  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Keane was spotted angrily confronting a supporter after abuse was allegedly hurled in the pundit's direction at Portman Road on Sunday. Keane can also be heard saying "I'll wait for you in the car park" in a video circulating on social media as tensions rose after the 1-1 draw. An Ipswich fan, Neil Finbow, has now claimed to be the target of Keane's fury and has taken to social media to reveal exactly what happened between the pair.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Keane was known for his hot temper and aggression during his trophy-laden playing career with Manchester United before moving into management. The former midfielder spent 18 months in charge of Ipswich but was sacked in 2011 with the team down in 21st place in the Championship, something that certainly has not been forgotten at Portman Road, it seems.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Finbow posted on Facebook: "New claim to fame just been offered out into the carpark by Roy Keane after a few choice words even Jamie Redknapp had to come over to get him away just ya average Sunday evening out." Finbow also offered some insight into what he said to Keane: "Yep did remind him he set us back five years and ruined our football club – I also mentioned he wasn't fit to step foot anywhere near our ground. Oh and I mentioned about him walking out on a World Cup and breaking [Alf-Inge] Halaand's leg and putting it in his autobiography I hate the bloke and that's been boiling up since he got sacked all those years ago."

Chelsea women's player ratings vs Man City: Sonia Bompastor’s side go top of WSL thanks to Maika Hamano masterclass as Mayra Ramirez's stunning start to the season continues

The Blues are searching for a sixth successive league title and their chances of lifting it were boosted on Saturday by a huge win at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea made a serious statement in the Women's Super League title race on Saturday as they beat Manchester City 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to snatch top spot. It was a cagey affair from which a winner was extremely tough to call for the most part – until two goals in four second half minutes allowed the Blues to secure a huge victory in their bid to claim a sixth successive league title, and a first under new head coach Sonia Bompastor.

Until that deadlock was broken, it was Chelsea who enjoyed the better of the play in the capital, but City who were on the receiving end of the bigger chances. Those were thanks to errors from the Blues and they were presented to the visitors' most dangerous player, too, but Khadija Shaw, last season's Golden Boot winner, was surprisingly wasteful to leave the game incredibly even as the latter stages approached.

It was as the final 15 minutes began that Chelsea then grabbed this match with both hands. Maika Hamano released Mayra Ramirez who, after brushing off Alanna Kennedy with ease, finished brilliantly to break the deadlock, and then Lucy Bronze's intelligent pass to Guro Reiten became a deserved assist when the winger curled her shot around Alex Greenwood and into the bottom corner. It means these two title rivals swap positions in the WSL table and Chelsea, who still have a game in hand, hold a two-point lead over the Cityzens. However, with it only mid-November, there's plenty of football to be played before the destination of this trophy is decided.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Hannah Hampton (6/10):

Guilty of some inaccurate distribution but kept City out.

    Lucy Bronze (7/10):

An asset for her team both defensively and going forward. Great assist for Reiten.

    Millie Bright (6/10):

A little too loose in possession but ultimately helped her team keep a vital clean sheet.

    Nathalie Bjorn (5/10):

Struggled to contain Shaw at times and walked a thin line on a booking.

    Sandy Baltimore (7/10):

This was her toughest test this season in an unnatural position and though she made some mistakes, she also did some great defending.

  • Midfield

    Sjoeke Nusken (7/10):

Covered plenty of ground and helped restrict City in their build-up play.

    Erin Cuthbert (7/10):

Aggressive and front-footed to win the ball back plenty.

    Maika Hamano (8/10):

Always looked the most likely to create something and it was indeed her who set Ramirez through to score.

    Attack

    Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (6/10):

Energetic and direct to always cause City problems, albeit without a standout end product.

    Mayra Ramirez (8/10):

Things didn't always come off for her but she kept City on their toes with her positivity and got the goal her efforts deserved.

    Guro Reiten (7/10):

Struggled to get involved for large spells but took her big chance when it came.

  • Subs & Manager

    Ashley Lawrence (N/A):

On in the closing stages to help Chelsea see the game out.

    Aggie Beever-Jones (N/A):

    Introduced as stoppage time began.

    Sonia Bompastor (7/10):

Chelsea haven't been great in the latter stages of games this season but that trend was reversed completely on the biggest occasion on Saturday, which will surely please Bompastor. The coach freshened things up from midweek Champions League action and, with minimal substitutions, trusted her XI to get the job done.

Ominous signs for South Africa after England win ugly

Sweltering conditions in Paarl point to another high-scoring game on Sunday

Matt Roller28-Nov-2020Their bowling lacked bite, their much-heralded top three contributed 26 runs between them, and their captain was scathing about what he saw as a “pretty average” performance. And yet England still won the first T20I by five wickets with four balls to spare – ominous signs for South Africa, as they stumble towards next year’s T20 World Cup.In football, managers and pundits often suggest victories like England’s demonstrate that the best teams find a way to win without playing at their usual level, and that seems to fit with this side. “When you win games like that and you’ve a lot [of improvement] to make up in all three facets [of the game] you can be pleased,” said Eoin Morgan.Since the start of the 2018-19 winter, England have won six and drawn one of their seven T20I series despite rarely – if ever – fielding their strongest XI. They are well on course for a seventh win in eight, and will hope to put the series to bed in Sunday afternoon’s game at Paarl to give them the chance to be creative in the final game. For South Africa, there were positive signs in defeat but the same old problems remained. An over-reliance on Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis to score the bulk of the runs? Check. An attack which came up short at key moments? Check. An imbalanced playing XI which meant a back-up wicketkeeper was the sixth bowling option? Check. The biggest positive will have been George Linde’s impressive debut, which saw him take 2 for 20 after whacking two boundaries at the death. Most pleasingly, he demonstrated his ability to bowl at both left- and right-handers, not only dismissing Jason Roy with his second ball but also keeping Dawid Malan tied down despite turning the ball into his pads.Jason Roy looks on in training•Getty Images(last five completed matches, most recent first)
South Africa LLWLL
England WLWWLTabraiz Shamsi has been a lock in South Africa’s T20I side for the best part of three years now, but the jury is out as to whether he is a genuine match-winner or simply keeping Imran Tahir’s spot warm before the T20 World Cup. Shamsi showed in the series against England and Australia in February that he is a canny operator with good variations, but was only afforded three overs in Friday’s series opener as Jonny Bairstow took a particular liking to him. With England creating left-right partnerships throughout their batting order, he will need to find a way to keep the right-handers quiet – perhaps by using his googly more.It has been a difficult nine months for Jason Roy in an England shirt – with injuries limiting him to only seven white-ball innings for them in that time, his highest score was his 24 against Ireland back in July. Roy spoke before this series about feeling refreshed and re-energised after withdrawing from the IPL to spend time with his young family, but managed a second-baller on Friday night. He has a huge amount of credit in the bank, and has fifties in three of his last six T20I innings, but can expect South Africa to target him with Linde’s left-arm spin early on again. The two Covid-positive players in South Africa’s enlarged squad may be able to rejoin the group relatively soon, but the team doctor said on Thursday that they were highly unlikely to play a part in the series. Anrich Nortje was left out, perhaps with a focus on transformation targets, in the series opener, but looks set to replace Beuran Hendricks after his nightmare final over. That will mean a batting reshuffle, with Reeza Hendricks the most likely player to come in, possibly at the expense of Pite van Biljon. If Quinton de Kock decides he needs another bowling option in the top six, Jon-Jon Smuts could be handed another chance.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (capt, wk), 2 Reeza Hendricks, 3 Temba Bavuma, 4 Faf du Plessis, 5 Rassie van der Dussen, 6 Heinrich Klaasen/Jon-Jon Smuts, 7 George Linde, 8 Lungi Ngidi, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Tabraiz ShamsiEngland are unlikely to rip up their latest blueprint immediately, though could make changes for the third game if the batting line-up fails to click again. Instead, the most likely change would involve Mark Wood replacing Tom Curran to add pace to the bowling attack.England (possible): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Jonny Bairstow, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Eoin Morgan (capt), 7 Sam Curran, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Mark WoodThe pitch at Boland Park in Paarl tends to be flat, and it is set to be a 30-degrees scorcher on Sunday. The average score batting first in all T20s there since the start of the 2018-19 Mzansi Super League is 166, but there is a strong chasing bias: the team batting second has won nine out of the last 13 games there. In the same timeframe, Shamsi is the leading wicket-taker on the ground, with 14 wickets. In terms of atmosphere, the ground is one of the best in the country, so the absence of a crowd will be keenly felt.Stats and trivia Dawid Malan has not hit a fifty in any of his last three innings – it is a measure of his consistency in T20I cricket that this is the first such streak in his 17-match career in the format.Faf du Plessis is 97 runs short of the 1500-run mark for South Africa in T20Is. He would be the third man to get there after JP Duminy and AB de Villiers. Jos Buttler is 38 short of the same landmark.Jonny Bairstow’s half-century was his first at No. 4 in T20I cricket, and means he has now hit at least one fifty in every position from opener down to No. 5.England have not played a full men’s international at Boland Park before. They played an intra-squad warm-up in Paarl on Monday, and against a South Africa A side in a T20 friendly on their 2016 tour.”It’s always very special. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve done it. The time away from the game really made me miss the game of cricket again so to come back and play for the Proteas is just as special as it always has been, especially against a quality team like in England.”
“I would imagine the more time we spend together and the more we play, the more we will get used to roles that we play and start to gel like we have in 50-over cricket. It is not doom and gloom but hopefully we will improve and progress in the next couple of games.”
Eoin Morgan thinks England have plenty of room for improvement

'Not a future predictor for success' – With gold medal in bank, Emma Hayes to give Jaedyn Shaw, Alyssa Thompson and USWNT youth opportunities vs Iceland

While this camp features stars that made up the Olympic team, the U.S. coach will also look to younger players to break through

As fun as this summer was, the calendars have now turned to fall. And with fall comes fresh beginnings, particularly for the U.S. women's national team. It was mission accomplished with a gold-medal performance at the Summer Olympics, and it all gets going again this week, when Emma Hayes' squad takes on Iceland in a pair of friendlies.

They're the first games since the USWNT won gold, the first chance to turn the page. Hayes, in particular, has been vocal about the new challenges. She's looking forward to them.

"The Olympics form a great basis and they're a great foundation for us," Hayes said, "but it's not a future predictor for success."

Hayes has to adjust the player pool by introducing a new generation over the next three years. She has to figure out which veterans have staying power and which are transitional. She has to take this chance to build the team in her image after speeding through her first summer.

And that leads us back to this camp, the first glimpse into how Hayes will build this team toward the 2027 World Cup. The USWNT play Iceland Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Austin, Texas, and then again Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in Nashville. What to expect from the USWNT in these two games, with a third against Argentina to follow? GOAL takes a look.

Getty Images SportMeet the newcomers

There are plenty of familiar faces in this camp – 18 of them, to be precise, all returning from the Olympics. A few more have caps, too.

There are six uncapped players in the squad, though, and, based on Hayes pre-camp comments, there are some debuts coming.

Hal Hershfelt and Emily Sams are back with the team after serving as Olympic alternates this summer. Sams actually is the subject of a wild trivia fact: she won an Olympic gold medal before earning her first cap, having sat on the bench twice in France this past summer. Hershfelt, meanwhile, has been a breakout star after being drafted by the Washington Spirit earlier this year.

Eva Gaetino of PSG is back in camp, having been involved at the SheBelieves Cup despite not earning a cap. Louisville City rookie Emma Sears is in as a NWSL breakout star, despite going with the last pick in the second round of this year's draft. Alyssa Malonson earns her first call-up in her third NWSL season with Bay FC, while Yazmeen Ryan, also a four-year NWSL veteran, has arrived with four goals and four assists for Gotham FC.

What will Hayes make of the newcomers? How many minutes will each get, and how will that experience set them up for USWNT futures? While this camp obviously features the stars that made up the Olympic team, there are plenty of reasons to keep an eye on players that could break through.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMoultrie and Thompson's big chance

Olivia Moultrie and Alyssa Thompson aren't newcomers. Thompson already has a World Cup under her belt, while Moultrie has been a professional for four full seasons. Because of those facts, it's easy to forget that they're both still teenagers.

Both are immensely talented and both could be legitimate stars for this team in the years to come. The teens have had brief runs with this USWNT group, but, over the next three years, they'll slowly put their own stamp on things.

Thompson, of course, did a bit of that in the run up to the 2023 World Cup but, with the return of Mallory Swanson, was squeezed out of the attack. The Angel City star will have more chances, though. She's too talented not to.

Same for Moultrie, who has scored twice in her four USWNT appearances. The Portland Thorns starlet has gone from history-maker to legitimate pro, and soon will be a legitimate USWNT midfielder.

Because of their youth, this could take some time, especially considering the veterans they're up against in their respective positions. It will certainly be a process, one that will really begin under Hayes' tutelage this month.

AFPTwo shots of espresso, not three

This summer, the trio of Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman captivated fans all over the world. It's a trio that has already gone down in USWNT lore and, after much debate, they gave themselves a nickname: Triple Espresso.

Due to a back injury sustained in the NWSL season, though, Rodman won't be involved this month, leaving her two attacking teammates as Double Espresso. Rodman will be missed, but they'll be just fine.

Smith and Swanson are, of course, world-class, and they have some great players around them eager to step into Rodman's spot.

Shaw is back and healthy. Lynn Williams has plenty of experience to bring to this group. We've already touched on Thompson, Sears and Ryan, all of whom will be eager for their opportunities to shine.

It would have been fun to see how Triple Espresso continued to evolve this window, but it wasn't to be. It's safe to say there will be plenty more shots down the line, though, as the U.S. looks to build around an elite attacking group.

Getty ImagesShaw's ready to go

It was the only real disappointment of this summer's Olympic run. All spring, it seemed as if it would be the Summer of Shaw. Injuries precluded that. She got her medal in the end, but the young San Diego wave star didn't have the impact many had anticipated.

The 20-year-old attacker isn't going anywhere, though. In fact, she's probably going to get better.

Back in the team now after recently returning in the NWSL, it'll be interesting to see Shaw slots in this camp. She started just one of her three appearances under the new coach, but has played just 38 USWNT minutes since July. We still don't really have an idea of what Hayes will do with a healthy, fit and confident Shaw.

Does she start as a No. 10 behind? Can she take Rodman's spot out wide this camp and then go from there? When and where will she push for a starting spot?

With Rodman out, we won't get all of the answers this camp, but we may get a few.

Deal close: Man Utd hopeful of signing "highly-rated" gem after offer made

As Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to make his mark on the current Manchester United, the Red Devils have reportedly tabled an offer to sign a possible future star for Erik ten Hag this summer.

Man Utd transfer news

It's clear that there's plenty of work to do at Old Trafford this summer, with even Ten Hag's future still uncertain. The Dutchman saved an otherwise disappointing season by winning the FA Cup against rivals Manchester City, but that hasn't stopped the links with the likes of Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel from coming, as Ratcliffe weighs up his next move.

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel

Away from the dugout, the headlines have been centred around United's search to replace the departing Raphael Varane. The Frenchman confirmed his exit at the end of the season and those at Old Trafford have been linked with names such as Antonio Silva and Ousmane Diomande ever since. Two young defenders, it seems as though Ratcliffe's reported new transfer policy is already underway.

That policy is seemingly set to continue in pursuit of another young talent too. According to The Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are "hopeful" of winning the race to sign James Overy after tabling an offer to the young right-back. Offering the 17-year-old a scholarship to join their famous academy, United are attempting to complete a deal that will see Ten Hag land a future star in the coming months, with an agreement and transfer thought to be close.

INEOS eyeing Man Utd swoop for "crazy" Luke Shaw clone

He had a “hell of a game” vs United this season…

ByJoe Nuttall Jun 2, 2024

If this season had any positive at Old Trafford, it was the progression of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, who went from the academy all the way to first-team standouts in a path that Overy could now follow if he completes a move to Manchester United this summer.

"Highly-rated" Overy can follow Mainoo path

With or without great success on the pitch, the one constant at United has been how they utilise their academy. Whether it be Wayne Rooney or Paul Scholes in the past or now Mainoo, Garnacho and Marcus Rashford, the Red Devils have historically turned towards their own when looking for options. And now Overy can look to take a similar path from the academy to the first team.

The youngster initially caught the eye of Premier League sides in a friendly for Perth Glory against West Ham United last summer and it seems as though that interest has only increased since he's arrived in England to play for Newton Abbot Spurs' first-team.

He's earned plenty of praise during the last year too, including from ExWHUEmployee, who told The West Ham Way when speaking about the Hammers' potential move last year: "I have been told by my sources that James Overy is currently on trial with our Academy. He is a highly rated right-back who impressed when playing against us for Perth Glory during our pre-season tour."

With the London club failing to seal their deal to sign Overy, however, United have reportedly swooped in to potentially welcome Overy in the coming months.

Matthew Mott: Kim Garth exit could push Ireland towards professionalism

The Ireland allrounder has opted for a future in Australia and could play for them when she qualifies

Daniel Brettig25-Jun-2020Australia’s coach Matthew Mott believes Kim Garth’s switch from Ireland to a deal with Victoria should be the spur to help usher in women’s professional contracts for Irish cricket to stave off the risk of losing a generation of female talent to wealthier nations. As a former member of Ireland’s coaching staff during the 2015 men’s ODI World Cup, Mott has plenty of strong relationships on both sides of the equation, and while backing Garth’s decision to pursue a fully professional future, agreed that there was growing danger that emerging nations could have their best players poached by richer set-ups, not least Australia given the pre-eminence of the WBBL as the best domestic T20 event in the world. While the Covid-19 pandemic has made life difficult for all cricket administrators, Mott was hopeful that the Garth episode would help accelerate Ireland’s move to a more fully-resourced and funded program for the women’s team, allowing players to make the game their careers without needing to venture overseas in this manner.ALSO READ: Kim Garth leaves Irish cricket for future in Australia”It’s incredibly important and maybe this is a good thing for Irish cricket – I think it might help fast-track some stuff for their professionalisation,” Mott said. “They surely don’t want to be losing good players and I know that happened in the men’s game. A number of the best Irish players were going to play for England and one ended up captaining England, so I think they’ve certainly improved in that area.”They’re building their momentum and they need to be playing against good teams and getting better all the time. It’s a difficult thing. I’m very close mates with Ed Joyce who’s the Irish coach, so I was aware of it some time ago and I think it’s disappointing personally for Irish cricket, they’ve put a lot of work in over the last two years, but obviously a cricketer’s ambitions are very important and she’s a very ambitious young player and I think it’s the best thing for her cricket at the moment. “You’ve got to back that decision, it’s a really gutsy decision to go to the other side of the world and try to follow your dream. We’ve got a great structure here and it’s very attractive for her and she knows our system quite well having been here for a few years as well. I am disappointed for Irish cricket, having coached there myself and know how difficult it is to hold on to good players, but at the end of the day she’s got to do the best thing by her and it will be really interesting to see how far she can take her cricket.”The links between Cricket Australia and Cricket Ireland are strong and multi-faceted. During the Covid-19 lockdown period, Mott and the Australia captain Meg Lanning were involved in a series of video seminars geared at aiding the Irish game, while there is also a considerable shared heritage between the two nations dating back deep into the 19th century.”They just love their cricket and that’s the thing that struck me in my time with the Irish team, just how passionate they are about the game and we just want to see them do well,” Mott said. “Kim made a decision off her own bat, there was certainly nothing from CA to try to entice her over here, but that being said we’ll always welcome good cricketers into our setup.”Garth is expected to seek permanent residency in Australia and Mott said that if she became eligible for the national side she would be treated like any other player. “I think she’s a very talented player, and when you look at the Irish team, whenever we come up against them, she’s the first name talked about If she comes over and does well, our selectors have shown they will reward performance and she’s got every opportunity that everyone else has. She’ll be a welcome player in our domestic format.”Casting his mind back to last week’s announcement of 40 redundancies across CA, Mott said that the women’s national team had been fortunate in not losing much in the way of staff or resources, even as the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane has its operations scaled back in favour of players spending more time with their own state squads.Kim Garth in action for the Perth Scorchers•Getty Images

“First and foremost, it was a really difficult week for anyone in Australian cricket,” he said. “I think we’re all hurting, we’ve seen a number of really good staff members leave our workplace, and a lot of those are life-long friendships that will still be there and hopefully one day when cricket really gets strong again and we get out of this crisis, those people are welcomed back.”In terms of the women’s program we’ve been quite fortunate, we’ve taken some hits but we’ve also just hibernated a couple of programs and hopefully when we come out of this we can re-engage. We’ve got to make better use of the resources we’ve got, our programs are going to have to be really in-sync and on-point, so we’re looking at it as a real challenge.”Mott admitted he was more concerned for cricket’s smaller nations, and budgetary decisions currently being made that might push back the development of the women’s game outside of Australia. “I worry for some of the developing nations to be honest,” he said. “For places like Sri Lanka that aren’t as established in their women’s programs, and I just hope they can hold on through this period.”The ICC are definitely trying to champion some of the developing countries to be stronger and that’s something all the big nations need to be aware of. We want a global game, we want a world game and where we can help out some of the developing countries whether it’s with our human resources or just helping in tournament play and giving them some key messages.”Having strong domestic competitions, the next frontier is India, we’d love to see an IPL get up and running and giving our players a chance to play in different conditions and experience different cultures as well.”

Wanderers' season has arguably petered out a little in recent weeks, sitting 11th in the Premier League table and not winning in their last four matches in the competition. It has still been a positive campaign overall, with O'Neil impressing after a tumultuous summer, but further signings will be needed in the next transfer window.

One player who has been linked with a move to Wolves at the end of the season is Mohamed Amoura, with the Union SG attacker scoring twice in the Europa League this season. The Algerian could link up effectively with Matheus Cunha if he completes a move to Molineux, having been hailed for his "superb run of form" and for being "incredibly prolific" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

It looks as though attackers could be high up on O'Neil's list of transfer targets in the summer, with Southampton striker Che Adams also seen as a potential addition. It would be third-time lucky for Wanderers, who have seen him as a strong option for some time, and he could arrive on the cheap because he is out of contract at St Mary's this summer.

Away from possible attacking additions, there could also be new faces who arrive in midfield, and Leicester City ace Wilfred Ndidi is believed to be wanted at Wolves, having impressed for the Foxes in the Championship this season, but no doubt wanting to be back playing Premier League football.

Barcelona youngster Ansu Fati is another example of a talented player being linked with Wolves, even though he has struggled to make an impression on loan at Brighton this season, only starting three league games and scoring twice in 17 appearances in the competition overall.

Gary O'Neil suffers Wolves transfer blow

According to a new update from DZ Foot [via Sport Witness], West Ham have made a concrete bid for Amoura, acting as a setback for O'Neil and Wolves.

The Hammers are thought to be in the "best position" to snap up the 23-year-old, offering €15m (£12.7m) for his signature, which is admittedly €5m (£4.2m) short of their valuation. His club are expected to try and cash in on him this year however, after increasing his valuation "tenfold in one season".

This is an undoubted blow for Wolves, considering West Ham appear to be the front-runners to sign Amoura ahead of next season, and it is now a case of whether Wanderers can respond by offering a similar amount.

A tally of 21 goals in just 37 Union appearances speaks volumes about his productivity in front of goal, and he has also netted six times in 22 caps for Algeria, showing that he can shine at international level.

Wolves will hope that there is another twist in the saga, but for now, it does look as though Amoura is most likely to be heading to their Premier League rivals, which would be a tough one to take.
