Hungary star Szoboszlai was seen in tears after their Nations League clash with the Netherlands was halted due to a medical emergency on the Hungarian bench. Videos appeared to show the team's staff reacting quickly to another person on the bench losing consciousness, and they formed a protective ring as treatment was administered. Medical staff rushed to the stricken individual's aid and the game was paused as they were attended to after seven minutes of the game. It has since been reported Hungary coach Adam Szalai is the individual involved.

Neither team have made any comment on the situation, but Szoboszlai's emotional reaction, and the speed and intensity of the rush to aid the individual, points to a distressing situation. Hungarian Football Xtra, on X, claimed that Szalai was the staff member involved, and they quote MLSZ, a Hungarian news outlet, who say he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Amsterdam. He is said to be stable.

Rangers register interest in new move to sign £7.5k-p/w forward for Clement

Rangers are believed to be "readying a new move" to sign an attacking player this summer and have registered their interest, according to a fresh claim from journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Rangers transfer news

The summer transfer window has already been a busy one at Ibrox, with numerous players brought in, from Jefte at left-back to Mohamed Diomande in midfield, who has joined on a permanent basis after being on loan last season. More business is expected, however, both in terms of incomings and outgoings.

The future of Rangers legend James Tavernier has been a big talking point of late, and it does feel increasingly as though he could seal a summer move away from the club where he has provided so much quality down the years. A move to Trabzonspor has been mooted, as well as a reunion with Steven Gerrard at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

Glasgow Rangers defender James Tavernier.

Meanwhile, Philippe Clement is thought to be ready to reignite his interest in striker Tyrese Campbell this summer, with the 24-year-old now a free agent after departing Stoke City at the end of last season.

It could be that Diomande isn't the only former loanee who joins Rangers permanently in the coming weeks, with work still being done to try and bring in Abdallah Sima, too. The 23-year-old scored 11 goals in just 17 starts in the Scottish Premiership in 2023/24, and his current club Brighton could be willing to sell him for good.

Rangers prepare "new move" for 23 y/o forward

According to O'Rourke on X, Rangers are "readying a new move" for Plymouth Argyle striker Morgan Whittaker, having shown plenty of interest in him last year.

In his story for Football Insider, O'Rourke claims that Rangers have appeared to make contact by registering their interest in a deal this summer.

Whittaker could be such an eye-catching addition to Clement's squad ahead of next season, as the Rangers boss looks to add more firepower to his attack. The 23-year-old Englishman could certainly bring that with him, considering his tally of 19 goals for Plymouth in the Championship last term was more than any Gers player managed in the league, with Tavernier topping the charts with 17.

The £7,500-week ace has also been lauded by Plymouth's director football, Neil Dewsnip, who heaped praise on the excellent campaign he recently enjoyed, saying: "Well done Morgan Whittaker. He has excited us here throughout the season. He has scored some amazing goals and to get selected in that team with the quality that exits in this league is a major achievement. He should be really proud of himself."

ByRoss Kilvington Jul 21, 2024

Having a relentless goalscorer next season could go a long way towards helping Rangers go one better in the league and further close the gap on Celtic, and Whittaker could be that man, coming in as a star player from the off, but also representing the long-term future.

The longest unbeaten runs in English top-flight football

Avoiding defeat in football is one of the many fundamentals of the game, but doing it over a long period of time requires a large amount of luck, consistency, grit and determination. Five of the longest unbeaten runs in English top-flight football have come in the Premier League era, but what teams feature on the all-time list?

There have been ten occasions where teams have hit the 30-game milestone for matches unbeaten, which has been something of a stumbling block over the years. For this list, we've ranked the longest unbeaten runs since records began. Only league games count, and given there has only ever been one modern-day unbeaten season, it is perhaps no surprise that few have managed to even come close.

The Clarets cemented themselves in the history books of English football when they were crowned champions of England for the first time in March 1921, following a 30-game unbeaten run.

Under boss John Haworth, who spent 14 years in charge of the club, Burnley lost their first three games of the 1920/21 season, before going 30 games without losing and establishing a record that lasted 83 years – it was the first time a top-flight English football club had gone that many games unbeaten.

A special plaque commemorating the iconic Clarets record was restored in 2021 and displayed in a new lounge at Turf Moor, Burnley’s stadium.

Following a third-place finish the previous season – which culminated with a 6-1 win over Arsenal at Elland Road – Leeds United stormed into the 1973/74 campaign thirsty for success.

Don Revie’s side were reeling from bitter cup final defeats. The first: a shocking FA Cup final defeat to Second Division Sunderland. The second: another 1-0 defeat to Milan in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, refereed by Christos Michas, who was later banned for match-fixing.

However, both defeats failed to rattle Revie’s men, as they started the next campaign by going 29 games unbeaten, winning 19 and drawing 10, in addition to their late-season win over Arsenal the previous term.

Their 30-game unbeaten run came to an end after a 3-2 defeat to Stoke City, but Leeds would go on to lift their second English League title finishing on 62 points.

It was Revie’s last season in charge of Leeds, as he accepted the England job where he remained largely unsuccessful for three years, before managing the United Arab Emirates.

Arsenal were a force to be reckoned with in the early 2000s, with star names like Thierry Henry, Sol Campbell, Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp all at the top of their game.

Ending as runners-up to Manchester United the previous season and losing out to Liverpool in the 2001 FA Cup final spurred Arsene Wenger’s men on to have a glorious next few years. This period began with their 30-game unbeaten streak during the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

It was a hugely competitive league at the time, with Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester United all on the hunt for Premier League success, but Arsenal experienced just three defeats during the campaign.

In their last 21 fixtures, the Gunners went unbeaten – winning each of their last 13 – and Sylvain Wiltord’s goal at Old Trafford added the League title to their trophy cabinet, following their FA Cup success at Wembley over Chelsea four days prior.

Surprisingly, Pep Guardiola’s side feature just once on the list of the longest unbeaten runs in top-flight English football, but Manchester City fans will remember the 2017/18 season for entirely different reasons.

Gabriel Jesus’ 94th-minute winner at Southampton in May 2018 secured the Premier League champions 100 points, a feat no team had ever achieved before.

The centurions were formidable during the entire campaign, winning 32 games and losing just two – they clocked exactly 50 points at home and 50 points away, scoring 106 goals, which averages out at 2.79 per game.

Heavy investment in the summer with the additions of Bernardo Silva, Ederson and Kyle Walker, and a club record £57m on Aymeric Laporte in January, meant Pep Guardiola had a plethora of talent at his disposal.

Their 30-game unbeaten run started with a 3-1 win at home to Hull City in April 2017 and ended in a Premier League classic: a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield in January 2018.

City then went on to lift their third Premier League title at the end of the season.

Liverpool achieved unprecedented success throughout the 1970s and 80s. They were dominant in all areas of the pitch, developing football icons such as Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and John Barnes along the way.

With Dalglish at the helm, the Reds needed to refocus ahead of the 1987/88 season after winning the club’s first-ever league and FA Cup double.

Top goalscorer Ian Rush had also been sold to Juventus for a then-British-record fee of £3.2m, which subsequently led to a rebuild, with Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Nigel Spackman and John Aldridge all signed.

Liverpool got the season off to a flying start, winning nine of their first 10 games and remained unbeaten in the league until March 1988.

It was Everton who handed Liverpool their first defeat, but the Reds ultimately had the last laugh, as they proceeded to lift their 17th English title in a season when they scored 87 goals.

Liverpool had also equalled Leeds United’s record of 29 games unbeaten in a single league campaign.

Don Revie spearheaded the beginning of an English record during the 1968/69 season, as Leeds would go on to lift the First Division trophy.

His side got off to a great start, winning seven of their opening nine games, before losing to Manchester City 3-1 away from home.

After experiencing a humiliating 5-1 defeat at Burnley – which would turn out to be their last of the season – Leeds then went 28 games unbeaten in the top flight of English football.

In the penultimate game of the season, Leeds secured the title in a 0-0 draw at Anfield against Liverpool. Revie’s men smashed numerous English records along the way, including the most points (67), most wins (27) and fewest defeats (2) in a single campaign.

Their unbeaten run would come to an end at the hands of a familiar team on this list, as they lost 3-2 to Everton the following season in August 1969.

4 Chelsea 2004-2005 40 games

The 2004-05 season was a major turning point in the Roman Abramovich era, as Chelsea welcomed Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge.

That same summer, Abramovich signed Didier Drogba, Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira, Petr Cech and Arjen Robben – so massive change was underway.

Only 41 at the time, Mourinho was brought into Chelsea to win trophies, and that’s exactly what he did in his first season.

Not only did Mourinho win the Premier League – a feat that hadn’t been achieved in 50 years at the club – in his first season, but he also smashed numerous records along the way, especially in the defensive department.

The Blues’ first defeat of the season came away at Manchester City in October 2004, and that would be the final time they would drop three points in a game for the rest of the campaign.

Mourinho’s defensive stability was key to the 29-game unbeaten run that Chelsea embarked on for the rest of the season, breaking the record for the most points in a Premier League season with 95.

Chelsea also broke the record for the fewest goals conceded in a season (15), while goalkeeper Cech clocked the most clean sheets the Premier League had ever seen in a season (24).

Mourinho’s side would carry their unbeaten run into the following season, right up until November 2005 when they lost to Manchester United, ending on an admirable 40 without defeat.

3 Nottingham Forest 1977-1978 42 games

Nottingham Forest conquered English and European football in the 1970s under iconic manager Brian Clough.

The club’s second-tier status didn’t last long when Clough took over as manager in 1975, as they were promoted two years later. Under Clough’s leadership, alongside assistant manager Peter Taylor, Forest quickly established themselves as a formidable force in the English top flight.

Following a third-place finish in the Second Division the previous season, Clough led Forest to the pinnacle of English football, as they went on to win the league, edging Liverpool by seven points to the title.

Their unbeaten streak began in November 1977 after an away loss to Leeds United, and they proceeded to go 26 games unbeaten to lift the trophy.

Forest didn’t experience their first loss until the following season in December 1978, when they lost out to the eventual champions Liverpool, despite setting a new English record for unbeaten matches.

If all of that wasn’t enough, Forest also went on to win the European Cup back-to-back in 1979 and 1980, cementing their legacy in the football history books forever.

Jurgen Klopp was a god-like figure for Liverpool fans during his trophy-laden tenure at the club, as he brought so many iconic moments on and off the pitch.

During the 2019/20 season, the Reds were fierce at Anfield and it was seen as arguably the toughest fixture of the season for any Premier League side.

The season before, Liverpool had gone unbeaten 20 games and 17 games respectively – either side of a Manchester City defeat in January 2019 – but their 97 points total wasn’t enough to edge City’s 98.

And after bringing a sixth Champions League trophy back to the Anfield trophy cabinet in June 2019, Reds fans and players were desperate for domestic league success.

Liverpool’s momentous Premier League run without defeat lasted for 422 days, until the Reds travelled to Watford in February 2020 to be dealt their first loss of the season.

Klopp’s side were one victory away from the longest winning run in the English top flight, having won their past 18 league games. However, Liverpool would go on to claim their first Premier League title after 30 years in June 2020.

The closest title races in Premier League history

Manchester City and Arsenal have delivered a Premier League title race for the ages – here are some of the tightest from years gone by…

ByStephan Georgiou May 20, 2024 1 Arsenal 2003-2004 49 games

Arsenal’s invincible season is arguably the greatest achievement in English football history, as they topped Nottingham Forest’s record that lasted over 25 years.

Arsene Wenger’s side lifted the club’s third Premier league title by winning 26 of their 38 League games and drawing the other 12, meaning they had went the entire campaign without a single loss – the first time this had been done since the late 1800s.

The Gunners scored 73 goals, largely thanks to Thierry Henry, who bagged 30 goals to win the Golden Boot and conceded just 26 – with the likes of Sol Campbell, Kolo Toure and Jens Lehmann in top form over the season.

Henry also won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the Football Writers' Footballer of the Year, while Wenger was named Manager of the Season.

Sunderland could sign their next Defoe in move for “incredible” striker

Sunderland supporters will hope Regis Le Bris' appointment in the Black Cats hot-seat means attacking football could be on the menu next season, having been tortured by goal-shy displays for large portions of last campaign.

The Wearside outfit would only muster up 52 goals in total from 46 league clashes, with Sunderland's top scorer in the league playing in the striker positions in the form of Nazariy Rusyn only managing a meagre two goals all season long.

The brand-new Frenchman in the managerial dug-out could look towards bringing in a fresh centre-forward as a priority this summer, therefore, as a free agent continues to pique the Championship club's interest.

Sunderland must go back in for prolific free agent

Divin Mubama is now officially a free agent, walking out of his boyhood club West Ham United at the close of June, with a new adventure now on the horizon for the prolific attacker.

Sunderland could well be his next onward destination, therefore, with the second-tier side previously interested in the 19-year-old gem, but BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella is now speculating that a move to Europe could be on the cards for the former Hammers youngster instead.

West Ham striker Divin Mubama.

Le Bris' men will want to advance to the front of the queue to sign Mubama regardless of this new development, however, knowing that they need more firepower up top next season, ahead of what they hope is a far brighter campaign on the whole at the Stadium of Light.

What Mubama could offer Sunderland

Mubama signing on the dotted line for the Black Cats could be reminiscent of Jermain Defoe's move to Wearside if everything clicks into place for the young star in his potential new surroundings, with Defoe also leaving West Ham behind early into his fledging career, before becoming an iconic figure to Sunderland fans.

If Le Bris and Co are successful in convincing Mubama to play in the Championship next season, the hope will be he can finally be the deadly striker Sunderland need up top – as Defoe was – with the 19-year-old a cool and composed finisher playing in the youth ranks for the Hammers.

From 109 games in total across his early career, which included 18 senior appearances in an attempt to cut his teeth in the first-team mix, Mubama has bagged a mightily impressive 57 strikes along the way, with the demands of the second-tier now potentially his first challenge away from the London Stadium.

Defoe also walked away from the luxuries of West Ham when still in the infancy of his playing days, despite also being known as an ice-cold finisher of chances with 40 goals from 104 games, to test himself and succeeded with flying colours wherever he ended up at.

The journeyman centre-forward would bag 37 goals on the books at Sunderland even when his career was beginning to fizzle out, notching up an incredible 162 top-flight strikes in total from 496 matches across an esteemed career, with his decision to walk away from the club he started out as a wide-eyed teenager paying off.

Divin Mubama

Mubama will hope he goes on to be remembered in a similar vein, with his exploits scoring strike after strike on youth pitches even seeing him be described as "incredible" by West Ham Academy manager Kenny Brown last year.

There will be some disappointment from the Premier League club's end that they couldn't tie down their homegrown product to a new extended deal, but Sunderland will hope they can swoop in and make Mubama a prolific striker in the senior game, ahead of a thrilling Championship season to come.

All-round Mumbai Indians ease their way past Delhi Capitals to the top of the table

A top of the table clash between the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals stretched to the last over, but it wasn’t quite the nail-biting thriller that had been expected. Mumbai eased past the Capitals by five wickets, riding on excellent bowling and proactive half-centuries by Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav. Both de Kock and Yadav made 53 and though each fell somewhat against the run of play, the Capitals – excellent bowling side that they are themselves – did not have enough to defend.Mumbai hauled in the target in 19.4 overs to swap places with the Capitals on the points table.De Kock was already motoring by the time Yadav faced his first ball. He opened up in fourth over, against R Ashwin – who had a favourable match-up against de Kock coming into the game – with a six and a four. Yadav, coming into this game on the back of a match-winning 79* against the Rajasthan Royals, ensured there was no sagging of momentum when de Kock eventually did fall to Ashwin. Yadav himself was caught off Kagiso Rabada with five overs left, but by then he had brought the equation down to almost a run a ball. The depth in Mumbai’s batting meant that despite two further wickets, they were always in control of the chase. The Mumbai bowlers’ excellence had given their batsmen a relatively easy chase. They tied down the Capitals right through their innings. “Intent” perhaps has been discussed to the point of being a cliche, but intent is exactly what the Mumbai batsmen showed and the Capitals seemingly lacked. Shikhar Dhawan batted through the innings for the Capitals, but made only 69 off 52.The Capitals were also hurt by the absence of two key batsmen. Rishabh Pant was injured, which meant they had to bring in Alex Carey to don the gloves, and Carey’s entry meant Shimron Hetmyer had to sit out too. Ajinkya Rahane got his first game of IPL 2020 as a result.Dhawan-Iyer stand gives Capitals the platformPrithvi Shaw chipped Trent Boult to cover in the first over and Rahane’s start to IPL 2020 didn’t go too well – he was trapped lbw by Krunal Pandya for a run-a-ball 15. Shreyas Iyer joined Shikhar Dhawan at 24 for 2 in the fifth over, and the duo set about building steadily. While their initial tactics seemed to be to knock the ball around without taking risks, they did punish errors in line and length so that the run rate didn’t stagnate. That worked up to a point, but where Capitals felt the pinch was that neither of the set batsmen could accelerate in the second half. They still ended up putting on a good stand of 85 in 10.2 overs. When Iyer was out, they were 109 for 3 in 14.4 overs and it looked like a good finish could happen with the in-form Marcus Stoinis walking in. He was the one batsman in the line-up who was in excellent boundary-hitting form, and though he did hit a couple during his stay, he was run out in a mix up with Dhawan, which seriously impacted the Capitals’ ability to finish big.Krunal, Bumrah to the foreLeft-arm spinner Krunal Pandya was brought on as early as the fifth over, despite there being a left-hander in Dhawan at the crease and only two fielders allowed outside the circle. The confidence invested in Pandya was not misplaced, with Rahane out to his second ball. Pandya stuck to stump to stump lines, accurately targeting a back of length spot across his four overs. His spin-bowling partner Rahul Chahar shared the middle overs with Pandya and also gave nothing away, dangling the ball out of the hitting arcs of both batsmen. The control the two spinners exerted meant Iyer and Dhawan didn’t have any big overs in the middle, and they also had to contend with Jasprit Bumrah. While he didn’t pick up a wicket, Bumrah was on point with his bowling in the manner Mumbai have come to expect almost as a matter of course. He bowled the hard lengths to Dhawan, slipping in slower balls liberally to deny the batsman the pace to get the ball away. When Carey came in after Stoinis was out, Bumrah bowled every ball to him from around the wicket, an angle that the wicketkeeper-batsman hasn’t had success against much when facing pacers.Between them, the three bowled 12 overs for 79 runs, an economy rate of 6.58. While the Capitals did manage to pick up more runs against the other bowlers, it was not enough to offset the strangulation that Bumrah, Pandya and Chahar had wrought.De Kock, Yadav tee offIf there was an attack in the tournament capable of defending 162 against a batting line-up like Mumbai’s, it was the Capitals. But unlike the Capitals batsmen, de Kock and Yadav didn’t let the opposition bowlers settle into rhythms quickly, or at all. Both men actively looked to go over the in-field, and throw the bowlers off their lengths by using the crease.De Kock lifted Ashwin straight and then swept him square to start things off, and then took down Anrich Nortje with a couple of audacious sixes in the last over of the powerplay. One of the features of their batting was how seamlessly the baton passed from de Kock to Yadav. While de Kock was at the crease, he had the majority of the strike and made the majority of the runs too. He kept finding the boundary regularly, moving around in his crease to create angles. When a nicely flighted ball from Ashwin had de Kock miscuing, Yadav had faced only 11 balls. But he ensured the middle overs weren’t going to be controlled by the spin duo of Ashwin and Axar Patel. He used his wrists to whip Ashwin into the legside regularly, and swept Patel with authority. In the 15th over, with Rabada brought back to conjure a wicket, Yadav started with 4, 2, 6 to swing the balance of the match decisively. He was out on the last ball of that over but, by then, Mumbai were in safe territory.

Newcastle chiefs travel for bargain deal at £12.8m less than market value

Since the end of the Premier League season, Newcastle United have turned straight to the transfer market and have now reportedly sent club officials to London to seal a bargain deal for Eddie Howe.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have wasted little time when it comes to reinforcements, with a deal to sign Lloyd Kelly upon the expiry of his Bournemouth contract reportedly on the cards. The centre-back, who can also play left-back, enjoyed an excellent season under Andoni Iraola, but informed the Cherries of his decision to depart in the coming weeks nonetheless.

Taking full advantage, Newcastle's defensive depth problem should be somewhat eased by Kelly's arrival, given his versatility to cover for the likes of Dan Burn and the injured Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman. He's not the only one reportedly on his way in a bargain deal, however.

ByTom Cunningham May 23, 2024

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Newcastle officials have travelled to London to seal a free deal for Tosin Adarabioyo with his current Fulham contract coming to an end.

Having rejected several attempts from those at Craven Cottage to extend his deal, the defender is on course to leave as a free agent despite holding a market value of £12.8m. The Magpies will apparently triple his current £40,000-a-week salary, which would put him on par with Kieran Trippier as the Tyneside club's third-highest earner.

Suddenly, Howe will have two young, solid centre-backs to choose from and any previous concerns or circumstances in which Burn was forced into the role should be ended.

As the Magpies seek a return to the Premier League's top four, they've certainly made a good start when it comes to summer recruitment so far.

"Special" Adarabioyo will hand Howe a positive selection headache

It's set to be quite the change in mood for Howe, who was left desperately seeking defensive cover throughout the current campaign, only for injuries to pile up and options to fall short. Now, with Kelly and Adarabioyo on their way, he'll have a positive selection headache. Adarabioyo, like Kelly, won't be arriving to just sit on the bench, which hands Fabian Schar and Botman, when he returns, plenty of healthy competition.

Fulham boss Marco Silva will be disappointed to see Adarabioyo heading for the exit door, having praised his centre-back earlier this season. He told beIN Sports: “He is a key player for us. He is one of the leaders in our dressing room and we need these guys to step in in the right moments and he did it.

“We missed him a lot, we missed him because he didn’t play the first three months of the season. Tosin is a special player for us, I can’t hide that situation. The way he can defend the box but also on the ball he is a special player for me, the way I want to play, the way he can build (from the back)."

Argentina's most-capped football players of all time

Who has played the most for La Albiceleste?

ByCharlie Smith Apr 21, 2024 10 Javier Mascherano Career: 2003-2020

He definitely won’t be the flashiest name on this list, but Javier Mascherano is certainly one of the most underrated players in Argentina’s recent history, with his impact allowing the attacking players ahead of him to flourish.

The midfielder, who was a product of the River Plate academy, earned the nickname of ‘El Jefecito’, which means little chief, following his excellent defensive midfield displays.

He enjoyed a successful career in the Premier League, featuring for the likes of West Ham United and Liverpool, amassing 99 appearances in England’s top flight before departing for Barcelona in 2010 – transitioning to a centre-half role, showcasing his versatility.

However, it was for his country that his qualities shone through the most, with Mascherano claiming 147 caps, even featuring in the World Cup final back in 2014, where Argentina fell to a 1-0 defeat to Germany.

9 Angel Di Maria Career: 2005-present

A player who has undoubtedly had his career overshadowed by a certain other Argentinian player in his position is winger Angel Di Maria.

The now 36-year-old has enjoyed a 19-year-long professional career, going on to achieve unthinkable things following on from his debut at hometown club Rosario Central way back in 2005.

Following 39 appearances for the Argentinian outfit, he received his big break into European football, joining Portuguese giants Benfica in 2007 before catapulting himself into the limelight for Real Madrid over a five-year stint from 2009-2014.

He scored in the 2014 Champions League final against Madrid rivals Atletico, winning one of his 27 club trophies during his sensational career all over Europe.

Internationally, he’s been just as successful, accumulating 138 appearances for his nation, scoring 30 times – including in the World Cup triumph in 2022 – cementing himself in Argentinian folklore forever.

8 Javier Zanetti Career: 1992-2014

Continuing the trend of underrated players takes us to full-back Javier Zanetti, with the longevity of his career certainly boosting him in this list.

The right-back was nearly a one-club man for the entirety of his playing career, featuring 858 times for Italian giants Inter Milan following a move from his hometown club Tallares in 1995.

Zanetti was Inter’s club captain from 2001 all the way up until his retirement in 2014 at the age of 40 – a bonkers age to be still playing football at an elite level. Zanetti will always be known for captaining the club and playing a hugely significant role in Inter’s historic treble-winning season in 2009/10 under José Mourinho.

The Argentinian’s leadership and versatility played a huge part in his successful career, often featuring in midfield as well as left-back alongside his natural right-sided role.

His international career was just as successful, reaching 144 caps for Argentina between 1994 and 2011, the third most in the country’s history before his international retirement.

Whilst he failed to win any international trophies with Argentina, he certainly played a pivotal role for the nation during an era that was dominated by attacking players, with his recognition fully deserved especially considering the impact of others within the national side.

7 Omar Sivori Career Span: 1954-1969

Not many modern-day football fans will have heard about his qualities, but Omar Sivori paved the way for the likes of Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona to excel with their dribbling skills, with Sivori the first Argentinian player to demonstrate pace and trickery in the attacking third.

Like Mascherano, he was a product of the River Plate academy, and took little time in introducing himself to the world, bursting onto the global stage at the 1957 South American Championships as part of a deadly attacking trio nicknamed the Trio of Death which also featured forwards Humberto Maschio and Valentin Angellilo.

As a result of his performances at the tournament, Sivori moved to Italy, joining Juventus for £90,000, which was at the time a world-record fee.

He would end his career with 180 goals in 326 appearances, an average of one goal every two matches, making himself one of the country’s most underappreciated talents.

6 Juan Roman Riquelme Career: 1996-2015

Juan Roman Riquelme, the modern-day Maradona.

A player that never fully showcased his talents in Europe, spending the vast majority of his 19-year playing career in Argentina, featuring for the likes of Boca Juniors and Argentinos Juniors.

However, he did enjoy a five-year spell in Spain for Barcelona and Villarreal, with his best form in La Liga coming with the latter.

Riquelme managed to score 36 times in 106 appearances for the Yellow Submarines, as he helped the club achieve a third-place finish in La Liga and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in their history.

He enjoyed a successful international career for Argentina, featuring 51 times scoring 17 and assisting 20 before his subsequent retirement from international football back in 2008.

Whilst he never achieved what he would’ve liked during his time with his nation, he certainly made a huge impact, trying to fill the attacking void left by Maradona.

5 Daniel Passarella Career: 1971-1989

Daniel Passarella will always be regarded as one of the best centre-backs in football history, purely for his impact at both ends of the pitch.

He led Argentina to their first-ever World Cup as captain in 1978, before being part of the squad that won the tournament again in 1986 – making him the only player in the nation’s history to have won the trophy twice.

He spent the majority of his career at River Plate, before six years in Italy playing for Fiorentina and Inter Milan, subsequently retiring at his beloved River of Silver back in 1989.

Passarella, who was only 5 foot 8, a relatively short height for a central defender, scored a remarkable 143 goals throughout his career, an unheard-of amount of a defender, including 20 for his country during his 10-year spell playing for his nation.

4 Gabriel Batistuta Career: 1988-2004

Following an incredible record of 56 goals in 78 appearances, striker Gabriel Batistuta was Argentina’s top scorer until he was overtaken by the inevitable Messi in 2016.

He enjoyed a decorated international career with his nation, winning the Copa América twice, finishing as top scorer in the 1991 tournament and finding himself on the scoresheet during the 2-1 final victory over Mexico in 1993.

Batistuta represented his country in three World Cups, also enjoying a phenomenal club career, scoring 245 times in 448 appearances, including 183 in Serie A for the likes of Roma, Fiorentina and Inter Milan.

Whilst his goalscoring record was impressive, it wasn’t enough to push him into our top three, with the other players picking themselves following their respective time as a professional.

3 Mario Kempes Career: 1970 – 1996

Dubbed as the man who put Argentina on the map by Maradona, Mario Kempes was the star of Argentina’s 1978 World Cup triumph, becoming only one of three players in history to have won the World Cup, the Golden Boot for the top scorer, and the Golden Ball, for the best player, in the same year.

He single-handedly won the tournament for his country, netting six times in the tournament – including two in the final against the Netherlands and finishing as the tournament’s top scorer.

Over the course of his international career, he played 43 times for Argentina and scored 20 goals – cementing himself in the country’s history following his iconic performances back in 1978.

2 Diego Maradona Career: 1976-1997

Narrowly missing out on the top spot is the iconic Maradona, who captured the hearts of supporters all over the world following his time for his country and club career – most notably with Napoli.

The attacking midfielder burst onto the scene, scoring 116 league goals in 166 league matches for his boyhood side, Argentinos Juniors, throughout the first six years of his career as a professional.

Undoubtedly, his best stint in his club career came for Italian side Napoli featuring 187 times, contributing with 129 goals and assists – becoming a hero at Stadio San Paolo.

Maradona’s most iconic moments came for his beloved Argentina, most notably in the 1986 World Cup, where he played a huge part in leading his nation to their second World Cup triumph.

On route to lifting the trophy, in the semi-final versus England, Maradona produced two of the most iconic moments in football history. His first goal was iconic, with his effort, now dubbed as the ‘Hand of God’ going unnoticed – causing huge controversy.

His second effort in the same match was a huge contrast, completing a 60-yard mazy run before slotting home and for sure going down as one of the best World Cup goals in history.

Maradona’s legacy was reflected after his passing in 2020, with former side Napoli renaming their stadium after him – a huge recognition for his time there as a player.

1 Lionel Messi Career: 2004-present

alexandre-lacazette-lionel-messi-newcastle-opinion

The greatest there is, the greatest there was and the greatest there ever will be – Lionel Andres Messi.

Many Argentinian fans would’ve believed that anyone could’ve surpassed the achievements of icon Maradona, but Messi has completely taken things to another level.

He joined Barcelona at the age of 13 back in 2000, rapidly progressing through the club’s youth system and winning everything possible during his time at the Nou Camp.

As part of the team, he won 10 La Liga titles, seven Copa de Espana trophies, seven Copa del Rey trophies, and four Champions League trophies – winning everything there is to be won in Europe.

Messi is the club’s all-time top appearance maker, the club and league’s all-time top scorer and top assister. The 36-year-old has won 45 professional trophies, more than anyone in history, and has a record eight Ballon d’Or trophies.

Up until 2021, he had failed to win any international trophies, but in the last few years he’s finally ticked off both trophies available, winning the Copa America in 2021 followed by the World Cup in 2022.

There was always a question mark whether he could be the GOAT if he failed to win any international trophies, but following the nation’s recent successes, he is undoubtedly the best to ever grace the game.

Adam Zampa: Australia's T20I focus rewarded by top ranking

If the T20 World Cup does take place this year, Australia would be one of the favourites

Andrew McGlashan13-May-2020Adam Zampa believes that Australia holding the No.1-ranking in T20Is for the first time is the reward for giving the format the attention it needs.Although Australia’s climb to the top was in part due to the ICC’s annual update of their rankings – which also saw them top the Test ladder – it has come on the back of a very strong run in T20Is with seven wins out of nine matches during the 2019-2020 season, securing series victories against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa. The sequence goes back further, too, including the 2-0 victory over India last March which was sealed by Glenn Maxwell’s magnificent 113 off 55 balls in Bengaluru.ALSO READ: Adam Zampa wants to be more than a white-ball specialistDuring the recent season, the margins of victory weren’t close: ranging from seven to 10 wickets and 97 to 134 runs. They would have won all six matches at home if not for rain in Sydney against Pakistan and the only defeat was a 12-run loss in Port Elizabeth when a hesitant middle-order display undid them. With two T20 World Cups to plan for in 2020 and 2021 – although the October tournament in Australia is under threat due to the Covid-19 pandemic – the selectors moved away from seeing it as the format where key players, especially bowlers, would be rested and have also been boosted by the returns of David Warner and Steven Smith.”The emphasis we put on T20 cricket as an international team over the last couple of years has made a huge difference,” Zampa, who took 10 wickets in eight T20Is last season, said. “There was the Test format and ODI format leading up to the World Cup last year that we were focusing on but this T20 World Cup in particular has made a difference in the way we select teams, the way the scheduling looks.”I think it’s been an amazing 18 months in particular for the T20I team and we’ve got a really good balance leading up to the World Cup. It’s exciting to be a part of that.”Australia celebrate Adam Zampa’s breakthrough•AP Photo/Themba Hadebe

The T20 World Cup is the one piece of global silverware to elude Australia with their best returns being the 2010 final defeat against England in Barbados. There remains hope that the tournament later this year can still take place, although the challenge of getting 16 teams together for a global event amid the pandemic is one that may prove too great. There have been suggestions of moving it back to February next year but the knock-on effects of that are also considerable. If the tournament does proceed in October it could be a challenge for players to prepare depending on how much professional cricket is possible beforehand and there is no chance of international cricket until July at the earliest. Australia’s ODI and T20I tour of the UK that month is all-but sure not to take place as scheduled, with discussions around whether it will be shunted to September.Zampa, who has a Cricket Australia (CA) central contract and will come off annual leave on May 18, thinks some players would be able to adjust to a lack of competitive cricket but admitted he is someone who needs games under his belt. Plans are currently being drawn up, led by CA’s head of science and medicine Alex Kountouris, as to what training will look like over the next few months as states lift their Covid-19 restrictions.”Some guys could probably go straight into it like nothing has happened but personally I like to continue playing cricket,” Zampa said. “The last six weeks has been weird for me. Especially in T20 with different game situations, putting yourself under pressure. I need some game time to be ready for international cricket but we haven’t really had any messages about the World Cup so haven’t thought about preparation.””It will be a bit different to the last few years – playing IPL or county cricket – but I think once the leave period is done in a few days’ time, the message has been to train in your states for the foreseeable future and do pre-season as everyone else would.”
