Michael Burgess finds new lease of life with century for Warwickshire

Jake Libby retains fine touch for Worcestershire on a day to celebrate second chances

George Dobell07-May-2021It was a day for second chances at Edgbaston. It’s a generalisation but if, as a cricketer, you have found yourself released by Leicestershire in recent years, it’s probably a sign that it’s time to go and do something else. That’s not meant to sound harsh. But, over the last decade or so, the club has become something of a final stop for players of a certain age – think Charlie Shreck, Michael Carberry, Mark Pettini, Neil Dexter, Mark Cosgrove, Paul Horton, Matthew Hoggard, Chris Wright et al – and, while there are a few examples of players proving there can be life beyond being released by the club (Darren Stevens and Ned Eckersley spring to mind) they are the sea turtles making it back to the beach on which they were born.Michael Burgess is the latest to buck the trend. His century here was his first in first-class cricket for three years and suggested that he could yet enjoy a successful career at this level.Related

Warwickshire is actually Burgess’ fourth first-class county. After developing at Surrey – albeit without making a first-team appearance – he was signed by Leicestershire and made 98 in his first first-class innings for the club against the touring Sri Lankans in 2016.But, when he was released a few months later without playing another innings for the club, he admits he experienced some dark times. He took a job in teaching for three months and tried to come to terms with life beyond cricket.”I thought my career was done at that point,” he says now. “It was a tough time. But I got a job at the Royal Hospital School in Ipswich and, in between teaching a bit of PE, football and cricket, I trained and netted with [former Essex allrounder] Graham Napier, who also teaches there.”Then he had some fortune. Having been given a trial at Sussex, he saw Ben Brown suffer a concussion in a pre-season warm-up game and was drafted into the side. He did pretty nicely, too, but with Brown also likely to reclaim the gloves eventually, was forced to battle it out as a specialist batter. When it became apparent that Warwickshire were looking for a replacement for Tim Ambrose, he jumped at the chance to claim a role as keeper. Warwickshire promised him an extended run in the side and do not even have another keeper on the staff at present. All of which sounds good and well. But, going into this match, he was averaging 12.66 this season and doubts were starting to mount. Dan Lincoln, a 25-year-old who has played a few games for Middlesex, has been brought into the second XI on trial. Burgess really needed this innings.Very nicely he played, too. While his strength is square and through the covers on the off side – an area in which he evokes memories of Mike Gatting – here he also demonstrated a sound defence, left well and was far better off his legs than he has been previously. He was one of only two men in the Warwickshire side to make more than 32 and helped his side to a third batting bonus point before being the last man out. Worcestershire were limited to two bowling bonus points.”Yes, potentially, I really do need to make this [time at Warwickshire] work,” Burgess admitted afterwards. “I’m trying not to think like that, but of course those thoughts come into your head.”I love cricket. I want to play cricket for a long, long time. I’ve had experience of a life outside cricket and I realise how lucky we are to come to Edgbaston and call it a workplace.”It’s been a tough month. This is a bit of a relief. I’ve put in some hard graft to get here so today was really sweet.”Jake Libby’s story is slightly different. But by the time he left Nottinghamshire, at the end of 2019, he averaged 26.82 in first-class cricket for the club and looked as if he might not make it at this level. But Worcestershire’s coach, Kevin Sharp, had long been an admirer. He had seen him make 170 for the Notts second XI in 2017 and knew this was a player who had more to offer. He jumped at the chance to sign him.It has proved an astute move. Libby, a compact, patient opener with a back-foot punch so gorgeous it might have been played by Sachin, is now averaging 70.21 for Worcestershire in first-class cricket and requires 17 more in the second innings to record his 1,000th first-class run for the club in just his 10th match. Only five men have scored more than his 485 runs this season.Warwickshire may be a little frustrated, though. Not only did they see Tim Bresnan, at slip, put down a relatively simple chance offered by Daryl Mitchell on one off a perfect Liam Norwell outswinger, but Libby was somewhat fortunate to see one fly just over short leg when a short ball cramped him for room.Later Jake Haynes, very much a young man at the start of his career, suggested he was the latest in an impressive line of home-grown Worcestershire players who could enjoy a long career. Son of former all-rounder Gavin, Haynes demonstrated a calm temperament and some elegant strokes in recording the highest score of his first-class career to date. He dealt with a fiery spell from Olly Stone as well as anyone.Given his injury record, there was some concern when Stone left the pitch in late afternoon in conversation with the physio. The club say he was suffering from nothing more than a mild stomach ache, however, and insist he will be fine for the rest of the game. During that spell he dismissed Libby, smartly held at short leg, after going round the wicket and cramping him for room, while Brett D’Oliveira was fortunate to see a bouncer fended off from his throat fly off the handle of the bat over the slip cordon for four. It was further evidence that Stone has the pace, hostility, control and skill for Test cricket. After his well-documented injury issues, Stone, too, may feel he is enjoying a second chance in the game. On this evidence, he, Burgess and Libby are all seizing that opportunity.

Mbappe's missed penalty at Anfield on Wednesday night condemned the European champions to defeat in the Champions League. WHAT ANCELOTTI SAID

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Ancelotti said: "It has happened many times that forwards have a hard time scoring. There is a medicine which is to be patient. It is a difficult moment for him, especially after missing the penalty. Everyone has to support him. He may be a bit lacking in confidence. When things don't go your way, the idea you have to have is to play simple. It's a bit like this moment, but you can't judge him for missing a penalty. All players miss penalties. He has to keep working well. We have to be patient because he's an extraordinary player."

Ancelotti added: "Like the others, he fought, he competed, he didn't get many shots right, he missed the penalty and it's going to be a difficult moment, but he has the support of everyone.

"Missing a penalty in a game like that, the player is a little disappointed, but he has to look forward."

Rizwan, bowlers star in Multan Sultans' victory as chasing streak continues

With the state of a world at the moment, almost everyone craves a return to the way things were a couple of years ago. Watching Lahore Qalandars in the PSL on Friday, you might as well have been transported there for three hours after Multan Sultan walloped them by seven wickets with nearly four overs to spare, ending their perfect start to this season. It was a performance of overwhelming dominance from the increasingly irrepressible Mohammad Rizwan whose 49-ball 76 made light work of a chase of 157.The win was set up by the bowlers right at the start of the match after the Sultans won the toss and – guess what – decided to bowl. With Lahore opener Sohail Akhtar struggling for fluency, Sohail Khan and Shahnawaz Dhani’s plan to cramp Fakhar Zaman for room worked like a charm, stifling him before bringing the wicket. By the time the powerplay was done, the Qalandars had managed just 25, their lowest six-over total in PSL history. It was only Mohammad Hafeez, perhaps the only Pakistan batsman to match Rizwan for form at the moment, who propelled Lahore to a respectable total. He began by clobbering a six back over bowler Shahid Afridi’s head, who had a difficult day today.Hafeez went from strength to strength, bringing up his half-century of 27 balls, but a mix-up with Samit Patel led to his first dismissal of the tournament. There was no one to take over the mantle from him, and the Qalandars’ innings began to splutter from that moment. Joe Denly, Ben Dunk and Patel all failed to get their side to the sort of total that would challenge the Sultans, and while the early wickets of Chris Lynn and James Vince gave the Qalandars hope, it was only flickering.Star of the day
With the Sultans lacking a premium fast-bowling asset, Carlos Brathwaite has proven himself surprisingly useful, particularly in the first half of the innings. He was introduced as early as the fourth over today, and with his exotic mix of pace, angles, and length, kicked things off with a wicket maiden. Even Hafeez struggled to really get a hold of the West Indian, while Joe Denly often took several deliveries simply to get off strike against him. When he came on in the 14th over to bowl his final over, he broke an 89-run third-wicket partnership that looked to have set up the Qalandars for the finish, drawing Denly wide outside off stump to get him nicking off. It wasn’t bowling to set the heart racing, but Brathwaite’s intelligence did at least as much for the Sultans’ chances as Rizwan’s belligerence in the second half.Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez share a joke•PCB/PSL

Miss of the day
The Qalandars weren’t just ordinary with bat and ball today, but also in the field. Zaman’s struggles up top might have caught the headlines for how heavily the side relies on him, but it wasn’t the only department he was found wanting. There were two chances to put an end to the 110-run partnership between Sohaib Maqsood and Rizwan, with each of them allowed a reprieve by Zaman in the deep. When Maqsood sliced one to him, he opted for the safety of collecting it on the bounce, while Rizwan’s chance spooned straight into his hands and back out again a few overs later. It was a day Zaman will want to put out of his mind, and on that point, he’ll find the rest of his side in agreement.Honourable mention
Despite the Qalandars having little to smile about, there was still the obligatory moment of magic that Shaheen Afridi would conjure up, almost like it’s been written into his contract. In his first over, he had the out-of-form Chris Lynn facing up to him, a contest that would end by knockout in two balls. Lynn kept out the first one, an inswinging yorker, before being hopelessly outfoxed by a dream of a follow-up. Landing on middle a foot from the base of the stumps, it seamed ever so slightly towards off and away from the bat Lynn hopelessly brought down to fend it off. It would crash into off stump to create that most elegant spectacle, a cartwheeling off stump after an impact to its base, with a flummoxed batsman frozen just in front of it.Afridi followed it up with another wicket in the 15th over, though the one that removed Rizwan was more of a formality after the game was done. It produced one of the cosier moments of the game, with the 20-year old walking up to the man eight years his senior and giving him a pat on the head to acknowledge his efforts.

Despite United spending approximately £200 million ($261 million) during the summer transfer window to strengthen their squad, they find themselves in the lower half of the Premier League table after seven matches, sitting three places and two points behind Frank’s Brentford side.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United’s disappointing run has included several poor results, with their most recent home match resulting in a humbling 3-0 defeat to Tottenham last month. This weekend's fixture against Brentford is the Red Devils' first at Old Trafford since that loss, and the pressure on Ten Hag has only increased as the team has struggled to find consistency. Following that defeat, United drew back-to-back matches, first against Porto in the Champions League and then at Aston Villa, before heading into the international break.

  • WHAT THOMAS FRANK SAID

Despite the dwindling results, Frank believes that the growing criticism aimed at Ten Hag is unwarranted.

"It's incredible how much scrutiny he's had to face," he said. "As a head coach, I acknowledge how it feels to be in a situation like this. I think [the criticism] is too much. He's clearly a good coach, he's won two trophies in two seasons.

"But I understand how it is: if the team wins, the head coach is absolutely fantastic; if the team loses, the head coach is absolutely sh*t! Whereas it's probably somewhere in between. It's never only the head coach, or the players, or the fans, or the board – it's a combination of all of these things."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Interestingly, Frank himself has been mentioned as a potential successor to Ten Hag should United decide to make a managerial change. However, the Brentford boss was quick to dismiss such talk. In a recent interview with , Frank reiterated his happiness at Brentford but left the door slightly open for future opportunities.

“I’ve said many times I’m very happy here,” he said. “Who knows what happens in the future? I’m open, but right now, I’m just working hard every day to make Brentford better.”

Chelsea make approach to sign £85m star who’d become Maresca’s MVP

Todd Boehly’s recruitment record at Chelsea has certainly caught the eye, with close to £1bn spent on transfers since his arrival.

However, the individuals who’ve arrived have been rather hit or miss, particularly for the fees spent to attain them.

This has meant that this summer, some of those recent buys will look to be upgraded, especially with new boss Enzo Maresca arriving very soon.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a Blues transfer target that would suit the Italian's approach perfectly while also potentially becoming his most important player.

Chelsea look for a new number one

According to reports in Italy, Chelsea are keeping an eye on goalkeeper Diogo Costa ahead of a potential move this summer.

The report mentions that the Blues have made an approach for the Porto ace as they look to sign an upgrade on Robert Sanchez.

FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

The Portuguese club will sell Costa at the right price this summer, although at the moment he does reportedly boast a mighty release clause of £85m.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, they will face competition from other Premier League teams, including Manchester City.

Why Diogo Costa would be vital under Maresca

Costa is a name that most avid fans of European football will be aware of, as he’s widely regarded as "one of the best goalkeepers in world football" – a tag he's been provided with by many including journalist Zach Lowy.

The Portuguese shot-stopper has continued to impress this season, not just domestically but also in the Champions League.

Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

At just 24 years of age, the 'keeper has plenty of room for development, yet he’s already showcased his quality over his 33 starts in Liga Portugal, starting in between the sticks for the best defence in the division.

The number 99 is excellent at shot-stopping, hence why he’s been described as "superman” by football scout Jacek Kulig, and he’s always proactive, sweeping behind the backline to prevent the opponent from playing through balls.

However, as you can see above, it’s his ability with the ball at his feet that separates him from most goalkeepers.

Due to Maresca’s approach, which means that his man between the sticks simply has to be comfortable playing out from the back, even under pressure, Costa would be a fantastic buy for Chelsea.

Leicester manager Enzo Maresca.

Mads Hermansen took on the role last season at the Foxes, taking 53.8 touches and making 37.2 passes per game; that’s even more passes than Noni Madueke and Mykhaylo Mudryk make combined per game.

Whether it’s passing the ball within his own box, switching the play with a clipped pass to a full-back, or simply going direct, the Portugal number one can do it all and mirror what the Dane produced under the Italian, as shown by his immense pass accuracy.

For context, the Porto academy graduate even registered an assist in the Champions League last season, which highlights his extreme technical ability.

Given that both Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic aren’t the best in possession, the Blues may struggle to adapt to the style of play that the Italian demands.

Robert Sanchez for Chelsea.

Therefore, if Costa were to join, he’d surely become their most valuable and important player, as without him, the side wouldn’t function anywhere near as smoothly.

Regardless of whether Costa does sign, Chelsea will be on the lookout for a new stopper, and therefore, surely Boehly must attempt to acquire the best in the business.

Journalist says Tottenham leading Liverpool in race to sign £85m+ attacker

Tottenham are thought to be leading Liverpool in the race to sign an £85m+ forward, according to one journalist.

Tottenham transfer rumours

Tottenham, under Ange Postecoglou, ended the 2023/24 campaign sitting 5th in the Premier League. This is by no means a terrible achievement after losing Harry Kane last summer, however, it is clear Spurs' ability to score goals has been impacted by Kane's absence, with their 74 goals in 38 league games last term the lowest of the top-seven teams.

Tottenham more likely to sign £60m star ahead of Arsenal

This comes as a boost to Ange Postecoglou.

ByCharlie Smith Jun 1, 2024

Unsurprisingly, this has led to the north London outfit being linked with a lot of forward options heading into the 2024 summer transfer window. It was claimed at the beginning of the week that Tottenham have maintained their interest in RB Leipzig attacker Dani Olmo ahead of the summer.

Elsewhere, Spurs are among several Premier League teams to have 'asked' about Beskitas' latest wonderkid, Semih Kılıçsoy, while the capital outfit are "keeping an eye" on Sporting CP's star winger Marcus Edwards ahead of the summer window and are interested in Nottingham Forest's Callum Hudson-Odoi and could make an offer for the wide-man 'before 30 June.'

Tottenham leading Liverpool in race to sign £85m+ attacker

Now, an update on a long-term attacking target at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has emerged. The player in question? Santiago Gimenez.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez

The Feyenoord striker has been linked with a move to Liverpool this week, as the Reds look to add another forward to their squad. However, it is the view of one journalist at least that Tottenham will land the forward ahead of Arne Slot and co. Speaking to Rousing The Kop, journalist Graeme Bailey feels that Tottenham are currently "favourites" for Gimenez.

“I think Spurs like him a lot, they’ve been doing work on him. I’d be making them favourites in that race at the moment.

“I haven’t heard too much on Liverpool. I know there’s the links with Arne Slot but how much impact the manager’s going to have on the search for players, I don’t think Liverpool are built like that. They might be asking about his players but I don’t think he would drive that.”

Liverpool, unlike Tottenham, have Champions League football next term, while the player has also previously worked under Arne Slot, but if Bailey's comments are anything to go by, that will not play a part in Tottenham's chances of getting a deal for the 23-year-old over the line.

In terms of a fee for the Mexican hitman, 90min claim Feyenoord would want to see the record for a sale in the Eredivisie matched if they are to sell their star striker, with that figure currently standing as the £87m Manchester United paid for Antony in 2022.

Gimenez scored 26 goals and assisted eight in 41 outings for Feyenoord during the most recent campaign, including two goals and one assist in four Champions League ties.

Wolves right in the race for "outrageous" £24m Neto replacement

Wolverhampton Wanderers have a lot to sort out over the next few months. Gary O'Neil deserves all the plaudits for his work at Molineux but a successful campaign fizzled out in the late stages and now it is imperative to move for signings capable of taking the team further next year.

Talks have already been held regarding the signing of Southampton's Che Adams, who is out of contract in one month, while Manchester City and Newcastle United are leading the charge to sign Wolves star Pedro Neto, who is valued at £60m.

Pedro Neto for Wolves

Much to do, but O'Neil has proved his credentials and given that the club are already lining up replacements for Neto, should he leave, there's plenty of cause for optimism.

Wolves lining up Neto replacement

According to Spanish outlets AS and Grada1 – via Sport Witness – Wolves are set to tussle with Aston Villa and West Ham United for the signing of Viktor Tsygankov, who has been a key part of Girona's stunning season, qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in their 94-year history (awaiting UEFA clearance due to shared ownership with Manchester City).

The Ukrainian is understood to have a market price of €28m (£24m) and is calmly evaluating his options ahead of the official opening of the transfer window.

How Viktor Tsygankov would fit in at Wolves

Tsykangov, who is 26 years old, has enjoyed something of a nomadic career but has showcased his quality throughout, with analyst Ben Mattinson calling him “seriously talented” at the start of the season and questioning how he is still performing under the radar.

The in-demand talent has been effective wherever he has played over the past five years, and while he has not been as potent in front of goal for Girona, he's hardly flattering to deceive with his performances, key to the top-four finish in La Liga and hailed for his "outrageous" skills by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Indeed, as per Sofascore, the right winger has created 11 big chances and completed 83% of his passes in the Spanish top flight this season, averaging one tackle and 3.5 ball recoveries per outing.

Neto, in comparison, chalked up nine assists and created seven big chances in the Premier League, only starting 18 matches during his injury-disrupted season, though it's easy to see that Tsygankov has the core qualities that could make him an excellent replacement.

As per FBref, Tsygankov ranks among the top 19% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists and the top 9% for clearances per 90, denoting his impressive mix of creative and industrious defensive attributes.

The £23k-per-week ace would be a worthy successor to a dynamic winger like Neto in this regard, who has been praised for his "absolutely incredible" technical ability by his manager but has also averaged four ball recoveries and 3.5 successful duels per game in the Premier League this term, highlighting his energy and tenacity.
