Win or lose, Gareth Southgate must be remembered as the manager who gave England hope again

Don't listen to the haters – the 53-year-old is the best coach the Three Lions have had for 50 years and has unified a fractious nation

Softly spoken, educated, polite and measured are all words you could use to describe Gareth Southgate. Qualities anyone would want to be associated with. But somehow, the England manager tends to provoke derision whenever his name is brought up.

Take the vociferous reaction when it was reported he was being considered as the next Manchester United manager. Or the response of certain pundits and journalists when England exited the last World Cup to France.

In some quarters, the mention of Southgate stirs equal amounts of anger as Donald Trump. The reaction is quite different among people who have worked alongside him or played for him, however.

To those who know Southgate personally, he is a unifier. In a country as fractured as England, he is exactly the leader its football team needs. So whatever happens at Euro 2024, he should be remembered as the manager who gave the country hope again.

  • Getty

    Decade of failure

The easiest response to the Southgate haters is to remind them of the team's fortunes in the decade before he took over, in highly unusual circumstances, in the autumn of 2016.

In 2006, the so-called 'Golden Generation', coached by Sven-Goran Eriksson, had fallen to Portugal on penalties in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. It was seen as a huge failure, and yet soon would be seen as quite the achievement, as little more than a year later, under Steve McLaren, England failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

In the 2010 World Cup, then coached by Champions League winner Fabio Capello, they finished second in a group newspaper had dubbed as "EASY" and were thrashed 4-1 by Germany in the last 16. At Euro 2012, under Roy Hodgson, they limped out on penalties to Italy in the quarter-finals, and at the next World Cup finished bottom of their group.

Fast-forward to Euro 2016, and still managed by Hodgson despite his previous failures, they were stunned by tiny Iceland and knocked out at the last 16.

    Out-performing fashionable managers

By the time Southgate took charge after Sam Allardyce was forced to resign over a case of entrapment by undercover journalists, England had not won a knockout match at a tournament for 10 years. Southgate has since won six out of nine. He is the first manager since World Cup-winner Sir Alf Ramsey in 1968 to take the team to consecutive tournament semi-finals, and the first since Ramsay to lead them to a final.

The fact Southgate has been unable to ultimately lead England to glory and end 58 years of hurt is a dark mark against him according to some ultra-demanding fans. But compared to his predecessors, including some of the highest regarded coaches in the game at the time such as Eriksson and Capello, his record makes for very impressive reading.

"His legacy with England is set by getting to the final and the World Cup semi-finals," said Gary Neville. "Yeah, getting over the line will be thrown back at him by many, but not by me, who went to eight tournaments and got to one semi-final.

"He does get unfair criticism, of course he does. He's the best performing England manager we've had apart from Alf Ramsey. Stop it there. For all the fashionable managers we've had, Gareth Southgate has outperformed them all by a mile."

Unifier in an era of division

Southgate has not just improved results, though. He has done something many of his predecessors could not do: he has changed the image of the national team. Everyone in England, whatever their background, gets behind his team, which was not always the case.

That is no mean feat, especially considering that Southgate's tenure has coincided with an extremely politically-fractured era. While he has been in charge, the nation has been through the divisive process of Brexit and cycled through five Prime Ministers, with a sixth potentially on the way before the Euros are over.

The country has also been through the trauma of the coronavirus pandemic, which it handled terribly. In an era of generally woeful political leadership, Southgate has been a beacon of hope.

His vision was set out in the letter he wrote to the country ahead of the last European Championship and which became the basis for the National Theatre play . On the eve of the next European Championship, it is worth reading again.

"Dear England, It has been an extremely difficult year," begins the letter. "Everyone in this country has been directly affected by isolation and loss. But we have also seen countless examples of heroism and sacrifice.

"It’s given us all a new understanding of the fragility of life and what really matters. When you think of the grand scheme of things, perhaps football doesn’t seem so important. And what I want to speak about today is much bigger than football."

    Rallying behind his players

Southgate's letter to the country outlined a unifying vision of Englishness. "Regardless of your upbringing and politics, what is clear is that we are an incredible nation – relative to our size and population – that has contributed so much to the arts, science and sport," he wrote. "We do have a special identity and that remains a powerful motivator."

It also addressed the social media abuse his players received at the time, often of a racist nature. His words would unfortunately ring true at the end of the tournament, when Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford all received sickening comments after not scoring their penalties in the final. His words should make anyone who finds such abuse repulsive very proud.

He wrote: "Why would you tag someone in on a conversation that is abusive? Why would you choose to insult somebody for something as ridiculous as the colour of their skin? Why? Unfortunately for those people that engage in that kind of behaviour, I have some bad news. You’re on the losing side."

Southgate's backing of his players when they took the knee during the last Euros in opposition to racial inequality alienated a section of England fans forever. It also put him at odds with some members of the government, often the same people who claim to support the team while railing against immigration and multi-culturalism.

These people would rather England was a different country to the one that it is and would love to move the clocks back by several decades. But Southgate's England is a true reflection of the country in 2024 – and they are a far better football team for it.

Ginn, Oliver to take on Pat Howard's former Cricket Australia role

Triple Olympic gold medal-winning rower Drew Ginn has taken on one of the newly created positions at Cricket Australia

Daniel Brettig16-Jun-2019Triple Olympic gold medal-winning rower Drew Ginn and longtime Justin Langer collaborator Ben Oliver have been formally commissioned as the new high performance executives for Cricket Australia, taking joint control of an area that sprawled into such vast territory under the former czar Pat Howard that the governing body deemed it too large for one person to run.Howard was sacked by the new chief executive Kevin Roberts shortly after he replaced James Sutherland, in the wake of the damning Ethics Centre review of Australian cricket culture that was ordered after the Newlands ball tampering scandal last year. A lengthy search for Howard’s replacement has seen the role filled temporarily by the executive in charge of community cricket, Belinda Clark, as CA stopped and then redefined the recruiting process as being for two jobs rather than one. Ginn will be based in Melbourne and Oliver in Brisbane with the pair starting on July 29.While Howard joined cricket “cold” in 2011, following a career in rugby union, pharmacy and property development, Ginn has moved across from his background in rowing and the Olympic movement via two years as the head of high performance with Tasmania. He will take control of a role primarily responsible for the running of domestic competitions, Australian youth teams, player, coach and umpire pathways including club cricket, talent ID and sports science.”I am looking forward to joining Cricket Australia and having the opportunity to work more broadly across the National system,” Ginn said. “The past two years with Cricket Tasmania have been immensely rewarding.”This is a chance to continue the work I have enjoyed locally and to now work closely with many great people involved in leading our domestic, national and youth competitions along with the leaders of our State programs, and those leaders in our Cricket Australia pathway programs, and our sports science and sports medicine areas.”Peter Roach, the head of cricket operations, will report to Ginn. Roach has also taken over control of scheduling, an area of some difficulty for CA in recent times after India insisted on an ODI tour in mid-January next year. The Big Bash League, Sheffield Shield and domestic one-day tournament programs for next summer are still to be announced.Oliver, a former first-class player for Victoria and Tasmania, held roles with CA, Cricket Victoria and the ICC before working closely with Langer as the high performance manager for Western Australia since 2012. Together, they established a program that was the envy of other states, notably by their use of a squad closely unified between the WA state team and the Perth Scorchers BBL club – a model subsequently used unashamedly by Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes.”I have devoted most of my adult life to cricket, in both playing and high-performance roles, and I am extremely proud and humbled to continue that association as EGM, National Teams,” Oliver said. “I look forward to working with Justin Langer and Matthew Mott and their national men’s and women’s teams, as well as national selectors and all those involved in team operations and logistics.”Cricket Australia head office•Getty ImagesAmong the first items on Oliver’s to-do list will be a look at the national selection panel, which will be shorn of the national talent manager Greg Chappell, currently with the Australian team on World Cup assignment, when he retires at the end of the Ashes series. Having already lost Mark Waugh, who was not replaced last year, that would leave only Langer and the chairman of selectors, Trevor Hohns, as formal members of the panel.Howard’s tenure featured no end of issues, as he sought to work as a change agent to pursue goals outlined in the 2011 Don Argus-led review of Australian team performance, which followed the hefty loss of the Ashes 3-1 at home to England in 2010-11. His hard-nosed and confrontational style did not always go down well across the Australian system, particularly when added to his lack of a cricket background.Alongside numerous issues of workload management for fast bowlers in particular, Howard’s term saw the 2013 homework scandal in India that contributed to the sacking of Mickey Arthur to be replaced by Darren Lehmann in 2013, the death of Phillip Hughes in 2014 and subsequent work to change concussion protocols in the game, winning the World Cup in 2015 on home soil and then suffering a dramatic Ashes defeat in England later that same year.Another run of losses in late 2016, including Test series defeats by Sri Lanka away and South Africa at home, led to Rod Marsh’s resignation as selection chairman and a refocus on the demands for strong performance by the Australian team – Howard and Sutherland visited the team dressing room in Hobart to push that message directly. Results did improve, including a narrow series defeat against a highly fancied India in India in 2017, and the regaining of the Ashes at home in 2017-18, before the Newlands scandal in South Africa led to many changes, including the end of Howard’s time in the job.Clark was left to run the department while a replacement could be found, and it was her opinion that the executive general manager’s role had to be split in two. “Australian cricket owes Belinda a debt of gratitude for the exceptional job she has performed throughout a challenging time for Australian cricket,” Roberts said. “She is one of our game’s greatest trailblazers and servants at all levels and we are delighted that she will resume her role as EGM of Community Cricket in late August after handing over to Ben and Drew and having a well-earned break. It is a critical role and a job she loves.”

Fabrizio Romano: Man City keen on "brilliant" Girona breakout star Savio

Manchester City are always in the market for up-and-coming talent, and they have started internal discussions regarding a player who is already thriving within the City Football Group.

Manchester City look to arrest Premier League slump…

For most sides, losing just once in their last six Premier League wouldn't be deemed as a slump, especially given when the sole defeat came at the hands of Aston Villa, who have put together an almost formidable run of results at Villa Park this term.

Nevertheless, Manchester City aren't like most sides, which is evidenced by the fact Pep Guardiola and his men are attempting to pull off a record-breaking fourth successive title in a row. Four draws, one triumph over Luton Town and a loss in the West Midlands have left the Sky Blues with work to do if they are to retain the league; however, they will hope to take confidence from their Club World Cup success last week.

Man City make "big-money" offer to "very unique" target; he's wowed scouts

City are in pole position to secure his services.

Goodison Park awaits Guardiola's side in one of the toughest assignments they could encounter following their trip to Saudi Arabia. Speaking to official club media pre-match, Portugal international Bernardo Silva said his side must improve as they seek the Premier League crown: "First, we have to focus on the games left this month as it is going to be a very tough month with Everton, then Sheffield United and then Huddersfield in the FA Cup.

"Now we are really focused on the domestic competitions – especially the Premier League as we are not in a very good position. We can think about Copenhagen in the Champions League later on as we have some tough, tough games coming up."

Now, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has offered up the latest state of play regarding Manchester City's pursuit of a talented attacker who could arrive in the summer.

Manchester City discuss Savio deal

Taking to social media platform X, Romano has confirmed that on-loan Girona attacker Savio is a player City chiefs are "discussing internally" as they plan for the long-term under Guardiola.

On loan from ESTAC Troyes, the Brazilian wonderkid is operating under the umbrella of two clubs that are already in the City Football Group, creating a potentially complicated scenario that could eventually lead to the 19-year-old moving to Manchester.

Labelled a "brilliant talent" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Savio, also known as Savinho, has registered five goals and five assists in 20 appearances across all competitions this campaign at the time of writing (Savio statistics – Transfermarkt).

Smith, Warner, Starc not in squad for ODIs against Pakistan

There was speculation that Australia’s ODI series against Pakistan – starting March 22 in Sharjah – would be the setting for Steven Smith and David Warner’s returns from their bans for ball tampering. But neither of them will be playing any part in the five matches scheduled in the UAE.”While their bans will be finished on March 28,” chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said, “Steve and David have been working through rehabilitation from elbow surgery and it has been agreed the best pathway for them to return to play is in the Indian Premier League [starting March 23], a strong competition which features some of the world’s best players.”David will play with Sunrisers Hyderabad and Steve with Rajasthan Royals. Cricket Australia will continue to liaise with both Steve, David and their IPL clubs to monitor progress as we build towards the ICC World Cup and the Ashes.”Australia’s 15-man squad for the series was released on Friday with another big name missing due to injury. “Mitchell Starc’s recovery from his left pectoral muscle strain has been set back by a slight recurrence as he commenced bowling,” Hohns said. “This has ruled him out of the Pakistan series and while frustrating for all involved, our focus is to have Mitch ready for the World Cup.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Starc has been out of action since the second Test against Sri Lanka in February, when he picked up two five-wicket hauls. He was expected to be fit in time for these ODIs against Pakistan – which are the last that Australia play before they have to name their squad for the World Cup in May – but that timeline hasn’t worked out. So, in the end, the selectors have trusted the same group that is currently in India to keep going for another tour.Out-of-form Aaron Finch has been retained as captain, offspinner Nathan Lyon has another chance to press his case in limited-overs cricket, and the likes of Peter Handscomb, Ashton Turner and Alex Carey can keep pushing their case to be included in the middle order of Australia’s first-choice XI.”The squad has started this tour well against a very good Indian side,” Hohns said. “They won the T20I series and have pushed the hosts in the opening two matches of the ODI series in challenging sub-continent conditions.”The squad is making pleasing progress ahead of the World Cup, and with three matches remaining in India and the five-match series against Pakistan to come, we believe they will benefit further from the continuity of playing together.”Kane Richardson, the fast bowler who picked up a side strain last week, also kept his place, with Hohns hopeful that he would recover in time for the first game against Pakistan.Smith and Warner, meanwhile, have resumed batting since sustaining elbow injuries in the Bangladesh Premier League earlier this year. The former Australia captain instagrammed a video of his return to the nets on March 1 while his erstwhile deputy is set to play grade cricket again this weekend in Sydney. Both men have been in touch with Australia’s team management, including coach Justin Langer, and all three of them were part of discussions that culminated in delaying their comeback to international cricket.

Liverpool reach deal for SlotCompensation package agreed with FeyenoordDutch boss to join in summerWHAT HAPPENED?

According to The Athletic, Liverpool and Feyenoord have agreed a deal for the 45-year-old to succeed Klopp at Anfield this summer.

The Reds made an initial approach for Slot on Wednesday, which was swiftly knocked back by the Dutch club due to the compensation package that was offered. This issue has since been resolved and the former midfielder is now free to move to the Premier League.

Liverpool's interest in Slot was only revealed earlier in the week – after Feyenoord had secured the Dutch cup against Nijmegen last weekend.

Brighton and Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi and Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim had previously been considered frontrunners for the role – but it is Slot who Liverpool CEO Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes ultimately opted for.

WHAT KLOPP SAID

Speaking on the possibility of Slot taking over from him this summer, Klopp said: "What I like a lot about it is if he is the one then he wants to take the job – he’s desperate, excited, let’s go for it.

“I like the way his team play football and all the things I hear about him as a guy. Some people I know, know him, I don’t know him yet. Good coach, good guy.

“If he’s the solution for the club then I am more than happy. It’s not up to me to judge but it all sounds really good to me.”

The Reds have slipped to third place in the Premier League title race, three points off Arsenal at the top of the table. Despite the campaign fizzling out, Klopp will see out his remaining games in charge of the club and will be honoured in a fitting manner come the end of the season.

The club will then enter a new era under Slot this summer.
