, arguably Postecoglou’s version of the former Valencia ace.

However, the manager is the man who made or agreed to the “astonishing” decision, per talkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend, to re-sign him in the summer, so the criticism of the 28-year-old is partly on him as well.

However, the former Chelsea ace was so dismal against Rangers that even the Australian couldn’t ignore it.

He ruthlessly took him off at half-time and doubled down in his post-match press conference, telling the media that the German’s performance “wasn’t acceptable,” which could be the most scathing he’s been about a particular player since taking the job last year.

Ultimately, while Werner doesn’t have a hefty price tag hanging over his head, he is on mega money and has been even more woeful in front of goal, which has seen him become the team’s current scapegoat, akin to what eventually happened to the Spaniard at Spurs.

Former Bayern Munich player and legend Franck Ribery provided his thoughts on his countryman Michael Olise, who has been truly impressive in his debut season at the Allianz Arena since arriving from Crystal Palace. In a recent interview, Ribery urged Olise to "understand the club" if he wanted to succeed at Bayern and explained what he could do in order to elevate himself to become one of the best players in the world.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Olise has been among Bayern's best players this season, scoring 13 goals and assisting a further 14 in just 41 games across all competitions. While he has certainly been a success on the pitch, some incidents have indicated that he is yet to fully settle in Germany. Case in point, his blunt interview during his presentation, or when he remained silent during a post-match interview where team-mate Jamal Musiala answered all the questions. More recently, Olise stood out for his lack of engagement at a festive club event during Christmas, refusing to join his team-mates as they sang the classic 'Jingle Bells'.

  • WHAT FRANCK RIBERY SAID

When asked by if Olise has the Bayern gene, Ribery provided his opinions, saying: "I can't say yet, because he hasn't even been at the club for a year. Olise is still young; this is his first time at a big club. I'll be honest: I didn't know Olise before he came to Bayern. So far, he's doing very well, including with the national team. I've discovered him now, and I enjoy watching him. But Olise needs to keep up his performances if he wants to become one of the best players in the world: not just for one year, but for three, four, five! Here, too, it's about mentality."

Later, Ribery was asked if Olise needed to learn German in order to succeed at Allianz Arena, to which the iconic winger replied: "Yes, absolutely. Olise needs to learn German to understand the club. It's also a sign of respect. I can only advise him: He should try, say things, even if the words are wrong. Otherwise, he's too often withdrawn and not open. I met him once at Sabener Street: I sense that he wants to learn and succeed."
