Crystal Palace serious contenders for £200k-p/w January signing for Glasner

Crystal Palace have emerged as a serious contender to land an international defender in January as they look to recover from a poor start to the Premier League season, according to one report.

Crystal Palace see wings clipped

A tricky start to the season has undone much of the good work Oliver Glasner manager in south London at the end of last season, with a confused and toothless Crystal Palace side yet to manage a win in this season’s Premier League. Though they are not the only winless team, they have scored just five times so far this campaign despite shelling out on attacking trio Eddie Nketiah, Ismaila Sarr and Daichi Kamada over the summer.

The same number of goals as struggling Manchester United, they have found the net just once more than Southampton, who are the division’s lowest scorers. At the other end, Dean Henderson has been beaten on 10 occasions and Palace have laboured to three draws, losing four times already, though they did edge past Championship side QPR in the Carabao Cup thanks to Nketiah’s first and, as it stands, only goal for his new side.

There remains plenty of time to turn things around, and there is little pressure on Glasner, with Palace chairman Steve Parish willing to give him time to turn things around at Selhurst Park as he gets to grip with a new-look squad that has yet to truly be used thanks to injuries and form. Now, they are emerging as a potential destination for an out-of-favour star this January.

Palace serious contenders to sign England defender

That comes as Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips has revealed that Palace are one of the most “serious clubs” to watch when it comes to the future of Ben Chilwell.

The England defender was publicly cast out by Enzo Maresca but could not find a move away from Stamford Bridge before the summer transfer window closed, and has now been somewhat sheepishly added back into the Blues’ Premier League squad.

Despite this, it is clear that his future lies away from Stamford Bridge irrespective of his £200,000 a week deal in west London, which runs until 2027. There is quite a queue for his signature, with Crystal Palace, Fulham, Manchester United and Ipswich Town as well as clubs from across Europe keen to bring the 27-year-old defender out of the footballing wilderness.

As it stands, those clubs are all offering loan moves, something that Chelsea are yet to accept, and they are keen for a sale. But the Blues may be forced to consider cut-price options after shelling out £50m for the fullback, as they did with Sterling, who joined Arsenal on loan on deadline day on favourable terms to the Gunners.

Palace may hold an advantage in the race for Chilwell’s signature too, with his agency, CAA Stellar, also representing Palace no.1 Henderson, while they have good working relations with Chelsea after signing Trevoh Chalobah on loan in the summer.

However, a move for either Chilwell or Chalobah would have to be permanent for both to reunite at Selhurst Park, with the Premier League’s rules stating that only one loanee from any single club can be permitted. With Chalobah’s deal already sealed until the end of the season, a change to that seems unlikely, leaving a permanent deal for Chilwell as the only realistic solution.

With Tyrick Mitchell the only recognised left-sided defender in Glasner’s squad, it is clearly an area that will require attention in the winter window, though whether they will be able to negotiate a permanent deal for Chilwell remains to be seen.

'Man Utd got out of jail' – Roy Keane says Harry Maguire's last-minute winner shouldn't have counted after blasting 'shocking' first half display in FA Cup clash against Leicester

Roy Keane says Manchester United "got out of jail" with their late FA Cup win over Leicester City after blasting their "shocking" first half.

The United legend did not hold back when ripping into his old side's first 45 minutes at Old Trafford on Friday night. The Irishman added that Maguire's late header, which secured the Red Devils a 2-1 win, should have been ruled out as it was offside.

    WHAT ROY KEANE SAID

He said on ITV Sport at half-time: "It's shocking, really, really poor. you start looking at this United team for all the stats… No shots on target, two shots on target against Crystal Palace (a 2-0 home loss). They’re boring now. You feel like you should go into the Man Utd dressing room and remind them what the game is about – the goal is that end, you have to put the ball in the back of the net. It's as if they're not even aware of it. Leicester haven't been that great but they've been a bit sharper and they deserve to be in front. Nowhere near good enough. There's no energy, there's no energy in the stadium."

After the match, Keane added: "The linesman has to see it [Maguire being offside]. United got out of jail tonight. The performance itself was nowhere near good enough."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite being off the pace for long periods against Premier League strugglers Leicester, United squeaked into round five of the FA Cup as their title defence continues. Keane was not the only one to criticise United, though, as head coach Ruben Amorim said his players didn't perform well and that their late goal should have been chalked off.

West Ham ready to offer £30m to sign Michail Antonio replacement in January

West Ham are already looking ahead to the January transfer window as they look to turn around their poor start to the Premier League season, according to a fresh report.

West Ham boss Lopetegui in the firing line

Another disappointing defeat and performance piled the pressure on West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui, as his side fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half-time when Edson Alvarez was sent off, the Hammers offered very little as they were comfortably beaten by Forest, leaving the London side languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, a point above newly promoted Leicester City.

It followed a summer in which they backed Lopetegui significantly, signing eight new players for a total outlay in excess of £150m, headed by the arrival of Championship player of the year Crysencio Summerville and promising centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo.

Crysencio Summerville scores for West Ham

But, the former Wolves boss has already become the first West Ham boss to lose his first three Premier League home games, and there is little sign of the situation improving ten games into the season, piling pressure on him.

Though the Hammers board are still sticking with him, there is a feeling that upcoming games could be crucial as the Hammers face three sides below them alongside games against Arsenal and Newcastle, the calibre of teams that Lopetegui was signed to try and compete with.

Newcastle United (away)

One of their biggest problems has been finding the net, with West Ham having scored 13 times so far this season and lacking a clinical striker. Now, they are already looking to fix that in January.

West Ham ready to sign striker for £30m

It has been reported in Brazil that West Ham are ready to raid the South American market once more to sign Corinthians striker Igor Jesus. The Hammers have already signed Luis Guilherme in recent months, though the teenager is yet to feature significantly for Lopetegui’s side as he adapts to life in English football.

And Brazilian outlet Globo [via Sport Witness] claim that West Ham are now ready to follow that addition up with a move for Jesus. In fact, in “recent days”, intermediaries have “approached Botafogo owner John Textor” in order to make a verbal offer for Jesus, with West Ham “wanting to offer £30m” to sign the 23-year-old striker.

West Ham should sack Lopetegui and replace him with fantastic 4-2-3-1 boss

ByConnor Holden Nov 4, 2024

It is added that “Botafogo were impressed with these figures suggested by the agent but will only respond when Julen Lopetegui’s side table an official proposal”, something which could be forthcoming at the end of the Brazilian season, which coincides with the Premier League’s January transfer window.

Though they signed Niclas Füllkrug in the summer transfer window, injury to the German means that West Ham are still lacking a threat at the top of the pitch, with Michail Antonio and Danny Ings now in the twilight of their careers.

Jesus has grabbed eight goals and three assist this season in Brazil, and should he be able to translate his form to the Premier League, he could be a key signing for the Hammers as they look to recover from a dreadful start to the campaign.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Pep Guardiola is desperate to continue rebuilding his squad after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, reports, and sees Germany star Wirtz as a major player in the club's future. Leverkusen value their talisman at more than £85 million ($107m). De Bruyne is out of contract in the summer of 2025 and no renewal has been agreed, potentially leaving a vacancy for a younger replacement.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

De Bruyne turns 34 in June and is seeing his minutes managed more and more by Guardiola, who has also been fielding Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva, all of whom are 30 or older, in midfield. City signed Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov in January as they attempt to bring down the average age of their squad and the signing of Wirtz would be an enormous statement.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Wirtz has been a major part of the Bayer Leverkusen side that has been one of the best in Europe over the last 18 months. The German scored 18 goals and registered 20 assists as Leverkusen won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal and reached the Europa League final last term, and has notched another 26 goal involvements this season as they battle for the Bundesliga and Champions League.

    WHAT NEXT FOR WIRTZ?

Wirtz also starred for hosts Germany at Euro 2024 last summer, and a move to one of the richest clubs in the world is an inevitability at some stage. Bayern Munich are also said to be interested, with the Bavarians hoping to team him up with international team-mate Jamal Musiala. City are bound to face competition from elsewhere for his signature, too.

"Wonderful" Newcastle ace hit with immediate international injury concern

Reliable journalist Craig Hope has claimed that a “wonderful” Newcastle United player could now miss the entire international break after picking up an injury.

Newcastle pick up huge win at Nottingham Forest

The Magpies secured arguably their most important Premier League win of the season so far on Sunday afternoon due to the resilience on show, coming from behind to win 3-1 away to an in-form Nottingham Forest side.

There were plenty who understandably felt that Forest would prevail, considering they sat third in the table going into the weekend action, but Newcastle’s quality shone through, with Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes all scoring in the second half at the City Ground.

There are definite signs that the Magpies’ season is beginning to catch light, following some indifferent results and performances earlier in the campaign, especially having also beaten Arsenal 1-0 at St James’ Park in their previous league outing.

Newcastle are now up into eighth place in the Premier League and just one point adrift of the Champions League places, with belief growing that they could make a return to Europe’s top club competition after a couple of seasons away from it. Eddie Howe isn’t short of injury problems at the moment, however, and a new update has emerged on the fitness of one key player.

"Wonderful" Newcastle player an injury doubt

According to Hope on X, Newcastle star Anthony Gordon could now miss international duty with England over the next few weeks, having suffered a hip injury in the win over Forest.

This will immediately concern some Magpies supporters, seeing as the £60,000-a-week Gordon has grown into a vital attacking figure since arriving from Everton, being lauded by Troy Deeney recently.

“Newcastle are a better team when he is involved. He got an assist for Alexander Isak’s winner against Arsenal, but the way he drives with the ball and carries the team forward means he’s always a threat. He can be on the right, left or the middle – he’s just a wonderful football player for Newcastle and England. Getting injured and then missing a penalty against Everton could have knocked his confidence but didn’t.”

From a Newcastle perspective, the hope is that the club are simply being cautious with Gordon, potentially removing him from England action in order not to risk him. It does feel like an international break where players from many clubs will be withdrawn, even though they could probably still be deemed fit enough to go and represent their respective countries.

While some may not like the idea of clubs behaving in that way, the importance of keeping players fresh for club duties is huge, so if Gordon has any kind of issue, he shouldn’t be going anywhere near the Three Lions setup.

Better than Isak: 8/10 Newcastle star just dropped a "monumental" display

This man who won 10 duels was even better than Isak for Newcastle against Forest

ByConnor Holden Nov 10, 2024

The 23-year-old may still be waiting for his season to fully ignite, with only two goals coming his way in the Premier League, but his inch-perfect assist for Isak’s winner against Arsenal summed up his ability.

Mitchell Marsh steals the show as Perth Scorchers make it five in five

A red-hot Mitchell Marsh spoilt Aaron Finch’s dazzling Melbourne Renegades return as Perth Scorchers maintained their all-win record in this year’s BBL with a 21-run victory at Marvel Stadium.Marsh continued his purple patch with the bat, scoring a furious 53-ball 86 to power Scorchers to their highest-ever away total – 206 for 5.In his first match since leading Australia to T20 World Cup glory, Finch scored a 43-ball 68 and combined with Nic Maddinson in Renegades’ record second-wicket stand of 130.But Marsh produced more heroics to claim the scalp of Maddinson and Finch departed shortly after as the gallant Scorchers fell short.Marsh and Evans dominate Scorchers bowlers
Scorchers suffered a blow when the in-form Kurtis Patterson, who has been a revelation as an opener, was sidelined with a left quad injury. It meant Scorchers had their fourth different opening combination in a row, with a returning Cameron Bancroft opening with Josh Inglis.Inglis fell in the second over to James Pattinson, but that brought Marsh to the crease and the T20 World Cup hero again put on a show. After surviving an early chance, the former Scorchers skipper put the foot down with a blistering assault on Pattinson, who strayed on to the pads.Kane Richardson was the only Renegades bowler to make an impact•Getty Images

Marsh took a liking to the short boundaries square of the wicket and targeted in-form spinner Zahir Khan for special treatment as he powered to a 30-ball half-century. At the other side, a pumped-up Colin Munro, a centurion against Adelaide Strikers, hit an astonishing first-ball six after charging Will Sutherland, but lost momentum amid Marsh’s whirlwind.Marsh appeared a certainty to score his second BBL ton in three innings but fell to a loose shot in the 16th over to give Renegades hope. But impressive English import Laurie Evans batted superbly at the death, and fittingly ended a dominant Scorchers innings with a last-ball six as the league leaders recorded their second-highest score in franchise history.Fraser-McGurk and Zahir have a rough time
Jake Fraser-McGurk probably has the best catch of the BBL season wrapped up after his stunning one-hander on the boundary against Strikers. But cricket is a great leveller, and so it proved for the youngster, who dropped Marsh on the boundary when on 3. Marsh’s powerful pull shot would have hit Marvel Stadium’s roof had it been shut, but instead it travelled high into the sky making it awkward for Fraser-McGurk, who was distracted by the boundary rope and spilt the catch.Zahir, who has been arguably the best spinner in the BBL, struggled for the first time this season to finish with poor figures of none for 45 off his four overs. Only the experienced Kane Richardson – with his canny use of slower balls – was able to somewhat weather the storm and he was rewarded with the wickets of Marsh and Munro.Aaron Finch and Nic Maddinson put up 130 runs for the second wicket•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

Finch returns in style
Renegades needed a strong four-over powerplay and the early dismissal of youngster Mackenzie Harvey – bowled by a gem from Jason Behrendorff – brought together their two main stars. And Finch and Maddinson gave them hope with audacious batting to smash 47 off the powerplay.Finch, who had started his innings with a fluent straight drive, didn’t look rusty after his recovery from a knee injury with consecutive sixes off Tymal Mills in the fourth over lighting a fuse. Finch clearly had not lost his touch and in trademark fashion, he was perfectly still at the crease and swinging baseball style in a vintage performance. He clubbed 20 runs off Andrew Tye during the second power-surge over as Renegades sniffed a stunning heist. But Maddinson, who had a reprieve on 49, fell to Marsh and Renegades’ momentum was halted. The match was effectively over when Finch fell to Ashton Agar in the 16th over, but last-placed Renegades would be buoyed by the return of their ex-skipper.Scorchers attack finally put under pressure
Scorchers’ bowlers have been irresistible this season, with the most runs scored off them before this match just 151 by Brisbane Heat in their season opener. But even such a disciplined attack can look ragged and helpless when Finch and Maddinson are on song. For a while, they had no answers and looked rattled. But, in trademark fashion, they held their nerve and the game turned through a brilliant one-handed catch by wicketkeeper Inglis to dismiss Maddinson.
