Colin Graves seeks six-month extension to ECB chairmanship

Colin Graves’ term as ECB chairman could be extended by six months, to allow him to oversee the first season of The Hundred.Graves, who has been in his post since 2015, was due to step down in May 2020 after a five-year stint. However, he has been instrumental in the development of The Hundred, and is understood to be keen to preside over the competition’s first season, which is due to be launched in July 2020.His move has been proposed by the ECB’s non-executive directors, including Lord Kamlesh Patel, Lucy Pearson and Jim Wood.It now needs to be approved by at least 31 of the 41 counties at the board AGM on May 7, after the ECB’s constitution was rewritten in 2018 to ensure it complied with Sport England’s code for sports governance.Should the motion pass, Graves would remain in office until November 2020, though the ECB has confirmed that a search for his successor would begin in September 2019.”2020 promises to be an exciting year for cricket in England and Wales,” Lord Patel said. “Given that Colin Graves has played a key role in overseeing the development of The Hundred, the Non-Executive Directors believe it is important to retain his services over the course of the 2020 domestic season.”This will also provide the opportunity for the Chair elect to be able to shadow Colin Graves for a six-month period, over the course of a season, which will help ensure there is a smooth succession.”

Aston Villa eye move for RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner to bolster striker ranks

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery is keen to put his recruitment plans in place for January and has identified an out-of-favour star who could help bolster a key area, according to a report.

Aston Villa's title charge…

At this stage, it would be fair to say that Aston Villa have emerged as Premier League title contenders under Emery, given that they sit just one point behind league-leaders Arsenal after taking 38 points from their first 17 matches played in the English top flight this term.

The Villans are unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions and will fancy themselves to extend their run into double figures when they take on Sheffield United at Villa Park on Friday evening, in a game that will afford Emery's men the chance to reach the summit of the table if they can record a victory.

He could be sent packing in the January transfer window…

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 19, 2023

Undoubtedly, it will be difficult for Emery's men to continue their recent form to a point where they eventually find themselves crowned champions amid competition from the might of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, among others

Nevertheless, optimism is at an all-time high in the Midlands and realistically, why can't Aston Villa go all the way if they continue to produce consistency when it matters? One inevitability of the Villans' lofty standing is that other clubs will come calling for their star men in the coming windows and Football Insider claim that Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz continues to attract interest from Arsenal.

Despite the Gunners' admiration for the 25-year-old, it is said that a January switch would prove nearly impossible to pull off for the Gunners as Aston Villa will hold out for a fee of around £100 million before entertaining offers for his signature. Potential incomings are a far more exciting prospect for loyal Villa supporters and Emery looks to have a striker in his sights once the window opens for business in 2024.

Timo Werner being watched by Aston Villa

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are keen on RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner as Emery looks to add another option in the final third to his squad. Jhon Duran is likely to leave Villa Park on a loan basis in January and the Villans are hoping to acquire a forward to deputise for Ollie Watkins over the second portion of the campaign.

Germany international Werner is on the fringes at his current employers and has previous Premier League experience following his spell at Chelsea between 2020 and 2022. Leicester City star Kelechi Iheanacho is also believed to be a target for Emery and is available on a free transfer in the summer of 2024.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner celebrates scoring a goal.

Previously dubbed "important" by former manager Thomas Tuchel, Werner has made 14 appearances in all competitions this term for RB Leipzig, registering two goals and one assist (Werner statistics – Transfermarkt).

Looking ahead, the 27-year-old could add some valuable experience and energy to Emery's frontline as Aston Villa dream of having a fairytale season in the West Midlands.

Phil Hay says Leeds could now look to bolster key position in January

Leeds United are in a blistering run of form under Daniel Farke and could now look to strengthen one key area in the January transfer window, according to journalist Phil Hay.

Leeds United prepare for Sunderland…

Leeds United secured a precious three points at Ewood Park against Blackburn Rovers as goals from Daniel James and Crysencio Summerville secured a 2-0 victory and kept the Whites on track in their hunt for Championship promotion. Now, the Yorkshire outfit sit third in the league standings with 41 points from 20 fixtures played; however, they still find themselves seven points adrift of Ipswich Town in second ahead of their showdown at Elland Road two days before Christmas.

In the aftermath of their triumph in Lancashire, Farke was delighted with his side's resilience after keeping a clean sheet, as he said via BBC Sport: "I'm especially pleased that we travel back with a clean sheet against a really good and dangerous side. We didn't allow them to have much."

He then added: "They had their spells in possession but in terms of big chances, there was not too much. It was important after a few weeks where we have conceded one goal, sometimes even two goals, today to return absolutely rock solid defence with a clean sheet. It's a really good performance and a massive win for us. I'm pretty delighted."

Of course, stiff tests are on the horizon for Leeds United as Farke's men plot a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, with a trip to Sunderland next on the agenda.

In light of this, journalist Hay has now taken to social media to provide an exciting update from the manager regarding an area where the Whites could potentially strengthen in the upcoming transfer window.

Leeds United could target a left-back

Taking to social media platform X, The Athletic journalist Hay has shared quotes from Farke's pre-match press conference ahead of their clash at the Stadium of Light that convey the message that Leeds are ready to target a left-back in January, as he stated the following below.

Of course, the German coach also intimated that Junior Firpo is now close to returning to the fold, in training at least, which will help to give the Whites' fans some added optimism that the Dominican Republic international can once again provide another option on the left-hand side of defence over the festive period.

Nevertheless, recruiting a left-back will be a top priority at Elland Road in January as they look to make sure they have sufficient squad depth to compete with their promotion rivals.

Coming through a clutch of difficult matches will be their first port of call; however, it is encouraging to hear that the notion of strengthening is already being spoken about directly ahead of the New Year.

Sunderland looking to sign a "monster" Seelt upgrade in January

Sunderland will be pleased with how their season is unfolding even just at this early stage, Tony Mowbray's Black Cats find themselves in the final playoff spot in the Championship currently with a 3-1 win against Birmingham City last time out a confident overall display.

Jobe Bellingham was the star of the show at the Stadium of Light in this one, the ex-Birmingham City teenager scoring the opening goal against his boyhood club to set up the dominant victory.

It was also a valiant defensive display from the Black Cats despite the near dominance too, 20-year-old centre-back Nectarios Triantis coming into the side for his debut and winning all three of his ground and aerial duels to solidify his side as per Sofascore.

Regardless of the defensive performance keeping Wayne Rooney's Blues at bay for the most part, Mowbray could well be in the market for a brand-new defender to offer the likes of Dan Ballard and Jenson Seelt competition in the form of Nathaniel Adjei.

Sunderland wouldn't be alone in their pursuit of the Ghanaian, however, with frenzied interest from a number of clubs in the EFL and beyond intensifying according to reports.

Sunderland transfers latest

A whole host of clubs are interested in Adjei's services, with Sunderland, Celtic, Rangers and Preston North End all considering the Hammarby centre-back as an option to bring in to help bolster their defences.

The Black Cats would only pursue a deal for the 21-year-old defender on a short-term loan deal, to add to the plethora of emerging talents at the back at the Stadium of Light currently – Triantis only 20 years of age, as is summer signing from PSV Eindhoven Jenson Seelt who has filled in at the back competently when asked to do so.

Mowbray might well want to add numbers defensively as well due to Dan Ballard's reoccurring injury problems, the former Arsenal youth product key to the Black Cats at the back this campaign but is prone to a knock when called up to the Northern Ireland international squad.

The 24-year-old is reportedly set to sit out his country's match versus Denmark tonight owing to a hamstring concern, the Black Cats potentially light on numbers at centre-back if Ballard is out for a considerable amount of time.

This proposed Adjei deal could well have legs therefore this January, with the 6 foot 1 centre back a consistent performer out in Sweden for Hammarby.

Adjei's style of play

The 21-year-old joining the building at Sunderland would add a "physical monster" into the Black Cats ranks, the Hammarby number 32 crucial to his side in intercepting the ball, closing down his markers and winning a fair majority of duels when he's on the pitch.

In a recent 0-0 stalemate away at IFK Värnamo in league action, Adjei won five of the seven ground duels that he threw himself into as per Sofascore and was key in Hammarby managing to steal a share of the points.

In contrast, Seelt for Sunderland has shied away from similar defensive duties with the Black Cats. This was apparent in the demoralising 4-0 defeat suffered by his team up against Middlesbrough back in October – Seelt unsuccessful in all two of his aerial duels in the contest as per Sofascore, bullied by the buoyed on Boro attackers.

Adjei is also far more alert to the danger than Seelt in the Allsvenskan, the lofty Hammarby presence more adept at clearing the ball away to alleviate pressure than the Dutchman.

The Ghanaian enforcer has cleared the ball away 2.7 times on average this season per game via Sofascore, whilst Seelt has averaged a lesser 1.3 in the second tier.

Mowbray might well look to Sweden this January to seal a deal for Adjei therefore, offering the Championship promotion hopefuls another body at the back to keep opposition attackers at arm's length and tally up more wins as a result.

Virat Kohli defends no-spinner attack, and Umesh Yadav over Bhuvneshwar Kumar

India’s captain said he might have played four quicks in the Perth Test even if R Ashwin had been fit

Sidharth Monga in Perth18-Dec-20184:09

‘We were totally convinced about this combination’ – Kohli

India might have gone into the Perth Test without a spinner even if R Ashwin had been fit, their captain Virat Kohli has said.Ashwin was ruled out of the game with a side strain, and India, rather than replacing him with Ravindra Jadeja, the other spinner in their 13-man squad for the Test, went ahead with a four-man pace attack. Australia stuck with their 3-1 combination and their spinner Nathan Lyon won the Man-of-the-Match award for his eight wickets. These events were somewhat similar to those of the Adelaide Test on the 2014-15 tour – Kohli’s first Test as captain – when India had played the rookie legspinner Karn Sharma, who leaked runs with little success, and Lyon had taken 12 wickets.India’s selection came in for sharp criticism, but Kohli defended it, saying the pitch had played exactly how the team management had expected it to.”Yes, we could have considered that (playing four quicks),” Kohli said, when asked if Ashwin would have played had he been fit. “If you see, the rough didn’t have much assistance. It was just the pace on the ball that Lyon bowled that he got the wickets that he got.”We as a team didn’t want to think that we definitely wanted to consider a spinning option on this pitch, especially having a look at the pitch on day one and how we thought it would play on the first three days, and exactly played out that way. We thought a fast bowler is going to be more productive and more helpful for us as a team.”The choice of the fourth fast bowler was also contentious, with Umesh Yadav getting a go ahead of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is usually considered an automatic pick on well-grassed pitches. Kohli said Bhuvneshwar lost out because he had not played much four-day cricket of late.”Bhuvi hasn’t played a lot of four-day cricket recently, and Umesh took 10 wickets in his last Test (against West Indies in Hyderabad), and was in good bowling rhythm. So that was the reason behind picking Umesh over Bhuvi.”Bhuvneshwar’s last first-class match was in Johannesburg, nearly 11 months ago. In England, he aggravated a lower-back injury during the ODI series, and was ruled out of the Test series in the same country, where conditions are considered to be ideal for him to bowl in. He was then rested for the home Tests against West Indies.Umesh Yadav gets to his run up•Associated PressOne of the reasons Bhuvneshwar was missed was his batting. Even in Johannesburg, on a pitch that just escaped being labelled dangerous, he scored 30 and 33 out of India’s totals of 187 and 247. India have often spoken of lower-order runs as one of the major contributing factors to their Test success, and this was the case just last week in Adelaide, where Ashwin scored 25 in a crucial 62-run stand for the seventh wicket. In Perth, India’s Nos. 8 to 11 only contributed 11 runs between them across both innings.”You obviously have two situations that you can think of,” Kohli said. “When you pick another fast bowler, obviously Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja have more ability with the bat, we all know that. It’s a very tricky decision to make, what kind of a bowling option you want to go with or you want to think that that guy can contribute with the bat as well.”So eventually you come to one decision, and we back that decision and went ahead with it. Whether it comes off or not, that’s a different thing, but we were totally convinced in the team that that was our best combination to go with, and the batsmen have to take responsibility. There are lots of variables that can happen during the course of a cricket match but before that, you need to have clarity as to what you want to do. And as a side, we were totally clear that this was the combination we wanted to go with.”The preferred option, Umesh, ended the match with figures of 2 for 139 from 37 overs and consolidated his reputation as a bowler much better suited to Indian conditions where he has reverse-swing to work with. Umesh’s economy rate of 3.75 had two knock-on effects: the part-time spinners bowled 29 overs, and the other three quicks had to keep coming back for spells when they may not have been at their freshest.Kohli was, however, happy with the fast bowlers’ performance overall.”Especially yesterday, the first session, giving away only 56-odd runs without getting a wicket,” Kohli said, when asked if he was satisfied with the control he had on the game, in the absence of a spinner. “I think it was outstanding bowling, and obviously [Mohammed] Shami did what he did in the next session with the ball (he took six wickets in the second innings), which was again wonderful to see. So, yeah. I think they executed their plans to 95% of what we expected.”I think you definitely can be happy with that. In the past when we have played four quicks, we definitely haven’t been as consistent as we were in this game. So, I think they were pretty accurate, pretty consistent, and as I said we were pretty convinced about going in with four fast bowlers looking at the conditions. I think they did pretty well.”

Returned from serious injury issuesHas impressed for club and countryConsidered to be an on-field leaderWHAT HAPPENED?

The 25-year-old midfielder has returned to action after spending the best part of 12 months nursing his way through serious hamstring problems. Adams has undergone two operations, but has caught the eye for club and country since recovering from injury – with the USMNT being helped to CONCACAF Nations League glory.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT IRAOLA SAID ABOUT ADAMS

Bournemouth are now looking for Adams to become a key cog in their Premier League machine, with Cherries boss Andoni Iraola telling the of a player that is still getting to grips with his system despite signing from Leeds in the summer of 2023: “He has to make mistakes. The others also have learned making mistakes and correcting from there. And he wants to go for all the balls. And sometimes you have to keep more discipline to keep the possession, keep to your side, keep your spaces, cover the things that you have to cover. But, he's very instinctive and he wants to cover a lot. He has to work on these things. But it's good that he can improve while he's having the minutes.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Adams is prepared to make his voice heard at Bournemouth, despite seeing limited game time so far, with the American star considered to be an on-field leader. Iraola added: “Tyler has been always like this. He's a captain with the national team. Even in the trainings, he’s going to be arguing, if he’s losing, he's not going to be happy. He will be demanding with the others. And this is a very good thing to have in the team.”

Adams played the full 90 minutes for Bournemouth as they secured a dramatic 2-1 over Everton in their last Premier League fixture, but it remains to be seen whether he can handle two games in the space of four days when the Cherries play host to Crystal Palace on Tuesday.

People will realise Cook's impact when he's not there – Farbrace

England will miss the calming influence Alastair Cook has in the dressing room environment, particularly on their upcoming tour to Sri Lanka, according to assistant coach Paul Farbrace who spoke as Cook ended the third day at The Oval unbeaten on 46.Cook had walked out to a rapturous standing ovation from a full house at The Oval for his final international innings and by the close was within touching distance of making twin fifties in the match – with the fairytale finish of a century still on offer.”He’s been pretty calm,” said Farbrace. “I would imagine that the reception he got tonight when he went out to bat I think it probably moved him. It moved everybody else in our dressing room how fantastic the support he’s had.””I think he just showed everything he’s about so far in this game. He’s all about waiting for the right ball in the right place but he’s just looked pretty organised and got stuck in. It’s not easy out there, it’s been quite tough, but he’s looks as though he’s really enjoying the scrap doesn’t he?”He just seems to cope with everything that’s in front of him and I think, as much as we are going to miss his runs and his catches, I think the calming influence that he has amongst the team, amongst the staff, amongst everybody, his calm way about going about things, doing things, dealing with what comes from media and television. You know he copes with that or seems to cope with that very well and I think that’s something well all miss that when he’s not in that dressing room.”Farbrace also gave an insight into Cook’s role in making newcomers feel welcome in the England camp and suggested that aspect of his character would be immediately missed on the first tour without him in the side.”When I came into the group in 2014 he was captain of the side and made it so easy to be a member of staff for the English cricket team,” said Farbrace. “It’s quite a daunting thing to come into having never played international cricket.””He’s a very caring bloke and he’s someone you can talk to about anything and everything and I think the young players who have come into the team this year have found him to be exactly that.”What he manages to do is make everybody feel very welcome, very part of things. Young players, old players, he seems to have the respect of everybody and everybody’s very comfortable talking to him. He’s got a very down to earth way of being, he’s got a very cheeky sense of humour and people find themselves being drawn to him and I think that’s something, come Sri Lanka, that a lot of people will be looking around realising he’s not there and I think then people will start to realise what an impact he’s had on them and us as a team.”

Gary Ballance ton a reminder Yorkshire's fate is in their own hands

Gary Ballance scored Yorkshire’s first Championship hundred since June to ease hopes of passing the follow-on target at Trent Bridge

Jon Culley at Trent Bridge05-Sep-20181:45

Drama at Taunton as Somerset and Lancashire tie

ScorecardSo much has gone wrong for Yorkshire this summer that to some of their followers, possibly even those in the committee room, could be excused for thinking that their luck is simply out, that relegation from Division One is somehow a preordained fate. The lifeline to which the players may cling is that it is in their hands.A well-worn cliché? Of course – but one that, in this instance, applies perfectly. Next to bottom on 94 points from 10 games going into this match, their last three fixtures are against Lancashire, Hampshire and Worcestershire, all of whom began this round feeling similarly fearful. Win any of those, they will have told themselves in the Yorkshire dressing room, and the points are almost worth double. The news from Taunton and Worcester will have done nothing to ease their anxieties. Points for a draw here could be precious, although they may take some securing. Nottinghamshire, themselves not properly out of the woods, made the most of their opportunity against a makeshift Yorkshire attack on an essentially flat pitch, setting a target of 299 just to avoid the follow-on, a total Yorkshire’s brittle batting line-up has achieved only five times all season. In their favour, Nottinghamshire are likewise without a full complement of bowlers. Jake Ball is out for the remainder of the season and Luke Fletcher, their most successful so far, has been on duty in the radio commentary booth rather than on the field – a sideline in which he shows a lot of promise, incidentally – although his absence is expected only to be temporary.Yorkshire made a dreadful start, nonetheless, when Adam Lyth edged the last ball of Mark Footitt’s opening over to gully, where Luke Wood held a fine catch. Footitt is playing his first match for Nottinghamshire on this ground for 11 years, so it will have felt almost like a debut wicket. At least better was to follow for the visiting team. Jeet Raval, the New Zealander who has taken over from his compatriot Kane Williamson as overseas player, had the misfortune to run into a particularly good ball from the left-arm of Harry Gurney, which took out his middle and off stumps, but Harry Brook played nicely for his 47 before Gary Ballance, whose patchy form this season has been in keeping with most of his team-mates, responded to the crisis with a timely century.Brook was out a little tamely, chipping straight to midwicket soon after Samit Patel had begun a 22-over unbroken stint at the pavilion end, but after their alliance had added 78 for the third wicket, Ballance found another solid and adaptable partner in Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who batted with valuable restraint to be unbeaten at the close.Ballance’s century is the first by any Yorkshire batsman since his own against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl in June, which is a telling statistic. Kohler-Cadmore could not get in the side at the beginning of the season but has an opportunity now, his half-century here following on from 81 against Somerset last week.Although there were a few deliveries early in his innings that unsettled him, Ballance eventually began to look comfortable. He scored 76 of his runs in boundaries, often worked off his legs but with a few punchy drives through the off side too.He fell soon after completing his hundred, when Patel – the man of the day for Nottinghamshire – spun one across him to have him caught bat and pad at short leg. Earlier, Patel and Matt Milnes, who made a career-best 43, batted freely in an eighth-wicket stand of 90 that secured maximum batting points for Nottinghamshire for the first time this season. There is not too much in this pitch now but the first overs of the third day may be pivotal, as they often are. If Yorkshire can score another 41 runs to achieve their first objective, they will have a chance to make their second.
