Four wins in five the target as table-toppers Royals take on Titans

Both teams have had some impressive results but have areas of concern to address to remain in the top four

Rashid Khan: To be an Afghan player and be on verge of 100 IPL wickets is amazing

Big pictureIs this going to be the day we finally see a captain winning the toss and opting to bat? If the coin falls Sanju Samson’s way against Gujarat Titans in Navi Mumbai, Rajasthan Royals may just do that. After all, their three wins – in four games – have come batting first, a promising start to IPL 2022 that has kept them top of the points table. A win on Thursday will keep them there. A loss will put their opponents at No. 1 for the time being. With the ball, Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal have led the way. Boult showed in Royals’ three-run win over Lucknow Super Giants that a par total could be defended if the new-ball bowler picks off a few in the powerplay. Chahal continues to take the wickets in partnership with R Ashwin through the middle overs, and takes them at a miserly economy rate too. Prasidh Krishna bowls in tandem with Boult and then again later, and young quick Kuldeep Sen showed on debut the other day why he is rated highly by the Royals management – he successfully defended 14 runs in the final over bowling to Marcus Stoinis on Sunday.Watch the IPL live on ESPN+

With the bat, Jos Buttler and Shimron Hetmyer have been making crucial contributions, Devdutt Padikkal is beginning to bloom after being promoted to the opening spot, and Samson has looked good without putting up a big score since the first game. However, there is a weakness that has been exposed a few times – the lower-middle order. At No. 6, Riyan Parag has not contributed much, and Ashwin at No. 7 is not the power player some teams want at that spot. That’s one of the areas Titans should look to exploit, with wicket-taking bowlers operating through the middle overs. Lockie Ferguson – although expensive in his last game – has been bowling at over 145kph, Mohammed Shami is getting the new ball to move around, Rashid Khan has four bankable overs and Hardik Pandya is completing his quota. If these four have Royals on the mat early, then Titans’ Achilles heel – the fifth bowler, currently comprising of overs from Darshan Nalkande and Rahul Tewatia – can be protected. If the wickets don’t come, then those four overs could hurt Titans against a batting line-up like that of Royals. The Titans have another problem, an issue that might have been glossed over because of the hat-trick of wins to start their season, but runs are not coming from Matthew Wade and David Miller. Apart from scores of 1 and 6, Wade has a 29-ball 30 and a 19-ball 19. Miller has not been able to deliver the death-overs blows. That risks Titans becoming a one-trick pony, relying heavily on a big Shubman Gill score and hoping for solid contributions from Hardik, the young Sai Sudharsan and Tewatia. They have options – Wriddhiman Saha, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Alzarri Joseph and Dominic Drakes among them – to replace both players, but will they, just yet?Likely XIsRajasthan Royals: 1 Jos Buttler, 2 Devdutt Padikkal, 3 Sanju Samson (capt, wk), 4 Rassie van der Dussen, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Riyan Parag, 7 R Ashwin, 8 Trent Boult, 9 Yuzvendra Chahal, 10 Prasidh Krishna, 11 Kuldeep SenGujarat Titans: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Matthew Wade/Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 Sai Sudharsan, 4 Hardik Pandya (capt), 5 David Miller, 6 Abhinav Manohar, 7 Rahul Tewatia, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Lockie Ferguson, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Darshan NalkandeWhat’s not to love? Yuzvendra Chahal has picked up wickets – two, three, even four – each time he has bowled this season•BCCI

Strategy punt Can Hardik trust Tewatia for four full overs and drop Nalkande to get some extra batting cushion in the middle order? Against Royals – and in partnership with Rashid – there’s a case for it. The Royals have the poorest average against legspinners in IPL 2022 – 25.5 runs/wicket – and Buttler, Hetmyer and Samson have all returned below average numbers against legspin. Chahal and Ashwin could time their spells with Hardik’s arrival to the crease. Hardik’s strike rate for Titans is not the same from his Mumbai Indians days, a factor of batting at No. 4 and being captain perhaps, but Ashwin and Chahal could capitalise on this. Currently, his strike rate is 104 against Chahal and 100 against Ashwin.Stats that matter The game is a battle between the highest six-hitters [Royals: 11.5 per match] and the fewest six-hitters [Titans: four per match] in IPL 2022. Not surprisingly, Buttler (15) and Hetmyer (14) are the top six-hitters of the competition. Royals have both the Orange Cap holder [Buttler] and Purple Cap holder [Chahal]. Samson has struggled against pace this season. His strike rate against pace is 109. Compare that to his spin strike rate of 236 and you know what to attack him with. Rashid is one strike away from becoming the fourth overseas player to 100 IPL wickets. Sunil Narine (147*), Lasith Malinga (170) and Dwayne Bravo (174*) have more.

Liverpool scouts sent on fresh mission after Edwards makes first enquiry

As those at Anfield begin to think about potential upgrades for Arne Slot, Michael Edwards reportedly sent Liverpool scouts on a fresh mission to watch an attacking target he has already enquired about.

Liverpool transfer news

Heading into the weekend eight points clear at the top of the Premier League standings and the only side with a 100% record in the Champions League after defeating Real Madrid, things couldn’t be going much better for Slot’s Liverpool side.

The Reds – barring one slip against Nottingham Forest – have been untouchable and have the chance to go 11 points clear of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this weekend.

However, those at Anfield can’t afford to rest on their laurels, especially if Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all fail to sign fresh deals to keep them at the club beyond this summer.

It would be the ultimate failure if Liverpool allowed all three to depart as free agents. But if that does happen, the Reds must turn to the transfer market.

With that said, according to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool scouts were recently sent on a fresh mission to watch Georgiy Sudakov as his Shakhtar Donetsk side suffered a 3-2 defeat against PSV Eindhoven in midweek. This follows Michael Edwards’ initial enquiry earlier this year about the attacking midfielder, who is valued at £50m and reportedly ready to leave his current club in January.

Heorhiy Sudakov for Shakhtar

The 23-year-old has continued to impress for Shakhtar, despite defeat against PSV in the Champions League last time out. And given that Slot’s system allows No 10s to flourish, Sudakov could emerge to become the ultimate option at the heart of the Dutchman’s midfield.

"Brilliant" Sudakov is on the rise

We’ve seen Curtis Jones thrive and it feels inevitable that Harvey Elliott will enjoy similar success in Slot’s system, which features the No 10 role that Klopp’s setup lacked in the face of several players who are best in the more advanced position.

Sudakov could prove to be better than both academy graduates, highlighting the levels he’s capable of reaching.

Scoring eight goals and assisting a further three for Shakhtar so far this season, Sudakov also offers key versatility as a player who is capable of playing off the left-hand side, as well as in a deeper midfield role. Dubbed a “brilliant midfielder” by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig earlier this year, there’s no doubt that the 22-year-old is one to watch.

For £50m, Liverpool could get themselves a bargain in today’s market, especially if Sudakov continues his recent rise to become one of the most talented players in his position.

Liverpool keeping tabs on record-breaking teenager in potential £12.5m deal

Liverpool are interested in completing the signing of a record-breaking youngster in a potential £12.5m deal, according to Sky Sports journalist Patrick Berger.

Latest Liverpool news

After a quiet summer transfer window, Reds supporters will be hoping to see fresh faces come in soon, whether that be in January or next summer. Benfica midfielder Orkun Kokcu has been mentioned as a possible target, with the 23-year-old having a reported £126m release clause in his current deal, highlighting how much he is valued by the Portuguese giants.

Arne Slot could still be looking for another player in the middle of the park, having missed out on Martin Zubimendi during the summer, and the Turk could be an ideal alternative to the Real Sociedad ace, presuming the Reds can whittle down that release clause.

Benfica midfielderOrkun Kokcu.

Meanwhile, long-term replacements for Virgil van Dijk will need to keep being looked at, even though the Dutchman still has plenty of years left in him, and Vitor Reis has been linked with a move to Liverpool. The 18-year-old Palmeiras centre-back is considered a big talent, with his own release clause believed to be a whopping £84m.

Amid concerns over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Anfield, Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries has also emerged as a rumoured target for the Reds, with his current employers reportedly concerned that a deal has already been struck.

Liverpool keen on signing record-breaking teenager

Writing on X on Monday, Sky Germany’s Berger claimed that Liverpool are among the clubs interested in signing Serbia teenager Andrija Maksimovic, potentially getting the attacking midfielder for as little as £12.5m.

Maksimovic made history last weekend, as Berger mentions in his update, becoming the youngest player in Serbia’s history, making his debut in his country’s 2-0 win at home to Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League. Still just 17, the teenage attacking midfielder looks to have an enormous future in the game, having already been linked with a switch to Newcastle United in recent weeks.

Away from his record-breaking feats for Serbia at senior level, Maksimovic also scored an incredible 29 goals in just 26 appearances for Red Star Belgrade’s Under-17s, as well as nine in 29 outings for dual side Graficar Beograd.

'Our batting is a concern,' admits Mahmudullah after Bangladesh suffer Scotland slip-up

Captain says Mushfiqur Rahim dismissal was “turning point” as small chase got out of hand

Nafees: Bangladesh never looked like they were in the game while chasing

Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah, frustrated with their shock six-run defeat at the hands of Scotland, said that they failed to bat aggressively throughout the 141-run chase. However, he still believed that Bangladesh could turn around from this messy start, particularly if they reviewed where they went wrong.”I am very much frustrated,” Mahmudullah said. “Our batting is a concern. We have to bat better. We have to play aggressive cricket, regardless of the situation. We have a deep batting line-up, with Mohammad Saifuddin at No. 9. We may need to think over some changes tomorrow.”We didn’t deliberately bat slowly. We couldn’t hit those boundaries. We have to bat better next time. A lot of things will come up since we lost the game. I think we didn’t play well today, but we are a good T20 team. We have the capability. When we play our best cricket, we can win games.”Related

Mahmudullah said that the chase never took off, and when wickets fell at crucial points, it kept raising the asking run rate even though they were chasing a moderate total on a flat pitch.”We couldn’t make runs in the Powerplay. You need to start well chasing 140. I think Mushfiqur [Rahim] and Shakib [Al Hasan] made some recovery but in the middle [overs], we didn’t bat well even though it was on a good wicket. We made more mistakes.”I think some big overs off the spinners would have raised our run rate, but probably losing wickets in the middle overs prevented us from getting those big overs. The asking run-rate, as a result, went up.”Mahmudullah said that he, Afif Hossain and Nurul Hasan, tasked with providing quick runs in the second half of the innings, couldn’t quite get going, but also pointed out how Mushfiqur’s dismissal after making 38 off 36 balls turned the game in Scotland’s favour.”I think Mushy’s wicket was the turning point,” he said. “He was batting well today. A set batter has to stay. Maybe I didn’t bat according to the situation. We should think better as a batting unit.”If Afif and I, or Sohan [Nurul] and I could have carried a little longer, it would have brought us closer. But credit goes to their bowlers. They executed well. We made silly mistakes, and paid for it.”But Mahmudullah didn’t blame his bowlers who leaked 85 runs in the last eight overs, rather praising them for getting the six early wickets.”I think the bowlers were on the right track. We had them at 53 for 6, but then they had a good partnership. They played better cricket than us. We were just not good enough tonight. Mahedi [Hasan] and Shakib bowled very well. Maybe we could have bowled better in the death overs, but our batting was really bad. If we don’t take stock of it, it won’t get us anything good.”

Manchester United now considering buying back player they sold for just £5m

Manchester United could be set for a transfer U-turn as INEOS eye the signing of a player the club have just recently sold, according to a new report. Given the Red Devils’ poor start to the campaign, United may be set for a busy January as they continue to be linked with new recruits who they hope will improve the team.

Man Utd believe they'll sign £10m-a-year target even if they sack Ten Hag

Man Utd have their eye on a player they would like to sign whether Ten Hag stays or leaves.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 9, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

United brought in five new players during the summer, but given that there were a lot of departures, there could be room to add one or two more when January arrives. One area they may address is goalkeeper, as while Andre Onana has done very well this season, there is little serious competition behind him.

United have their eye on Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle, as scouts have taken in performances of the shot stopper and left impressed with what they have seen. At 22 years old, United see him as someone who can provide cover and competition for Onana.

Another area that may need addressing at Old Trafford is at left-back, as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia continue to recover from injuries, which means Diogo Dalot has been heavily relied upon to fill the void. So, United are considering their options, and they have an interested in signing Ben Chilwell from Chelsea. The Red Devils have made him their top target, and they believe they can sign him when January arrives.

However, Chilwell is not the only left-back that United are looking at, as they are also considering re-signing a former player.

INEOS may now buy back £5m Alvaro Carreras

According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United are closely monitoring Benfica defender Alvaro Carreras, while Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are also keen.

The 21-year-old is well known at Old Trafford, as he spent four years with the Premier League side between 2020 and 2024. Carreras joined United from Real Madrid’s youth team but failed to make a first team appearance, spending time on loan at Preston, Granada and Benfica.

The left-back joined the Portuguese side on loan in January this year, and then that deal was made into a permanent switch, as Benfica paid 6 million euros, which is around £5 million. The 21-year-old has cemented himself in the Benfica team, appearing nine times in all competitions this season.

That hasn’t gone unnoticed, as his performances have caught the eye of the three named teams, with all three sending scouts to watch him in action. United have a buyback clause in his deal that saw him join Benfica, and they will be able to activate that to try and beat Barça and Madrid should they wish to do so, though there seems to be an element of chaos in buying back a player you just sold to fix a position with two injury-prone players.

'He made a mistake and I told him that!' – Virgil van Dijk delivers scathing review of referee Stuart Attwell for one HUGE decision that went against Liverpool in shock Carabao Cup loss to Tottenham

Virgil van Dijk has claimed referee Stuart Attwell made a 'mistake' not sending off Lucas Bergvall during Liverpool's 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool were handed a shock loss at the hands of Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final in north London after Lucas Bergvall scored an 86th-minute winner. However, the 18-year-old lunged in on Kostas Tsimikas just before the goal and was not sent off by referee Attwell. While the Liverpool left-back was off the field, Bergvall scored on the counter, with the incident drawing a lot of criticism from Van Dijk.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Van Dijk said: "I think it was quite obvious that it was going to be a second yellow.

"Obviously I think it was pretty clear [from what I said to the referee]. It was no coincidence that a minute later he scores the winner.

"He [Attwell] made a mistake in my opinion and I told him that. It was quite obvious I think and everyone on the sidelines knew it was supposed to be a yellow.

"There is a linesman there, a fourth official. There is VAR there and a referee, and he doesn't get a second yellow. I'm not saying this is the reason we lost today, but it was a big moment in the game."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool boss Arne Slot also criticised the refereeing decision that will now force the Reds to try go on a huge offensive in the second leg. The Dutchman told Sky Sports: "It was a good goal, let that be clear, Bergvall stayed calm and finished it off.

"But I don’t think you are interested in that but the moment before [the foul]. I think I saw Ange was sitting here and Spurs weren’t happy with a few decisions on Sunday. People say the decisions even up – I don’t believe that. They may have been unlucky and today the decisions went for them. It was unlucky for us because I didn’t think we were ever going to lose this game.

"Very unlucky, far from ideal starting position. They have a good team and have some players coming back for the second leg but if I lose I prefer to lose with a second leg to come."

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou also provided his thoughts on the Bergvall-Tsimikas incident and told Sky Sports: "Now we've been told consistently in the last few weeks, because I've been screaming about it from the sidelines, because a lot of teams have got away with a lot of fouls with us, without bookings, because the referee plays advantage.

"We've been told consistently that if we play advantage, as long as it's not a cynical foul, then the player does not get cautioned. So that's been relayed to us on a weekly basis. Because we feel like that's been happening."
