Romario Shepherd has IPL in his sights after death-hitting heroics

Just like anyone else, IPL owners, head coaches and general managers are afflicted by recency bias. Whenever the time comes to sit down at the auction table, performances that are fresh in the memory are given greater weighting than those that happened several months previously. It is no surprise, given their usual windows in the calendar, that players who have performed well in the most recent Big Bash season tend to be popular at IPL auctions, regardless of the difference in standard and conditions. It is a widespread, long-standing cognitive bias – and one that cricketers themselves are fully aware of.In that light, England and West Indies’ players know that they are not only competing for a series win and for long-term retention in their respective XIs in Barbados this week, but also for a bigger bid at the auction. And with a dearth of seam-bowling allrounders available in the auction longlist – Sam Curran, Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes all opted out, while Chris Morris recently announced his retirement – Romario Shepherd’s fireworks on Sunday night have done his chances of a deal no harm at all.Shepherd hit 44 not out from 28 balls from No. 7 to take West Indies within one run of England’s total, adding 72 off 29 in an unbroken ninth-wicket stand with Akeal Hosein to add a sense of jeopardy to what had looked like a cruise to victory. Thirty of his runs came in sixes, including two over the longer leg-side boundary off Chris Jordan and one off Liam Dawson that cleared the Garfield Sobers Pavilion.”I try to focus on what is at hand right now and try and put my all in here,” Shepherd, who has entered February’s auction with an Rs. 75 lakh ($100,000 USD approx.) base price, said. “Eventually, if an IPL contract comes, that would be great for me. I’m not saying that I don’t think about it – I do think about it, but I try not to think about it during a game, I just focus on wherever the game is and trying to get ourselves out of a situation.”It’s a great platform. For any youngster, it’s their dream to go to the IPL and I’m no different. I’m trying my best to get myself in there, but at the same time trying to win a series here. It’s something that I’ve dreamed about for a very long time. My name was in the [auction] for the last three years, so this year, I’m looking forward to it.”Related

Shepherd had struggled early on in his innings, scoring only one single from his first seven balls and failing to pick Adil Rashid out of the hand, but immediately targeted Dawson when he came on to bowl the 13th over. He was one of only a handful of batters to clear the longer boundary – around 90 metres towards midwicket – and his clean hitting left England hanging on by their fingertips.”When I went out, the coach told me to take a few balls,” he explained. “Then when I got out there the ball was spinning and Rashid got me. I was like one off six balls, one off seven balls, so I was kind of on the back foot.”When I saw Liam come on for his first over, I said to myself I would try and take him down. I hit him for two sixes in that over so that gave me a push-start there. Eventually I started flowing better at the crease.”It plays with your mind to see that one side is very short and one side is very long. Eventually when Jordan came in that over, I had no choice but to try and take on the long boundary. I know as long as I hit them well, the boundary don’t matter.”Hosein hit three fours and two sixes off Saqib Mahmood’s final over to keep the game tense until the final ball, but was aggrieved that Mahmood’s first legitimate ball was not given as a wide, having appeared to reach him past the tramline. But Shepherd said that Joel Wilson, the umpire, was “only human” and that West Indies were more concerned about a sloppy night in the field than his decision-making.”I told Akeal: ‘don’t worry about it, you can hit the next couple for six and he can bowl a no-ball or another wide,'” Shepherd said. “The umpire missed that one, but he’s just human – hopefully he can correct his mistake in the upcoming games. I think that was a wide but he didn’t think so.”Yesterday was a total off-day: we didn’t field well, we didn’t catch well. Those are some of the little things that [cost] us last night: we could have got them down to less than 170 but we fielded poorly.”Reacting to the contest’s unexpected ending, England’s player-of-the-match Moeen Ali admitted that the power in West Indies’ batting line-up was “very scary”, and Shepherd agreed with the sentiment.”It must be frightening for other teams to know that our No. 10 batsman can do that,” he said. “For us, it’s a very big confidence booster for us to know that we bat this deep. We showed how well we can bat and we can get ourselves out of a situation from nowhere.”We just need to focus a little more on the powerplay and the middle phase, because the back end will take care of itself. We have a lot of power at the back end. We have to continue to work and hopefully we can pull off something special and win this series.”

Move over Kasanwirjo: Rangers must now unleash "thunderous" starlet

Glasgow Rangers must put their midweek Premiership defeat behind them as they travel to Hampden for the League Cup semifinal against Motherwell.

Aberdeen were too good for the Light Blues on Wednesday evening. If Philippe Clement was a man under pressure before that game, it is evident his head is now on the block unless something drastically changes over the next few weeks.

Securing a place in the League Cup final would be a good start and there could be a few changes ahead of the clash today.

One could see Neraysho Kasanwirjo move positions against the Steelmen…

Neraysho Kasanwirjo could move to centre-back

The Dutchman has played a variety of roles since arriving at Ibrox, including on both sides of the defence and in midfield.

Against the Dons, he was unleashed at left-back, but he didn’t offer much going forward. Indeed, the defender failed to attempt a dribble, make a key pass or even deliver an accurate cross during the game.

Defensively, he lost possession 14 times and won five of his eight duels. This afternoon, Clement should move him across to the heart of the defence in order to bring back a player who was rested against Aberdeen – Jefte.

Clement must unleash Jefte against Motherwell

Despite his tender age, the Brazilian has arguably been one of the finest signings made by the club this summer, especially considering his future potential.

The left-back has missed only three games for the Light Blues since joining, already establishing himself as a key member of the starting XI since Ridvan Yilmaz suffered an injury earlier this term.

In the Premiership, Jefte has created one big chance, averaging 0.5 key passes and succeeding with 1.5 dribbles per game, showing his attacking intent down the left flank.

Defensively, the youngster has won six total duels per game – a 52% success rate – while also making 2.3 tackles, 1.9 interceptions and recovering 3.8 balls per game, evidence that he can also be a huge asset when the Gers don’t have the ball.

When the Light Blues were first linked with the former Fluminense defender in January, Rangers Journal founder Kai Watson hailed the player, saying: “Jefté looks like he will be a quality attacking threat. He’s tall and quick while still remaining agile on the ball.

“He always looks to drive at the opposition defence and is comfortable going outside or cutting inside. He’s also not afraid of having a pop at goal and has a thunderous strike in his arsenal.”

The team missed his attacking threat down the wing against the Dons and this is something Clement should aim to rectify this afternoon, by bringing him back in at left-back.

Moving Kasanwirjo to the heart of the defence would allow Jefte to be unleashed in his favoured position. This could give Rangers the best chance of winning the tie and reaching the League Cup final for the third season in a row, by providing them with more quality in attack down the left flank, to cause the Motherwell defence plenty of problems.

Not just Clement: Rangers must cash in on their £30k-p/w star

Rangers latest defeat could have big implications to the manager and a few players.

Chattogram batters combine seamlessly to sink Khulna

Rejaur Rahman Raja took two wickets on BPL debut to seal a comfortable victory

How the match played outChattogram Challengers outplayed Khulna Tigers by 25 runs, securing a second win in three games in the BPL. A big-hitting powerplay and death overs propped their score up at an above-average 190 for 7 in 20 overs, before Rejaur Rahman Raja made a stunning BPL debut with three fiery overs. The uncapped Raja dealt Khulna an early blow when he struck Andre Fletcher on the neck. He removed Sikandar Raza, Fletcher’s concussion substitute, and Thisara Perera, apart from going for just nine runs in his first 18 deliveries. Left-arm quick Shoriful Islam was on the mark too, taking two wickets although he had Tanzid Hasan dropped at mid-on.Nasum Ahmed, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Benny Howell took one wicket each, as Chattogram won the game comfortably. That comfort came via two important batting periods. Chattogram struck 64 runs in the powerplay, and another 62 runs in the last five overs.Big hitChattogram’s openers got out trying to be too aggressive. Will Jacks and Kennar Lewis blasted off with 23 off the first over. The fifty was up in 3.3 overs, but both openers were gone by the fourth over with only 17 and 25 next to their names. After Afif Hossain and Sabbir Rahman batted steadily, Miraz and Howell got the run-rate back up.Miraz struck four boundaries in his 23-ball 30 while Howell struck an unbeaten 34 off 20 balls, with a bit of innovation in his five boundaries, that included an upper-cut six.Khulna had no such luck as their top order caved in with Fletcher being stretchered off. ESPNcricinfo understands that he is “feeling okay” but was taken to hospital as a precaution. Yasir Ali stood form, adding 43 runs for the fifth wicket with Raza. Yasir made 40 off 26 balls with three sixes and two fours, trying to keep Khulna in the game against the tide of a very high asking rate.Big missKhulna made an inauspicious start when Sohrawordi Shuvo, in his first BPL over in five years, conceded 23 runs. It also happened to be the most runs in the first over of a BPL innings. The previous highest was Chittagong Vikings’ 22 runs against Rajshahi Kings in the 2018-19 edition. Shuvo slipped a wide four off the first ball before Lewis slog swept him for a six. Jacks struck him down the ground for a four and followed it up with a swept six over long leg for the second six in the first over.Khulna would also hope that the veteran Mushfiqur Rahim comes good after he has had two low scores to start off the tournament.

Aston Villa now want to sign £8m midfielder for Unai Emery in January

Aston Villa now want to sign a new midfielder in January and have identified a potential bargain option available for as little as £8m to bolster Unai Emery’s ranks for the second half of the campaign, according to a fresh report.

Aston Villa working on tight budget

Though Aston Villa avoided financial fair play penalties over the summer thanks to the sale of Douglas Luiz, there are still constraints around their spending for the seasons to come.

Douglas Luiz for Aston Villa

The club posted losses of £120m last year and spent close to £130m over the summer, with Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen headlining their arrivals list. In fact, only five Premier League clubs spent more than Unai Emery’s side.

£205.9m

Brighton and Hove Albion

£192m

Tottenham Hotspur

£133.5m

West Ham United

Though NSWE are no strangers to splashing the cash in recent seasons, Villa are also keen to hunt for bargains, as they showed through the signing of Ross Barkley from Luton Town over the summer, and with the Villans keen to catch the clubs at the top of the Premier League, they will have to continue that savvy spending in the transfer windows ahead amid links to a loan move for Arda Guler.

To that end, they have reportedly identified a bargain midfield target in January.

Aston Villa chase £8m midfielder

That is according to German outlet Bild [Via Sport Witness], who report that the Villans are chasing a move to sign Mainz’s Nadiem Amiri in what could prove a cheap move.

Amiri hit the headlines in 2021 for scoring a Puskas contender while at Bayer Leverkusen, but has blossomed into a reliable player for Mainz in the time since.

Now 28 years of age, Amiri has grabbed three goals and two assists in 10 Bundesliga outings, and his form has caught the eye of the Midlands side.

As per the report, Villa “sent a scout to follow the 28-year-old live in action in his side’s 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund earlier this month”, and are ready to make a move for him in 2025.

Aston Villa could now pounce on "fantastic" Premier League star in January

He could be an opportunity too good to turn down for Unai Emery.

2 ByBen Browning Nov 26, 2024

Though he is under contract in Germany until 2028. it is added that “the Bundesliga side would consider selling him for €10m” [£8.3m] in January, a small fee that seems somewhat low given his importance to Mainz and their position fighting for a spot in Europe next season.

At 28, Amiri’s arrival would very much be one for the present, with the German already in his prime years. However, he could provide strong competition and cover for Morgan Rodgers, who has proved something of a revelation in the early stages of the season, culminating in a first England senior team call up.

Once more, it could be a case of Aston Villa grabbing a bargain to strengthen their squad should they opt to pursue the Mainz star, and it could be just what they need ahead of trying to compete on multiple fronts for the remainder of the campaign.

'It's karma' – Myles Lewis-Skelly told to 'stay humble' by Arsenal legend after mocking Erling Haaland and costing Gunners Premier League title shot with another red card

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has urged Myles Lewis-Skelly to 'stay humble' after he mocked Erling Haaland.

After going a goal down in the first half against West Ham last weekend, Mikel Arteta introduced Lewis-Skelly in place of Riccardo Calafiori. The Gunners wonderkid, however, lasted a little less than 20 minutes on the pitch as he was shown a direct red card, following a foul on Mohammed Kudus. Ten men Arsenal eventually failed to find an equaliser and dropped crucial three points at home.

Petit has advised the 18-year-old to remain 'humble' and act more maturely on the pitch. The Frenchman also slammed Lewis-Skelly for mocking Erling Haaland during the Gunners' 5-0 win over Manchester City earlier this month. The Arsenal academy graduate had copied Haaland's celebration, sitting in a meditation pose after scoring his first-ever senior goal against the champions.

WHAT EMMANUEL PETIT SAID

Speaking to , the former Premier League star said: "Myles Lewis-Skelly has to show more maturity and my main piece of advice would be to stay humble. Stay humble, do your talking on the pitch. I’ve been impressed with his performances so far but the mocking of Erling Haaland and Manchester City… come on.

"It’s karma, you need to focus on winning each game and now it’s another red card. How many stupid red cards have Arsenal had this season and even since Mikel Arteta arrived? Arsenal lost to West Ham and the players take the blame alongside Arteta. Arsenal have not been able to show their quality when it matters and although mathematically they can do it, they don’t have the character and the personality for that."

Rohit on Kuldeep and Chahal: 'It's certainly on my mind to get them back together'

India’s captain stressed that Kuldeep would need to be given time to get back into his groove following his return from knee surgery

Shashank Kishore05-Feb-20222:17

Rohit Sharma: ‘We don’t want to rush Kuldeep into things’

It’s on Rohit Sharma’s mind to get Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal “back together”, and whenever that happens, give them time to get into their groove. Rohit, who begins his first series as India’s full-time ODI captain, is also mindful of handling “Kuldeep’s situation carefully” as he plots his way back into competitive cricket following knee surgery last October.Kuldeep’s recovery has taken him nearly four months. His rehabilitation coincided with India’s white-ball domestic tournaments in November-December, which means he will be heading into the ODI series against West Indies having barely played any cricket over recent months. India would have held just two training sessions by the time they take the field for the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday.Kuldeep’s only recent outing came in January, when he was part of an exhibition game in Meerut organised by the Uttar Pradesh government, involving several Ranji Trophy players from the state. So, in a sense, Kuldeep will be taking baby steps back from injury after missing the entire IPL 2021.He was left out of the first leg in April 2021 because Kolkata Knight Riders preferred Varun Chakravarthy’s mystery spin, and he withdrew from the second leg once the knee injury came to light in the UAE. In between, he was part of India’s second-string squad that played a limited-overs series in Sri Lanka, where he picked up four wickets in four matches. One of the reasons why Kuldeep and Chahal will perhaps be given the opportunity to rediscover their partnership is because of their past success. Between the end of the 2017 Champions Trophy and the start of the 2019 World Cup, Kuldeep (87 wickets at 21.74) and Chahal (66 wickets at 25.68) were the top two wicket-takers in all ODI cricket.Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav reunite at the India nets•BCCI”They are going to be crucial going forward,” Rohit said ahead of Sunday’s series opener in Ahmedabad. “These two guys have been great performers for us in the past, they’ve certainly created an impact in those years whenever they’ve played together. In the middle why they have been left out was because of combination. We wanted to get an extra batter in, at times we wanted to get an extra seamer in, so that is probably why one of the two have missed out, but it’s certainly on my mind to get them back together, Kuldeep especially.”Rohit emphasised on allowing Kuldeep to “get into his groove” and “find his rhythm” repeatedly, and said the team would give him every opportunity to come into his own, even if he took his time.”He hasn’t played since the IPL, then he got injured and was out since then,” Rohit said. “He hasn’t played a lot of games after that, so we want to get him in slowly. We don’t want to rush into things. It can’t do good for either the team or him. You have to give him some time to come into his groove, to come into his own, and that is going to take a little bit of time. We straightaway don’t want to put him into a situation where we are asking too much of him also. I think for us, it’s important we handle that situation carefully. For us, very important players both of these guys.”Chahal is another curious case. Having been a key white-ball player over the past four years, he has lately found himself at the crossroads, with the team management seemingly prepared to look beyond him. First, they went to Rahul Chahar for thê T20 World Cup. Now, their search for another legspin option has led them to young Ravi Bishnoi. Where Chahal is old-school – he relies on flight, drift and dip – Bishnoi has a quick-arm action, is faster through the air, and gets more bounce.Rohit didn’t go into the specifics of who plays and who doesn’t but touched upon the need to remain consistent in selection, be clear with players about their roles, and give them a long rope.”Chahal obviously played in South Africa, Kuldeep has just come back into the squad now. Obviously, we want to give them an opportunity, but it can happen over the course of time. It just cannot happen suddenly. Kuldeep needs to play a lot of games to get his groove and rhythm back and we do understand that. Keeping everything in mind, we want to move forward and whatever is going to help the team, we will try and take those steps.”

Smith and Labuschagne miss hundreds as Test heads towards stalemate

Pakistan’s bowlers plugged away on a docile surface with Shaheen Shah Afridi causing some problems

Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith frustratingly missed out on centuries, but Australia continued their strong batting response against a toiling Pakistan during a truncated day four as the first Test moved closer to an inevitable draw on a flat Rawalpindi pitch. In reply to Pakistan’s massive first innings of 476 for 4, Australia reached stumps at 449 for 7 with Mitchell Starc on 12 not out and skipper Pat Cummins unbeaten on 4 to trail by just 27 runs amid this ongoing stalemate. An under-pressure Australia mustered an impressive batting effort even though their top-order missed out on centuries in the first series between the teams in Pakistan since 1998. Labuschagne (90) and Smith (78) – along with Usman Khawaja (97) and David Warner (68) on day three – left hundreds on the table amid barren conditions for bowlers.Even though they missed out, it was the first time Australia’s top four had all made half-centuries in an overseas Test since 2008 in Delhi. In-form No.5 Travis Head, who showcased outrageous aggression during the Ashes, was the first batter in the match unable to reach double figures after making just 8.After a patchy performance on day three, Pakistan bowled with more discipline led by quick Shaheen Shah Afridi, who lifted their sagging spirits with the key wicket of Labuschagne in the middle session amid speeds nudging 145kph/90mph. He continued to bend his back just before stumps, unleashing menacing yorkers to no avail as the sting came out of the contest. An energetic Shaheen, the standout quick in the match, had 1 for 80 off 28 overs in an encouraging display for a shorthanded Pakistan attack.Cameron Green played some pleasing songs•AFP/Getty Images

Shaheen aside, much like Australia’s workmanlike bowlers during the opening two days, Pakistan’s attack has not been able to penetrate consistently on a pitch set for criticism unless something miraculous is conjured on the final day.In batting-friendly conditions, as he held together Australia’s inexperienced middle-order, Smith was on a mission eyeing just his second ton in his last 16 Tests. He wound back the clock with unwavering concentration in a bid to end Australia’s century jinx in the innings.Smith, who averaged 30 in the Ashes, had sucked the life out of Pakistan who resorted to quick Naseem Shah bowling relentless short-pitched deliveries after tea. Underlining their helplessness, left-arm spinner Nauman Ali bowled a negative line outside leg stump, but the defensive ploy did the trick.Play was sleepwalking until No. 6 Cameron Green, who had displayed great maturity in his first Test innings away from home, was lured by Nauman into a sweep shot only to top edge to short fine leg. It ended a watchful 48 off 109 balls from the emerging allrounder who helped steady Australia after a couple of wickets in the middle session. In a shock, as he seemed a dead set certainty to cross triple figures, Smith gloved an attempted sweep off Nauman to end his 196-ball vigil and continue his century drought. The vice-captain was livid and muttered to himself in disgust as he trudged off the field. But Smith’s dismissal didn’t spark the match into life although Alex Carey – coming off a troubled performance behind the stumps – fell for 19 just before bad light ended play three overs before scheduled stumps.Even though the ground was bathed in sunshine, the morning session was wiped out after heavy rain overnight lashed Rawalpindi causing wet patches on the field, including on one of the bowlers’ run-ups, reducing the day’s play to a scheduled 67 overs.Pakistan were hoping the sedate pitch may have spiced up after a lengthy stint under cover but it was much the same on resumption with spinners Nauman and Sajid Khan unable to conjure much excitement.Combining for their sixth Test century partnership, Labuschagne and Smith were set for the long haul as Australia eyed reeling in Pakistan’s big first innings total. Labuschagne, who looked in sublime touch late on day three, added 21 runs to his overnight total before falling short of a ton in just his seventh Test away from Australia. In what proved to be arguably the best passage of the day’s play, Shaheen was engaged in an absorbing battle with the bubble-gum chewing Labuschagne who ruthlessly picked off boundaries. But Shaheen had the last laugh when he enticed a loose drive from around the wicket, forcing Labuschagne into edging to a diving Abdullah Shafique at first slip.In a recurring theme for the tourists, Labuschagne couldn’t quite believe he had missed out on a century but Australia did enough to move towards parity and inch this historic series-opener towards the predictability of a stale draw.

Celtic will regret losing incredible star who’s now compared to Bellingham

Celtic have had a sensational start to the 2024/25 campaign across all competitions and Brendan Rodgers will surely be delighted with how his team have performed.

They are sat at the top of the Scottish Premiership table and have won 14 of their 15 matches in the division, whilst they have also only lost once in five outings in the Champions League.

The Hoops have a League Cup final clash with Rangers at Hampden Park to look forward to on Sunday, when they can lift the first piece of silverware of the season with a win.

Celtic have been fantastic across all competitions, domestically and in Europe, and are competing to improve upon the two trophies won by Rodgers in his first season back at the club last term.

The only negative, and it is only a negative if you perceive it to be important, is the lack of homegrown talent in the squad. No British player or academy product under the age of 26 has played more than one minute in the Premiership for the Hoops this season, with Francis Turley playing one minute.

Celtic, however, could rectify that in January by swooping to sign Motherwell central midfielder Lennon Miller to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

Celtic's interest in Lennon Miller

The Boot Room reported last month that the Scottish giants are one of the teams interested in signing the Scotland U21 international when the January transfer window opens for business.

Rangers and Celtic are both hoping to keep the talented 18-year-old gem in the Premiership ahead of the second half of the season, amid interest from a host of teams from England and Italy.

Bologna, who signed Lewis Ferguson from Aberdeen, and Atalanta are both looking to swoop for the teenage gem, whilst Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Liverpool are among the English teams in the race for his signature.

The report added that Motherwell, however, are looking for a fee in the region of £5m for the young midfielder, and it remains to be seen whether or not the Hoops are willing to shell out that kind of money for his signature.

His performances in the Premiership for his current club suggest that the quality is there for him to come in and be the only Scottish teenager playing regularly for Celtic this season.

As you can see in the table above, Miller has offered a regular threat as a creator in the middle of the park for Motherwell, with 30 key passes in 15 games.

He has coupled that with defensive nous, as shown by his 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game – more than any Celtic midfielder has averaged, and this shows that the 18-year-old has delivered quality all-round performances in the top-flight.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Whilst Miller appears to be a big talent, given his performances at such a young age, Celtic already lost an even bigger talent in the form of Ben Doak, who had come up through the academy at Parkhead.

How much Celtic lost Ben Doak for

In the summer of 2022, the Scottish teenager opted to move on from Glasgow to sign for Premier League giants Liverpool for a compensation fee of just £600k, as he had not signed a professional contract with the Hoops.

He had come up through the youth ranks with Celtic and eventually made his first-team breakthrough under Ange Postecoglou in the 2021/22 campaign, with 25 minutes across two Premiership matches.

That early exposure, at the age of just 16, was not enough to convince the left-footed sensation that his future was in Scotland, though, and he decided to try his luck down south for Jurgen Klopp.

The teenage whiz made five first-team appearances for Liverpool in the 2022/23 campaign and a further five in the 2023/24 season, despite missing a whopping 43 matches through a meniscus injury.

Doak was then sent out on loan to Middlesbrough in the English Championship by new Liverpool boss Arne Slot this term, and he has thrived for club and country.

Why Ben Doak is a bigger talent than Lennon Miller

Despite being less than a year older than Miller, the Liverpool youngster has already been capped six times by Scotland’s senior team, whilst the Motherwell gem is still awaiting his first cap.

All six of his caps came in the UEFA Nations League and the teenage starlet caught the eye with six key passes, two ‘big chances’ created, one assist, and six completed dribbles, starting four of those matches.

This shows that Doak has emerged as a regular starter, with four starts in six caps, for Scotland at the age of 19, whereas Miller is yet to make the step up from U21 level.

After his showing against Croatia, pundit Ally McCoist claimed he gave Man City star Josko Gvardiol a “going over” and described him as a “fearless” star who is similar to Real Madrid sensation Jude Bellingham, in the sense that both young players play with freedom in their games.

That is not to say that he is as good as Bellingham, who has scored 28 goals in 60 matches for Real, but both players thrive at first-team level at such a young age because they are not afraid to express themselves and their quality on the pitch against more experienced stars.

The Liverpool loanee’s form in the Championship for Middlesbrough, who are fighting for promotion to the Premier League, also shows that he is able to shine domestically.

As you can see in the table above, Doak has averaged more key passes per game and recorded the same number of assists as Miller in fewer league appearances this season.

Whilst it is difficult to compare the two players directly, given Doak is a winger and Miller is a central midfielder, the former Celtic ace’s emergence for club and country suggests that he is the bigger talent of the two of them, and the Hoops lost him for just £600k.

Unfortunately, there was little that the Bhoys could have done to prevent him from chasing his dreams at Anfield, and his development since moving to England suggests that he made the right decision.
