The football world continues to grapple with the death of both Jota and his brother Andre Silva on Wednesday night. As avid fans of the game, the Gallagher brothers delivered their own special tribute to his memory, flashing Jota's jersey on screen during their first performance of their breakthrough hit in 16 years.

The crowd in attendance at the Principality Stadium greeted the reveal with rapturous applause. One concert-goer described the tribute as "beautifully poignant". The band have often used Live Forever to pay homage to those no longer with us. At their 1996 show at Maine Road, images of their musical influences Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley and John Lennon accompanied the song. In 2017, Liam performed the song with Coldplay's Chris Martin at the One Love Manchester Concert, an event held for the victims of the Manchester Bombing.

FOOTBALL PAYS RESPECTS TO JOTA

Earlier on Friday, Jota's former captain Jordan Henderson visited Anfield to pay his respects, while compatriot Jose Mourinho shared a touching message of condolence, asserting that Jota will "always be part of the family" at Anfield. They have added their voice to a chorus of heartfelt messages from across the world of football.

It is a fitting farewell for a man who was universally loved by those who met him, worked with him and watched him play. His legacy will live forever.

Jhye Richardson sidelined after another shoulder dislocation

Luckless Western Australia fast bowler Jhye Richardson has suffered another injury blow after he dislocated his shoulder while fielding in a second XI match for WA against South Australia in Adelaide last week.Richardson was preparing to make his Sheffield Shield return for WA this week, also against South Australia at Adelaide Oval, after making a successful comeback from hamstring surgery in the Marsh Cup earlier this month.Richardson made 85 for WA’s second XI at Park 25 in Adelaide last week and bowled eight overs in the first innings including three maidens. But it is understood he dislocated his shoulder while diving in the field and he did not bat or bowl again in the match although it is hoped the injury will only set him back a few weeks, with surgery not required.”Scans on Jhye Richardson’s right shoulder which was dislocated in the second XI match last Tuesday have cleared him from any major structural damage,” WA confirmed in a statement. “As a nationally contracted player, WA Cricket is working with Cricket Australia to determine his return to play.”Richardson first dislocated his right shoulder while diving in the field during an ODI for Australia in March 2019 against Pakistan in Sharjah which ruled him out of the 2019 World Cup and the Ashes. He eventually had surgery on the shoulder after further dislocations. He fought his way back to international cricket taking a maiden Test five-wicket haul against England in December 2021. But a series of soft tissue injuries have plagued him since then including suffering a serious hamstring injury in the BBL last summer that required surgery and required a long rehabilitation over the winter. His return to both the Marsh Cup and Sheffield Shield was being carefully mapped out by WA. He was set to replace Lance Morris in the Shield squad this week as Morris is also being carefully managed ahead of Australia’s Test summer where he may be in line to make his Test debut depending on how Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins recover after a long World Cup campaign.

'That's a massive boost for us' – Edwards pleased to get first big World Cup win out of the way

“Obviously proud, I suppose, of the group, and putting in that performance, as a whole and being able to play my part”

McClenaghan: A classic captain’s knock from Edwards

Scott Edwards led from the front to take Netherlands to their most famous ODI World Cup win – their first over a Test-playing nation in five appearances at the tournament – when they beat South Africa in Dharamsala on Tuesday. He was “extremely proud” of his team, and “very excited to get our first win out of the way” in this edition, Edwards said at the presentation ceremony after the game.”We came into this tournament with high expectations, we feel like we’re playing good cricket, we’ve got a lot of good players… but in saying that, we know that there are nine other very good sides here,” he said. “So, yeah, very excited to get our first win out of the way after three games and hopefully a few more to come.”That’s a massive boost for us. In both the first two games, we were in decent positions, but we sort of fell away through the middle. Nice that we could put a few partnerships together at the end [against South Africa] and get ourselves to a total which we thought could be competitive.”Related

Edwards walked out when Netherlands, after being put into bat, were 82 for 5 with not many batters left. That soon became 112 for 6 and then 140 for 7, but Edwards partnered with Roelof van der Merwe for 64 runs for the eighth wicket and then had a 41-run stand for the ninth with Aryan Dutt in next to no time – Dutt smashed 23 not out in nine balls – to take Netherlands to 245 for 8.It didn’t appear a match-winning total at the time, but it was certainly competitive, as Edwards put it, and possibly more than what South Africa thought they would have to chase.Edwards finished with 78 not out in 69 balls, which later earned him the Player of the Match award.”I think over the last couple of games, our issue’s been too many of our middle-order batters getting out before the end of the game,” he said. “So I was just sort trying to take it deep and hope that a couple of guys around me chip in and… yeah, we were lucky enough to get I don’t know how many towards the end there, but it was nice.”First, there was van der Merwe, the one-time South Africa international, who scored 29 in 19. “He’s good fun to bat with,” Edwards said. “He runs hard, which I like, and he hits it to quite strange areas. Good to watch and I am sure it’s good from the outside as well.”And then Dutt. “I think it was pretty easy on my behalf [batting with Dutt],” Edwards said. “I just sort of got him on strike and he was just clearing the ropes. That’s some of the best hitting I have seen in a long time, especially from a No. 10 bat. So, yeah, he’s got the talent and it was awesome to see today.”For the record, Dutt hit three sixes in his cameo, one each off Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Gerald Coetzee in the last three overs. And then the bowling group came together. South Africa were 44 for 4, then 109 for 6, and much like the Netherlands innings, there was a bit of late-order resistance, but it was way too much for them to pull off.Scott Edwards hit an unbeaten 78 off 69 balls•AFP/Getty Images

“Obviously, yeah, proud, I suppose, of the group, and putting in that performance, as a whole and being able to play my part,” Edwards said. “We came into the tournament and, we wanted to have a chance of making the semi-finals, and if you want to do that, you’ve got to beat teams obviously. South Africa is probably one of the favourites, the way they have been playing. It’s a big win for us.”With Netherlands playing South Africa, there is always the talk of how much some of the Netherlands players have benefitted from their time playing in South Africa. There is a sense of familiarity and, not to forget, Netherlands did beat South Africa at the T20 World Cup last year too.”We obviously have guys who have played with these guys before so, yeah, we come up with a few match-ups, and some days it works and some days it doesn’t,” Edwards said. “So yeah, it’s nice that a few things came off today.”And, of course, it’s a time for Netherlands cricket fans, some of who were at the ground, to celebrate.”I’m sure there’s plenty of fans staying up [back home] from watching the game,” Edwards said. “There’s always a lot of supporters around. So, yeah, extremely grateful for all the support we’ve had and hopefully a few messages from them and that sort of thing.”

FUTURO É NO TIMÃO?

O Corinthians é um clube que sempre me deixou à vontade, me respeitou bastante.

The Australia spinner, eighth on the all-time Test wicket-takers’ list with 496, is expected to be available for the whole summer.Lyon, who recently returned to playing after a serious calf tear during the second Test against England in June limited his Ashes involvement, revealed last month that the Lancashire deal was on the table. He will arrive ahead of the start of the LV= Insurance County Championship in April, during which he will team up with long-time Ashes rival James Anderson, and is set to be available in all formats.Related

“This is an exciting opportunity for me, and I am really looking forward to heading over to England for a full season of county cricket with Lancashire,” Lyon said. “I love playing cricket in England. I’m keen to keep learning, keep improving my game and hopefully I can contribute to winning matches for the Red Rose and pass on some of the experiences that I have gained over the years throughout my career.”They have a strong squad at Lancashire and Emirates Old Trafford is a really great venue to play cricket at, so I am looking forward to that. It will also be great to catch up with Jimmy Anderson too.”Lyon has previously played in the Championship for Worcestershire and had signed with Hampshire for the 2020 season before the deal was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.Lancashire are currently without a head coach, after the departure of Glenn Chapple, but Mark Chilton, director of cricket performance, said that Lyon would be “an important player” as the club looked to improve on a run of near misses that has seen them finish as runners-up in all three county competitions in recent years.Chilton said: “Nathan is an extremely skilled and experienced operator and, once we heard that he was available for the duration of next summer, we jumped at the opportunity to add him to our squad for the 2024 season.”His bowling record in both international and domestic cricket speaks for itself, and we believe that he will be an important player for us with the ball as we look to achieve our goals in all competitions.”We have several young spin bowlers in our squad and for them to have the opportunity to learn from and play alongside somebody with almost 500 Test match wickets will be invaluable in their development and I am sure Nathan will play an equally significant role off the pitch as he will on it.”

Hope reveals Dhoni inspiration after finishing chase in style

Shai Hope sealed a dramatic victory for his West Indies side over England with three sixes in four balls off Sam Curran in Antigua on Sunday, then called upon his players to back up their performances next week as they look to clinch a series win.Hope’s unbeaten 109 off 83 balls was his 16th ODI century and the fastest of his career. He brought it up with a flurry of sixes to take West Indies over the line, belting a Curran full toss over wide long-on, pulling a shorter ball over deep midwicket to bring up three figures and repeating the shot to complete a four-wicket win with seven balls to spare.”A very, very famous person, MS Dhoni – we had a chat a while ago, and he was saying, ‘You always have a lot more time than you think,'” Hope said at the post-match presentation. “That’s one thing that has stuck with me throughout the years I’ve been playing ODI cricket.Related

Speaking to CWI’s in-house channels, he added: “The dimensions of the field and then the wind factor there, I thought the best thing to do was to target that particular over. We knew it was a challenge to score from the other end, especially going against the breeze… regardless of what happened, I was going to try and take down that second-to-last over to give us the best chance of winning the game.”After the second [six of the 49th over], I knew we pretty much had the game in the balance. If we had that over to finish the game, I always try to finish the game with one over to spare if I can. I don’t want to leave it to anyone else, so the aim was to finish off at the back end.”Hope took over as West Indies’ full-time ODI captain earlier this year and while he oversaw an unsuccessful attempt at World Cup qualification in Zimbabwe, he has thrived with the bat since taking on the role. He has moved down to No. 4 after spending much of his career opening, and there has been a notable improvement in both his average and strike rate compared to his overall record. He also became the 11th West Indies batter to reach 5000 runs in men’s ODIs, during what was his 114th innings in the format. Hope was the joint-third-fastest batter of any nationality to reach the landmark, behind Babar Azam (97) and Hashim Amla (101) and level with Viv Richards and Virat Kohli.”It was in a winning cause, and that’s all I play for,” he said. “The stats will come as a bypass [sic] but my aim and my thing is to win games… It feels good, man. It contributed to a win, so I’m just happy that the guys got over the line.”Hope also hailed the contribution of Romario Shepherd, who made 48 off 28 balls during an 89-run stand for the sixth wicket. “He was amazing,” Hope said. “He’s one of those guys you can depend on and he’s continued to show his worth at this level… we’re starting the series on a high and the aim is to repeat this in the second game [on Wednesday].”West Indies’ run chase – their second-highest in men’s ODIs – was set up by Alick Athanaze and Brandon King’s 104-run opening stand. “They’re both quality players,” Hope said. “Again, it’s about how you can continue from this position. You want some consistency, not just a one-off to show the world you can do something.”Whatever is on the board, we have to chase it. If you want to win games, we can’t only win games when we’re bowling teams out for 160 or 150: we’ve got to win from any position. That’s the belief that we need to have in the dressing room. I’m going to be pushing that regardless of what’s going on.”
