Thirimanne fifty blunts West Indies after Brathwaite ton

Suranga Lakmal took 4/94 but the captain’s century and the allrounder’s 73 kept the home team strong

Andrew Fidel Fernando30-Mar-2021Stumps Kraigg Brathwaite completed a ninth Test century in the first over of the day, before Rahkeem Cornwall and later Lahiru Thirimanne completed half-centuries during a meandering day of Test cricket that ended with neither team ascendant, again.West Indies’ eventual 354 was more than Sri Lanka would have liked to concede. But, at stumps, Sri Lanka had reached a reasonable 134 for 3. On a pitch that offered little assistance to the bowlers, they were still in the hunt to haul in the opposition’s lead. This was, however, a slow day of Test cricket. Only six wickets fell, and despite that, only 203 runs were scored across 86 overs – a scoring rate of 2.36. Only Cornwall batted with adventure, in the first hour of the day, with both West Indies’ and Sri Lanka’s remaining batsmen choosing to dig in on a slow track. The visitors had Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva not out at the close. Chandimal was 34 off 80; de Silva 23 off 95. Slow. There had been some excitement in the earliest overs of the day, however, as Brathwaite moved from his overnight 99 into triple figures with a single to fine leg. Cornwall then completed a half-century, edging a ball behind point for four in the third over of the day.It was in the first hour of play that West Indies made the most ground, and it was Cornwall who did most of the damage: flicking, punching, driving and sometimes edging fortuitously as Sri Lanka grew visibly frustrated that the eighth wicket had taken them so long to get. The pair batted through the first hour and wound up producing a century stand, the first of the innings. Their partnership was worth 103 when Cornwall holed out to mid-on to give Suranga Lakmal his fourth wicket, ending with 73 off 92 balls.Lahiru Thirimanne scored his third successive half-century•RANDY BROOKS/AFP/Getty ImagesKemar Roach attempted to hang in and managed to stick around for 36 balls while Brathwaite continued to hold his end tight, progressing only gradually. Dushmantha Chameera put an end to the innings though, having Roach caught behind and getting Brathwaite to play on for 126 in successive overs. Still, West Indies had frustrated the visitors for an entire session, and grown their total by 67 runs.Sri Lanka’s response was sedate from the outset. Although Thirimanne began confidently, driving his second ball through mid-off for four, he quickly settled into a measured rhythm. That first boundary did set up something of a trend as Thirimanne collected four of his eventual six boundaries down the ground. But it was the less ambitious strokes that defined the innings – the blocks, the leaves and the singles square of the wicket. Not long after tea, he reached 50 with a run to point. It was his third consecutive half-century.Around him, though, the top order faltered. Dimuth Karunaratne fell cheaply again. He took a single off the first delivery he faced, remained scoreless for the next 15 balls, then fell attempting an expansive drive off the bowling of Alzarri Joseph. Karunaratne’s thick edge might have passed between the cordon and gully, but Nkrumah Bonner provided the best piece of catching in the series when he leapt hard to his right and clinched the ball one-handed as it threatened to zip rapidly by him.Oshada Fernando produced an uncharacteristically pained innings, making 18 off 71 as he survived several close lbw shouts before eventually succumbing to a Kyle Mayers delivery that jagged in off the seam. Not long after, Thirimanne fell inside-edging a Roach ball that hit his pad, then ricocheted on to the stumps.Chandimal and de Silva were meticulous in their defence as they took Sri Lanka through to the close. West Indies thought they had de Silva caught behind in the last over, but his bat had flashed right past the leg-side delivery from Cornwall bowling a negative line around the stumps, and the hosts lost a review. De Silva padded away the next delivery to end the day’s play.

Leeds have struck gold with Radz signing who’s worth more than Bogle

Leeds United have dipped into the transfer market to make four additions to their playing squad during the current summer transfer window so far.

Daniel Farke has added Joe Rodon on a permanent deal, after his loan spell at Elland Road, Alex Cairns, and Joe Rothwell, on loan from Bournemouth, to his squad.

The German head coach has also recently acquired Jayden Bogle from Sheffield United, officially welcoming him to the club on Saturday afternoon.

Jaden Bogle for Sheffield United.

Their Championship rivals were said to be demanding a fee of £7m for the full-back, with it reported since the move was completed that they have paid a "significant, undisclosed fee".

Whilst Leeds welcome Bogle from across Yorkshire, the club have struck gold with one star who could return to the squad like a new signing for Farke at the start of next season – Pascal Struijk.

How much Leeds paid for Pascal Struijk

The Dutch defender signed for Leeds in January 2018 under the reign of Andrea Radrizzani on a free transfer from Ajax and initially joined as an academy player, rather than a first-team addition.

He only made five league appearances in his first 18 months at the club under Marcelo Bielsa, with all five of those outings coming during the 2019/20 title-winning campaign in the Championship.

Leeds defender Pascal Struijk.

His first market valuation on Transfermarkt came in October 2020, shortly after that season, as they valued him at just €750k (£629k) at the time.

The central defender then went on to play 27 or more games in each of the team's three years in the Premier League, as he established himself as a regular in the first-team.

Leeds struck gold with Struijk

At the time of writing, Transfermarkt values the 24-year-old enforcer at a whopping €15m (£12.6m) and that is significantly more than his first valuation of €750k four years ago and more than the £7m Sheffield United wanted for Bogle – who is one year younger than him.

This shows that Leeds struck gold when they signed Struijk on a free transfer as his value has skyrocketed over the years and he has emerged as a key first-team player for the club, which highlights his value on the pitch and financially as an asset.

Unfortunately, the Dutch ace missed the last 29 games of last season with a groin injury and that forced Ethan Ampadu to fill in at centre-back.

As you can see in the table above, Struijk caught the eye during the first half of the season when fit as the defender won the majority of his duels on the deck and in the air, whilst being very reliable in possession.

The left-footed star, who was described as a "cornerstone" of the club's future by Farke, could return from injury like a fresh signing for Leeds next term, as they have been without his talents since New Year's Day.

It now remains to be seen whether or not the Whites will stump up the £7m required to sign Bogle but Struijk could walk back into the team like a £12.6m-rated new signing ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Keane was spotted angrily confronting a supporter after abuse was allegedly hurled in the pundit's direction at Portman Road on Sunday. Keane can also be heard saying "I'll wait for you in the car park" in a video circulating on social media as tensions rose after the 1-1 draw. An Ipswich fan, Neil Finbow, has now claimed to be the target of Keane's fury and has taken to social media to reveal exactly what happened between the pair.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Keane was known for his hot temper and aggression during his trophy-laden playing career with Manchester United before moving into management. The former midfielder spent 18 months in charge of Ipswich but was sacked in 2011 with the team down in 21st place in the Championship, something that certainly has not been forgotten at Portman Road, it seems.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Finbow posted on Facebook: "New claim to fame just been offered out into the carpark by Roy Keane after a few choice words even Jamie Redknapp had to come over to get him away just ya average Sunday evening out." Finbow also offered some insight into what he said to Keane: "Yep did remind him he set us back five years and ruined our football club – I also mentioned he wasn't fit to step foot anywhere near our ground. Oh and I mentioned about him walking out on a World Cup and breaking [Alf-Inge] Halaand's leg and putting it in his autobiography I hate the bloke and that's been boiling up since he got sacked all those years ago."

As bad as Antonio: Lopetegui must axe 4/10 West Ham ace after Villa

West Ham United lost their opening fixture of the 2024/25 Premier League season, with Julen Lopetegui leaving several new signings on the bench and falling to Aston Villa in the capital.

It had to be him. Jhon Duran scored off the bench for the travellers to hammer the hosts down a peg, with Lucas Paqueta's penalty previously restoring parity before the break following debutant Amadou Onana's early header.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

Lopetegui has much to chew on after his first competitive assessment and now must consider integrating more of the new arrivals to the starting line-up, with Michail Antonio among those likely to lose their place.

Michail Antonio fails to inspire

Antonio is a veteran and a stalwart. No West Ham player, past and present, has scored more for the Irons in the Premier League, but aged 34, his defects were clear against slick and stylish Villa.

Isolated up top, Antonio failed to hit the target and failed to win a duel, with his focal role at the front of the formation failing, simply, to inspire.

Given that the powerful Niclas Fullkrug has arrived from Borussia Dortmund for £27m and last term's Championship MVP, Crysencio Summerville, is also added to the frontline, Antonio might find himself rueing to grasp the occasion and prove to his new boss that he is the man for the job at No. 9.

West Ham players after Aston Villa defeat

Antonio's physicality and all-round confidence mean that he will play an important role throughout the campaign, even if he starts intermittently.

The same can't be said for Vladimir Coufal, however, who must be sweating for his place after a display against the Villans that left plenty to be desired.

Why West Ham must axe Vladimir Coufal

Disgruntlement hung across the London Stadium after some exciting defensive additions were kept on the bench for West Ham's 2024/25 curtain-raiser.

Coufal, who has collected a growing pile of detractors since the start of the year, did little to convince Lopetegui of his place in the starting line-up against Aston Villa, namely undone by poor positioning that opened up inroads for the visitors.

West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui

The Evening Standard's Dom Smith echoed this sentiment, branding the £35k-per-week defender with a 4/10 match rating and writing: 'Caught out of position by coming too centrally, allowing Lucas Digne and John McGinn to exploit the space down the left. And Duran got through late on, too, thanks to Coufal’s poor positioning.'

As per Sofascore, the experienced Czech lost eight of his nine contested duels and failed to complete a tackle while also committing four fouls.

West Ham's pre-season bore an undercurrent of defensive fragility but Lopetegui has been backed by the club, with technical director Tim Steidten signing Max Kilman at the start of the window and recently closing deals for dynamic centre-half Jean-Clair Todibo and former Manchester United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Wan-Bissaka, who started from the bench on Saturday evening, will hope to nail down a regular starting spot at right-back, displacing Coufal after years of the 31-year-old's solid service.

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal.

He was linked with a move away from east London before the summer transfer window opened for business, and despite losing Ben Johnson, the Hammers might be tempted to identify an understudy for their shiny new signing and axe Coufal from the squad.

Mounting a convincing challenge for European qualification is paramount for West Ham. Though there is plenty of work to do after an opening-day defeat against Aston Villa, Lopetegui has the tools to fashion success – he might need one or two more tweaks.

Liverpool now weighing up move to sign £21m Martin Zubimendi alternative

Whilst their pursuit of Martin Zubimendi continues to steal the headlines, Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a move to sign an alternative option worth just £21m this summer.

Liverpool transfer news

After a quiet two months, Liverpool's transfer window came to life with links to Zubimendi this week. Reports indicated that the Reds were exploring a deal for the Real Sociedad midfielder, before that exploration turned into confidence in pursuit of his signature. Now, Liverpool must continue their negotiations which could end with them triggering his reported €60m (£51m) release clause.

If those at Anfield do fail in their pursuit of the Euro 2024 winner, meanwhile, with Sociedad reportedly looking to convince their star to stay put, it looks unlikely to stop their search for a new defensive midfielder. Reports suggest that an alternative option has even already been scouted.

According to GiveMeSport, Liverpool are weighing up a move to sign Morten Frendrup this summer after scouting the Genoa midfielder and keeping him on their shortlist since the winter window in January. Compared to Zubimendi's £52m price-tag, the Genoa man is significantly cheaper too, with the Serie A club reportedly valuing him at just £21m.

He's like Suarez: Liverpool could land bargain £150k-p/w Gordon upgrade

The Reds could turn their attention elsewhere this summer.

1 ByRobbie Walls Aug 8, 2024

Just 23 years old, the Dane wouldn't steal the same spotlight as Zubimendi, but for such a low price-tag in comparison, the Reds would still be getting a player who could solve Arne Slot's problem at the base of his midfield.

That said, at this stage, Zubimendi seems to be Liverpool's priority and Frendrup may be left waiting in the wings as an alternative option.

"Destroyer" Frendrup would be an upgrade on Endo

Despite an impressive debut season last time out, Wataru Endo was always unlikely to be the long-term solution to Liverpool's midfield problems, especially since he's already 31 years old. Instead, if it's not Zubimendi, that responsibility could fall the way of Frendrup before the end of the summer transfer window.

Interestingly, Frendrup is a different type of midfielder than Zubimendi. Where the Spaniard is better on the ball and progresses play through his passing ability, the Dane is similar to Endo in that his better work comes off the ball, winning an impressive 72 tackles last season.

Morten Frendrup in action

Described as a "high-quality midfield destroyer" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, signing Frendrup may see Liverpool choose to maintain their current midfield setup if they miss out on Zubimendi. That's arguably why it's crucial that Arne Slot does get the chance to work with the Sociedad man if he wants to implement his system to its best, which aims to pass teams into submission.

Bayern remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga after beating the struggling visitors in a game that became more difficult than it perhaps needed to be.

The first half couldn't have been more comfortable for the hosts. They had 86% possession and 12 shots on target, and made their dominance count when Dayot Upamecano headed home a Joshua Kimmich corner in the 18th minute.

But the centre-back went from hero to zero early in the second half as Heidenheim stunned the home crowd by making it 1-1. Mathias Honsak latched onto a woeful backpass from Upamecano to take the ball past Daniel Peretz and score.

The sides were level for just six minutes, though. Musiala, brought on for Thomas Muller, scored four minutes after his introduction with a low drive that beat Kevin Muller at his near post.

Michael Olise squandered a chance to add a third when he couldn't finish from Kimmich's fine pass, but Leon Goretzka made no mistake when his first-time volley found a way past Muller via a deflection.

A late flurry of goals saw Heidenheim's Niklas Dorsch make it 3-2 before Musiala put a bow on proceedings with his second goal of the game.

    THE MVP

On this evidence, Bayern should do whatever it takes to convince Kimmich to sign a contract extension. The 29-year-old dictated proceedings from the middle of the park, completing 127 passes at a completion rate of 93%. He almost added a second assist with a brilliant pass through the defense, but Olise fluffed his lines.

  • THE BIG LOSER

Sorry, Harry Kane. The injured striker will wonder how many goals he would have managed against a Heidenheim side that allowed 21 shots. Another hat-trick surely would have been in his sights.

Forget Alvarez: Man City want £70m ace who’s "chasing Haaland’s records"

It is fair to say that the 2024 summer transfer window has been quiet for Manchester City so far. They have made just two signings, bringing exciting winger Savinho to the club for £30.8m, and more recently, re-signing treble-winning captain Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona after just one year away from the club.

With just over 24 hours left before the transfer window slams firmly shut, the Cityzens could well make a late move. They have been linked with a player who could bolster their attacking options after Julian Alvarez’s sale to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid for £81m last month, with the Argentine departing after registering 54 goals and assists in 103 games during a glittering spell at the Etihad.

Man City target Premier League striker

The player in question here is Brighton and Hove Albion and Ireland international striker Evan Ferguson. As reported earlier this week, Pep Guardiola’s side are eyeing up a move for the 19-year-old striker before tomorrow’s transfer deadline, who could cost around £70m.

Brighton strikerEvan Ferguson.

However, the Cityzens are not the only side interested in signing the teenager. Arsenal are also targeting the Brighton number 28 this summer. The Premier League’s first and second-place clubs from the past two seasons are thought to be ready to make a potential bid for the Irishman.

Why Ferguson would be a good signing

The 2022/23 campaign was a breakthrough campaign for Ferguson. The youngster played 19 games in the Premier League, scoring six goals and registering two assists, as well as scoring three times in four FA Cup appearances.

Last term was slightly more frustrating for the Irishman, given the fact he missed the final nine top-flight games with an ankle injury, that also kept him out of the first two games in the new season, wins against Everton and Manchester United. He played 27 Premier League games last term, getting on the scoresheet six times.

In his first campaign for the Seagulls, the 19-year-old was statistically one of the best strikers in the Premier League, too, as per FBref. He averaged 0.54 goals per game and had a non-penalty expected goals tally of 0.5xG per 90 minutes. That places him in the top 16% and 14% for each respective metric.

He was described as “incredibly prolific” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, and the stats show exactly why. Learning from and playing with Erling Haaland will only further improve his game.

It has certainly been a record-breaking start to the young striker’s career so far. In November 2023, he became the first teenager to score ten or more goals in the Premier League in a single calendar year since Wayne Rooney in 2005, as per Statman Dave.

Indeed, it is stats like those that led former Chelsea and Scotland winger Pat Nevin to claim that the youngster will one day "be chasing Haaland’s records", which would be no mean feat.

Amongst several other incredible achievements from the Norwegian, he has already scored 94 goals and 14 assists in 101 appearances for the Cityzens.

City may well be able to forget Alvarez soon if they manage to sign the exciting young striker. There is no doubting his quality, and he has already sent so many records tumbling and scored an impressive number of goals.

Learning from Haaland could be ideal for Ferguson to hone his game and help him become one of the deadliest marksmen in the Premier League.

Queensland and New South Wales: route to the Sheffield Shield final

The Sheffield Shield was shortened by two rounds due to Covid-19, but it still took considerable effort to reach the final

Andrew McGlashan13-Apr-2021Queensland
Beat Tasmania by an innings and 59 runs
The margin of victory was convincing, but it was not until deep into the final hour that Mitchell Swepson, who sent down 45.2 overs in the second innings, clinched the match-winning wicket after Tasmania’s lower order had threatened to hold on. Michael Neser had set the game up on the opening day with 5 for 32, which he then followed with a maiden first-class century that built on Marnus Labuschagne’s 167 to ensure a huge lead.Lost to New South Wales by one wicket
The game of the season came down to the final pair with Harry Conway surviving four balls with the scores level after Nathan Lyon had been run out. Sean Abbott held his nerve to just clear the in-field with the winning stroke. It was a high-quality nip-and-tuck encounter throughout. Labuschagne scored an opening-day hundred before vital half-centuries from Abbott and Peter Nevill meant it was almost level on first innings. Trent Copeland then produced one of the spells of summer to claim 5 for 17 off 18 overs – at one point he had 5 for 7 from 15 overs – to set up a target of 206. At 3 for 124 things looked in hand, but Swepson took his match haul to 10 for 171 and almost pulled it off for Queensland.Beat South Australia by 62 runs
Swepson was again the hero for Queensland as he clinched victory with three late wickets and 20 minutes to spare – during a marathon second-innings stint of 52 overs – after they looked like being denied in a game they dominated from start to finish. However, it was Mark Steketee who burst the game open on the final afternoon when he broke a fifth-wicket stand of 218 between Callum Ferguson and Harry Nielsen. The match had been set up by centuries from Usman Khawaja, Matt Renshaw and Jimmy Peirson before Swepson’s five-wicket haul help skittle the Redbacks for 154.Joe Burns made an outstanding century against Tasmania•Getty Images

Beat Tasmania by three wickets
Khawaja’s classy unbeaten 115 secured an impressive run chase in a match where Queensland – missing the injured Swepson – had been behind the running almost throughout. Caleb Jewell’s century gave Tasmania a handy total then Queensland collapsed from 1 for 124 to 7 for 161 before Joe Burns constructed a magnificent 171 – which was 62% of the total – to keep them within touching distance. Stekette and Xavier Bartlett struck often enough to keep the lead manageable then a stand of 137 between Labuschagne and Khawaja broke the back of the chase.Draw against Western Australia
A road of a pitch was the winner at the Gabba in a game mostly remembered for Cameron Green’s 251. There rarely looked like being a result once it was clear there wouldn’t be a chase created as Queensland batted on to 9 for 600 with hundreds from Renshaw and Bryce, while Labuschagne fell eight short of another. With a lead of 142 there was a glimmer of panic from Western Australia when they were then 4 for 67, but Hilton Cartwright and Jake Carder saw out time.Draw against Victoria
Only 76 overs were possible across the first two days at Allan Border Field where Marcus Harris’ century held Victoria together in tricky conditionsMatch abandoned against South Australia
Although the rain cleared after the first day and the new Ian Healy Oval had good drainage, the outfield could not recover from the deluge as the players were left kicking their heels.Draw against New South Wales
Either team could still have missed the final with a defeat here if Western Australia had beaten Tasmania but that scenario did not eventuate and Queensland were able to keep top spot. A reshaped New South Wales batting order responded strongly from the 32 all out against Tasmania led by Jason Sangha’s 103, but Labuschagne followed with a hundred of his own in a solid reply while Lyon toil through 48 overs for six wickets. The most significant aspect of the match became the early return of Swepson who produced a ripping leg-break in the second innings to remove Daniel Hughes.Sean Abbott’s runs have been vital throughout the season•Getty Images

New South Wales
Draw against Western Australia
A flat pitch at Park 25 was good for a few batting averages but not the chance of a result. New South Wales were unsteady at 3 for 71 but Moises Henriques and Dan Solway added 244 before Nevill and Abbott put on an unbroken 118. Green’s 197 was the dominant figure in Western Australia’s reply and when there was a chance of the Blues taking a lead, he added 137 for the eighth wicket with Matt Kelly before being given lbw three short of a double when he appeared to nick it. Abbott show superb stamina to take 6 for 89.Beat Queensland by one wicket
(see above)Beat Tasmania by 145 runs
An extraordinary comeback from New south Wales after being bundled out for 64 on the opening day. Despite a century from Jordan Silk, they managed to keep Tasmania just in sight and then set about atoning with the bat. Henriques and Nick Larkin hit hundreds to build the lead before the game was taken away by an unbroken stand of 189 between Abbott, with his maiden first-class hundred, and Mitchell Starc, who was somewhat miffed to be denied his chance of a first ton. At 3 for 153 midway through the final day, Tasmania had a chance of a draw but Lyon and Starc worked through the middle order as they lost 7 for 49.The absence of Moises Henriques leaves a big hole for New South Wales•Getty Images

Lost to Victoria by four wickets
A pitch that aided the spinners provided an enthralling, low-scoring contest at the SCG which the visitors claimed in a tense run chase despite Lyon taking his match haul to ten wickets. New South Wales had struggled to 165 on the first day, but Lyon took a Shield best 6 for 21 as Victoria lost 8 for 48 to claim a lead of just 35. However, the Blues then collapsed to 8 for 91 against the Victoria pace attack before Abbott’s 73 helped the last two wickets add 84 and set a tricky target. At 5 for 87 anything was possible, but 18-year-old Jake Fraser-McGurk played an excellent innings.Draw against Victoria
This match was also in Sydney due to a Covid-19 outbreak in Melbourne and this time New South Wales dominated, but were denied victory by Peter Handscomb’s fine century. Conway’s career-best 6 for 39 kept Victoria to 190, while Henriques’ 141 alongside Nevill’s 74 built a formidable advantage. The pitch, though, did not break up as may have been imagined and became more docile over the final two days while some time was also lost to rain.Nathan Lyon was the leading wicket-taker in the regular season•Getty Images

They were then set 295 on the final day with David Warner providing a strong platform that was superbly finished off by Henriques and Abbott in a stand of 141 in 30 overs.Lost to Tasmania by 298 runs
