Man City now interested in signing 19 y/o who could be available for £66m

Manchester City are interested in signing an “exceptional” player who could be available for a transfer in the summer, according to a new report.

Man City suffer eighth defeat of Premier League season

The Blues continued their tricky run of fixtures with a home tie against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. Just a few days after being dispatched by Real Madrid in the Champions League, Liverpool came to the Etihad and looked comfortably in control despite often surrendering the ball to their hosts.

Manchester City should allow the forward to move on from the club in the summer.

That leaves City in fourth place and level with Newcastle United on 44 points after their eighth defeat in the league. But despite being beaten once again, Pep Guardiola said his side played “really good” and he had “no regrets”.

“It was a good game. Tight game in the first half; the first half it was more open, and the second half they defended very deep.

“They always have the threat, but it is not easy to control it. We dropped them. Through our pressing or build-up, dropped the team there. I think Doku and Savinho played an incredible game and get to the byline a lot, but then just from there, we missed the magic. We played really good so I have no regrets. The chances in the final third, when we want to shoot and cross, for the amount we arrived there, we did not create much.

Manchester City managerPepGuardiola and Erling Haaland

“I saw a bright future. Other than Kevin [de Bruyne] and Nathan [Ake], they are the future of this club in the next years, with others who will come in future windows. So many players are here playing, but we know Erling [Haaland] will come, and we have important absences. Everyone was really, really good.

“The first goal from the corner, but we tried to play, and I know how the opponent will play. Second half, they were 11 players in the box. We did well because they don’t want to do that. Big compliment to them, but I am very pleased with the way we play.”

Man City interested in signing 19 y/o Juventus star

As Guardiola mentioned after the Liverpool game, more players will come to the club in future transfer windows as they build for the future. According to Caught Offside, Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz could be a future arrival a Man City with Juve Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli aware of the need to balance their books amid interest from the blue half of Manchester.

The report states that while Yildiz is one of Juventus’ most valuable assets, they could consider selling him in the summer transfer window. The Italian giants know selling the 19-year-old would help generate funds and improve their financial situation, and that is why they are looking to get between €80-90 million (£66-74 million). This has alerted City, who are interested in signing the player but face competition from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United.

Yildiz has already expressed his interest in moving to the Premier League, and that could alert clubs even more. The young Turkey star can play anywhere across the frontline, and this season he has chipped in with four goals and two assists in Serie A. His performances have also impressed his national team manager, who has labelled Yildiz as “exceptional”.

'No more excuses!' – Ex-Chelsea star slams club's 'sliding' standards as Enzo Maresca looks to secure Champions League qualification

Chelsea face Manchester United on Friday evening and are acutely aware that they must win their final two games of the season if they are to guarantee qualification for the Champions League. They currently sit fifth, the final qualification spot this season, but are level on points with Aston Villa and are only one clear of Nottingham Forest in seventh.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea also have a Conference League final against Real Betis to prepare for, which comes just three days after their final game of the season against fellow Champions League hopefuls Forest. Nevertheless, Poyet insists standards have slipped at Stamford Bridge – a stadium that has witnessed the Blues lifting the Premier League trophy – and has told manager Enzo Maresca that he has no excuse if the club fail to finish in the top five.

  • WHAT GUS POYET SAID

Poyet told : “Chelsea must qualify for the Champions League next season. It was too early to call in the middle of the season, and then they had a great run of form. People even thought they could challenge for the title. After Enzo Maresca played down their chances, they went on a really bad run.

“Can they balance their focus between the Premier League and the Europa Conference League? There are no more excuses for Chelsea. The expectation used to be top two, then top three, then top four and now top five! Qualifying for the Champions League would stop the slide.”

Virat Kohli "completely blown away" by Suryakumar Yadav's innings

Virat Kohli was “completely blown away” by the innings Suryakumar Yadav played against Hong Kong on Wednesday, saying that he “changed the momentum of the game on a pitch that wasn’t as easy as he made it look.”Kohli and Suryakumar scored contrasting half-centuries during an unbroken partnership of 98 off 42 balls for the third wicket. And it was only after Suryakumar came in with seven overs to go that India were able to accelerate and post a total of 192 for 2 in Dubai.”SKY played an outstanding knock, a knock that I enjoyed thoroughly from the other end,” Kohli said during a conversation with Suryakumar for BCCI.tv. “I’ve seen so many innings when we play in the IPL [against each other], or that being done to other teams, but this was my first experience of watching very closely. I was completely blown away. I honestly believe that the way you played today, if you can stay in that zone, you can literally change the complexion of the game against any team in the world.”Related

India’s innings was a tale of two halves. In the first, KL Rahul scored only 36 off 39 balls, his slowest T20I innings in which he’s faced at least 30 deliveries, and while Kohli was not as rusty, he had to fight hard for his runs.Kohli was on 33 when Suryakumar joined him in the middle and swept his first two balls to the deep square-leg boundary. He hit four fours and a six in his first ten deliveries to set the tone for a masterclass in 360-degree batting.”When I was sitting inside, me and Rishabh [Pant] were speaking about how we could take game this ahead as the wicket was a little slow,” Suryakumar said. “When I went into bat, I tried to just be myself and do what I love doing. It was a really simple plan: taking the first 10 balls, I wanted to hit three-four boundaries and when I got that, I just kept batting.”Suryakumar played scoops, sweeps, flicks and hit two stunning sixes over point to bring up his half-century off just 22 balls – his fastest in T20 internationals. He struck four sixes in the final over to finish unbeaten on 68 off 26 balls, while Kohli remained not out on 59 off 44. India scored 78 off the last five overs.”At that moment, I knew I needed you there,” Suryakumar said to Kohli. “That’s why I told you that you just bat from one end, it’ll be easy to cover up because I’ve seen you a lot of times, when you take 30-35 balls, the next 10 balls you bat with a strike rate of 200-250. It was important for me that you stay there so that I bat freely until the 20th over. And the same thing happened. I really enjoyed it.”After coming back from a 42-day break, Kohli reiterated how “mentally fresh” he was feeling at the moment. He had returned with an innings of 35 off 34 balls against Pakistan, and though his half-century against Hong Kong wasn’t the most fluent innings, Kohli was able to accelerate at the end.”My plan was simple, like in the last game,” Kohli said. “I’ve come off a decent break, month and a half. Six weeks is a long time, especially at the international level when you get out of touch with the game, but I came mentally fresh. So I really enjoyed myself in the last game as well, against a quality attack. I kind of got the pace of the wicket, but I knew my job was to stabilise the innings and build a partnership with whoever I play with. And in between when the situation allows me to, take a risk and find a boundary every now and then.”But again, when you [Suryakumar] came in, I told you I’m going to keep going but the moment you started and gave me a clear indication of how you’re feeling, my role immediately changed to holding one end. As you said, you could go out and express yourself almost every ball. That is something I enjoy doing, so that even if god forbid you didn’t get those runs, then I could take charge, or we have Rishabh [Pant] or in another game Hardik [Pandya], Dinesh [Karthik] or [Ravindra Jadeja] Jaddu.”It was just applying whatever knowledge I have accumulated over the years for the benefit of the team. It was nice to get a couple of games where I felt good with my batting. For me, milestones and number of runs are irrelevant, it’s how you feel when you bat, and I felt very good.”With wins in both their matches, India are the first team from Group A to qualify for the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup.

Charlie Dean to captain London Spirit in place of injured Heather Knight

Young England off-spinner leads side boasting plenty of international experience

Valkerie Baynes10-Aug-2022Charlie Dean will replace injured England captain Heather Knight as skipper of London Spirit for the Women’s Hundred.Dean, the 21-year-old off-spinner, takes over from the vastly experienced Knight, who missed England’s entire Commonwealth Games campaign – they lost the bronze-medal play-off to New Zealand – with a hip injury that has left her needing to use crutches and is expected to keep her on the sidelines for a period of months.”It’s a great opportunity for me, I’m really looking forward to leading this team,” Dean said. “Obviously, we are gutted that Heather can’t join us this year, but we have an exciting squad filled with experience and young talent and we can’t wait to get started on Friday.”Related

A relative newcomer to the England set-up, Dean earned her only T20I cap for England during the washed-out second match in that leg of the Ashes series in January. She didn’t take the field as play was abandoned in the fifth over with England 25 without loss. Dean was not part of England’s squad for the Commonwealth Games, which was played as a T20 competition. She has played 16 ODIs, making her debut against New Zealand last September, most recently in the series with South Africa, which she finished as leading wicket-taker.Dean was key to Southern Vipers’ Charlotte Edwards Cup triumph in June, taking two wickets and sharing a match-winning partnership with Ella McCaughan to help defeat Central Sparks by six wickets in the final. She was also the competition’s second-highest wicket-taker.In 2021, she took six wickets for London Spirit, who finished their inaugural campaign in fourth place on the eight-team table, at an average of 28.00 and an economy rate of 7.09. During that time, she impressed Knight and made her international debut a short time later.Dean will lead an impressive international contingent at London Spirit, including two Australian Commonwealth Games gold medallists in Beth Mooney – the Games’ leading run-scorer – and fast bowler Megan Schutt, as well as talented New Zealand allrounder Amelia Kerr.London Spirit open their 2022 season against Southern Brave, last year’s runners up, in Southampton on Friday.

Harrison upgrade: Everton eye £25m ace who made Van Dijk’s life "very hard"

Sometimes, action needs to be taken in the Premier League. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has – rightly – been hit with plenty of criticism this season, having gone 16 matches without a single goal contribution for a struggling Everton side.

While the non-committal striker has been dismal for large portions of the campaign, he’s hardly been helped by his playmakers, with Everton actually the least creative team in the division this season.

David Moyes has a towering task on his hands, but it’s not insurmountable. New owners, The Friedkin Group, simply need to invest this month, with a new winger being targetted alongside a centre-forward.

Everton eyeing Harrison upgrade

Turkish newspaper Hurriyet – translated by Sport Witness – have confirmed that Everton are in the running for Galatasaray star Baris Alper Yilmaz, albeit with a host of Premier League rivals sniffing around too.

Aston Villa, Newcastle United and West Ham United are all prepared to tussle for the prized winger, who Gala have priced at €30m (£25m) after laughing off initial bids totalling €20m (£17m).

However, the 24-year-old principally plays off the right flank and could be enticed by Everton’s need for a star member in that position. Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom, plainly, aren’t cutting the mustard.

Why Everton want Baris Alper Yilmaz

A little-known player across Europe before Euro 2024 in Germany, Yilmaz made quite the impression with Turkey last summer, earning praise from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk after he made it “very hard” for him to defend against, the Netherlands star acknowledging his tricks and fleet-footedness.

Turkey were knocked out of the prestigious competition in the quarter-finals, losing 2-1 to the Dutch after an enthralling contest, but Yilmaz stood out across their five matches, averaging 5.8 successful duels and 1.6 dribbles per game, as per Sofascore, while also placing one key pass each match.

He’s since been in fine fettle in the Turkish Super Lig, instrumental as first-placed Galatasaray mount a title charge under Okan Buruk.

Baris Yilmaz

Ten goals from 18 appearances certainly constitutes a reputation as a goalscoring winger, especially as he’s created four big chances and averaged 1.6 dribbles per game too.

Without question, he’d be an upgrade on Harrison for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign, with the on-loan Everton star enduring a torrid season in the Premier League, yet to score or assist over 18 outings, equating to 1,001 minutes in total.

The 28-year-old has also only managed to create three big chances while averaging 0.6 dribbles per game, with a measly success rate of 32%.

The Athletic have confirmed this month that Everton are seeking new forms of firepower on the flanks, and Yilmaz would be the electric option capable of steering the club away from the drop zone.

It would be unwise to cut Harrison’s loan spell short and send him back to Leeds United, but in Yilmaz, an exciting option could arrive and trump him to the starting spot.

Forget about Saliba: 8/10 Arsenal star was a "different beast" vs Man Utd

Well, that wasn’t exactly a classic, but Arsenal made it four wins on the bounce last night and four wins in a row against Manchester United to boot.

Mikel Arteta’s side were far from their scintillating best in attack and actually looked quite blunt in the first half, but two set-piece goals in the second 45 secured all three points and kept them in the Premier League title race.

Moreover, while some of the forward players left much to be desired on the night, there were still several brilliant displays elsewhere, notably from William Saliba.

Saliba's performance vs Man Utd

Despite being without centre-back partner Gabriel Magalhaes due to injury, Saliba put in yet another monster performance, proving that he’s one of the very best defenders in the world, let alone England.

The French international was everywhere in defence, putting his body in the way and making it impossible for Rasmus Hojlund to hold up play, and then, to top it all off, he also scored the team’s second goal to all but guarantee that the three points would be staying in North London.

Unsurprisingly, the watching press were just as impressed by the former Saint-Étienne ace as we were, with the Standard’s Simon Collings awarding him an 8/10 match rating at full-time and writing that he was ‘so composed on the ball’ and utterly ‘dominant’ throughout.

While undoubtedly high praise, Collings’ appraisal is more than backed up by the stats.

In his 94 minutes on the pitch, the Bondy-born titan scored a goal, made two clearances, two interceptions and one tackle, won two of three ground duels, took 78 touches, completed 67 of 71 passes, was accurate in 100% of his long balls and took one shot on target.

Overall, it was a practically perfect display from Saliba, yet one of his teammates was arguably just as good.

The Arsenal star who was as good as Saliba vs Man Utd

So, there are a number of players who could potentially fit the bill, from centre-back partner Jakub Kiwior to right-back Jurrien Timber, but in reality, it’s the club’s £105m man, Declan Rice.

Yes, the former West Ham United captain has finally started to look back to his incredible best in recent games, and while he was a tad slow in the first half, he was sublime in the second, or as journalist Sam Dean said, a “different beast.”

It was the Englishman’s corner that was so perfectly placed for Timber to open the scoring, and then after that, it felt like he was here, there and everywhere.

One moment, he was snuffing out any counter-attacks threatening to develop, and the next, he was playing brilliant, accurate passes to help the Gunners maintain their stranglehold on the game.

The 25-year-old left Collings suitably impressed, as the journalist also awarded him an 8/10 match rating on the night, writing that he ‘gave Arsenal the injection of energy they needed.’

Like his French teammate, the 6 foot 2 wall’s statistics from the night back up all the praise.

In 94 minutes, he produced an expected assists figure of 0.41, provided an assist, took 56 touches, played three key passes, completed 100% of his long balls, created one big chance, blocked two shots, won five of six duels, and made one clearance, one interception and one tackle.

Ultimately, while Timber and Saliba will understandably grab the headlines for their goalscoring exploits, Rice should receive just as much praise as he was simply sensational for Arsenal.

Ben Stokes offers Joe Root 'love, respect and support' in wake of Test resignation

Ben Stokes, England’s vice-captain and the man widely tipped to take over from the outgoing Joe Root this summer, says that he offered his team-mate “nothing but love, respect and support” during an emotional phone-call last week, in which Root confirmed his intention to stand down after a record 64 Tests in charge.Writing in his Daily Mirror column, Stokes expressed his admiration for Root’s cricketing ability, but also his deep gratitude for his support as a friend – most recently during Stokes’ break from the game in the 2021 home summer, but also in the wake of the Bristol night-club incident in September 2017, after which he had feared for his professional future.”Our relationship goes deeper and further than just team-mates,” Stokes said. “We are good friends and have been for a long time. We’ve had some great moments on and off the field during this time and we’ve also had some pretty difficult ones too and it is that mutual support that has helped make it so special.Related

“When I took my break from the game in 2021, Joe was brilliant,” Stokes added. “He said: ‘I just want my friend to be alright.’ The cricket came second, his concern was for my well-being full stop.”And going back a few years now to the Bristol incident, that was where my captain really went to bat for me. That is where my total loyalty towards Joe comes from, and he will always have it because he has never been anything but a good man towards me and the rest of his players.”Root had concluded England’s recent Test tour of the Caribbean with a declaration of his intention to carry on as captain. But, having subsequently taken a month’s holiday to reflect on an arduous year, in which England have won one Test out of 17, he last week came to the conclusion that it was time for a change.Stokes admitted he “didn’t know what to expect” when Root’s name flashed up on his phone, but added that he knew what was coming as soon as Root started talking.”As you can imagine it was quite an emotional conversation, but it wasn’t a long chat, there will be time for that in the future,” Stokes said. “This was an emotional few minutes and in return there was nothing but love, respect and support from me because that is what Joe Root has shown me throughout his time as England Test captain.”Now that he has stood down, I fully expect him to continue his brilliance with a bat in hand and show why he is the greatest batsman we’ve ever produced,” Stokes added. “We are lucky to have him and he’s still got so much to offer English cricket.”Ben Stokes is back in the nets after a knee injury•Getty Images

Although Stokes has not actively courted the role, he acknowledged that his name was sure to be “strongly talked about” as England’s new managing director, Rob Key, begins the process of appointing a new captain before the three-Test series against New Zealand in June.”I’m sure we’ll talk soon enough, as he will with other players and support staff,” Stokes said of his impending discussions with Key. “It is an exciting time for us all, at the start of a new era for the Test team.”Stokes has already received the endorsement of England’s white-ball captain, Eoin Morgan, who believes he would lead by example if offered the opportunity.”Obviously Ben is a fantastic player, a brilliant leader, though he doesn’t need to have the captain’s armband on to lead like he does,” Morgan told Sky Sports.”The experience of the World Cup final here [at Lord’s] really showed his true colours in the way that he led from start to finish – and throughout the whole tournament as well. He’d certainly be a candidate.”I think it would be hard to turn down the captaincy. It’s a privileged position to be in. Obviously circumstances have to be right, but most people who want to take red-ball cricket forward would like to take it on.”Morgan himself has been mentioned in passing for the Test captaincy, but having not played any first-class cricket since 2019, he has dismissed the notion out of hand.”I haven’t played red-ball cricket for a long time,” he said. “I wouldn’t have any interest in the job. I would be no good at it.”
